The death toll continues to rise after a catastrophic flood swept through the Nepal-China border, with over 350 people dead and over 1,300 people missing, including at least 60 Americans. 
Officials in Nepal are worried that the situation could escalate even further with the possibility of a second flood. The director of the Center for Disaster Studies at Tribhuvan University in Nepal, Basanta Raj Adhikari, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c6y8mjmnpxv0t">said</a> “second and third waves” were possible but added, “We don’t know yet.” The flood’s sudden onset is part of what led to the high death toll. Water and debris can travel dozens of miles within hours, leaving the people in its path little to no chance to evacuate before it arrives.
That same unpredictability is now complicating the search itself. The potential for more floods threatens rescue crews working the disaster zone. On the ground, Nepal has mobilized nearly <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c6y8mjmnpxv0t">10,000</a> security personnel, pulling from the police, army, and armed police force for rescue operations. Search efforts continue to face a lack of resources as well. 
The death toll is expected to climb even higher. The flood swept the region, snapping bridges, toppling buildings, and leaving people stranded in its wake. The President of the Nepal Center for Disaster Management said the flood came like a “tsunami from the sky” before adding, “Everything on the way was completely washed out.” 
Countries are lining up to offer help amid the catastrophe, with over 700 foreigners — including at least 60 Americans — missing. Nepal, known for tourist attractions like Mount Everest, the Himalayas, and trekking trails, is in its peak tourism season. September through November is the best time for clear skies and mild temperatures, allowing climbers to have clear mountain views and moderate temperatures as they climb. 
Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dozens-of-americans-among-missing-after-deadly-flash-flood-in-nepal">said</a> the State Department “stands ready to support the Government of Nepal” and offered $500,000 in emergency assistance to the region. Chinese President Xi Jinping also offered help and called for an extensive search, with over 250 reported missing on the Chinese side of the border. India also has a large proportion of citizens missing and has sent over 100,000 pounds of aid, including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, lamps, and water bottles. The United Nations has also reportedly sent emergency supplies to assist with the response.

More than 50 Americans are among the missing after deadly flash floods swept through several areas along the border between Nepal and China.
The flood was <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/26/world-news/flood-hits-china-nepal-border-leaving-many-dead-and-missing/">reportedly triggered</a> when a wall of rock and mud collapsed into a river near the border between Nepal and China-controlled Tibet. Police in Nepal have already reported at least 157 dead on the Himalayan side — according to a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-nepal-flash-floods-7262dac22e31258955efa5c28c8fe917">report</a> from the Associated Press — and over 300 are still missing, including 54 American tourists.
Nepal’s foreign minister Shisir Khanal said on Wednesday that the landslide and subsequent flooding had been triggered by an earthquake — one the United States Geological Survey had identified in the region around the time the flooding began — but the USGS later confirmed that the rock wall collapsing had actually been what instruments had recorded as a 5.2 magnitude earthquake.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an extensive search to find the 265 people that state media has confirmed are still missing.
So far, more than 391 foreign nationals have been reported missing since the flooding began — the majority of them tourists. According to Nepal&#8217;s tourism board, 54 hail from the United States; 142 are from India on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet; 34 are from Australia; 33 traveled from the United Kingdom; and 24 are Canadian.
The U.S. Embassy has instructed all remaining American tourists in the region to seek out higher ground and listen for alerts and instructions from local officials: &#8220;We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.&#8221;
Flash floods in Trishuli Bazar, in Nepal’s Nuwakot district, destroyed dozens of homes and left more either partially or fully submerged beneath the mud and debris.

For most people, hearing the name “Mount Everest” brings to mind images of a pristine snow capped peak, perhaps with a brave climber standing atop it with an arm raised in triumph. After all, this person must have reached the pinnacle of human achievement by ascending the world’s highest mountain.
Does it get any better than that?
This idyllic view of Everest is slowly being erased, however, as stories about the mountain’s harsh realities make the rounds on social media. It’s already widely understood that not everyone who tries to make it to the top of the world makes it back down. But that’s only the beginning of the drama.
Located between Nepal and Tibet, Mount Everest is the world&#8217;s tallest peak. This majestic mountain sits at 29,029 feet above sea level. Oxygen is so thin at the top that it&#8217;s called the &#8220;death zone.&#8221; This is where even the most experienced climbers succumb to their bodies breaking down and for some, that means extreme sickness or even death.
Since the 1900s, more than 300 people have died trying to scale the icy terrain of Everest. Per an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dead-bodies-on-mount-everest-are-hard-to-get-down-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Insider</a> report, 2023 is shaping up to be a particularly deadly year, with 12 climbers pronounced dead already and 5 still missing. Two factors contributing to these high rates of fatality are altitude sickness and overcrowding on the mountain.

Despite its risks, climbing Mount Everest has become more popular than ever — blame it on social media, boredom, or just people inherently wanting to one-up each other. No matter the reason, the increased interest in scaling the world’s highest peak is now so extreme that new guidelines were instituted for this year.
These <a href="https://www.mountainiq.com/new-climbing-regulations-mount-everest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rules</a> include stipulations prohibiting solo climbers (everyone must have a trained sherpa). All climbers must have successfully climbed a peak at least 7,000 feet high previously. People over 75, double amputees, and blind persons are all prohibited from climbing.
It’s all part of an effort to stop overcrowding. Filmmaker and director Jennifer Peedom told Insider, &#8220;It is extremely overcrowded now and just getting more and more every year.&#8221;
The publication noted that Nepal issued a record 463 permits to people who want to climb Mount Everest during the 2023 season, meaning about 900 people will jostle to reach the summit this year alone. Things get dicey in May when wind dies down and temperatures warm. This is when there’s a literal line up the mountain, with climbers pushing their way to the top. 
Many people are aware of the fact that Everest is littered with dead bodies because it’s too costly and dangerous to remove them. But what fewer observers realize is that the mountain is also littered with … trash. And there’s a lot of it.
A video of the garbage-strewn base camp went viral on Instagram in mid-May, just ahead of the 70th anniversary of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay&#8217;s ascending Everest for the first time on May 29, 1953. The duo is believed to be the first to reach the mountain’s peak.

The post came from mountain guide Tenzi Sherpa, who has been guiding climbers to the summit since 2019. &#8220;The dirtiest camp I have ever seen,&#8221; he wrote in the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CsWVaL8pyms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">caption</a>.
&#8220;I think the government should make strict rules for those who leave trash [on Mount Everest], and a more effective cleaning campaign project should be held,&#8221; the guide told <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/mount-everest-garbage-pollution-mountain-guide-climbers-viral-video-1803916" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newsweek</a> about his video post.
As concerning as the trash piles are among the white snow, the sherpa’s video isn’t even the strangest story to come from Everest this season. That title belongs to the tale of a guide who allegedly saved a dying climber’s life only to have the man supposedly block him later on social media.
The story goes that Malaysian climber Ravichandran, who goes by the name Ravichandran Everest or Ravi, was attempting to scale Everest when he succumbed to altitude sickness and collapsed not far from the summit. Video footage shows Gelje Sherpa, who had been climbing with a different client when he came upon the body, wrapping a mattress around the man and strapping the climber onto his back. He abandoned his own client’s summit push to hike the man down to safety.

Gelje shared on Instagram on May 20: &#8220;You may all be wondering where is the summit photo? Unfortunately no summit yet. At the Balcony during our summit push around 8,300m I saw someone in danger.” 
&#8220;A man who needed rescuing and no one else was helping. I made the decision to cancel our clients summit push so that I could bring him down to safety before he died up there alone. I carried him myself all the way down to Camp 4 where a rescue team helped from then on. I will be back up the mountain soon after regaining energy from a huge task but I am so happy to say he is alive and recovering in hospital.&#8221;
But just after this incredible story came to light, Ravi allegedly blocked Gelje on social media and refused to acknowledge his assistance. He posted about the incident several days later after getting a lot of negative attention on social media. 
&#8220;Sherpas are people who are so committed and dedicated to their clients especially coming from &#8217;14 Peaks Expedition Co. &amp; The Seven Summit Expedition Co. They never leave you behind. I experienced it this year. When descending from [the] summit, I had difficulty. Tashi heard that I [was] in trouble, he organised the rescue team (Mingma Tendi, Gelje Sherpa, Nima Dorchi, Nima Tashi, Dawa Sherpa and Dipen Bhote). They are high altitude sherpas who make lots of sacrifices for their clients. They brought me to 7300 meter[s] for Heli Pick-up for a quick Heli flight to Hospital. Sherpas are important in my 8000 meter expeditions,” he wrote.
Gelje Sherpa responded by saying in the comments, &#8220;Thank you [clasped hands emoji] hope you are recovering well.&#8221; 
Daring rescues aside, there’s no denying that climbing Mount Everest has changed a lot in the past seven decades since it began. Anyone seeking to reach the top of the world today should first know what they’re in for.
&#8220;There&#8217;s sort of this idea that there&#8217;s only one mountain that really matters in the kind of Western, popular imagination,&#8221; Peedom told Business Insider. She’s climbed the mountain four times, but said the modern experience is nothing compared to what it used to be. 
&#8220;There seems to be a disaster mystique around Everest that seems to only serve to heighten the allure of the place,&#8221; she <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dead-bodies-on-mount-everest-are-hard-to-get-down-2019-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the publication. &#8220;It is extremely overcrowded now and just getting more and more every year.&#8221;

Two Americans and two lawful U.S. permanent residents were among those who perished Sunday in an airplane crash in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nepal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nepal</a>, the U.S. State Department <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/nepal-plane-crash-2-americans-2-lawful-permanent-residents-killed-himalayas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Wednesday, according to Fox News.
Yeti Airlines flight 691 was traveling from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, to Pokhara, a city in the central part of the country where the crash occurred. The cause of the crash is still unclear, according to the nation’s aviation authorities. 
&#8220;Our thoughts are with the families of those on board,&#8221; Ned Price, State Department spokesman, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/nepal-plane-crash-2-americans-2-lawful-permanent-residents-killed-himalayas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;The United States stands ready to support Nepal in any way we can at this difficult hour.&#8221;
The ATR 72-500 aircraft carried 72 people, and all were killed when the plane went <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nepal-france-kathmandu-accidents-8d09c2360dddcf135136f008b4cf303e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">down</a> in a 1,000-foot-deep gorge. Pokhara Airport, the flight’s intended destination, opened earlier this month. The crash was the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/at-least-68-dead-in-plane-crash-moments-before-disaster-captured-on-video" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second</a> in the past year for the Himalayan country.
Nepal observed a national day of mourning on Monday, the same day the black box and cockpit voice recorders were retrieved from the wreckage. The contents of those devices will help investigators determine what caused the country’s deadliest airplane crash in 30 years. Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nepal-france-kathmandu-accidents-8d09c2360dddcf135136f008b4cf303e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> that the cockpit recording would be analyzed locally, but the black box will be sent to France for analysis.
A graphic video from the flight emerged of a passenger reportedly live-streaming the events on Facebook. The video showed the moment something went wrong with the aircraft and ended with flames and smoke taking over the frame. Another <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugbrNP9Q5Io" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> shows the outside view of the turboprop regional airliner flying low and appearing to lose control just moments before the disaster.

The co-pilot of the flight, Anju Khatiwada, spent years in the United States training. She was reportedly inspired to become a pilot by her husband, who was also a pilot. He died in a plane crash minutes before landing in 2006 flying for the same airline. Khatiwada’s colleagues describe her as a talented aviator, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/accidents-nepal-02c418467d273a3f43ef0d1b16df760f" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>.
&#8220;Her husband, Dipak Pokhrel, died in 2006 in a crash of a Twin Otter plane of Yeti Airlines in Jumla,&#8221; a Yeti airline spokesman <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/pilot-couple-killed-air-crashes-nepal-16-years-apart-2023-01-16/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Reuters. &#8220;She got her pilot training with the money she got from the insurance after her husband&#8217;s death.&#8221;
All Nepalese airlines have been banned from operating within the European Union since 2013 for lack of safety standards. Nepal has a history of airplane crashes, with 42 fatal ones since 1946, according to the AP. The topography of Nepal is one potential reason, with eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/15/world/asia/plane-crash-nepal.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">along</a> with rapid weather changes and aging aircraft.

A disturbing video emerged from inside a passenger plane that crashed overseas, killing at least 68 of the 72 people on board.
The Yeti Airlines flight crashed on Sunday near the city of Pokhara in central <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nepal">Nepal</a>.
TMZ said the crash occurred after the plane had only been in the air for approximately 27 minutes.
The report identified a video that was being recorded by a passenger moments before the flight took a turn for the worse.
The video allegedly shows the moment that something went wrong on the flight, leading to panic throughout the aircraft.
The plane then crashed into the ground and immediately erupted into flames. The video, which was being live-streamed to Facebook, continued recording for a short period of time.

“By the time I was there the crash site was already crowded,” a resident told <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-64280480" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC News</a>. “There was huge smoke coming from the flames of the plane. And then helicopters came over in no time. The pilot tried his best to not hit civilization or any home. There was a small space right beside the Seti River and the flight hit the ground in that small space,” she added.
The ATR 72-500 aircraft carried 72 people, including four crew members, 53 Nepalese, five Indians, four Russias, two South Koreans, one French passenger, one person from Ireland, one Argentinian, and an Australian.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/hello_CAANepal/status/1614598346626461696/photo/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> that two helicopters were immediately dispatched upon receiving information of a crash for search and rescue. Included in search and rescue teams were the Nepal Army, police, and the Himalayan Rescue Association. At the time of the press release, 68 bodies had been found. One witness reportedly heard cries for help from the wreckage, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nepal-29707b4de6d31429076b020d8470b284" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Associated Press.
“The flames were so hot that we couldn’t go near the wreckage. I heard a man crying for help, but because of the flames and smoke we couldn’t help him,” the witness said.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/hello_CAANepal/status/1614598346626461696/photo/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> that two helicopters were immediately dispatched upon receiving information of a crash for search and rescue. Included in search and rescue teams were the Nepal Army, police, and the Himalayan Rescue Association. At the time of the press release, 68 bodies had been found. One witness reportedly heard cries for help from the wreckage, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nepal-29707b4de6d31429076b020d8470b284" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Associated Press. 
“The flames were so hot that we couldn’t go near the wreckage. I heard a man crying for help, but because of the flames and smoke we couldn’t help him,” the witness said.
Pokhara Airport, the flight&#8217;s intended destination, opened just 14 days ago. The crash was the second in the past year for the Himalayan country. A plane carrying 22 passengers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/plane-wreckage-and-21-bodies-found-one-person-still-missing-after-crash">hit a Himalayan mountainside in May</a>, killing all on board. 
“I am speechless about the crash,” Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/01/15/yeti-airlines-nepal-plane-crash-pokhara-airport/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement on Twitter. “I convey my heartfelt condolences to the passengers and the crew members who lost their lives and express my deep sympathy for the family members for their losses.”
All Nepalese airlines have been banned from operating within the European Union since 2013 for lack of safety standards. Nepal has a history of airplane crashes, with 42 fatal ones since 1946, according to the AP. The topography of Nepal is one potential reason, with eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/15/world/asia/plane-crash-nepal.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">along</a> with rapid weather changes and aging aircraft.

At Least 68 Dead In Plane Crash, Moments Before Disaster Captured On Video

When we think of serial killers, we think of Ted Bundy, or Jeffrey Dahmer, or John Wayne Gacy — all Americans. 
Rarely do we think about serial killers who operated in other countries, like Charles Sobhraj.
He was convicted of killing 12 people, but is suspected of killing as many as 30 across multiple countries. He may not be as prolific as Bundy or Dahmer, but he is every bit as terrifying.
Sobhraj was born in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, in 1944. His father reportedly denied his paternity, and Sobhraj was raised by his mother and her new husband, though Sobhraj felt neglected once the couple had additional children. Sobhraj began committing crimes as a teenager, receiving a sentence for burglary in 1963. While in prison, he manipulated the guards into giving him special privileges, including keeping books in his cell.
He continued to commit burglaries and scams once he was released, as well as stealing cars and using fake documents to travel through Europe with his pregnant fiancé, Chantal Compagnon. The coupled robbed tourists after befriending them. Sobhraj had begun amassing wealth through his crimes but developed a gambling addiction.
Sobhraj was arrested in India in 1973 after a failed robbery attempt, but escaped from prison with the help of Compagnon. He was quickly apprehended, but the couple posted bail and fled to Kabul, where they once again began robbing tourists. The couple was arrested again but, yet again, Sobhraj escaped, this time fleeing to Iran. Compagnon returned to France in an attempt to forget her criminal past.
Sobhraj spent the next two years on the run, traveling through Eastern Europe and the Middle East, and, along with his younger half-brother, committing crimes in Turkey and Greece and eventually being arrested in Athens. Sobhraj once again escaped, but his younger brother was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
While on the run, Sobhraj ran scams to make money, such as helping two former French policemen recover passports that Sobhraj had stolen himself.
Sobhraj reportedly committed his first known murder in 1975 with the help of an accomplice, Ajay Chowdhury, who was known as the serial killer’s second-in-command. The first victims reportedly recruited the pair to help them commit crimes, but later threatened to expose Sobhraj for his crimes, leading him to kill them. The first known victim was Teresa Knowlton, a young woman from Seattle, Washington, who had been drowned in a tidal pool in the Gulf of Thailand. Her death was originally believed to be an accident, but months later, her post-mortem and other evidence showed she had been intentionally drowned.
Next, Sobhraj and Chowdhury killed a young Turkish Sephardic Jew named Vitali Hakim, whom they burned. They then killed Dutch student Henk Bintanja and his fiancée Cocky Hemker, who were both poisoned, strangled, and burned in Thailand.
During this time, Sobhraj built up a cult following, and, joined by his most devoted follower, Marie-Andree Leclerc, entered Nepal using the Dutch student’s passports. There they murdered American Connie Jo Bronzich and her Canadian friend Laurent Carriere.
Next, Sobhraj traveled to Calcutta and murdered Israeli scholar Avoni Jacob. Sobhraj then used Jacob’s passport to travel with Leclerc and Chowdhury to Singapore, then India, and on to Bangkok.
During this time, police were closing in on the group, and Dutch authorities were closing in on those who killed Bintanja and Hemker. Investigators searched Sobhraj’s apartment a month after he left the country, and found the victims’ passports, poisons, and syringes.
In 1976, Interpol issued an arrest warrant for Sobhraj for the four murders committed in Thailand – Knowlton, Hakim, Bintaja, and Hemker.
Even with the arrest warrant, Sobhraj and his crew continued to travel and kill. He and new followers killed Frenchman Jean-Luc Solomon in Bombay. They then poisoned a tour group of French post-graduate students in New Delhi. Three of the poisoned students figured out what was happening and took down Sobhraj. He was detained by police and spent the next 20 years in an Indian prison. During his imprisonment in India, he escaped briefly after drugging several prison guards, later claiming he did so to extend his sentence and avoid extradition to Thailand, where he was wanted for additional murders.
On February 17, 1997, Sobhraj, now 52, was released and allowed to return to France, since the warrants and evidence against him for his other crimes had been lost.
In France, Sobhraj raked in the cash by selling the rights to his life for a film and charging for interviews and photographs. In 2003, he returned to Nepal, where he was still wanted for multiple murders. A journalist saw him at a casino and wrote an article about him, which was seen by police, who raided the casino and arrested Sobhraj.
On August 20, 2004, Sobhraj was sentenced to life in prison for the 1975 murder of Bronzich. Sobhraj appealed the decision and lost, and on September 18, 2014, he was convicted of murdering Bronzich’s friend, Carriere. He was sentenced to another 20 years in prison.
By 2018, Sobhraj was in failing health and had received multiple open-heart surgeries.
A court ruling on December 21, 2022, ordered Sobhraj to be returned to France within 15 days, following a petition from his legal team arguing he should be released due to good behavior and his advanced age. The concession was granted thanks to a Nepalese law that allows inmates who have served at least 75% of their sentence with good behavior to be released.
“Keeping him in the prison continuously is not in line with the prisoner’s human rights,” the ruling said, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-64050714" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the BBC</a>.
On December 23, 2022, Charles Sobhraj walked out of prison and was deported to France. He is not allowed to return to Nepal for at least 10 years.

The body of the one of the most famous female ski mountaineers in the world was found on Wednesday after she had disappeared falling into a crevasse on Manaslu in Nepal, the world’s eighth-highest mountain.
U.S. ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson, 49, the mother of two teenage sons, was the first woman to summit Mount Everest and the adjacent Lhotse peak within 24 hours. In 2018, she was named the National Geographic adventurer of the year after she summited and skied down <a href="https://roammedia.com/climbing-papsura/">Papsura, aka the “Peak of Evil”</a> in India, and Denali in Alaska.
“I haven&#8217;t felt as sure-footed on Manaslu as I have on past adventure into the thin atmosphere of the high Himalaya,” Nelson <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11257601/Body-missing-US-ski-mountaineer-Nepal.html">wrote</a> last Thursday, adding, “These past weeks have tested my resilience in new ways.”
Nelson’s boyfriend, Jim Morrison, who had tragically lost his own wife and two daughters in a plane accident in 2011, and who contemplated suicide before he fell in love with Nelson in 2013, led the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-63059776?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&amp;at_custom3=%40BBCWorld&amp;at_medium=custom7&amp;at_campaign=64&amp;at_custom4=0BF74E30-3F0F-11ED-B0EC-F1D14744363C&amp;at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D&amp;at_custom2=twitter">search for her body</a> along with three Sherpa guides in a helicopter search organized by Shangri-La Nepal Trek.
“The search team that left this morning on a helicopter spotted her body,” Jiban Ghimire, managing director of  Shangri-La Nepal Trek told AFP. He told <a href="https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/everest/hilaree-nelson-missing-manaslu-deadly-avalance/">Outside</a> magazine, “The duo reached the true summit of Manaslu at 11.30 A.M. local time. And about 15 minutes later I got a call from our staff at Base Camp that her ski blade skidded off and [she] fell off the other side of the peak.”

&#8220;We all go to the mountains because there is some innate part of being human that seeks challenge and there is endless challenge to be found in our wild places. I’ve always seen mountains as a blank canvas that lets me be an artist by choosing my unique path when amongst them. It’s freedom in its purest and most simple form,&#8221; she wrote.
&#8220;But, like many things in life, what you originally set out to do isn’t always where you end up. It’s the unexpected adventures along the way that create the true magic. There’s so much more to this passion than just the climb or the ski, there are the human connections created along this journey that have been some of the deepest and most profound friendships of my life. There is also tragedy. The mountains are both majestic and fierce. They give so much and they take so much,&#8221; she added.
Nelson, who is survived by her 15 and 13-year-old sons, who were staying with her ex-husband in Colorado while she was traveling, told <a href="https://www.si.com/sports-illustrated/2020/02/06/lhotse-skiing-jim-morrison-hilaree-ne">Sports Illustrated</a> in 2020, “I tell myself a lot that the risks I take and the places I go are eventually good for my kids, and that they’re learning about their mom as an individual, too, as a person seeing that I have a passion and I’m in tune with that in living a life.”
