Former Disney star Demi Lovato said her team took extreme measures to make her image “look thin,” which she said included barricading her into her hotel room once.

During the 30-year-old actress’ Tuesday appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast with Alex Cooper, the host asked Lovato in what ways her management team was “controlling her life” from “18 to 25.”  The superstar said that when “someone” came into the picture every aspect of her life “was controlled,” including what she was allowed to eat, which she said ultimately lead to her near-fatal overdose in July 2018.

“It became controlling around my food and for someone in recovery from an eating disorder, that’s so dangerous,” Lovato shared. “It actually exacerbated my eating disorder to the point where I became bulimic again. From 2016 to 2018 I was dealing with that.”

“I’ve never talked about this before but there was one time when I had binged and purged one night,” she added. “I came clean to my team and said, ‘Hey this happened.’ You know I snuck out of my hotel room because they didn’t let me have phones in my hotel rooms because they didn’t want me to call room service.”

“I didn’t have food in my hotel room, like snacks in the mini bar, because they didn’t want me to eat the snacks,” the singer continued. “After I told them what had happened, my security guard walked by my room, or was made aware that they had built, they’d like barricaded me into my hotel room. They’d put furniture outside of my door so that I couldn’t get out and sneak out and eat if I wanted to. So it was that level of controlling when it came to my food, which just made my eating disorder worse.”

The “Sober” hitmaker said in 2017 things got worse and she said she knew she needed to go back to treatment to “get help.” But this same controlling person on her team told her, “‘You’re not sick enough.’” That was his way of saying, ‘No, you’re not going back to treatment because that’ll look bad on me.’ So I didn’t. I didn’t go back into treatment.”

Lovato explained how at that point, she “felt trapped” and decided the only way she could “get out” was to overdose and blow “everything up,” which is exactly what happened in 2018.

“You know, less than a year later I ended up overdosing,” the “Heart Attack” hitmaker said. “And so I think it was like, I felt trapped. I felt like I couldn’t get out of this situation. And my way of blowing everything up was relapsing on drugs and alcohol. Because they always said, ‘If you use, we’re out,’ and I was like, alright, time to get out. Bye.”
