President Joe Biden is deep underwater on several vital issues, and his sagging approval ratings are creating headaches for Democrats as the 2022 midterms loom, according to a new poll.
A survey of 542 U.S. adults, conducted between June 3-4 by ABC News and Ipsos found that Biden’s approval rating on the national economic recovery sits at just 37%; on the issue of inflation, his approval is just 28%. What spells trouble for Biden and his party is the fact that those issues are the top two concerns for voters in the November general elections.
The survey asked respondents whether they approved of Biden’s handling of various problems. However, the only topic that Biden had a net approval rating on was his response to the COVID-19 pandemic: 56% of Americans approved while 43% disapproved.
On nearly every other issue, Americans overwhelmingly disapproved of Biden’s performance. Just 37% approved of his handling of Immigration, while 61% disapproved. The same percentage, 37%, approved of Biden’s handling of the economic recovery, as did the same number of Americans who disapproved, 61%.
A slightly higher number, 38%, approved of Biden’s handling of crime, while the same number, 61% disapproved. Another 37% approved of his handling of taxes, with 61% who disapproved.
Biden fared slightly better on climate change and the Russian invasion of Ukraine but was still at net disapproval on both. 43% approved of his climate change strategy while 55% disapproved, and 46% believed Biden’s reaction to Ukraine has been satisfactory, while 52% disapproved.
Even on issues that are high priorities for Democrats, Biden was in poor standing with the public: on abortion, just 41% approved, while 58% disapproved; on the issue of gun violence, just 35% approved, while 64% disapproved.
Biden’s lowest approval ratings were on the issues of inflation and gas prices. Just 28% of respondents approved of Biden’s handling of inflation, while an overwhelming 71% disapproved. Biden received even lower marks on gas prices: 27% approved of his handling, while 72% disapproved.

Biden’s cratering ratings on critical issues are likely to spell trouble for Congressional Democrats. Nearly every respondent, fully 96%, said that the economy was either extremely, very, or somewhat important to their vote, and a majority, 51%, said it was extremely important. Another 96% said inflation was significant to their vote, including 51% who said it was extremely important. Another 90% said gas prices were important, including 48% who said it was extremely important.
Asked the single most important issue influencing their vote in November, inflation and the economy were the top two issues, garnering 21% and 19% of respondents, respectively. Gun violence came in third place with 17%, abortion in fourth with 12%, and gas prices followed with 8%.
Furthermore, ABC News reported, citing the same poll, that Republicans still maintain a double-digit lead in voter enthusiasm as the midterms approach: 57% of Republicans said they were enthusiastic about voting in the 2022 midterms, while just 44% of Democrats are enthusiastic.
Biden’s collapsing approval ratings on the issues come after recent polls have found Biden’s approval rating overall has also sunk into the mid-30’s. A Reuters poll conducted in late May found Biden’s overall approval rating stood at just 36%. Meanwhile, the results of Big Data Poll’s monthly Public Polling Project found Biden’s approval was at 37%.
