Attorney General Pam Bondi tore into Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) during a Tuesday morning hearing, squaring off with the Illinois lawmaker over President Donald Trump&#8217;s plan to send National Guard troops into the city of Chicago to protect federal employees and property.
Durbin raised the question, noting that members of the Texas National Guard had been tapped to deploy to Chicago, and suggested that it wasn&#8217;t necessary despite dangerous clashes between protesters and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
&#8220;The word is, and I think it&#8217;s been confirmed by the White House, they&#8217;re going to transfer Texas National Guard units to the state of Illinois,&#8221; Durbin prompted. &#8220;What&#8217;s the rationale for that?&#8221;

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reminded CNN&#8217;s Kaitlan Collins that, as a reporter, it was her job to get to the bottom of things rather than to simply accept whatever party line came from the people in power.
While addressing the ongoing situation in Portland, Oregon — where Antifa rioters have squared off against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers while local police stand down and independent journalists get caught in the crossfire — Collins suggested that President Donald Trump&#8217;s plan to send in the National Guard was unnecessary.

As President Donald Trump deploys the National Guard to crime-ridden cities like Memphis and Portland, Republican lawmakers across the country say they would like the president to send troops into their cities next.
Two cities that could be the next targets for Trump’s crime crackdown are the notoriously violent Midwest cities of St. Louis and Chicago. These Democrat-controlled cities have been crippled by crime for decades and have been ground zero for the implementation of soft-on-crime policies from leftist prosecutors.
“It is dystopian. You can&#8217;t even believe you&#8217;re in an American city in some parts of it. You cannot even believe it,” Missouri state Rep. Justin Sparks told The Daily Wire of St. Louis. “Like the streets are crumbling. The infrastructure is crumbling. Electricity, trash, piles of trash in alleys, like animals running freely.”
St. Louis consistently <a href="https://usafacts.org/articles/which-cities-have-the-highest-murder-rates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ranks</a> as one of the worst cities in America for murders, and prosecution in the blue city was recently led by leftist Kim Gardner, who was bankrolled by George Soros. Gardner resigned in 2023 amid pressure from Republicans.
Still, state lawmakers tell The Daily Wire that the city has a massive crime problem.
“You cannot take your families to a ballgame or to a sporting event … because the drug problem is so bad and they don’t do anything about it,” Republican Rep. Holly Jones told The Daily Wire.
Republican State Senator Nick Schroer said that Trump should work with Governor Mike Kehoe to clean up the city.
“If Trump is able to work with the Kehoe administration and get some troops in there to kind of clean it up, we could expedite this thing and be on the right course within two to three years,” he said.
Schroer said that a recently passed <a href="https://house.mo.gov/Bill.aspx?bill=HB495&amp;year=2025&amp;code=R" target="_blank" rel="noopener">crime bill</a>, which shifts control of police out of the hands of Democratic officials in cities like St. Louis and Kansas City, should help address the problem, but that more aid from the Trump administration would be welcome.
The lawmakers said the best way to fight crime was to surge law enforcement, including federal troops, to crime-ridden cities.
“That’s what will work at every urban decaying hellhole in our country, flood the zone, and take the bad guys and actually charge them with crimes and hold them down,” Sparks said.

On Sunday, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) stated that Trump was about to deploy 400 National Guard troops to Chicago. Pritzker, who has long downplayed the Windy City’s crime problem, claimed the mobilization would be an “invasion.”
Prior to Pritzker’s latest lament, Illinois state lawmakers told The Daily Wire that they would support Trump sending the National Guard to Chicago.
“I think it would restore order. I think just the threat of the National Guard has the radical left scared and they&#8217;re probably going to let the police do a little bit better of a job,” Republican Rep. Adam Niemerg said.
Rep. Chris Miller, the husband of Congresswoman Mary Miller, said he would “absolutely” support the National Guard being sent into Chicago.
“When I look at what’s going on with JB Pritzker and [Chicago Mayor] Brandon Johnson, they are missing a golden opportunity to be heroes in the state of Illinois. If they would cooperate with ICE, if they would cooperate with President Trump, Illinois could begin to enjoy the Golden Age of America that everybody else is enjoying, that are embracing the policies and what Trump’s trying to do.”
Miller said that Pritzker needed an “ICR” — inner-cranial rectal removal — saying that the governor and Johnson needed “to get their head out of their ass.”
The Illinois Republican said that they should look at the template of Trump’s Washington, D.C., crime crackdown and get Chicago under control in a couple of weeks.

United States District Judge Karin J. Immergut on Sunday expanded her ruling from the day before, blocking the Trump administration from deploying hundreds of California National Guard troops to Oregon.
Immergut called “an emergency hearing Sunday, then broadened her restraining order to cover ‘the relocation, federalization or deployment of members of the National Guard of any state or the District of Columbia in the state of Oregon,’” The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/05/us/trump-national-guard-california-oregon-newsom.html">reported</a>. Meanwhile, the Trump administration still plans to send Texas National Guard troops to Chicago to restore order amid a series of anti-ICE <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-arrests-two-after-attack-on-border-patrol-in-chicago?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=FBI+Arrests+Two+After+Attack+On+Border+Patrol+In+Chicago">attacks</a>.
On Saturday, Immergut <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ord.189270/gov.uscourts.ord.189270.56.0_1.pdf">granted</a> the State of Oregon and the City of Portland’s motion for a temporary restraining order blocking President Donald Trump from federalizing the National Guard and sending them to Portland.
On Sunday, Immergut stated that “the relocation, federalization or deployment of members of the National Guard of any state,” implied that she wants to forbid Trump from sending out-of-state National Guard troops to Oregon to protect federal agents or property.

She is saying the Federal government has no jurisdiction to protect Federal property. The last time someone tried to argue this was Fort Sumter,” referring to the beginning of the Civil War, when the Confederacy argued that the U.S. federal government had no right to maintain or protect Fort Sumter because South Carolina had lawfully seceded from the Union, and therefore, Fort Sumter (located in Charleston Harbor) now belonged to South Carolina, and by extension, the Confederacy.

Additionally, there is precedent for the National Guard from one state being deployed to a jurisdiction outside its state. For instance, during the civil rights era riots in 1968, National Guard units from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland were <a href="https://www.nga.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/1968NGAAnnualMeeting.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com">sent</a> to Washington, D.C.
On September 27, 2025, President Trump posted a message on his Truth Social account stating that he was directing Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of War, to provide troops to protect “War ravaged Portland” from “Antifa, and other domestic terrorists” and authorizing “Full Force, if necessary.” On September 28, Hegseth issued a memorandum authorizing the deployment and federalization of 200 of Oregon National Guard service members, over the objection of Oregon’s Democratic governor, Tina Kotek.
Immergut noted in her decision that three reasons could be adduced to support a president “activating” the National Guard to serve on a mission, adding that the reason in Trump’s case could be derived from Title 10 of the United States Code, where the Guard is considered federal military and under the command of the U.S. President.
“Members of the National Guard generally do not receive training to perform local law enforcement tasks, such as learning de-escalation techniques, the use of non-lethal force, or how to properly conduct criminal investigations,” Immergut opined.
After delineating numerous instances of agitation, including protestors lighting fires to barricade a vehicle gate at an ICE facility, rocks and M80 fireworks hurled at Federal Protective Services officers, an assault of a federal officer with a machete and knife, the shining of high-powered flashlights in the eyes of drivers leaving the ICE facility, as well as ICE employees being “doxed” and having their personal information posted online, Immergut defended the plaintiffs instead, writing they “have adequately shown irreparable harm and that the balance of equities and public interest weigh in their favor” from the National Guard being federalized.
“Here, this Court concludes that the President did not have a ‘colorable basis’ to invoke § 12406(3) to federalize the National Guard because the situation on the ground belied an inability of federal law enforcement officers to execute federal law. The President’s determination was simply untethered to the facts,” she wrote.
“Defendants also argue that the September 28, 2025 federalization order is authorized under subsection two, which permits federalization of the National Guard in response to ‘a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States,’” Immergut stated. “First, a rebellion must not only be violent but also be armed. Second, a rebellion must be organized. Third, a rebellion must be open and avowed. Fourth, a rebellion must be against the government as a whole — often with an aim of overthrowing the government — rather than in opposition to a single law or issue.”
“The President also stated that ‘protests or acts of violence [that] directly inhibit execution of the laws constitute a form of rebellion. These conceptions of rebellion improperly conflate the statutory preconditions,” she contended. She also argued that sending in the National Guard would inflame the situation, asserting, “state and local law enforcement will need to expend additional resources to quell increased civil unrest that is likely to result from the Guard’s mobilization.”
“The issues at stake in this case are important, and the consequences of this Court’s decision are far-reaching. As soon as the federalized National Guard deploys to Portland, the state of Oregon will suffer an injury to its sovereignty,” Immergut argued.
“This is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law. Defendants have made a range of arguments that, if accepted, risk blurring the line between civil and military federal power — to the detriment of this nation,” she concluded.

President Donald Trump’s latest move to confront rising lawlessness and attacks on federal immigration agents in Chicago is the deployment of 300 Illinois National Guard troops, prompting Democrat Governor JB Pritzker to hyperventilate over “Trump’s Invasion.”
“We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion,” Pritzker stated, according to the <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/10/05/president-trump-calling-up-300-illinois-national-guard-immediately-to-protect-ice-buildings-for-60-days/?lctg=B4845491D5F64499A4E4B513EB&amp;utm_email=B4845491D5F64499A4E4B513EB&amp;utm_source=listrak&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=https%3a%2f%2fwww.chicagotribune.com%2f2025%2f10%2f05%2fpresident-trump-calling-up-300-illinois-national-guard-immediately-to-protect-ice-buildings-for-60-days%2f&amp;utm_campaign=trib-chicago_tribune-breaking_news-nl&amp;utm_content=alert">Chicago Tribune</a>, which reported that War Secretary Pete Hegseth sent a memo instructing Illinois National Guard leadership to deploy the troops to the Chicago region for at least 60 days. “It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops,” Pritzker declared.
The White House has stated that the National Guard troops will protect federal personnel and property—like ICE facilities—where violent demonstrations are either happening or expected. The memo calls for protecting federal law enforcement officials who are “performing Federal functions.”
Meanwhile, the Texas Guard is preparing to deploy hundreds more National Guard troops to Illinois.
Trump has been blunt about the situation in the Chicago area, saying, “Everybody knows Chicago is a hellhole right now.” The city is drowning in violent crime, and federal ICE agents have been under attack. In September, rioters surrounded ICE vehicles in Broadview, Illinois, threw tear gas, and even slashed tires in a protest against ICE. The Trump administration rolled out “Operation Midway Blitz,” which scooped up hundreds of illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds—gang members, murderers, and sex offenders.

Pritzker said over the weekend that he would refuse to deploy the state’s National Guard, stating that a federal deployment would be illegal, and has threatened to file a lawsuit to stop it, citing the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878.
Trump’s justification to federalize the National Guard comes from the U.S. Code, specifically 10 U.S.C. § 12406, which states:” “Whenever (1) the United States, or any of the Commonwealths or possessions, is invaded or is in danger of invasion by a foreign nation; (2) there is a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States; or (3) the President is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States; then the President may call into Federal service members and units of the National Guard of any State in such numbers as he considers necessary to repel the invasion, suppress the rebellion, or execute those laws.”
On Sunday, Trump said, “I believe the politicians are under threat, because there’s no way somebody can say that things are wonderful in Chicago. There’s no city in the world like that. We’re going to straighten it out. And I think that Pritzker, he’s not a stupid person. I think that Pritzker is afraid for his life,” hinting that Pritzker was beholden to organizations the Trump administration believes support the protests over increased immigration enforcement.
In Oregon, a federal judge blocked President Trump’s effort to deploy California National Guard troops to Portland after previously issuing a restraining order halting the Oregon Guard deployment. Trump fired back, calling the judge “shameful” and insisting that cities like Portland and Chicago are “burning” and in desperate need of federal assistance.

Topline: Tragedy rocked a small town in Michigan after a man targeted a Mormon church on Sunday, opening fire on the congregants and leaving the building ablaze.
The horrific attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc left the church completely engulfed in flames. Grand Blanc is a small community of about 8,000 people and a suburb of Flint, about 50 miles from Detroit.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. ET, while the church was in service. Hundreds of people were worshiping when the gunman rammed his truck into the building. He then opened fire on congregants, shooting at least 10 people. At some point, the church was set on fire; officials believe the fire was intentionally set by the suspect, perhaps using an accelerant such as gasoline.

According to police, the gunman was killed in a shootout with authorities. At least four people have been confirmed killed, not including the gunman, and multiple others were wounded. Officials have stated that they fear the casualty count will rise due to the fire.
The gunman: The shooter was a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan, just a few miles from the church, according to police.

President Trump is clearly feeling emboldened to expand his efforts after the successful operation in DC. Now, he is looking for similar results in Portland, Oregon, a city ravaged by crime and violent political riots over the last five years.
Writing on Truth Social on Saturday, the president announced: “At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland … I am authorizing Full Force, if necessary.” 
Why Portland? Trump says the city is the epicenter of activity for &#8220;Antifa,&#8221; the far-left political movement that has been linked to riots and violent demonstrations for years now.
Militants have repeatedly laid siege to ICE processing facilities in the city, attacking agents with rocks, fireworks, and smoke grenades, blocking entrances, setting fires, and even doxxing federal agents, posting their home addresses on message boards and flyers around the city, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
In response to that violence in Portland and elsewhere, last week, Trump issued an executive order saying, &#8220;I hereby designate Antifa as a &#8216;domestic terrorist organization.&#8217;” calling it a “militarist, anarchist enterprise that explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States Government” while using a “campaign of violence and terrorism nationwide to accomplish these goals.” 
Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller <a href="https://x.com/Huberton/status/1971953265408725073">said</a> earlier this month: “The Antifa riots, the attacks on ICE officers, the doxxing campaigns, and now the political assassinations. These are not lone, isolated events. This is part of an organized campaign of radical left terrorism. It is structured and sophisticated, well-funded, it is well planned … It is terrorism on our soil.”
Portland pushes back: Flyers were reportedly posted around the city, calling on members to “Squad up. Make travel plans. Bring PPE and your unhinged Portland energy.”
Democratic lawmakers in the city have doubled down on their opposition to Trump — the city’s official website has a permanent banner at the very top that reads “Portland is a sanctuary city.” The site links to an anti-ICE hotline and reassures residents that local law enforcement will not cooperate with federal immigration agents. Over the weekend, Democratic lawmakers from across the city decried Trump’s efforts as authoritarian, saying they had things under control.
Oregon Democratic Governor Tina Kotek <a href="https://x.com/KatieDaviscourt/status/1972054518994190732">said</a> on Saturday: “Portland and the state of Oregon believe in the rule of law, and we can manage our own local public safety needs. There is no insurrection, there is no threat to national security, and there is no need for military troops in our major city. They are not needed here.”
On Sunday, Oregon and Portland filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump administration in an effort to block the deployment of the state’s National Guard. Their suit claimed in part, “Far from promoting public safety, Defendants’ provocative and arbitrary actions threaten to undermine public safety by inciting a public outcry.”

Trump weighs in: President Trump aired some frustration on his <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115277207989888806">Truth Social</a> account on Saturday. He wrote, “This is different from what [former FBI Director Christopher Wray] stated, over and over again!” Trump lumped in Wray with former FBI Director James Comey as two officials who “got caught lying.” The president later told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-weighs-whether-doj-investigate-former-fbi-director-christopher-w-rcna234225">NBC News</a> that he “would certainly imagine” that Wray is being investigated by the Justice Department.
The new sheriff: FBI Director Kash Patel <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fbis-patel-clarifies-role-hundreds-agents-jan-6-says-wray-lied-congress">clarified</a> that the plainclothes agents were sent in “against FBI standards” after the riot had started for crowd control, and that “[t]his was the failure of a corrupt leadership that lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened.”
The hot seat: Wray is facing numerous questions, even from rank-and-file FBI agents who were present at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. An after-action report <a href="https://justthenews.com/accountability/fbi-bombshell-274-agents-sent-capitol-j6-many-later-complained-they-were-political">revealed</a> to Congress last week lists a host of issues that agents have had with FBI leadership. Several agents have expressed concerns that politics had deeply influenced the bureau’s mission over the course of Comey and Wray’s tenures.
Another indictment?: Republican Congressman Andy Biggs of Arizona said Wray “will be held accountable” and pointed to an <a href="https://x.com/RepAndyBiggsAZ/status/1679164288546529281">exchange</a> he had with Wray in 2023:

Worth noting: If it comes to an indictment, some have disputed that “plainclothes” is synonymous with “undercover.” Additionally, Wray made it clear that he believed his statements to be true, but stopped short of explicitly stating they were true. This ambiguity underscores that, regardless of the frustration over the FBI, perjury cases are challenging to win convictions in.

A 25-year-old former member of the National Guard is accused of attempting to provide 3D-printed weapons to someone he believed was a member of al-Qaeda, according to a criminal complaint unsealed on Wednesday. 
While serving in the National Guard, Andrew Hastings of Tulsa, Oklahoma, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/man-arrested-and-charged-attempting-provide-al-qaida-weapons">allegedly</a> shipped more than one hundred parts for weapons to an undercover agent with the intent of assisting the radical Islamic terrorist group. He is charged with attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization and illegal possession or transfer of a machine gun.
Hastings first came under FBI scrutiny in June 2024 after he was found to be “discussing committing acts of violence against U.S. civilians in furtherance of global jihad” on a social media app, according to the Justice Department. At the time, he worked as an aircraft powertrain repairer and held a national security clearance.
On social media, Hastings allegedly encouraged others in a group chat discussing acts of terrorism to develop cyberspace skills and start physical training. He allegedly offered to provide Army manuals related to tactics and the manufacture of weapons and expressed interest in creating a nuclear weapon. 
According to the complaint, Hastings then began conversing with an undercover agent who claimed to have ties to al-Qaeda. Surveillance footage cited in court documents reportedly shows Hastings dropping off boxes at a post office to ship 3D printed machine gun conversion switches, two 3D printed lower receivers for a handgun, a handgun slide, and other handgun parts for “al-Qaida for use in terrorist attacks.”
Investigators also stated that he took an overseas trip without reporting it to his superiors as required. Hastings voluntarily left the National Guard on June 6, 2025, as the investigation was ongoing. 
The FBI, the Army, the ATF, and the Tulsa Police Department investigated the case. 
“The successful arrest of this Soldier is a testament to the strong partnership between Army Counterintelligence Command and the FBI,” said Brig. Gen. Sean Stinchon, the commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command, adding that the Army remained committed to ensuring that “individuals who support terrorist organizations are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

His decision to deploy troops to Memphis means that the president will be working with a friendly state government. Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/2025/09/10/gov-lee-activates-new-thp-surge-combat-crime-memphis-alongside-fbis-operation-viper/">said</a> on Wednesday that he is collaborating with the Trump administration on a plan to address crime in Memphis.

Recently released FBI data on violent crime rates in 2024 showed that Memphis is the most violent city in the United States, NBC&#8217;s Nashville affiliate, WSMV 4, <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/2025/09/05/this-tennessee-city-has-highest-violent-crime-rate-country-see-where-your-home-ranks/">reported</a> last week. Last year, Memphis saw 2,501 instances of violent crime for every 100,000 people. The violent crime rate in Memphis was far higher than that of other most violent cities in America. The next highest on the list was Oakland, California, with 1,925 violent crimes reported for every 100,000 people, and Detroit was No. 3 with 1,781 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
Trump has praised the work of the National Guard and federal law enforcement agents in Washington, D.C., after he sent them into the nation&#8217;s capital and directed the Metropolitan Police Department to crack down on violent crime. The president said he wants to address violent crime in cities across the United States.

Washington, D.C., filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Thursday, arguing that the president’s National Guard deployment in the nation’s capital is an “illegal federal overreach.”
D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb, a Democrat, <a href="https://oag.dc.gov/release/attorney-general-schwalb-sues-end-illegal-national">argued</a> that the deployment “is not only unnecessary and unwanted, but it is also dangerous and harmful to the District and its residents.” The lawsuit claims that Trump’s move to send in National Guard troops to help address D.C.’s violent crime problem deprives “the District of the local autonomy granted under the Home Rule Act.”
“No American city should have the US military – particularly out-of-state military who are not accountable to the residents and untrained in local law enforcement – policing its streets,” Schwalb added. “It’s D.C. today but could be any other city tomorrow. We’ve filed this action to put an end to this illegal federal overreach.”
President Donald Trump said he deployed the National Guard to the nation’s capital on August 11 to “reestablish law, order and public safety.” Trump also ordered federal law enforcement officers to assist in making arrests. The White House fired back after the lawsuit was filed, telling <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/04/us/dc-trump-national-guard-suit.html">The New York Times</a> that D.C.’s move was “nothing more than another attempt — at the detriment of D.C. residents and visitors — to undermine the President’s highly successful operations to stop violent crime in D.C.”

On Wednesday, Trump <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/crime/trump-dc-crime-down-100-percent-heres-what-numbers-show/">declared</a> that D.C. “is a totally safe city” following his executive action. “You are not reporting any crime because there is none,” Trump said. “They said crime is down 87%, then I said ‘no it’s not. It’s down 100%.’”
According to <a href="https://mpdc.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/mpdc/publication/attachments/9.1.2025%20Surge%20Report.pdf">data</a> released by the Metropolitan Police Department, violent crime has gone down 39% during Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and federal law enforcement agents compared to the same time last year. Homicides dropped 58% and burglaries decreased by 49%, according to the Metropolitan Police Department’s statistics. President Trump has questioned the D.C. police department’s crime data after allegations surfaced earlier this year that officials “cooked the books” to keep crime numbers down.
The lawsuit follows a ruling from a federal judge on Tuesday who said that Trump broke the law when he deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles during violent anti-ICE protests in June, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-rules-trump-illegally-deployed-us-military-to-los-angeles">reported</a>. The order from Judge Charles Breyer, the younger brother of former liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, takes effect next week.
Breyer’s order blocks the Trump administration from using around 300 National Guard troops left in Los Angeles to engage “in arrests, apprehensions, searches, seizures, security patrols, traffic control, crowd control, riot control, evidence collection, interrogation, or acting as informants, unless and until Defendants satisfy the requirements of a valid constitutional or statutory exception.”
The lawsuit filed by D.C. against Trump makes similar arguments as the case brought against the president in California, claiming that the National Guard deployment to cities violates the Posse Comitatus Act by using the military for domestic law enforcement. While Trump’s move is challenged in D.C., he is also considering deploying the National Guard to tackle violent crime in other cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, and Baltimore.

Over the Labor Day weekend, nearly 60 people were shot, and at least nine people were killed in Chicago. Under Chicago Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson, the city experienced <a href="https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/chicago-crime-numbers-johnson-releases-2024-stats-touts-citys-progress.amp?utm_source=chatgpt.com">572 homicides</a> in 2024, making it the deadliest U.S. city by total homicides for the 13th consecutive year.

On Tuesday, Trump had a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/09/02/trump-chicago-national-guard/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">succinct response</a> when asked by reporters if he had decided whether to send National Guard troops to Chicago, declaring, “We’re going in. I didn’t say when we’re going in. … This isn’t a political thing. I have an obligation.”
He <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-chicago-baltimore-law-enforcement-6d7c80258f17c3d679358467531f7e9d">added</a> that if Pritzker would “call me up, I would love to do it. Now, we’re going to do it anyway. We have the right to do it. Because I have an obligation to protect this country and that includes Baltimore. &#8230; Baltimore’s a very unsafe place.”
