House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said he&#8217;s lost track of the informant who was the source for the investigation into alleged corruption centered around President Joe Biden and his family.
The informant is the source for a whistleblower who informed Comer about an alleged <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whistleblower-alleges-fbi-has-evidence-of-biden-engaging-in-bribery-scheme-with-foreign-national" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bribery scheme</a>.
Appearing on &#8220;Sunday Morning Futures&#8221; on Fox News, Comer said at least nine of the ten whistleblowers with knowledge of the situation are &#8220;either currently in court, they’re currently in jail, or they’re currently missing.&#8221;
&#8220;Well unfortunately, we can&#8217;t track down the informant,&#8221; Comer told host Maria Bartiromo. &#8220;We&#8217;re hopeful that the informant is still there. The whistleblower knows the informant, the whistleblower is very credible.&#8221;
&#8220;Hold on a second, Congressman,&#8221; Bartiromo interjected. &#8220;Did you just say that the informant is now missing?&#8221;
&#8220;Well we&#8217;re hopeful that we can find the informant,&#8221; Comer repeated. &#8220;Now remember, these informants are kind of in the spy business, so they don&#8217;t make a habit of being seen a lot or being high-profile or anything like that. We have basic information with respect to what the informant has alleged, and it&#8217;s very serious.&#8221;
&#8220;Are there whistleblowers or informants missing right now?&#8221; asked Bartiromo.
“Well, with what we&#8217;ve investigated, and the people that we&#8217;ve tracked down, going back to the (CEFC China Energy), the two main players in that business, as well as all the Americans that were involved in the different Biden influence peddling schemes, as well as the Serbian national, nine of the ten people that we’ve identified that have knowledge with respect to the Biden&#8217;s, they’re one of three things, Maria. They’re either currently in court, they’re currently in jail, or they’re currently missing.&#8221;

A self-described autistic grocery store clerk was reportedly fired from his job at a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> supermarket after he was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/crime" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attacked</a> on the job three times.
Austin Sherrell, who describes himself as &#8220;mildly autistic,&#8221; worked as a clerk at the Vons supermarket in Bakersfield. He was the victim of three separate violent attacks while working at the supermarket. But when he applied for worker&#8217;s compensation, he says he was told to take time off, then his hours were cut, then he was fired.
Sherrell&#8217;s responsibilities included bagging groceries, collecting shopping carts, and taking out the trash around the store. In an interview with local NBC affiliate <a href="https://www.kget.com/news/local-news/former-vons-courtesy-clerk-says-he-was-assaulted-three-times-in-three-months-then-fired/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KGET</a>, he said he was well-liked by the customers at his store. “You know, not to toot my own horn, a lot of people say that they like me,” he said. “A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, we like that [employee].’ … Like, I hear it. I hear it all the time.”
The first incident happened in January at a dumpster behind the store. “I’m taking out the trash,” he said. “Two people are stealing. They go out the side (door).” Upon seeing him, one of the thieves immediately punched him in the face. The other person then pepper-sprayed him. “I’m bleeding,” Sherrell said. “I get away, I run back inside.&#8221; By the time police arrived, the two thieves were gone.
The second incident happened in March. Again, Sherrell was taking out the trash at the same dumpster, when a man attacked him with a knife. Fortunately, the clerk had stuffed a roll of extra trash bags into his apron, which stopped the blade so that it couldn&#8217;t harm him. Again, the police showed up too late to catch the criminal.
The clerk said he was rattled by the assault. “The first incident didn’t shake me too much but the second incident, like, when you are close to death, I’m the most shook up I’ve ever been in my entire life,&#8221; Sherrell said. &#8220;The most scared I’ve even been in my entire life.&#8221;
Finally, in April, Sherrell was working inside the store when two women walked up to him and said they were being harassed by a man in the store, possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Sherrell says he approached the man, along with a store security guard and a manager, who reportedly stood by while the assailant confronted Sherrell. “He gets in my face, he’s cussing me out, he’s threatening my life,” Sherrell recalled. “I back away, he comes back in my face. I back away again. The third time I defend myself, I push him off of me.”
Rattled by three assaults in just four months, Sherrell applied for worker&#8217;s compensation. “My biggest problem – what I have is – I’m mildly autistic,” he said. “I have a hard time processing things.” On a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/xybd9-lost-job?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&amp;utm_content=undefined&amp;utm_medium=copy_link_all&amp;utm_source=customer&amp;utm_term=undefined" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoFundMe</a> page, Sherrell&#8217;s father Adam said that Austin suffered nightmares and panic attacks after the knife attack.

But the store suspended him pending an investigation. When he returned, he says his hours were cut. Shortly after that, he was reportedly fired for touching a customer.
Sherrell told KGET that he has no desire to continue working for the grocery chain, but expressed his gratitude to the customers who treated him nicely during his time there.
As of the publishing of this article, the GoFundMe has raised more than $5600.

Police in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/north-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">North Carolina</a> got a helping hoof this week when a herd of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/animals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cattle</a> aided in the roundup of a suspect on the run.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Police</a> in the town of Boone, in the western part of the state, pulled the suspect over during a routine traffic stop. The suspect fled the scene, and police were unable to track him down. Fortunately, the cattle were not pleased to have the suspect in their pasture and led police directly to him.
Police recounted the incident in a news release on their <a href="https://www.facebook.com/boonepolice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook page</a>. On May 9, police pulled the suspect over as part of a routine traffic stop. The suspect fled and led Boone police and Watauga County Sheriff&#8217;s deputies on a street chase. The suspect was driving erratically, so police could not get close to him. The suspect pulled off the highway near an intersection in nearby Deep Gap and fled into undeveloped land.
It was then that the cows came in. &#8220;Apparently cows do not want suspected criminals loitering in their pasture and quickly assisted our officers by leading them directly to where the suspect was hiding,&#8221; the release said. &#8220;The cows communicated with the officers as best they could and finally just had the officers follow them to the suspect’s location.&#8221;
The suspect was charged with 1 count of Felony Fleeing/Eluding Arrest with a Motor Vehicle, Driving with a Revoked License, and Disorderly Conduct. A $20,000 bond was set ahead of his court date. The press release thanked the officers, and the cows, for their assistance.

Also this week, police in rural <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/oklahoma-police-run-toward-to-cries-for-help-coming-from-a-very-upset-goat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oklahoma</a> responded to what sounded like cries for help, only to find that the cries were coming from a very upset goat. Body cam footage included with a Facebook post showed two officers responding to what they believed were human cries. “I think that’s a person,” one of the officers says. “That’s a person,” the officer repeats. In the distance, a sound that appears to be someone shouting can be heard; the officers run toward the sound. “It’s a goat,” the officer in front says. The two officers run through some trees and come upon the farm, where the goat can be heard bleating discontentedly, in a way that sounds like “help.” “Aww, it is,” the officer laughs.
The officers walk up to the farmer and explain the situation. “We didn’t know if it was an animal or a person,” the officer says through laughter. “But sure enough, we were walking over here and I’m like, ‘that’s a person.’ From long distance it sounds like ‘help.’”

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gavin-newsom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gavin Newsom</a> announced Friday that his state is already experiencing a greater-than-anticipated budget deficit.
In a press conference Friday, Newsom said that his budget proposal for the upcoming year had ballooned from $297 billion in January to $306.5 billion. As such, California is now facing a potential deficit of roughly $31.5 billion dollars, a $9 billion increase from the $22.5 billion deficit in the budget he proposed in January. The worsening budget shortfall comes even as the state proposes a gigantic reparations plan that dwarfs the state budget.
“This was not an easy budget, but I hope you see we tried to do our best to hold the line and take care of the most vulnerable, most needy, but still maintain prudence,” Newsom said during the press conference, via the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-05-12/california-budget-deficit-need-to-know" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Times</a>. “I have been very mindful of how concerned people have been about the impact on these fundamental core issues: education, homeless housing, healthcare, mental health, climate policy, public safety, broadly, and of course the issues of economic development, jobs, workforce development.”
Newsom has planned a series of cuts and offset spending in an effort to mitigate the state&#8217;s need to borrow. According to the <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article275315916.html?utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sacramento Bee</a>, the revised budget pares back an additional $1.1 billion in spending, on top of the $5.7 billion in &#8220;reductions&#8221; to key pillars of his agenda — including climate, transportation, housing and workforce initiatives — which he originally proposed in January. However, the Los Angeles Times notes that much of the &#8220;reductions&#8221; are rollbacks of planned increases, not actually cutting spending below current levels. Furthermore, part of the additional $1.1 billion paring comes from moving unused monies into the state&#8217;s general fund.
In addition to rolling back spending increases, the budget proposal plans to add $7.4 billion in deferred spending for child care, transportation, and education. It also delays some $695 million in spending until later years. The plan also includes $3.9 billion in &#8220;trigger reductions,&#8221; temporary cuts he can re-instate if California&#8217;s fiscal state improves later.
The budget closes the remaining gaps with $4.9 billion in borrowing and new revenue, $7.5 billion from shifting funds around, and $450 million from the state&#8217;s safety net reserves, leaving $450 million remaining. The <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/california-budget-deficit-18088922.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Francisco Chronicle</a> notes that Newsom plans to add to the reserves to hedge against a future recession, which is part of why the budget increased despite an increasing deficit.
Even as Newsom plans to use financial gimmicks and moving money around in order to make his state&#8217;s ends meet, California&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-reparations-task-force-approves-plan-giving-up-to-1-2-million-to-each-black-resident" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reparations</a> Task Force proposed its plan to repay residents who were descended from slaves or victims of discrimination. The nine-member panel, which became the first such task force in the United States to form in September 2020, advanced the plan recommendations in Oakland, California. The draft includes calculated dollar figures based on categories ranging from mass incarceration to housing discrimination, and other alleged injustices.
Based on a New York Times analysis, a black person living in California for 71 years — the average life expectancy of Black residents in California in 2021 — could receive up to $1.2 million. Some economists projected to The Associated Press that California could owe more than $800 billion in reparations, which more than doubles the state’s annual budget.

Police in the city of Enid responded to a report of someone calling for help. Two officers arrived on the scene, where they heard what sounded like a distinct cry for help. They rushed to the source of the sound, only to find that the damsel in distress was more of a nanny; a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/animals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">goat</a> who was upset he was taken out of his barn.
&#8220;Sometimes a call can really get your goat,&#8221; the Enid Police Department captioned a <a href="https://fb.watch/ktfEeCQcoS/">video</a> on its Facebook page. &#8220;Yesterday, Officer David Sneed and Officer Neal Storey responded to a report of someone heard yelling for help. Upon arriving, the officers began walking toward the faint sound of someone yelling. As they got closer, Officer Sneed could hear a distinct yell for &#8216;help.&#8217; Running toward the sound, the two soon discovered their damsel in distress was a very upset goat, who the farmer explained, had been separated from one of his friends.&#8221;
The video begins with bodycam footage of one of the officers walking along a trail, listening to the sound. &#8220;I think that&#8217;s a person,&#8221; one of the officers says. &#8220;That&#8217;s a person,&#8221; the officer repeats. In the distance, a sound which appears to be someone shouting can be heard; the officers run toward the sound. &#8220;It&#8217;s a goat,&#8221; the officer in front says. The two officers run through some trees and come upon the farm, where the goat can be heard bleating discontentedly, in a way that sounds like &#8220;help.&#8221; &#8220;Aww, it is,&#8221; the officer laughs.

The Facebook post thanked the two officers for acting swiftly, even if unnecessary in the end. &#8220;All in all, you really can’t say it was that baaad of a call,&#8221; it said.
A goat in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ca-mom-sues-county-fair-after-cops-raid-farm-to-seize-daughters-goat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> was the subject of a lawsuit last month after law enforcement had to track it down. California mom Jessica Long is suing officials from the Shasta County District Fair after law enforcement officials seized a goat that belonged to her daughter. The goat was auctioned off and set to be slaughtered, but Long kidnapped the goat during the fair, forcing officials to obtain a search warrant to get it back.
After a long exchange between Long and County Fair officials in which she refused to return the goat, the Shasta County Sheriff&#8217;s Office filed a search warrant affidavit for permission to seize the goat.
The search warrant said that property had been “stolen or embezzled” and was being held at a farm; it permitted police to “utilize breaching equipment to force open doorway(s), entry doors, exit doors, and locked containers&#8221;; and it listed areas to search, including “[t]he residence, including all rooms, attics, basements, and other parts therein, the surrounding grounds and any garages, sheds, storage rooms, and outbuildings of any kind large enough to accommodate a small goat.”
Long is suing the Sheriff’s office, the county, the fair, and others involved in the slaughter in federal court. It alleges that officials improperly used their authority and connections and wasted police resources by pressing criminal charges instead of handling the matter civilly.

California&#8217;s committee on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/reparations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reparations</a> for the descendants of slaves wants the state to apologize for the term &#8220;welfare queens.&#8221;
Part of the committee&#8217;s proposal for a reparations package to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> residents who descended from American slaves is for the state to issue a formal apology. Besides slavery, the proposal highlights a large number of policies and societal outcomes that negatively affected black people. Among them is then-Governor Ronald Reagan coining the term &#8220;welfare queens.&#8221;
&#8220;As California Governor (1967-1975), Ronald Reagan coined the term &#8216;welfare queen&#8217; as racist coding to promote his philosophy preferring a limited government,&#8221; the <a href="https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/ab3121-agenda9-ch16-recomm-apologize-05062023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">committee wrote</a>. &#8220;This terminology conjures stereotypes of single Black women as hypersexualized, aggressive, and dependent on government income with frivolous spending habits. Despite that the majority of welfare recipients are white, this racist label blamed African American women for shortfalls in the United States’ social safety net and suggested they were more responsible for their poverty than others. Then-Governor Reagan has also been reported to have made racist remarks regarding African delegates to the United Nations.&#8221;
But Reagan did not actually coin the term as Governor. The far-left publication <a href="https://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history/2013/12/linda_taylor_welfare_queen_ronald_reagan_made_her_a_notorious_american_villain.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Slate</a>, in a 2013 article on the term and its origins, reported that Reagan did not actually originate the term. Reagan gave a speech in January 1976, nearly a year after he left the Governor&#8217;s mansion, describing a Chicago woman named Linda Taylor who had been collecting more than $150,000 a year in payments from various social safety net programs. It was the Chicago Tribune who highlighted Taylor&#8217;s lavish lifestyle, and dubbed her the &#8220;welfare queen.&#8221;
Besides an apology for &#8220;welfare queens,&#8221; the reparations panel recommends that any apology from the state &#8220;must also include a censure of the gravest barbarities carried out on behalf of the State by its representative officers, governing bodies, and the people.&#8221; Those injustices include:

<li>A former Confederate serving as the first acting President of the University of California</li>
<li>California not passing any anti-slavery laws, despite being admitted to the Union as a free state</li>
<li>Confederate monuments</li>
<li>Zoning ordinances targeting black people</li>
<li>Suppressing the Black Panther Party in the 1960s and 1970s</li>
<li>Developing oil and gas projects and building hazardous waste plants near majority-black neighborhoods</li>
<li>Terminating affirmative action programs in public employment</li>
<li>Racial disparities in the child welfare system, law enforcement, the prison population, jury service, health care, the number of black physicians and licensed attorneys</li>
<li>Licensing requirements excluding black people from skilled jobs</li>
</ul>
The report is headlined by its proposal for direct payments to black resident of California. According to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-reparations-task-force-approves-plan-giving-up-to-1-2-million-to-each-black-resident" target="_blank" rel="noopener">final report</a>, black communities impacted by mass incarceration and over-policing aligning with the national War on Drugs could receive about $115,260 per person, or $2,352 each year they lived in California from 1971-2020.
Panel members said black residents impacted by lending and zoning redlining by banks between 1933 and 1977 could receive $3,366 each year they resided in California, capping at $148,099. Another method created by the panel calculated gaps between black and white “housing wealth” at $145,847 per person.
Other alleged injustices and discriminations in health were estimated at $13,619 per person for each year lived in California.

It’s mixed,” Laboy wrote in a note that was published on CNBC Wednesday, via the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/05/10/anheuser-busch-stock-downgraded-over-bud-light-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>. “At [Brazilian beverage giant] Ambev, we think the answer is ‘yes;’ in the U.S., we think it’s ‘no’,” Laboy wrote.
“The way this Bud Light crisis came about a month ago, management’s response to it and the loss of unprecedented volume and brand relevance raises many questions,” Laboy added. “Why did its US leadership underestimate the risk of pushback given the recent experience of other firms? Is A-B hiring the best people to grow the brands and gauge risk? If Budweiser and Bud Light are iconic American ideas that have long brought consumers together, why did these marketers fail to invite new consumers without alienating the core base of the firm’s largest brand?”
The fallout from Mulvaney&#8217;s partnership has caused Anheuser-Busch&#8217;s sales to <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/05/09/bud-lights-sales-drop-is-accelerating-amid-dylan-mulvaney-fiasco/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plummet</a>. Nationwide retail sales of Bud Light were down 23.4% year-over-year for the week of April 29, according to data from NielsenIQ and Bump Williams Consulting data, obtained by the New York Post. That number is worse than the 21.4% decline from the previous week. It is also the fourth consecutive week in which sales have dropped by double-digit figures.
The backlash has also spread across AB InBev&#8217;s other American brands: Budweiser sales dropped 11.4% for the week ending April 29; Michelob Ultra, the third highest-selling brand behind Bud Light and Modelo Especial, was down 4.4%; Natural Light was down 5.2%; Busch Light, 1.8%.
“It’s not just a Bud Light issue,” CEO Bump Williams told the New York Post. “It’s an Anheuser-Busch portfolio problem now.”

Party donors and operatives are trying to recruit NBA legends Grant Hill and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/dwyane-wade" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dwyane Wade</a> to run against Scott in 2024, according to a report from <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/grant-hill-dwayne-wade-democrats-senate-florida-rick-scott-rcna83401" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. Hill starred for the Orlando Magic in the 2000s, and Wade spent nearly all of his playing career with the Miami Heat, including 3 Championship runs with the team. Wade left the state after he retired, but claimed in April that his family &#8220;wouldn&#8217;t feel welcome&#8221; in his former home state due to increasingly anti-LBGT policies.
“Grant Hill has great name ID. He would raise a boatload of money and is one of the smartest guys you will ever meet,” attorney John Morgan told NBC News. Morgan is a national Democratic donor and a business partner of Hill&#8217;s who has reportedly talked directly with him about a potential run. “Grant Hill would beat the s*** out of Rick Scott,” he said.
Morgan said he brought up the prospect with two other Democratic activists at a dinner on Sunday. “I’m not sure it’s his time, but he would be great,&#8221; he said. &#8220;He’s competitive. I think he sees LeBron James as a billionaire and Magic Johnson almost a billionaire, and it gets his competitive juices flowing. I am not sure he is done with business.”
Hill is an NBA Hall of Fame guard/forward who played for the Orlando Magic from 2000-2007, and still lives in the Orlando area. He is a part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks, and an analyst for CBS and their affiliates. He is also a successful real estate developer, and has several lucrative endorsement deals. Hill has also been active in politics, supporting John Kerry, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton&#8217;s presidential campaigns.
Democratic donors are also talking about recruiting Wade, who played 13 seasons with the Miami Heat and won championships in 2006, 2012, and 2013. Besides being a legend in Florida Sports, Wade is also an advocate for transgenderism. In <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-dwyane-wade-says-12-year-old-trans-son-changed-her-name-ellen-degeneres-praises-him-on-parenting-skills" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020</a>, Wade declared that his preteen son, Zion, had come out as a transgender girl named Zaya. Wade called the child a &#8220;leader&#8221; in the LGBT community, and said he and his wife are proud LGBT &#8220;allies.&#8221;
But Wade, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dwyane-wade-said-he-left-florida-because-family-wouldnt-be-accepted-or-feel-comfortable" target="_blank" rel="noopener">left the state</a> after he retired from the NBA, said in April that recent legislation would make a potential return uncomfortable. He specifically pointed to Florida HB 1557, the Parental Rights in Education Bill, which prohibited schools from talking about gender and sexuality from grades K-3. The bill has been mischaracterized by the Left as the &#8220;Don&#8217;t Say Gay&#8221; bill.&#8221;
“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” Wade told sports journalist Rachel Nichols. “A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions. I mean, obviously, the tax [situation] is great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there. And so that’s one of the reasons why I don’t live there.&#8221;
“Dwyane Wade is a Florida legend, whose leadership past and present has a lot of folks in our state sending feelers out,” Ray Paultre, the executive director of the progressive donor coalition Florida Alliance, told NBC News. “We have seen former athletes, in both parties, bring something special to the political landscape. He hasn’t been officially approached, but he is on the list of four or five dream candidates to challenge Rick Scott.&#8221;
Scott narrowly defeated Democrat Bill Nelson in 2018, 50.1%-49.9%. But the state has shifted rightward since then; Scott&#8217;s Republican colleague, Marco Rubio, won his race last year by a massive margin 57%-41%, and Governor Ron DeSantis won re-election by an even larger margin, 59%-40%.

Senator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-lee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Lee</a> (R-UT) said Sunday that he has more than enough votes to prevent Democrats from passing a &#8220;clean&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/debt-ceiling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debt ceiling</a> increase.
Appearing on Fox News&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/shows/sunday-morning-futures" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sunday Morning Futures</a>,&#8221; Lee told host Maria Bartiromo that 45 Republicans, including himself, would vote against a bill that raises the debt ceiling without meaningful spending reforms. He said because of the Senate filibuster, that number is more than enough to block Democrats from passing a &#8220;clean&#8221; debt ceiling bill, and Lee believes that the conference will hold firm.
&#8220;As Kevin McCarthy, as Speaker of the House, meets with the White House, it&#8217;s imperative that he arrives position of negotiating power,&#8221; said Lee. &#8220;And to that end, we&#8217;ve got not only the Republican conference in the Senate backing what the Republicans in the House passed the week before last, we&#8217;ve also got a solid bloc of Republicans, more than enough, to block any sort of so-called &#8216;clean&#8217; debt ceiling bill from going forward, anything that raises the debt ceiling without substantive spending and budgetary reforms.&#8221;
Lee said that 43 Republicans signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) declaring their opposition to a clean debt ceiling bill, and two more promised to back the effort without signing the letter. In total, there are 45 Republicans who will vote to prevent ending the debate on a clean debt ceiling bill.
Furthermore, Lee said the conference would remain united to oppose the debt limit increase. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got 43 Republican Senators who have signed this letter pledging to do exactly as I just described, and then we&#8217;ve got two more who for strategic reasons didn&#8217;t want to sign, but indicated that they will stand with us in the votes, [and] a couple of others who may yet decide to join us,&#8221; said Lee. &#8220;So that&#8217;s more than enough. Even if we lost one or two here or there, we&#8217;d still be fine, and I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re gonna lose any of them.&#8221;
Lee led a group of 43 Senate Republicans who sent a <a href="https://www.lee.senate.gov/2023/5/sen-lee-leads-43-gop-senators-in-opposition-to-raising-debt-limit-without-substantive-spending-and-budget-reforms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to Schumer on Saturday opposing a clean debt ceiling increase.

Public schools in Broward County, Florida, will mandate clear backpacks for all students beginning next school year.
The school district announced Friday afternoon that all students would only be allowed to bring clear backpacks to school beginning in August. The decision came after a student in the district was arrested for making a school shooting threat. It also comes five years after the district was rocked by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
&#8220;Providing safe learning environments that are conducive to student learning is of the highest importance, not just for Broward County Public Schools but for school districts across the nation,&#8221; Interim Superintendent Earlean C. Smiley said in a statement, via <a href="https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/broward-county-public-schools-to-only-allow-clear-backpacks-next-school-year/3028855/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC 6 South Florida</a>. &#8220;This added layer of security is a game-changer. It will allow school security personnel and everyone on campus to quickly spot and report if someone has brought a prohibited item to school, and it will also help serve as a deterrent.&#8221;
<div class="recirc-module">According to the district <a href="https://www.browardschools.com/clearbackpacks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>, the new rules apply to all students in grades K-12. Only clear backpacks, purses, duffel bags, lunch boxes, and related items are allowed, and all contents within them must be visible. The only exceptions are:</div>

<li>small, non-transparent pouches for personal hygiene items</li>
<li>thermal food containers inside clear lunch boxes</li>
<li>school approved sport-specific carrying cases for sport equipment</li>
<li>approved instrument cases for musical instruments</li>

The decision came in response to a school shooting threat from a student this week. Police arrested an 18-year-old student at J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs after she allegedly threatened to carry out the shooting when the bell rang at the beginning of the school day, <a href="https://www.local10.com/news/local/2023/05/06/high-school-student-faces-19-charges-over-school-shooting-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Local 10</a> reported. The threat said that the assailant would &#8220;secretly&#8221; shoot students; it also said that there would be more than one shooter. The threat was not specific about which school it would target, which set off false alarms at schools throughout South Florida.
The suspect faces three counts of written threats and one count of false reports, both second-degree felonies; as well as 15 counts of knowingly disrupting or interfering with the lawful administration or functions of an educational institution, a second-degree misdemeanor.

Last week, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/flint-michigan-school-district-bans-backpacks-after-multiple-violent-threats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flint, Michigan</a>, school district went one step further. The Flint Board of Education voted unanimously last week to ban students from carrying backpacks at all. The decision came after two separate safety incidents occurred at Southwestern Classical Academy in Flint, both of which prompted officials to close schools in the area. The policy went into effect on Monday.
As of Monday, students are <a href="https://www.flintschools.org/apps/news/article/1757540" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not allowed</a> to carry backpacks into school buildings. Small purses carrying personal items, clear plastic bags with gym clothes, and lunchboxes are allowed within reason, the letter noted, but those bags will still be subject to search. If a student brings a backpack to school, the office will not keep the student’s belongings. Instead, he or she will be sent to the school office and a parent or guardian will pick up the student’s belongings. Athletes will also have to drop off their equipment at the front office every day.
“Across the country, we have seen an increase in threatening behavior and contraband, including weapons, being brought into schools at all levels,” Superintendent Kevelin Jones wrote in a <a href="https://www.flintschools.org/apps/news/article/1757528" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to parents Thursday. “Backpacks make it easier for students to hide weapons, which can be disassembled and harder to identify or hidden in pockets, inside books or under other items. Clear backpacks do not completely fix this issue. By banning backpacks altogether and adding an increased security presence across the district, we can better control what is being brought into our buildings.”

Senator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/sherrod-brown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sherrod Brown</a> (D-OH) took hundreds of thousands of dollars from three drug companies at the center of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/opioid-crisis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opioid epidemic</a> in the U.S.
According to FEC financial reports cited by the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/05/05/ohio-democratic-senator-took-243k-from-opioid-giants-fec/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>, Brown raked in more than $200,000 from political action committees associated with Cardinal Health, McKesson, and AmerisourceBergen since 2003. The three pharmaceutical giants paid out a $26 billion settlement to settle thousands of individual lawsuits from states and local governments. Ohio is also one of the states hardest hit by the opioid epidemic.
According to <a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/receipts/?data_type=processed&amp;committee_id=C00264697&amp;committee_id=C00331694&amp;committee_id=C00690073&amp;contributor_name=C00108035&amp;contributor_name=C00332833&amp;contributor_name=C00400929" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FEC filings</a>, Brown took in a total of $144,500 in contributions to his campaign and leadership PAC, America Works PAC. He raised $85,000 from Cardinal Health, $56,500 from AmerisourceBergen, and $1,500 from McKesson. The latest donation was a $2,500 donation from Cardinal Health on September 21. The New York Post further reported that he took in $54,100 from lobbyists who worked for the three pharmaceutical distributors, including $5,600, the legal maximum, from a McKesson lobbyist in 2020 and again in 2021.
Separately, individual employees <a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/receipts/?data_type=processed&amp;committee_id=C00264697&amp;committee_id=C00331694&amp;committee_id=C00690073&amp;contributor_employer=cardinal+health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">donated</a> another $40,025. Cardinal Health Chief Information Officer Mark MacNaughton was a frequent small-dollar donor. Former Cardinal Health CEO George S. Barrett donated a total of $15,400 between 2011 and 2019, all in large amounts. Theodore Frank of McKesson donated $1,000 to his 2018 campaign. Rita Ersfeld Norton of AmerisourceBergen gave him $1,000 in 2017.
Together, Cardinal Health, McKesson, and AmerisourceBergen account for 90% of the U.S. supply chains for drugs and medical supplies. But the companies have allegedly been complicit in the proliferation of opioids; the New York Post reported that for more than a decade, the three pharma giants failed to track suspicious orders or increases in opioid use among purchasers, in spite of doctors potentially criminally overprescribing the drugs.
The three companies, along with Johnson &amp; Johnson, settled a $26 billion lawsuit with 49 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and thousands of municipalities in February 2022. In a <a href="https://www.mckesson.com/About-McKesson/Newsroom/Press-Releases/2022/Distributors-Approve-Opioid-Settlement-Agreement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">joint statement</a> in February, the three companies announced that, beginning on April 2, 2022, they would pay out more than $19.5 billion over the next 18 years: Amerisource is set to pay out $6.1 billion; Cardinal Health, $6 billion; and McKesson, $7.4 billion. The settlement dealt with 46 of the 49 states; Alabama, Oklahoma, and Washington State refused the settlement. West Virginia settled previously. The Cherokee Nation also settled separately, and the remaining Native Americans had reached an agreement in principle at the time.
The New York Post also reported that the Drug Enforcement Administration settled a $150 million payout for violating federal controlled substance laws in 2017, the largest penalty in the DEA&#8217;s history.
Ohio had an estimated 5,068 deaths from drug overdoses in 2021, the fifth-highest in the nation, according to the CDC&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Vital Statistics System</a>. The CDC reported 107,622 deaths from drug overdoses in 2021, the highest number on record, as The Daily Wire reported last year. The New York Times <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/record-number-of-americans-died-from-drug-overdoses-in-2021-cdc-data-show" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time that synthetic opioids accounted for 71,000 deaths.

The security guard who shot and killed a shoplifting suspect in self-defense spoke out about the incident Friday.
Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony is the security guard at Walgreens in downtown <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/san-francisco" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Francisco</a>. On April 27, Anthony shot and killed an alleged shoplifter, later identified as local transgender activist Banko Brown. In an interview with <a href="https://sfstandard.com/criminal-justice/walgreens-shooting-guard-who-killed-banko-brown-gives-interview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The San Francisco Standard</a>, Anthony spoke out about the incident and the effects it has had on him.
“[I’m] still dealing with it, still don&#8217;t understand and don&#8217;t have the time to reflect,” Anthony said. “It&#8217;s not like I go through this many times. This is a very life-changing matter.&#8221;
Anthony declined to elaborate on the details of the shooting. According to a <a href="https://sfstandard.com/criminal-justice/walgreens-killing-heres-what-we-know-about-banko-browns-shooting-by-a-security-guard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thursday report</a> from the San Francisco Standard, police said that Anthony tried to stop Brown from shoplifting. He was still standing inside the store when Brown walked out. Brown then turned around and allegedly spat on Anthony and raised a hand to him. It was at that point that Anthony drew his gun and fired.
Anthony pointed out that security guards like him are under immense pressure in confrontational situations like that, and that it happened very fast. “This is important for more people to be more aware of,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was happening too frequently.&#8221;
“It&#8217;s a lot to deal with. It&#8217;s a lot of pressure,&#8221; he added. &#8220;A person can only take so much,” Anthony went on to say. “When you are limited to certain options, something will happen.”
Being a security guard is difficult because you are on your own in more ways than one, he added. &#8220;Who has my back? Nobody?” he said. “You are left with no support. It&#8217;s a frightening feeling with a lot of people around you” who could do you harm, he added.
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement to news outlets Monday that after looking at surveillance footage and statements from both Anthony and witnesses, her office will not press charges against Anthony in the shooting. “The evidence clearly shows that the suspect believed he was in mortal danger and acted in self-defense,” the statement read, via The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/03/us/san-francisco-walgreens-shooting.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. The statement called the situation a &#8220;tragedy,&#8221; but said they could not charge Anthony in good faith. “We cannot bring forward charges when there is credible evidence of reasonable self-defense,&#8221; the office stated. &#8220;Doing so would be unethical and create false hope for a successful prosecution.”

In separate comments to the <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/walgreens-shooting-sf-banko-brown-charges-18074873.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Francisco Chronicle</a>, Jenkins said that “both threats of force and physical force were used” in the confrontation. “It’s never easy to have to come to that conclusion,” Jenkins said, but “my personal feelings cannot be what governs my decision. It has to be the law.”
Jenkins&#8217; decision prompted outrage from activists in the community. One such activist, Lia McGeever, vented her outrage during a city Board of Supervisors meeting. Declaring that “trans-genocide of this country, in this city, has brought me to” it, McGeever tore off her face mask and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trans-activist-shrieks-at-sf-supervisors-over-release-of-guard-who-shot-trans-person" target="_blank" rel="noopener">screamed</a> for 10 seconds, pausing to yell, “Imagine that.” The activist screamed for another five seconds, then yelled, “I hate this. I hate what you’ve done to us. I hate what you’re doing to us. I hate you, board of supervisors. I hate you, London Breed. I hate you, Jenkins.”
After screaming for another five seconds, the activist yelled, “F*** you. F***ing ay, man. F***. Cowards.”
