Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was released from the hospital Monday afternoon after being admitted last week following an incident where he fell.

“Leader McConnell’s concussion recovery is proceeding well and the Leader was discharged from the hospital today,” a statement from McConnell’s office said. “At the advice of his physician, the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home.”

“Over the course of treatment this weekend, the Leader’s medical team discovered that he also suffered a minor rib fracture on Wednesday, for which he is also being treated,” the statement continued. “The Leader and Secretary Chao are deeply thankful for the skilled medical care, prayers, and kindness they have received.”

The 81-year-old lawmaker tripped during a reception and dinner last week for the Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee designed to elect Republicans to the upper chamber, at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, D.C.

McConnell is a polio survivor and sometimes suffers injuries related to his balance issues, including a fractured shoulder four years ago when he fell at his home in Kentucky.

McConnell’s hospitalization comes as Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) have both been hospitalized in recent weeks.

Feinstein was hospitalized last week in San Francisco after being diagnosed with shingles, she said in a statement. She reportedly is now back at her home recovering.

Fetterman checked himself into a mental health hospital on the night of February 15 at the recommendation of the attending physician of the United States Congress after experiencing symptoms of severe depression. NBC News reported that Fetterman was expected to be hospitalized for weeks.

The New York Times reported in February that Fetterman was struggling with “serious mental health” issues and that he often cannot understand the words that others are saying to him after suffering a stroke last year that nearly killed him.

The report said that Fetterman’s struggles are significantly worse when he is under any kind of stress.

Fetterman has indicated that when he’s under stress, people’s voices become muffled, the report said.

Fetterman was hospitalized out of an abundance of caution in February after feeling lightheaded at a Democrat Senate retreat.

Fetterman’s staff claimed that doctors said that he did not have another stroke and that they had also checked for signs of seizures.

The report noted that the stroke last year has taken a “very real psychological toll” on him and that he has “had to come to terms with the fact that he may have set himself back permanently by not taking the recommended amount of rest during the campaign.”
