The Justice Department announced Monday that it may have reached a settlement in its antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster and parent company Live Nation Entertainment.
Though nothing is confirmed yet, the DOJ announced in Manhattan federal court that the case was likely nearing a conclusion after the term sheet was signed on Thursday, per the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/livenation-antitrust-justice-department-0a6ef66f497e5f626096de753bfff8ce">Associated Press</a>.
An unnamed official told the outlet that the terms included Live Nation paying a fine of up to $280 million and divesting some properties to allow for more competition in the ticket sales industry. The official said the settlement was a “win-win for everybody.”
Certain states were allegedly not on board with the proposed terms, however, and Judge Arun Subramanian called the terms “entirely unacceptable.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement that the settlement “fails to address the monopoly at the center of this case.” 
“My attorney general colleagues and I have a strong case against Live Nation, and we will continue our lawsuit to protect consumers and restore fair competition to the live entertainment industry,” she said, adding that she preferred to move forward with the trial.
Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown has a similar take, saying, “[the] case against Live Nation is strong, and the state coalition is committed to holding the company accountable for its illegal behavior, protecting consumers and restoring competition to this market,” the outlet noted.
The lawsuit was originally filed in 2024 under the Biden administration, as WSJ <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/law/live-nation-reaches-settlement-in-federal-antitrust-case-9f0c6fb7">reported</a>. About 40 states came together to sue the entertainment company.

A landmark antitrust trial against Live Nation began this week in New York with the Department of Justice seeking to prove that the entertainment company, which owns Ticketmaster, maintains an illegal monopoly over the concert ticket industry.
U.S. Justice Department lawyer David Dahlquist summarized the charges during opening statements on Tuesday, per the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/live-nation-ticketmaster-antitrust-trial-ecfd6cb3e77459412584ed002653bc8f">Associated Press</a>. 
“This case is about power, the power of a monopolist to control competition,” Dahlquist said. “Today, the concert ticket industry is broken.”

The complaint alleges that the company engages in &#8220;anticompetitive conduct&#8221; that results in higher fees, fewer opportunities for artists, and limited ticketing options. 
Per <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/live-nation-ticketmaster-antitrust-trial-doj-what-to-know-rcna261400">NBC News</a>, Live Nation controls 400 musical artists and owns or controls 265 concert venues in North America. 
“Through interconnected agreements associated with Live Nation’s various roles as ticketer, promoter, artist manager, and venue owner,” the complaint states. “Live Nation has created a feedback loop that pushes ticketing and ancillary fees higher while allowing Live Nation to be on all sides of numerous transactions and thereby double-dip from the pockets of fans, artists, and venues.”
This trial, expected to last six weeks, came about after a 2024 lawsuit alleged that Live Nation unfairly dominated concert ticketing and promotion, leaving no room for competitors. The filing occurred after the infamous 2022 incident when Taylor Swift&#8217;s Eras Tour pre-sale tickets caused the Ticketmaster site to crash, with thousands of fans and bots swarming the site all at once.

“To have a strong capitalist system, you have to have competition. You can’t have too much consolidation. Something that unfortunately for this country — as an ode to Taylor Swift, I will say — we know all too well,” Minnesota Democrat Sen. Marriott argued during the trial’s opening day that the company supports the music industry and is “all about bringing joy to people’s lives.”

On Monday, in a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court blocked a New York trial court order that would have required redrawing a congressional district ahead of the 2026 election.
By granting a stay requested by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and state election officials, the Court’s conservative majority sent a clear message: state courts cannot use the pretext of &#8220;vote dilution&#8221; to mandate simple racial discrimination or justify actions that violate the Equal Protection Clause.
The case centers on New York’s 11th Congressional District, encompassing Staten Island and southern Brooklyn. Activists attempted to use the state constitution to force the creation of a &#8220;crossover&#8221; district, specifically designed to ensure that minority voters — who comprise approximately 30% of Staten Island&#8217;s population — could elect their preferred candidates.
In January, Justice Jeffrey Pearlman of the New York Supreme Court, a trial-level court, <a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/2026/03/supreme-court-grants-republicans-request-to-pause-order-to-redraw-new-york-congressional-map/">sided</a> with these activists. He prohibited the use of the existing congressional map and ordered the Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw the lines based on explicit racial targets. Critics of the order argued that it amounted to a race-based gerrymander targeting the only Republican representative in New York City, prioritizing identity politics over neutral districting.
Justice Samuel Alito cut through the legal jargon to identify the trial court&#8217;s order for what it was: a violation of the 14th Amendment. Alito made clear that a state court cannot authorize redistricting for the &#8220;express purpose&#8221; of producing race-based outcomes.
Citing its 2023 decision in Students for Fair Admissions, the Supreme Court reiterated that the government may only engage in race-based action under &#8220;extraordinary&#8221; circumstances, such as remediating specific, identified past discrimination. In granting the stay, the majority suggested that neither the lower court nor the challengers provided sufficient justification. As Alito noted: &#8220;A state law cannot authorize the violation of federal rights.&#8221;
The Supreme Court’s decision is good news for Republican leaders in states like Texas and Louisiana, where Democrats and civil rights groups have argued that the states must draw more &#8220;opportunity districts&#8221; to account for minority population growth.
By granting the stay, the Court signaled skepticism toward making special &#8220;crossover&#8221; districts to achieve race-based electoral outcomes. That reasoning could make it more difficult for groups to demand new maps based predominantly on racial demographics.
The Court also dealt with the Purcell principle, the doctrine cautioning against judicial changes to election rules too close to an election. Usually, judges aren&#8217;t supposed to change voting rules right before people vote, which could cause confusion.
Now, the Supreme Court is saying this &#8220;no-changes zone&#8221; starts much earlier — even four to eight months before the election. This acts like an emergency brake, stopping lower-court judges from forcing states to change their maps at the last minute. It keeps things stable and focuses on fair rules instead of meeting racial quotas.
This ruling is a win for those who believe the Constitution is colorblind. It stops what critics viewed as a partisan attempt to use race as a tool for political gain and ensures that New York’s 2026 elections proceed under established, legislatively enacted maps rather than experimental racial quotas.

New York City landlords are firing back at Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s director of Tenant Protection after comments calling property ownership “white supremacist.”
Cea Weaver, a high-ranking operative within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has faced repeated criticism for past social media posts attacking homeownership.
“The reality is that for centuries, we have really treated property as an individualized good and not as a collective good,” Weaver said in one video from 2021. She added that the transition to “shared equity” would target “white families” and “some POC (people of color) families who are homeowners.”
In a social media post from 2019, she said “homeownership is a weapon of white supremacy masquerading as ‘wealth building’ public policy,” The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/marxism-in-the-metropolis-nycs-new-tenant-czar-has-targeted-white-homeowners-private-property">reported</a>.
In response to Weaver’s past comments, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/nyc-landlords-fire-back-racist-mamdani-aides-claim-ties-homeownership-white-supremacy">told</a> Fox News: “Civil Rights Division of the DOJ is on high alert as to the radical agenda promised by Mayor Mamdani, much of which is at odds with our federal Constitutional and civil rights norms.”
Now, NYC landlords are accusing Weaver of racism for ignoring immigrant property owners in the city.
“I think that the true socialist views toward housing and taking housing away from people like myself is the racist element in this,” Jan Lee, a third-generation Chinatown property owner and board member of the Small Property Owners of New York (SPONY), told Fox News Digital. “I think when you start to lump all of us together and say that we’re all the bad thing that&#8217;s keeping people out of housing, that’s racist. We’re right out of the gate in this administration, starting off with extreme hostility for property owners.”
Ann Korchak, board president of SPONY, called Weaver’s comments “insulting.”
“To say that it’s racist to own property is an insult to every single immigrant who ever came here,” Korchak said.
Weaver would be “blown away by the diversity” of NYC property owners, Korchak said.
“New York has a rich tradition of immigrants kind of reaching the American dream through property ownership,” Korchak said. “So many of our members and others who don’t even know that we exist came to America because they didn’t have rights in wherever they came from.”
Weaver recently led the first of five planned “Rental Ripoff Hearings” intended to “uncover policy recommendations that will more effectively and systematically protect tenants in their homes,” The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/we-went-to-zohran-mamdanis-first-rental-ripoff-hearing-everyone-was-mad">reported</a>.
At the meeting, Weaver said the mayor’s office would use the feedback collected at the Rental Ripoff hearings to inform housing policy going forward.
Private landlords said the hearings are too one-sided.
“They should pull from a combination of tenants, landlords, financiers, developers, and economists,” New York real estate broker Adam Frisch told The Daily Wire. “Everybody looks at the situation with their own biases, and it’s the role of the mayor to sit down with tenants and landlords and say I know you’re both unhappy. Let’s see what we can do.”

A 27-year-old man accused of a separate crime was arrested Thursday in relation to the mob that surrounded NYPD police officers and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/it-was-a-snowball-fight-mamdani-downplays-unruly-mob-that-injured-nypd-officers">pelted them with snowballs</a> earlier this week.
Gusmane Coulibaly was detained by NYPD officers after the department released images of four people, including Coulibaly, wanted after two officers were injured when a mob of people hurled snowballs at them at Washington Square Park on Monday. The NYPD said that Coulibaly was arrested earlier this month for &#8220;attempted robbery in the transit system.&#8221;

The three other suspects wanted by New York police remain at large, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/26/us-news/punk-with-rap-sheet-arrested-in-nypd-snowball-attack-and-he-is-not-a-kid-as-mayor-mamdani-insisted/">reported</a>. It remains unclear what charges Coulibaly faces.
New York City&#8217;s democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani put himself at odds with other city and state officials, including Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, when he told reporters he disagreed with calls for arrests following the snowball attack.
The mayor urged people to treat the city’s law enforcement with respect, but added that the videos he saw of the incident only showed a snowball fight that &#8220;got out of hand.&#8221;
“Look, I’ve seen the videos of this snowball fight. I think that it was a snowball fight,&#8221; he said, later adding, “I can just tell you from the video I saw it looked like kids at a snowball fight.”
Mamdani&#8217;s office doubled down on the mayor&#8217;s stance on Thursday, with Mamdani spokeswoman Dora Pekec telling The Daily Wire, “As the mayor has said, police officers deserve to be treated with respect. The videos he saw showed a snowball fight that got out of hand. He does not believe this situation rises to the level of criminal charges.”
The incident took place after a massive storm dumped around two feet of snow on New York City and brought much of the Big Apple to a standstill on Monday.
One video of the incident shows officers attempting to walk through the crowd as people slung snowballs at them and ran up behind them to dump large chunks of snow and ice on their heads. Some people in the crowd stood in front of the officers as they tried to walk through the park, and the officers threw at least two people to the ground. Another video showed a group of police officers fleeing the scene as the crowd continued to hurl snowballs at them. Two officers were treated at the hospital for lacerations on their faces.
Tisch called the mob’s actions “disgraceful” and “criminal,&#8221; while Hochul said it is &#8220;never acceptable to throw anything at a police officer.&#8221;
The NYPD Police Benevolent Association celebrated the arrest of Coulibaly on Thursday and blasted Mayor Mamdani, <a href="https://x.com/NYCPBA/status/2027018775321559211">writing</a> on social media, &#8220;A 27-year-old is not a &#8216;kid,&#8217; @NYCMayor.&#8221;
&#8220;This individual is an adult with a recent attempted robbery arrest, and your message was that it’s OK for him to assault police officers for doing their job,&#8221; the police union added. &#8220;This arrest sends a different message. We’re grateful to all who have worked so hard on this case. There is more work to be done…&#8221;

Snow is falling across parts of the Northeast on Sunday and is expected to intensify overnight and into Monday, with many regions under blizzard warnings.
Boston, Atlantic City, Portsmouth, and New York City are expected to be among the hardest hit, with meteorologists forecasting more than a foot of snow in some areas. Nearly 100 million people across the region are expected to be impacted by the intense winter conditions, which will be amplified by strong gusts of wind.
The National Weather Service warned that “wet snow and strong winds lasting into Monday” could trigger widespread power outages.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly as falling temperatures cause slush to refreeze overnight into ice, as conditions escalate into a full blizzard. New York Governor Kathy Hochul <a href="https://abc7ny.com/live-updates/how-snow-nyc-weekend-winter-coastal-storm-weather-forecast-nj-ny-ct-tri-state-area/18626210/">painted</a> a grim picture Sunday morning, calling the day the “calm before the storm” and warning that “the worst is yet to come.” She added bluntly, “Lives are at stake.”
In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a local state of emergency ahead of the city’s first <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/weather/live-updates-snow-totals-blizzard-nyc-nj-timing-storm-radar/6466668/?cardId=1%3A2%3A6467058&amp;_osource=SocialFlowTwt_NYBrand">blizzard warning</a> in nearly a decade. Snow began falling at around 8 a.m. on Sunday, and meteorologists predict around 16 inches of snow will accumulate between Sunday evening and Monday morning, accompanied by wind gusts of 40-60 miles per hour.
In preparation, Mamdani has declared that all roads will be closed to all vehicles, including e-bikes and scooters, beginning at 9 p.m. The closure will last until Monday at 12 p.m. One New York parent <a href="https://x.com/ycinnewyork/status/2025638618560098590">reported</a> getting texts in English and French and emails in Bangla and Russian from New York City public schools. Mamdani also canceled school entirely on Monday, shifting away from the remote learning approach used during the city’s last major snowstorm.
The mayor also asked citizens to volunteer and get paid to shovel snow. In New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a state of emergency, saying, “I am urging you to stay off the roads Sunday through Monday.”
New Jersey is expected to face some of the harshest winds, with gusts reaching 45 miles per hour near the Delaware River and up to 60 miles per hour along the shore. Coastal flooding is also a concern. The National Weather Service said, “One to two feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.”
In Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu declared a snow emergency, also closing schools on Monday along with other government buildings. Forecasters expect temperatures to rise later in the week, which could help alleviate lingering snow and ice impacts once the storm moves out of the region.

The Winter Storm Severity Index is <a href="https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/wwd/wssi/wssi.php">reporting</a> “major impacts” along the Northeast coast, from Delaware up to Massachusetts. The storm is expected to last from Sunday morning through Monday evening, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/02/21/weather/blizzard-snowstorm-new-york-northeast-climate">reported</a>.
In addition to cold weather, strong winds could cause coastal flooding from Delaware to Long Island, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The National Weather Service also <a href="https://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/discussions/hpcdiscussions.php?disc=pmdspd">noted</a> that “travel will be extremely dangerous” and warned of “likely” power outages. Monday commutes will likely be disrupted, as the Weather Channel <a href="https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/2026-02-18-east-coast-storm-noreaster-forecast">recommends</a> people stay off the roads.

Meteorologist Jim Cantore <a href="http://x.com/jimcantore/status/2025199478693613855?s=46">said</a> on X the storm is “long overdue.”
“It’s been years since I’ve seen this kind of blizzard warning for the Northeast,” he said.
The storm will turn into a bomb cyclone — a term for a storm with rapidly decreasing pressure — by Sunday, targeting cities such as Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia.
New York City is expecting thirteen to eighteen inches of snow and wind speeds up to 55 mph, <a href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/weather/weather-stories/blizard-warning-nyc-nj-meaning-how-much-snow/6466190/">according</a> to NBC New York. It has been nine years since the city was under a blizzard warning, the Weather Channel <a href="https://weather.com/storms/winter/news/2026-02-18-east-coast-storm-noreaster-forecast">reported</a>. The city has seen more than twenty-two inches of snow this year, compared to almost thirteen inches last year.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has resumed homeless encampment sweeps to get people inside before the storm hits, the outlet reported. Cold temperatures are expected to be less severe with this storm.
Mamdani faced criticism earlier this month when nineteen homeless people died from cold weather after Mamdani ended the encampment sweeps, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-yorks-winter-death-toll-rises-to-19-curtis-sliwa-faults-sanctuary-city-policies">reported</a>.
The mayor is expected to brief the city on the storm later today.

Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone Health, which has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hospitals-clinics-are-promoting-services-to-gender-nonconforming-kids-here-are-47-of-them">offered gender procedures</a> for children since at least <a href="https://nyunews.com/news/2025/02/02/nyu-langone-gender-affirming-care/#:~:text=NYU%20Langone%20Health%20is%20a%20leading%20institution,two%20patients%20under%20the%20age%20of%2019.">2020</a>, cited the &#8220;current regulatory environment,&#8221; along with the &#8220;recent departure&#8221; of its medical director, for its &#8220;difficult decision to discontinue our Transgender Youth Health Program,&#8221; The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/17/nyregion/nyu-hospital-transgender-youth.html">reported</a>.
NYU Langone previously <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20220828054900/https://nyulangone.org/locations/child-study-center/gender-sexuality-service">stated</a> on its website that it prescribes &#8220;gender-affirming medical interventions, including puberty suppression, gender-affirming hormone treatments, and gender-affirming surgery&#8221; for gender-confused children. The hospital&#8217;s <a href="https://nyulangone.org/locations/child-study-center/gender-sexuality-service">website</a> no longer mentions gender surgery for children and focuses on &#8220;mental health services.&#8221;
Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hospitals-across-u-s-stop-transitioning-children-after-trump-signs-order-protecting-kids">signed</a> an executive order to protect children from irreversible gender procedures by threatening to strip federal funding from hospitals that perform the procedures. Following Trump&#8217;s order last year, NYU Langone began winding down its &#8220;Transgender Youth Health Program,&#8221; canceling appointments for children, including two 12-year-olds who were supposed to start puberty blockers, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hospitals-across-u-s-stop-transitioning-children-after-trump-signs-order-protecting-kids">reported</a> at the time. However, some parents told the Times that the hospital kept appointments for children who were already on puberty blockers or hormone therapy.
Last June, the FBI set up a <a href="https://x.com/FBI/status/1929587710894739567">tip line</a> for Americans to report &#8220;any hospitals, clinics, or practitioners&#8221; that &#8220;mutilate&#8221; children &#8220;under the guise of gender-affirming care.&#8221; The Trump administration <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/01/nyregion/transgender-care-lawsuit-trump.html">reportedly</a> served subpoenas to multiple hospitals last year, including NYU Langone, seeking more information on their youth gender clinics.
In December, the Trump administration began implementing the president&#8217;s executive order to protect children by proposing rules to strip federal funding from hospitals that continue to perform gender procedures on children.
Democrats have pushed back against Trump&#8217;s effort to go after hospitals and doctors that promote gender procedures for children. In response to Trump&#8217;s crackdown on hospitals performing gender procedures on children, New York joined a coalition of Democrat-led states that sued the Trump administration in an effort to stop the federal government&#8217;s investigation into hospitals and doctors that perform the life-altering procedures on children.
President Trump&#8217;s executive action to protect children from the harmful procedures followed numerous Republican-led states banning the so-called gender-affirming treatments and procedures for minors. Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and many other states took action to protect children beginning in 2023, shortly after Daily Wire host Matt Walsh&#8217;s documentary &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/what-is-a-woman">What is a Woman?</a>&#8221; exposed the dangers of gender procedures.
After &#8220;What is a Woman?&#8221; became one of the most-watched documentaries of the year, Walsh held a rally in Nashville and met with state leaders in multiple states to advocate for ending &#8220;child mutilation.&#8221;
Thanks to recent laws passed by Republican-led states and the efforts of President Trump, the tide has turned in the debate on gender procedures for children. The Trump administration and advocates for protecting children from gender procedures celebrated another <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-fight-is-not-over-major-medical-org-rejects-transgender-surgeries-for-kids">major win</a> earlier this month when the American Society of Plastic Surgeons acknowledged that &#8220;evidence did not support genital procedures or removing the breasts of young girls who identify as boys.&#8221;

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned that his preliminary budget would be a tax on working- and middle-class New Yorkers on Tuesday.
“Property taxes would be raised by 9.5%. This would effectively be a tax on working- and middle-class New Yorkers who have a median income of $122,000,” the mayor said.
Mamdani unveiled his preliminary budget proposal for 2027, outlining a plan to close a projected $5.4 billion deficit. Under state law, New York City must pass a balanced budget. To bridge the gap, Mamdani proposed a 9.5% increase in property taxes and “raiding” the city&#8217;s Rainy Day Fund and the Retiree Health Benefits Trust Fund. “The city would also take $980 million from its Rainy Day Fund and take $229 million from the Retiree Health Benefits Trust,&#8221; he said.
Mamdani&#8217;s proposal would increase the city&#8217;s overall spending from former Mayor Eric Adams&#8217; <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2025/05/mayor-adams-releases-best-budget-ever-fiscal-year-2026-executive-budget-makes-significant">$115 billion</a> budget to $127 billion. Mamdani described the property tax hike and reserve raid as a last resort, preferring to instead raise taxes on high-income earners and corporations, which would require approval from New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who has promised New Yorkers she will not raise taxes in 2026. Without Hochul agreeing to raise taxes, Mamdani is left with raising property taxes as his administration&#8217;s primary lever.
“To rely on a property tax increase and a significant draw-down of reserves to close our gap would have dire consequences,&#8221; stated Mamdani&#8217;s Comptroller Mark Levine. &#8220;Our property tax system is profoundly unfair and inconsistent, and an across-the-board increase in this tax would be regressive. Drawing down reserves during a period of economic growth would leave us vulnerable to economic turbulence next year.&#8221;
Mamdani would not be the first mayor to draw from the reserves, as the city tapped the funds during the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, however, the city would be tapping the funds &#8220;despite a strong economy and record revenues from Wall Street.&#8221;
Mamdani attributed the budget shortfalls to former Mayor Eric Adams&#8217; administration underfunding $7.54 billion in six key areas, including cash assistance, rental assistance, shelter, due process cases, judgement &amp; claims, and the city subsidy structural deficit.
Since the 1970s, New York has been legally required to balance its budget when the state legislature passed the Financial Emergency Act for the City of New York in September of 1975, mandating a balanced budget. The legislation was passed to prevent New York City from defaulting on its debt and going bankrupt after a decade of the city covering daily operations with <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/new-york-fiscal-crisis-1970s-migrants-welfare-costs#:~:text=Once%20Beame%20took%20office%2C%20the,to%20loan%20to%20New%20York.">short-term loans</a>.
Turning to reserves to meet Mamdani&#8217;s mandate could raise red flags with credit rating agencies. Using reserves to plug recurring deficits may signal structural imbalance, increasing the risk of a municipal bond downgrade. A downgrade would force the city to pay higher interest rates to borrow, ultimately driving up debt service costs and putting even more pressure on the budget the law requires to be balanced.
Costs may continue to rise for New York City. <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/watchdog-questions-high-cost-sanctuary-new-york-city/16122940/#:~:text=NEW%20YORK%20(WABC)%20%2D%2D%20More%20than%20$7,people%20the%20city%20cares%20for%20is%20decreasing%2C">Watchdog</a> group Citizens Budget Commission reports more than $7 billion of taxpayer money has been spent to house and care for undocumented immigrants in New York City.
ABC New York (WABC) <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/watchdog-questions-high-cost-sanctuary-new-york-city/16122940/#:~:text=NEW%20YORK%20(WABC)%20%2D%2D%20More%20than%20$7,people%20the%20city%20cares%20for%20is%20decreasing%2C">reports</a> the yearly budget for asylum seekers is larger than the budget for the city health department, the sanitation department, and the fire department.

Professor Gad Saad coined the term &#8220;suicidal empathy&#8221; to describe a kind of empathy so extreme it ends up harming you. 
A prime example would be the way the West has approached immigration from third-world countries. You feel bad for people. You open your borders. A plethora of people come in and harm your civilization.
But now, it seems like we are moving beyond suicidal empathy into what I would call “homicidal empathy.” That would be exemplified by your empathy for someone getting them killed.
There’s a good example in New York City with Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who promised, “We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”
That collectivist warmth is manifesting in people freezing to death on the streets of New York City. Despite all of Mamdani’s photo ops showing him shoveling the snow (for a man who cannot bench press 135 pounds once), I don&#8217;t think the people of New York can count on his shoveling skills.
What he usually shovels is horse crap.
Mamdani has embraced a hands-off policy with regard to homelessness. This was the policy in California. It remains the policy in places like Los Angeles. This policy is empathetic toward the homeless to the point where you&#8217;re killing the homeless.
The policy argues that they should be able to live out on the streets, that it is a form of cruelty and intolerance to involuntarily commit people who are usually drug-addicted or schizophrenic, people who can&#8217;t take care of themselves. Somehow, it is more empathetic to leave them out on the streets to get scabies or to die in the cold.
This seems to be the way the left-wing brain is working in Mamdani-land, California, and other liberal areas of the country. 18 people have died in the cold snap that has hit New York City.

Brian Stettin, who served as a senior advisor to former Mayor Eric Adams in his administration, told the New York Post, “When a person is in imminent danger, there&#8217;s no debate. Whatever ideological divides we have should not have any impact on these policies during a Code Blue.”
A mumbling homeless woman who braved some Antarctic temperatures was featured on the front cover of the Post on Monday.
The Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/08/us-news/mumbling-homeless-woman-left-to-spend-night-on-nyc-sidewalk/">reported</a>:
<blockquote>The unidentified woman was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, slippers and two blankets as she clipped her nails, put lotion on her hands and talked to herself while hunkered down on East 34th Street across from NYU Langone Hospital as temperatures neared 0 degrees early Sunday. She refused repeated offers for help from EMS workers and cops — who explained to The Post they had to leave the shivering vagrant in the extremely dangerous bone-chilling weather because she could answer basic questions — a factor that helps meet the threshold of Dem Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s controversial homeless policies.</blockquote>
That’s Mamdani&#8217;s shtick: If you can answer basic questions such as “What day of the week is it?” “What is your name?”, then they will leave you out on the streets to freeze. 
Mamdani held a press conference over the weekend. “Stay warm. Stay inside if you can. And please, stay safe,” he said.
“You&#8217;ve implored the people on the streets who feel more comfortable on the streets to come inside. But what happens if they don&#8217;t at this point? &#8230;20 minutes out in the cold could lead to a fatality. So are you not using as a last resort at this point to bring them inside and volunteer, even if just a few hours doesn&#8217;t lead to a placement?” a reporter asked.
“Involuntary transport continues to be used in the same manner it was as the prior administration,” Mamdani replied. “And thus far, we have seen clinical determinations of a number of New Yorkers who have been deemed to be a danger to themselves or to others. And sometimes that designation comes from an assessment that a New Yorker is not adequately clothed, given the weather that they are living through in that moment. And that is going to continue to be part of the assessments that outreach workers are making over the course of tomorrow or the next day.”
Mamdani’s last resort policy says that you can only be forced indoors if you are deemed a danger to yourself or others. The problem, of course, is that if you are Zohran Mamdani and you have spent your entire career ripping down cops and treating people as though they&#8217;re committing a human rights violation by pushing people indoors, people might be a little hesitant to actually take responsibility for calling somebody a “danger to themselves or others.”
The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/10/us-news/mamdani-wont-budge-on-involuntary-removal-of-homeless-new-yorkers-from-streets-as-cold-deaths-reach-18/">reported</a>:
<blockquote>Down in Baltimore, Mayor Brandon Scott — whom Mamdani once praised for his crime reduction efforts — late last month called the cold a life-or-death issue and ordered the police department to take people off the streets even if they were refusing services. “That direction order came from me because we cannot allow folks to be out in this kind of weather,” Scott said.</blockquote>
The fact that this has become a matter of public controversy is totally insane.
Zoran Mamdani apparently has so much sympathy for people. I&#8217;m going to put it out there: If you are out on the streets sleeping on the sidewalk, that is not a housing problem in the middle of a cold snap. That is a crazy problem if other options are given to you. No sane and rational person, by definition, who is not a danger to themselves, is sleeping out on the street in zero-degree weather. That is not a thing that sane and rational people do unless they are Arctic explorers of some type.
This comes down to Mamdani’s bizarro world empathy that legitimately gets people killed. This sort of policy, when you apply it to crime, leads to more criminals on the streets. When you apply it to homelessness, it leads to more homeless people on the streets.
The empathy that you have for the purported victim of America&#8217;s “evil, racist, abusive” system leads to the very people you are supposedly trying to help sometimes dying.
On February 6, the New York Post reported that Mamdani was still refusing to clear homeless camps and forcibly remove people from the streets, despite a rising death toll and a fresh snap of deadly deep freeze. Instead, he implored people to come inside.
If people refuse to come inside in the middle of zero-degree weather while living on the streets, it will not be solved by you imploring them.
City Journal <a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/zohran-mamdani-homeless-deaths-cold-weather">reported</a>:
<blockquote>During last year’s campaign, Mamdani promised to end a program initiated by his predecessor, Eric Adams, that deploys clinicians, backed by police officers, to assess people’s ability to care for themselves and, if necessary, to transport them involuntarily to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. He repeatedly said that involuntary commitment was a “last resort,” preferring instead an approach that would have civilian workers “help that person navigate their housing options.” He has also disavowed dismantling homeless encampments. </blockquote>
That was a proactive move by Adams to determine whether somebody ought to be on the streets or not. And Mamdani wanted to kill that. I guess the presumption was that unless they were in the throes of some sort of crime, they should never have an engagement with law enforcement.
The message being sent to the homeless is, basically, you have a right to live on the streets. And the message being sent to public service workers, cops, and mental health professionals is that you&#8217;re going to be called on the carpet if you make the mistake of bringing somebody in.
It&#8217;s nuts, it&#8217;s bad, and it&#8217;s stupid.
It&#8217;s indicative of a deeper brain rot that has set in large parts of the Left: That empathy amounts to humoring people in their delusions, even if it’s dangerous to them.

New Yorkers struggling with mental health crises are told to call 988, the suicide-prevention hotline. But on February 6, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Medical Aid in Dying Act into law, authorizing doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to terminally ill patients. The message is stark: some lives must be saved, others may be ended.
Physician-assisted suicide (PAS), known euphemistically to advocates as Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) or “Death with Dignity,” describes a practice where patients self-administer a lethal dose of drugs under the direction of a physician. The practice is legal in thirteen states and Washington, D.C.
Before Governor Hochul penned her signature last Friday, advocates for PAS were sure to be shoving pro-suicide talking points down Governor Hochul’s throat: the PAS lobby claims that PAS is “compassionate,” promotes “autonomy” and “choice,” and offers “death with dignity” to the terminally ill.
These claims could not be further from the truth. To begin, the PAS lobby’s “Death with Dignity” moniker is dishonest. Suicide is cheaper than quality end-of-life care options like hospice, in-home care, and diligent pain management — in crude economic terms, a dead patient frees up a hospital bed, saves morphine, and cuts slack to insurance companies. When assisted suicide is the norm and hospice care is an exception, death loses dignity and gains a dangerous price tag. 
Further, PAS is anything but “compassionate.” In the Netherlands, where euthanasia is available on demand, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27833206/">senior citizens</a> “are so fearful of being killed by doctors that they carry cards saying they do not want euthanasia.” In Canada, <a href="https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/international-news/canada/maid-for-children-and-teens-canada-expands-eugenics-program/">minors may seek PAS for any reason</a> without notifying their parents. The Canadian government also offers PAS to people “<a href="https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/world-news/corruption/too-poor-to-continue-living-with-dignity-canadian-eugenics/">too poor to live with dignity</a>.”
While the United States, unlike Canada and Europe, has demonstrated a commitment to limiting PAS to terminal patients, concerns about a “slippery slope” are not unfounded — empirical and anecdotal evidence suggest PAS is already slipping into disrepair in the United States. In Colorado, 510 people were given prescriptions for <a href="https://www.liveaction.org/news/woman-struggling-anorexia-assisted-suicide">assisted suicide</a> drugs in 2024, with at least 18 approved solely due to &#8220;severe protein calorie malnutrition,&#8221; which could be caused by <a href="https://nrlc.org/nrlnewstoday/2025/10/colorado-gave-over-500-people-assisted-suicide-drugs-solely-for-eating-disorders-in-2024/">anorexia</a>, eating disorders, as well as cancer, HIV, and intestinal diseases.
As far as the “autonomy” argument goes, PAS advocates misunderstand the power of a doctor’s white coat. While patient autonomy exists as a core medical ethic to stress the importance of informed consent and non-coercion, no patient, especially a vulnerable one, is truly “autonomous” as the word connotes.
With the smoker developing lung cancer, a doctor must leverage his expertise to motivate him to quit smoking, and with the woman exhibiting symptoms of cholecystitis, a physician should tell her that her gallbladder must be removed. In every exam room, doctors have a unique professional mandate to suggest or inform lifestyle changes, surgical or medical — but suggesting and prescribing physician-assisted suicide crosses a critical red line.
Suggesting suicide is an abuse of a doctor’s oath: “I will do no harm.” To a vulnerable patient facing a devastating terminal diagnosis, a doctor’s word on suicide is suggestive and coercive.
Top to bottom, physician-assisted suicide violates patient trust and physician integrity, offends the innate dignity and equality of all human beings regardless of their physical or mental state, normalizes suicide, disincentivizes public and private investment in palliative care options, and gives rise to a slippery slope where suicide drugs may become available to the general public.
Real death with dignity is 1) embracing human life until its natural end, 2) diligent pain management in terminal patients’ final days or hours, 3) ensuring every suffering person of their inherent worth and dignity despite a terminal diagnosis, and 4) innovations in high-quality palliative care, hospice, and in-home care. 
Suicide is not the ethical or medical answer to fear, pain, or suffering at the end of life. A physician’s responsibility is to diligently address a dying patient’s fears, affirm the value of their life until its natural end, and assure the patient that their symptoms and pain will be vigilantly treated.
Physician-assisted suicide is not “death with dignity.” It is cruelty to the terminally ill, disrespect and disregard for the elderly, and convenience for financial stakeholders in the medical industry.
New York has now joined 12 states in breaking the historic commitments of the Hippocratic Oath, where doctors promise, “I will use those dietary regimens which will benefit my patients according to my greatest ability and judgment, and I will do no harm or injustice to them. I will not give a lethal drug to anyone if I am asked, nor will I advise such a plan.” Governor Hochul: suicide is not dignified.

Suspected assassin Luigi Mangione spoke out in court on Friday after a New York judge set his state trial date for June 8.
As he was being escorted out of the courtroom, Mangione raged against the state trial moving forward, as he also faces a federal trial. Mangione faces multiple state charges, including second-degree murder related to the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all state and federal charges.
&#8220;One plus one equals two. This is the same trial twice,&#8221; Mangione said, according to <a href="https://www.fox5ny.com/news/luigi-mangione-double-jeopardy-claim">Fox 5 New York</a>. &#8220;This is double jeopardy by any common sense definition.&#8221;
The suspected assassin was unexpectedly ordered back in court on Friday by Manhattan state Judge Gregory Carro. His next appearance in state court wasn&#8217;t scheduled until May. Mangione&#8217;s lawyer objected to the June 8 trial start date, arguing that the defense team would also be preparing for the federal trial at that time.
“Mr. Mangione is being put in an untenable situation,” defense lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo said, according to the Associated Press. “This is a tug-of-war between two different prosecution offices.&#8221;
&#8220;The defense will not be ready on June 8,&#8221; she added.
&#8220;Be ready,&#8221; the judge replied.
Jury selection for Mangione&#8217;s federal trial was set for September 8, with opening statements scheduled for October 13. Last week, the judge overseeing Mangione&#8217;s federal trial <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-judge-says-prosecutors-cant-pursue-death-penalty-against-luigi-mangione?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Federal+Judge+Says+Prosecutors+Can%E2%80%99t+Pursue+Death+Penalty+Against+Luigi+Mangione">dropped</a> the murder charge that carried a potential death penalty.
In a surprising twist to the federal trial, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett agreed with Mangione’s defense team and said that stalking does not constitute “a crime of violence.” The judge acknowledged that her decision was “strange,” but argued that violence is defined by using force, and stalking could technically be committed without using force, ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/luigi-mangione-latest-judge-rule-death-penalty-stays/story?id=129677290">reported</a>.
Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Joel Seidemann argued for Mangione&#8217;s state trial to begin before the federal trial, saying that the state’s interests &#8220;would be unfairly prejudiced by an unnecessary delay.&#8221; Seidemann also told the judge that Thompson&#8217;s family wants the state trial to proceed first, which would also help prosecutors avoid a double jeopardy challenge. New York state law could prevent Mangione from being tried at the state level if his federal trial comes first.
Judge Carro said on Friday, &#8220;It appears the federal government has reneged on its agreement to let the state, which has done most of the work in this case, go first.&#8221;
In May, Carro will decide whether prosecutors can use evidence seized from Mangione when he was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Investigators say that Mangione was found with a 9 mm handgun that connects him to the crime scene and a notebook, where Mangione allegedly discusses taking out Thompson.
U.S. District Judge Garnett ruled last week that federal prosecutors can use the items found on Mangione when he was arrested as evidence.
