President Donald Trump announced on Friday morning that the National Guard will be deployed to crime-ridden Memphis, a Democrat-run city in deep-red Tennessee.
&#8220;We&#8217;re going to Memphis. I&#8217;m just announcing that now,&#8221; Trump told &#8220;Fox &amp; Friends&#8221; during an interview in the studio. &#8220;National Guard and anybody else we need, and by the way, we&#8217;re bringing the military too if we need it.&#8221;
Trump has recently suggested that multiple cities — such as Chicago, Baltimore, and New Orleans — could be next on his list for a federal intervention to combat violent crime. His decision to deploy troops to Memphis means that the president will be working with a friendly state government. Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/2025/09/10/gov-lee-activates-new-thp-surge-combat-crime-memphis-alongside-fbis-operation-viper/">said</a> on Wednesday that he is collaborating with the Trump administration on a plan to address crime in Memphis.
&#8220;For months, I have been in constant communication with the Trump Administration to develop a strategic plan to combat crime in Memphis, leveraging the full extent of both federal and state resources,&#8221; Lee said. &#8220;This multi-phased approach includes Operation Viper — an ongoing FBI mission with a dedicated task force of federal, state, and local law enforcement that has already made hundreds of arrests targeting the most violent offenders. Additionally, I have activated a new Tennessee Highway Patrol surge to support the Memphis Police Department that will include 50 more troopers, bringing our THP presence in Shelby County to record levels.&#8221;
Recently released FBI data on violent crime rates in 2024 showed that Memphis is the most violent city in the United States, NBC&#8217;s Nashville affiliate, WSMV 4, <a href="https://www.wsmv.com/2025/09/05/this-tennessee-city-has-highest-violent-crime-rate-country-see-where-your-home-ranks/">reported</a> last week. Last year, Memphis saw 2,501 instances of violent crime for every 100,000 people. The violent crime rate in Memphis was far higher than that of other most violent cities in America. The next highest on the list was Oakland, California, with 1,925 violent crimes reported for every 100,000 people, and Detroit was No. 3 with 1,781 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
Trump has praised the work of the National Guard and federal law enforcement agents in Washington, D.C., after he sent them into the nation&#8217;s capital and directed the Metropolitan Police Department to crack down on violent crime. The president said he wants to address violent crime in cities across the United States.

Washington, D.C., filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Thursday, arguing that the president’s National Guard deployment in the nation’s capital is an “illegal federal overreach.”
D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb, a Democrat, <a href="https://oag.dc.gov/release/attorney-general-schwalb-sues-end-illegal-national">argued</a> that the deployment “is not only unnecessary and unwanted, but it is also dangerous and harmful to the District and its residents.” The lawsuit claims that Trump’s move to send in National Guard troops to help address D.C.’s violent crime problem deprives “the District of the local autonomy granted under the Home Rule Act.”
“No American city should have the US military – particularly out-of-state military who are not accountable to the residents and untrained in local law enforcement – policing its streets,” Schwalb added. “It’s D.C. today but could be any other city tomorrow. We’ve filed this action to put an end to this illegal federal overreach.”
President Donald Trump said he deployed the National Guard to the nation’s capital on August 11 to “reestablish law, order and public safety.” Trump also ordered federal law enforcement officers to assist in making arrests. The White House fired back after the lawsuit was filed, telling <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/04/us/dc-trump-national-guard-suit.html">The New York Times</a> that D.C.’s move was “nothing more than another attempt — at the detriment of D.C. residents and visitors — to undermine the President’s highly successful operations to stop violent crime in D.C.”
The White House said last week that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/in-less-than-a-month-trumps-federal-d-c-force-makes-more-than-1k-arrests?author=Mary+Margaret+Olohan&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=11&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=In+Less+Than+A+Month%2C+Trump%E2%80%99s+Federal+D.C.+Force+Makes+More+Than+1K+Arrests">more than 1,000 arrests</a> have been made, including apprehensions of many suspected illegal immigrants, in D.C. since Trump deployed the National Guard. An administration official told Daily Wire White House Correspondent Mary Margaret Olohan that authorities also seized more than 100 firearms and cleared nearly 50 homeless encampments.
On Wednesday, Trump <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/crime/trump-dc-crime-down-100-percent-heres-what-numbers-show/">declared</a> that D.C. “is a totally safe city” following his executive action. “You are not reporting any crime because there is none,” Trump said. “They said crime is down 87%, then I said ‘no it’s not. It’s down 100%.’”
According to <a href="https://mpdc.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/mpdc/publication/attachments/9.1.2025%20Surge%20Report.pdf">data</a> released by the Metropolitan Police Department, violent crime has gone down 39% during Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and federal law enforcement agents compared to the same time last year. Homicides dropped 58% and burglaries decreased by 49%, according to the Metropolitan Police Department’s statistics. President Trump has questioned the D.C. police department’s crime data after allegations surfaced earlier this year that officials “cooked the books” to keep crime numbers down.
The lawsuit follows a ruling from a federal judge on Tuesday who said that Trump broke the law when he deployed the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles during violent anti-ICE protests in June, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-rules-trump-illegally-deployed-us-military-to-los-angeles">reported</a>. The order from Judge Charles Breyer, the younger brother of former liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, takes effect next week.
Breyer’s order blocks the Trump administration from using around 300 National Guard troops left in Los Angeles to engage “in arrests, apprehensions, searches, seizures, security patrols, traffic control, crowd control, riot control, evidence collection, interrogation, or acting as informants, unless and until Defendants satisfy the requirements of a valid constitutional or statutory exception.”
The lawsuit filed by D.C. against Trump makes similar arguments as the case brought against the president in California, claiming that the National Guard deployment to cities violates the Posse Comitatus Act by using the military for domestic law enforcement. While Trump’s move is challenged in D.C., he is also considering deploying the National Guard to tackle violent crime in other cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans, and Baltimore.

WASHINGTON — The White House is encouraging Democrat mayors across the United States to follow the lead of D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who shared Tuesday that the nation&#8217;s capitol will continue to partner with President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Safe and Beautiful Task Force&#8221; going forward.
In a Tuesday press release, the D.C. mayor announced she had issued an order continuing the work of the Safe and Beautiful Emergency Operations Center and task force, sharing that &#8220;during and after the Presidential emergency, the SBEOC will manage the District’s response, coordinate centralized communications, and ensure coordination with federal law enforcement to the maximum extent allowable by law within the District.&#8221;
&#8220;The mayor’s fellow Democrats should take note, working with President Trump means safer communities and less crime – no one in their right mind could seriously oppose that,&#8221; White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stressed on Tuesday.
Trump&#8217;s efforts to crack down on crime in Washington, D.C., have been hugely successful: every night, the federal force in Washington has arrested around 70-80 criminals, many of whom are illegal immigrants.

On Monday evening, for example, authorities made 70 arrests, 27 of whom were illegal aliens. That brought the city&#8217;s total arrests to 1,669 since the beginning of operations on Thursday, August 7. One of those arrests was an individual who assaulted a 77-year-old woman and stole her purse, another was for assault with a dangerous weapon, another for assault during a domestic dispute in which the subject choked the victim, and more.
The total D.C. arrests include 16 known gang members, including MS-13 and TDA gang members, rescues of 5 missing children, 168 firearms seized, and 50 homeless encampments cleared by multi-agency teams.
“President Trump’s efforts to crack down on crime in D.C. have yielded tremendous results in such a short time &#8212; violent crime has plummeted and dangerous criminals are being removed from the streets every single night,&#8221; Leavitt said Tuesday.
&#8220;The Trump administration is grateful to continue partnering with Mayor Bowser to make D.C. the safest city in the country,&#8221; she added.
Trump has set his eyes on Baltimore, Maryland, and Chicago, Illinois, for federal enforcement next.
&#8220;We&#8217;re going in,&#8221; he told reporters on Tuesday, asked about deploying federal troops to Chicago and Baltimore. He did not specify when, exactly, the deployments would take place. He also said he would &#8220;love&#8221; if JB Pritzker called and asked for his help with the National Guard.
&#8220;We&#8217;re going to do it anyway,&#8221; he said on Tuesday. &#8220;We have the right to do it.”

A federal judge on Tuesday said that President Donald Trump broke the law by deploying the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles County amid violent protests targeting immigration enforcement operations. 
Judge Charles Breyer, the younger brother of former liberal Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/70496361/176/newsom-v-trump/">issued</a> a ruling that Trump was using the military to enforce domestic law in violation of federal law. The Trump administration had argued that the deployment of about 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to Los Angeles was only to protect federal property and personnel. 
“Nevertheless, at Defendants’ orders and contrary to Congress’s explicit instruction, federal troops executed the laws,” wrote Breyer, a Clinton-appointed judge. “The evidence at trial established that Defendants systematically used armed soldiers (whose identity was often obscured by protective armor) and military vehicles to set up protective perimeters and traffic blockades, engage in crowd control, and otherwise demonstrate a military presence in and around Los Angeles.”
The specific law that Breyer said Trump violated was the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the use of the military to enforce domestic law. 
Breyer’s order, which takes effect in 10 days, blocks Trump from using the approximately 300 National Guard troops left in Los Angeles from “engaging in arrests, apprehensions, searches, seizures, security patrols, traffic control, crowd control, riot control, evidence collection, interrogation, or acting as informants, unless and until Defendants satisfy the requirements of a valid constitutional or statutory exception.”
The case came to Breyer after California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom sued Trump.
“DONALD TRUMP LOSES AGAIN,” Newsom posted on X. “The courts agree — his militarization of our streets and use of the military against US citizens is ILLEGAL.”
Responding to the ruling, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli said that Breyer’s decision was misleading and that the National Guard would not be leaving Los Angeles. 
“The military will remain in Los Angeles,” he <a href="https://x.com/USAttyEssayli/status/1962891988291957185">wrote</a> on X. “This is a false narrative and a misleading injunction. The military has never engaged in direct law enforcement operations here in LA. They protect our federal employees our properties so our federal agents can safely enforce federal laws in the face of the thugs being unleashed and encouraged by state and local politicians.”
A previous decision from Breyer blocking Trump from taking control of the National Guard from Newsom was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-scores-big-win-against-newsom-in-california-national-guard-clash">overturned</a> by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. That court agreed with the Trump administration that the National Guard was only being used to protect federal property and personnel.

A growing number of Blue State governors have begun to draw battle lines over President Donald Trump&#8217;s use of National Guard troops and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to clean up violent crime — and expedite the deportation of criminal illegals — in major cities all across the country.
For those who don&#8217;t spend their Sunday mornings glued to the television — and their Sunday afternoons attempting to dig through a week&#8217;s worth of network and cable news media spin — The Daily Wire has compiled a short summary of what you may have missed.
Governor Wes Moore (D-MD) joined host Martha Raddatz on ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; and he began by blaming Trump for the animosity between them and claiming that he would &#8220;love&#8221; help from the Trump administration to clean up his city.

Moore continued to buck Trump&#8217;s suggestion that the National Guard ought to play a role, arguing that the military should not be utilized in that fashion. Trump has argued that since their deployment in Washington, D.C., has been quite effective, the same should be done in other major cities with similar crime problems.

On CBS News&#8217; broadcast of &#8220;Face the Nation,&#8221; Governor JB Pritzker (D-IL) took a remarkably similar posture. While claiming he&#8217;d welcome help from the federal government to address violent crime, Pritzker also claimed that his state — even Chicago — was making great progress and said he&#8217;d fight back if Trump&#8217;s help came in the form of ICE agents or the National Guard.

Pritzker went on to chastise Trump for pointing out the violent crime rampant in Chicago, claiming instead that the biggest crime problems were in red states. What he did not mention was the fact that those cities were almost all controlled by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jb-pritzker-tries-to-fact-check-trump-gets-his-backside-handed-to-him-by-grok-instead">Democratic mayors</a>.

The Illinois Governor — who has also been rumored to have presidential aspirations — then claimed that shootings were also &#8220;down significantly&#8221; in Chicago before he pivoted to push for even more gun control.

Attorney General Pam Bondi fired a Justice Department staffer seen flipping off National Guard troops in Washington, D.C.
Bondi announced the staffing change in a Friday post on X. The former employee, Elizabeth Baxter, was caught by a Justice Department security camera flipping off National Guard troops and telling them to “f*** off,” according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/08/29/us-news/bondi-fires-doj-staffer-who-flipped-off-national-guard-in-dc-and-was-seen-boasting-about-it/">New York Post</a>.
“Today, I took action to terminate a DOJ employee for inappropriate conduct towards National Guard service members in DC. @TheJusticeDept remains committed to defending President Trump’s agenda and fighting to make America safe again,” Bondi posted. “If you oppose our mission and disrespect law enforcement — you will NO LONGER work at DOJ.”

Baxter bragged about her confrontation with the National Guard troops to a security guard at the Department of Justice. On August 18, Baxter told a security guard that she had made the rude gesture to a National Guardsman at the Metro Center Metro Stop. A week later on August 25, she spoke to the security guard again about her feelings against the National Guard, according to the Post.
Baxter worked in the “4CON” building of the Justice Department – the same building that former Justice Department paralegal Sean Charles Dunn worked in. Dunn was fired from the department after allegedly throwing a Subway sandwich at a Customs and Border Patrol officer.

Dunn was fired and charged earlier this month over the incident. In a video captured by a bystander, the 37-year-old former Justice Department employee allegedly shouted at federal agents, calling them “fascists” and yelling “f*** you.”
Dunn then began to walk away from the officers before stopping, approaching the federal agents, and allegedly throwing his sandwich at an officer before trying to run away.
On Wednesday, a grand jury <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/after-failing-felony-indictment-feds-charge-dc-sandwich/story?id=125078765">refused</a> to charge Dunn with felony assault over the sandwich toss. Federal prosecutors have since charged him again with a misdemeanor.
Bondi said earlier this month that Dunn had been fired over the incident.
“This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ,” Bondi <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doj-employee-faces-felony-after-chucking-sandwich-at-federal-agent-to-protest-trumps-d-c-takeover">said</a> in a post on X at the time. “You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”

Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker hit back at President Donald Trump on Monday, as the president considers deploying the National Guard to Chicago.
Trump said in the Oval Office that he would like to work with Democratic governors and mayors to deploy the National Guard to major cities to address violent crime. Pritzker <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q04p3OJdhpU&amp;list=RDNSQ04p3OJdhpU&amp;start_radio=1">responded</a> to Trump’s comments during a press conference with local and state Democratic leaders, saying that Trump and the National Guard are “neither wanted here nor needed here.”
“If this was really about fighting crime or making the streets safe, what possible justification could the White House have for planning such an exceptional action without any conversations or consultations with the governor, the mayor, or the police?” Pritzker asked. “Let me answer that question. This is not about fighting crime. This is about Donald Trump searching for any justification to deploy the military in a blue city in a blue state to try to intimidate his political rivals.”
The Illinois governor said that Trump’s plans to deploy the National Guard to Chicago are “exactly the type of overreach that our country’s founders warned against.”
“Earlier today in the Oval Office, Donald Trump looked at the assembled cameras and asked for me personally to say, ‘Mr. President, can you do us the honor of protecting our city?’” Priztker added. “Instead, I say, ‘Mr. President, do not come to Chicago. You are neither wanted here nor needed here.’”
While Trump has not officially taken any step toward deploying the National Guard or federal law enforcement agents to Chicago, he said last week that the Windy City would be “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-chicago-is-next-for-d-c-style-federal-law-enforcement-operation">next</a>” after he ordered the National Guard and federal agents to address violent crime in the nation’s capital. On Monday, the president <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/that-guy-is-a-disaster-trump-rips-into-another-blue-state-governor-with-presidential-dreams">continued</a> his calls for a National Guard deployment in Chicago, adding that he would prefer that Democratic leaders ask him to send in the troops.

“You really want to be asked to go, you know,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I hate to barge in on a city and then be treated horribly by corrupt politicians and bad politicians, like a guy like Pritzker. He ought to spend more time at the gym, actually.”
“That guy is a disaster,” he added.
Among U.S. cities with more than one million residents, Chicago has faced the highest murder rate for seven straight years, according to <a href="https://www.rit.edu/liberalarts/sites/rit.edu.liberalarts/files/docs/CPSI%20Working%20Papers/2025-02_CPSI%20Working%20Paper_US%20City%20Homicide%20Stats.pdf">data</a> put together by the Rochester Institute of Technology and <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/08/yes-chicago-has-a-crime-problem-just-ask-its-residents/">cited</a> by the White House. In 2024, Chicago had a homicide rate of 21.7 per 100,000 people. Chicago’s murder rate was three times higher than that of Los Angeles and more than five times higher than New York’s. The Trump administration is also reportedly considering sending in the National Guard to address violent crime in Los Angeles and New York City.
Trump enraged Democrats when he sidestepped California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles earlier this summer as parts of the county faced violent anti-ICE protests. Newsom sued the Trump administration over the National Guard deployment, and the <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/national-guard-los-angeles-deployment-trial-day-3/">decision</a> in that case is currently pending before a federal judge.

President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office on Friday that Chicago is next on his list of places where he wants to use his power to root out violent crime.
Speaking to reporters and praising federal agents for the violent crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., Trump set his sights on Chicago, where gang violence and shootings have become the norm under Democratic leadership.
&#8220;Chicago is a mess, you have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent, and we will straighten that one out next. That will be our next one after this, and it won’t even be tough,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://wgntv.com/news/chicago-news/i-think-chicago-will-be-next-president-trump-signals-plans-to-extend-crackdown-on-crime-to-chicago/">said</a>.
Trump also hinted at moving federal resources to New York City after taking care of Chicago.
&#8220;And the people in Chicago &#8230; are screaming for us to come. They are wearing red hats, just like this one,&#8221; Trump said, referring to his &#8220;Trump Was Right About Everything&#8221; hat. “African American ladies, beautiful ladies, are saying, ‘Please, Mr. Trump, come to Chicago, please.’ I did great with the black vote, as you know, and they want something to happen. While Chicago has reported a decrease in homicides and other violent crimes in recent years, the Windy City is still <a href="https://news.wttw.com/2024/03/11/homicides-drop-nationwide-chicago-lags-behind-other-major-cities-why">lagging behind</a> some other major cities in tackling its murder problem. In 2023, Chicago reported 617 homicides, which was a decrease from the 715 murders in 2022, but still higher than America&#8217;s two largest cities, New York City and Los Angeles.
Earlier this month, 34 people were shot, five of whom were killed, in shootings across Chicago during one weekend, ABC 7 Chicago <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/post/chicago-shootings-weekend-least-10-shot-2-fatally-gun-violence-city-police-department-says/17483197/">reported</a>. The violence has continued this week, with three people killed and another person wounded in multiple shootings in the city on Thursday, according to <a href="https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/chicago-crime-garfield-park-shootings">Fox 32</a>.
Chicago&#8217;s elected Democratic politicians criticized Trump over his comments on sending troops to the city, with Mayor Brandon Johnson calling Trump&#8217;s approach &#8220;uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound,&#8221; according to <a href="https://wgntv.com/news/chicago-news/i-think-chicago-will-be-next-president-trump-signals-plans-to-extend-crackdown-on-crime-to-chicago/">WGN 9</a>.

In Washington, D.C., Trump has the authority to deploy National Guard troops and federal law enforcement officers through the &#8220;Home Rule Act.&#8221; Deploying the National Guard to another American city wouldn&#8217;t be as simple and would likely require Trump to sidestep Democratic Governor JB Pritzker, similar to what the president did when he sent troops to Los Angeles earlier this summer. That move was challenged in court and is currently before a federal judge.
