President Joe Biden laughed over the weekend when asked what his thoughts were on the crisis on the U.S. southern border, claiming that the situation was “much better” than people thought.
Biden was asked during a bike ride near his beach home in Rehoboth, Delaware, on Sunday how he thought things were going at the border.
“Much better than you all expected,” Biden responded while laughing.
When asked if he had any plans to visit the border, a crisis many critics and experts have said his policies caused, Biden said “no” and added that it would be “disruptive” if he went.

Biden’s remarks come after 83,000 migrants were apprehended last week trying to enter the U.S. illegally — the most in U.S. history — amid the ending of Title 42, a public health statute used at the border during the pandemic to help stem the flow of illegal immigration. In anticipation of its end, up to 700,000 people, including many from Central America, were waiting at the border for entry.
Brandon Judd, president of a union for Border Patrol agents, said the total number of apprehensions topped more than 10,000 on multiple days last week.

For context of how devastating those numbers are for federal agents to deal with, former President Barack Obama’s DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said during an MSNBC interview in 2019 that 1,000 apprehensions of illegal border crossers “overwhelms the system” and that he could not “begin to imagine what 4,000 a day looks like.”

Sen. Ted Cruz sounded off late last week over the crisis as he visited the border, declaring it “a full on invasion.”
“It is a crisis. And the Biden administration is cheering it on … they want this to happen,” Cruz said. “They want more people to come in, and they don’t care about the body bags that are piling up.”
