At least one person was killed in New York City on Tuesday and five others were injured after a parking garage collapsed in Lower Manhattan.
The collapse happened around 4 p.m. when the second floor of the five-story parking structure gave way and collapsed onto the ground floor, The New York Times reported.
“As far as we can tell, so far there were six patients — six workers in the building — at the time of the collapse,” FDNY Chief of Operations John Esposito said at a press conference.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote on Twitter: “Our first responders rescued five of our fellow New Yorkers from the partial collapse of a parking garage on Ann Street between Nassau and William. They have been taken to the hospital.”
Adams confirmed that at least one person had died and said that officials remained hopeful that no one else had been harmed in the garage.
“While we are grateful for the amazing work of our first responders, including the innovative technology they used as part of rescue efforts, the work won’t end tonight,” he added. “An investigation into how this happened is under way. We will get answers.”

Esposito added that the fire department “deployed our robot dog into the building” which gave “us a video inside and then we’re able to fly drones inside to conduct an assessment and conduct searches,” Esposito added.

A witness told local media that he heard “a really big boom” before the parking garage collapsed.
“We heard a really big boom, like something out of the ordinary it was just a really loud noise like something exploded,” Gabriel Yahoudaief said. “I saw people running out quickly from the scene, it was insane. Everyone was scared. Everyone thought that was their last time being alive.”
