The Washington D.C. Council’s pathetic, politically charged attempts to kick the National Guard out of the nation’s capital have hit a brick wall, with the Department of Justice firing back.
In a scathing letter that pulls no punches, Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald shredded the council’s efforts to pressure state governors into recalling their troops, labeling the move &#8220;impotent theatrics&#8221; that aren&#8217;t worth the paper they&#8217;re written on.
“I am not surprised that your recent letter to state governors regarding the National Guard feigns ignorance of the historic public safety strides made in our Nation&#8217;s capital since August 11, 2025,” McDonald wrote, effectively telling the local politicians to wake up and look at the safe streets they are currently presiding over.
The council, apparently nostalgic for the days of out-of-control chaos, has tried to frame the presence of the Guard as an unwelcome occupation. McDonald wasn&#8217;t having it. He laid out the cold, hard reality: since President Trump declared a crime emergency on August 11, 2025, the city has undergone a miraculous transformation.
The DOJ official didn&#8217;t hesitate to call out the council’s own hypocrisy. He unearthed a quote from D.C. Councilmember Trayon White, who signed the letter demanding the Guard leave, describing D.C. as a &#8220;war zone” in 2023. At the time, White begged for the very resources the council is now trying to banish, complaining that the community lacked officers and resources. Now that the &#8220;war&#8221; is actually being won, the council has developed a convenient case of amnesia.
The results, however, are impossible to ignore. Thanks to the Task Force and the National Guard, D.C. has experienced the largest reduction in violent crime in its entire history. While the council whines about &#8220;outside forces,&#8221; the Guard is out there doing the work: taking illegal guns off the streets, conducting thousands of arrests, protecting critical infrastructure, and literally saving lives by intervening in assaults and administering life-saving Narcan to citizens in peril.
McDonald lauded these troops as &#8220;true American heroes,&#8221; noting they are serving selflessly to restore order while local officials prioritize political grandstanding over public safety.
On November 26, 2025, two members of the West Virginia National Guard deployed to Washington, D.C., were shot in an ambush-style attack outside the Farragut West Metro station, two blocks from the White House. U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from her injuries on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, was critically injured in the attack but survived. Authorities arrested Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who had entered the U.S. in 2021. He was charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill, and firearm offenses. He pleaded not guilty.

The message from the DOJ to the council was simple and brutal: You have zero power to kick them out, so stop the noise. Instead of slandering the men and women in uniform, the council should focus on their actual jobs: fixing the city&#8217;s broken laws to ensure real criminals are finally punished.
&#8220;My office is available to assist you in this regard,&#8221; McDonald concluded with a sting.
As for the Guard? They’re staying.

WASHINGTON — One year after President Donald Trump began his mission to &#8220;Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful&#8221; again, the nation&#8217;s capital is noticeably cleaner and safer.
The president declared a crime emergency on August 11 of last year and launched a federal surge soon afterward as part of his &#8220;Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force.&#8221; Trump was determined to clean up the streets and monuments of the city and to put criminals behind bars, spurred on by the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a Capitol Hill intern.
Washington is not the same place it was a year ago. As of August 2026, the city&#8217;s fountains are running again. Graffiti is cleaned off most major monuments. National Guardsmen stroll the streets and chat with tourists and families.
&#8220;This has been the largest, most aggressive law enforcement collaboration ever assembled to confront crime in a major American city,&#8221; the U.S. Marshals shared in a press release, describing how &#8220;federal, state, and local law enforcement&#8221; stood &#8220;shoulder to shoulder with the National Guard, refusing to accept violence as the status quo in Washington, D.C.&#8221;

Trump&#8217;s efforts to clean up D.C. resulted in over 16,000 arrests, the U.S. Marshals shared. Thirty-five homicide suspects were apprehended, and authorities found 25 missing children and returned them to their homes. Authorities took more than 100 gang members off the streets and made more than 3,200 narcotics arrests. They also seized almost 2,000 illegal firearms.
Newly confirmed Attorney General Todd Blanche described the Justice Department&#8217;s efforts, in collaboration with their law enforcement partners, as &#8220;extraordinary.&#8221;
&#8220;More than 16,000 arrests, thousands of illegal drugs and firearms taken off the streets, and dangerous violent offenders brought to justice mean safer neighborhoods and lives protected,&#8221; he said in a statement. &#8220;We will not relent until every community in Washington, D.C., is safe.&#8221;
In September 2025, the task force tracked down two suspects in Tarpinian-Jachym&#8217;s killing, 17-year-old Jailen Lucas and 17-year-old Kelvin Thomas, as well as a third suspect, 18-year-old Naqwan Lucas, who was apprehended in October 2025. Lucas was also charged with the murder of 17-year-old Zoey Kelley.
The task force additionally arrested 19-year-old Laurence Cotton-Powell and 18-year-old Anthony Taylor for violently attacking and beating a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer.

And in January, the task force captured three confirmed MS-13 gang members who were wanted on first-degree murder warrants for shooting a 14-year-old boy in Prince George&#8217;s County, Maryland.
&#8220;This operation shows the relentless dedication we have to investigate and apprehend the most violent, dangerous fugitives,&#8221; Gadyaces S. Serralta, director of the U.S. Marshals Service, shared in a statement. &#8220;When law enforcement works together, the impact is exponential. The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force is proof of that the whole-of-government approach works.”
Two National Guardsmen were ambushed while they were serving under the task force. On November 26, 2025, a shooter targeted Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe of the West Virginia Air National Guard and Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom. Beckstrom was killed by the gunman, while Wolfe continues to recover from his wounds.

The Democratic Socialist candidate for Wisconsin governor, who is currently leading the Democratic primary, advocated for using American troops to round up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents operating in the Badger State.
Wisconsin State Rep. Francesca Hong made the remarks during an October appearance on Resistance Radio, when host Dane Snudden asked about the importance of having &#8220;a leader that is going to stand up to Trump.&#8221;
&#8220;I don&#8217;t want us to continue to rely on law enforcement, but if the National Guard has to be out here arresting ICE agents, you have to meet state-sanctioned violence with parts of the state sometimes,&#8221; Hong said during the October 31 podcast episode.

Hong has previously espoused an anti-ICE stance, saying that &#8220;dismantling ICE is the bare minimum.&#8221;
&#8220;Merely removing enforcers of fascism is not enough. We need investments in community care not state sanctioned violence,&#8221; Hong said.
She also accused ICE of &#8220;tearing apart families and our communities with unconstitutional practices that threaten public safety.&#8221;
Last year, Hong introduced a series of bills to ban ICE agents from wearing masks and end state and local cooperation with the agency.
Hong has also presented an anti-police stance more broadly.
In a 2020 X post, Hong wrote that she supports &#8220;defunding the police as a first step towards abolishing the police.&#8221; Months later, she argued that &#8220;police exist to uphold white supremacy,&#8221; before saying, &#8220;defund then abolish,&#8221; and that &#8220;reform can&#8217;t be an option.&#8221;
When asked recently by <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/22/politics/kfile-francesca-hong-wisconsin-governor-race-defund-police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> about her past advocacy for abolishing the police, Hong called it part of a “wider conversation around police abolition” since “the current system is not working.”
Hong added that she wouldn&#8217;t make &#8220;arbitrary cuts&#8221; to public safety budgets as governor.
“While I envision a world where public safety is not synonymous with law enforcement, I recognize that this paradigm shift is a very long-term vision and my focus is building systems of care for now and for our future,&#8221; she said.
With Wisconsin&#8217;s Democratic gubernatorial primary set for August 11, Hong is currently the leading candidate in the field, which includes Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, and state Sen. Kelda Roys. The eventual Democratic opponent will face Republican Wisconsin Rep. Tom Tiffany in November&#8217;s general election.

President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that Atlanta might be the next American city to see a surge of federal resources and personnel to help rein in rampant crime.
Trump floated the possibility during a Black History Month event at the White House on Wednesday afternoon: “You need help in Atlanta.&#8221;
&#8220;Atlanta. Atlanta. We could take care of Atlanta. I&#8217;ll tell you what, you oughta get them to call me. We could take care of Atlanta so fast,” he said to applause. “They don&#8217;t want to call. They don’t want to. They don’t want to call cause they don’t want to admit it, and they’ll never fix it themself,” he added.
“Don&#8217;t forget, we move people out. We just don’t go in and, you know, be tough guys. We move people out. We take career criminals and we get them out, we bring them back to the country from where they came. And think of it, 90% of the crime is caused by 2% of the people. So when you get the criminals out, you solve a lot of problems,” he continued.
The Daily Wire reached out to the City of Atlanta for comment, but has not yet received a response. The Trump administration has sent National Guard troops, as well as other federal law enforcement agencies, to cities like Washington, D.C., New Orleans, and Memphis in hopes of bringing down high crime rates.
There has been significant pushback in many blue cities over federal surges, but the president made it clear in a Dec. 31 Truth Social post that he is undeterred: it’s “only a question of time” before federal authorities “come back &#8230; when crime begins to soar again,” he wrote, according to <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/02/13/national-guard-deployments-updates/88646816007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USA Today</a>.
“We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities, and ONLY by that fact. Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were GONE if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Dec. 31.
&#8220;It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made???” he added.
Although murders have gone down in the Georgia city, robberies and assaults have been on the rise, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/atlanta/news/homicide-rate-drops-in-atlanta-but-rising-assaults-and-robberies-leave-police-department-concerned/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS Atlanta</a> reported in January.
Trump is scheduled to visit Rome, Georgia, an hour northwest of Atlanta, for an economy-focused address. Rome is a part of the district left vacant by former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who resigned from Congress earlier this year after a public falling out with the president. A special election is set for March 10, with a runoff to follow on April 7 if none of the candidates in the open race obtain over half of the vote. The president has endorsed Republican Clay Fuller to be Greene’s successor.
“He is strongly supported by the most Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Georgia, and many Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Trump posted to Truth Social on Feb. 4.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz dismantled California’s leftist Governor Gavin Newsom in a blistering history lesson after Newsom attempted to frame the presence of federalized National Guard troops in his state as some unprecedented act of tyranny.
Newsom — apparently recalling President Trump invoking 10 U.S.C. § 12406 in June 2025 to federalize approximately 4,000 members of the California National Guard over  Newsom&#8217;s explicit objections — desperately attempted to stir up a narrative of &#8220;secret police&#8221; and &#8220;masked men,&#8221; comparing the federal response to Nazi Germany. “I want to remember all those images of masked men, the secret police, something familiar in Germany,” Newsom bloviated.
“Those first images came out of my state. The second-largest city in the United States of America. We saw 4,000 National Guard federalized. First time. We&#8217;ve never seen anything like this. And 700 active duty Marines sent — not overseas, but to the second largest city in the United States of America. Militarizing the streets of my city.  Masked men. Masked men showing up. Unaccountable.”
The problem for Newsom? History actually happened.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmhKfG5jBnA">Responding</a> on his &#8220;Verdict&#8221; podcast, Senator Ted Cruz scorched Newsom’s grasp of the American timeline. “Just like AOC and Whitmer, Newsom is apparently thoroughly historically illiterate,” Cruz stated. “He said we’ve never seen National Guards federalized in the states. I guess his history book does not discuss the civil rights movement; he’s never heard of a president named Dwight D. Eisenhower; he’s never heard of sending the National Guard into Southern states. When Democrats, who refused to desegregate schools, resisted, Eisenhower sent the National Guard in. The pattern is the same; in this instance, you have Democrats who are saying, ‘We refuse to comply with federal immigration law.’ Then you had, in the 50s and 60s, you had Democrats saying, ‘We refuse to comply with civil rights law.’ In both instances, it is lawless Democrats attacking law enforcement. Gavin Newsom is proudly following the tradition of Bull Connor, another Democrat politician.”
When Cruz took to X to reiterate that Newsom is “historically illiterate,” the California Governor — rather than defending his grasp of history — opted for the politics of grievance. Newsom, who has been open about his lifelong struggle with dyslexia, attempted to cast Cruz’s critique as a personal attack on his learning disability. “Ted Cruz calling a dyslexic person illiterate is a new low, even for him,” Newsom whimpered.

Cruz was having none of it. Firing back on X, the Texas Senator clarified for the Governor that &#8220;historically illiterate&#8221; refers to a lack of knowledge, not a lack of phonics. “I didn’t say you couldn’t read, you 🤡,” Cruz retorted.
He then dropped the hammer with specific receipts: Executive Order 10730. Cruz detailed how Eisenhower used the 101st Airborne Division to break the blockade imposed by Democratic Governor Orval Faubus, allowing the Little Rock Nine to enter Central High School.

The man accused of shooting two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., in November, killing one and seriously wounding the other victim, made his first court appearance on Wednesday morning.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who was in the United States as a refugee, pleaded not guilty to nine charges, which include a first-degree murder charge and multiple assault and weapons counts. Lakanwal allegedly drove to the capital from Bellingham, Washington, and opened fire on National Guard troops the day before Thanksgiving, killing Sarah Beckstrom and wounding Andrew Wolfe.
Lakanwal, who was shot by return fire, is being held without bond as his trial plays out. His next court date is scheduled for May 6.
Lakanwal&#8217;s first court appearance was originally scheduled for mid-January but was moved back to Wednesday to give his defense team more time to prepare after two additional counts of assault were added onto the charges. The federal murder charge against Lakanwal makes him eligible for the death penalty if he&#8217;s convicted, and shortly after the shooting, Attorney General Pam Bondi said that the federal government would seek it. Prosecutors said again on Wednesday that they could pursue the death penalty.
<h3>What we know about the shooting:</h3>
The National Guard troops from West Virginia were shot in what authorities have described as an ambush-style attack. Beckstrom and Wolfe, who were both patrolling the streets of D.C. as part of President Donald Trump&#8217;s crime crackdown in the nation&#8217;s capital, were shot in the back of the head with a .357 Smith &amp; Wesson revolver, according to court documents. Two National Guard majors who were nearby returned fire and struck the alleged shooter, who was subdued until law enforcement and first responders arrived on the scene.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Renee Raymond, who ordered Lakanwal to remain detained without bond, said that it appeared the suspect drove across the country &#8220;with a specific purpose in mind.&#8221;
<h3>What we know about the suspect:</h3>
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/suspected-national-guard-shooter-was-radicalized-through-connections-in-afghanistan-noem-says">Lakanwal</a> was allowed to enter the United States under former President Joe Biden after he served alongside U.S. troops in Afghanistan as part of a unit that was backed by the CIA. The Afghan national settled in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and children, but the Associated Press reported that he struggled to find a job and assimilate into American culture.
A community advocate who worked to help refugees wrote an email to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in January 2024 stating that Lakanwal “has not been functional as a person, father and provider since March of last year, 03/2023. He quit his job that month, and his behavior has changed greatly.”
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in late November that Lakanwal was &#8220;radicalized&#8221; through &#8220;connections&#8221; he had in Afghanistan after being granted asylum in the United States. President Trump called the shooting a “terrorist attack” and said that the suspect “went nuts.”
“It happens too often with these people,” he added.
Noem also accused the Biden administration of failing to properly vet refugees following the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. Lakanwal’s asylum claim was approved in April under the Trump administration, but Noem claimed that &#8220;the vetting process all happened under Joe Biden’s administration.&#8221;
Lakanwal lived at an apartment unit owned by the Bellingham Housing Authority, a local government agency that provides housing for low-income people, according to a police report obtained by The Daily Wire. Body cam footage and police communications reviewed by The Daily Wire from the night the suspect&#8217;s home was raided revealed that three people — two males and one female — were inside the apartment at the time of the raid.
<h3>What we know about the victims:</h3>
Beckstrom, who was pronounced dead at a hospital on November 27, was a 20-year-old military police officer with the 863rd Military Police Company of the West Virginia Army National Guard. After graduating from Webster County High School with honors, Beckstrom enlisted in the West Virginia Army National Guard in 2023. While serving in the National Guard, Beckstrom was also enrolled at Glenville State University, where she pursued mental health studies. She was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, West Virginia Legion of Merit, the D.C. Distinguished Service Medal, and the D.C. Humanitarian Service Medal.

She was an observant people-watcher who loved exploring and spent her off-duty hours in the District taking in museums and overall city life, her family members said.&#8221;
Wolfe posted a message on social media on Tuesday, saying that he is &#8220;grateful to be alive&#8221; and thanking people for their &#8220;prayers and support.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s been hard to go through something like this. Thank you for everything,&#8221; he added.

An awful scene unfolded in Minneapolis yesterday. Everyone agrees it was an awful scene, but we can&#8217;t quite agree on why.
A leftist woman obstructed federal immigration enforcement, then hit an officer with her SUV, at which point the federal agent shot her. Now, the Democratic governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, is calling on the Minnesota National Guard to commit insurrection against the federal government, against which he says his state is at war.
Where to begin?
The federal agents were entirely in the right. Everyone obstructing law enforcement — from the woman in the SUV all the way to Governor Walz — is entirely in the wrong. But even though her death is entirely her own fault, I can&#8217;t help but feel sorry for her.
Amid the ICE raids in Minneapolis, amid the response to a woman being justly killed, you have examples of leftists not learning their lesson at all. One of the protesters was actually trying to grab the weapon of law enforcement.
Why might one think it&#8217;s okay to grab the weapon of a National Guardsman or law enforcement officer? 
Well, one of the inciting incidents for all of BLM, for all of this leftist anarchy and rioting in recent years, was the Michael Brown case. In that case, Michael Brown, a young thug who had just robbed a store, goes up and starts taunting a cop, then threatens the cop, then reaches into the police car and grabs the cop&#8217;s weapon. The weapon actually discharges, and still the cop doesn&#8217;t kill him until he goes away. And then the thug turns around, comes back, and starts charging the cop. And the way that incident was rewritten by the media was, “that poor little child, Michael Brown, a gentle giant, was executed in cold blood by a racist officer. He did nothing wrong. He had his hands up. He said, &#8216;Don&#8217;t shoot.&#8217;”
Completely made up. 
But if you are one of these leftist activists in the streets and you learn that you can get away with this stuff; if you&#8217;re told law enforcement is evil and racist and terrible, then you need to stop them.
Take, for example, what Maxine Waters (D-CA) said <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJCDe7vdFfw">back in 2018</a> during Trump’s first term:

Then, if you see the Michael Brown case, which helped kick off BLM, you’ll say to yourself, &#8220;I can go grab a cop&#8217;s weapon, and I’m not at fault.&#8221; Well, sooner or later, you are going to get shot, and it&#8217;s going to be your fault. And I feel bad for that person.

But I also blame the Democrats for this situation. I blame people like Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
One day after January 6, on January 7, 2026, Tim Walz literally called for insurrection. He called on Minnesota National Guardsmen to violently oppose federal law enforcement, which is as clear-cut a case of insurrection as there can be. In my view, Walz should be arrested for it.

He wants to be very careful? And deploy the Minnesota National Guard? For those of you who are confused on the matter, take a look at the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. Article VI, clause two of the United States Constitution <a href="https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/article-6/clause-2/">states</a>:
<blockquote>This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.</blockquote>
When Tim Walz says the Minnesota National Guard is there to protect people in the event of a natural disaster, chaos, or rioting, that&#8217;s true. When he says the Minnesota National Guard is there to protect them from federal agents, that&#8217;s not true. That is completely untrue.
That would violate not merely the law and the American political tradition, that would violate the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution.
Either Walz doesn&#8217;t know anything, which is plausible, or he is reckless and a traitor to his country. Either way, there is a strong case to be made that Tim Walz should be arrested for his statements.
Now, I am not someone who says we need to round up all of our political opponents. I&#8217;m really not. I&#8217;m pretty moderate, relative to both the Left and the Right, with my rhetoric. I think there is a very strong case to be made, however, that Tim Walz should be arrested for his statements.
By the way, he doesn&#8217;t stop there.

Tim Walz is effectively stating that he views Minnesota as being at war with the federal government. It&#8217;s not quite a firm declaration, but it&#8217;s about as close as you can get. And he&#8217;s the governor of Minnesota. He&#8217;s declaring war on the government of the United States. He&#8217;s talking about calling up troops to fight the government of the United States.
There is a special irony here. Democrats recently guffawed and howled and cheered because a statue of Robert E. Lee, one of the greatest Americans in history, was taken down in the U.S. Capitol and replaced with someone no one&#8217;s ever heard of. Robert E. Lee was an American patriot who defended his homeland and also helped bring about peace and reconciliation in America.
Lee’s statue comes down because he was a &#8220;terrible, awful, evil insurrectionist.&#8221; You were not allowed to declare war on the government of the United States 150 years ago. Now, sitting Governor Tim Walz, a man who was the most recent Democrat nominee for vice president, was almost one heartbeat away from becoming the second woman president — Tim Walz, as governor, more or less declares war on the federal government. And then begins to take actions to actually back it up.
There actually is a good argument to be made for arresting Tim Walz. He was just caught in a major fraud scandal with the Somalis, and it looks like he&#8217;s engaged in a cover-up of the scandal. Putting that aside, there is still a very strong argument to arrest him for his statements.
The liberals who whine about January 6 are not doing so in any kind of principled way. The same liberals who say you can&#8217;t question election results supported Al Gore when he held up the election results in 2000, probably the most famous example. Then, Hillary Clinton denied the election results, and Stacey Abrams denied the election results in Georgia. So principles play no role in this.
Imagine if the shoe were on the other foot. But let&#8217;s say the libs don&#8217;t believe in any of these principles. Just as a matter of law. Just as a matter of the Constitution. Tim Walz is leading a literal insurrection against the government of the United States. 
I&#8217;m not saying that the federal government should arrest him. I&#8217;m not. I haven&#8217;t come to that conclusion. But they should strongly consider it.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he is pulling National Guard troops from three deep blue cities.
“We are removing the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, despite the fact that CRIME has been greatly reduced by having these great Patriots in those cities, and ONLY by that fact,” Trump posted on <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115816171466225987">Truth Social</a>. “Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago were GONE if it weren’t for the Federal Government stepping in.”
The president said that the withdrawal is not permanent and that the troops will be redeployed depending on crime in the cities.
“We will come back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime begins to soar again &#8211; Only a question of time! It is hard to believe that these Democrat Mayors and Governors, all of whom are greatly incompetent, would want us to leave, especially considering the great progress that has been made???” he wrote.
The withdrawal comes after Trump’s efforts to reduce crime and protect federal immigration agents in major cities suffered a setback from the Supreme Court last week. The court denied Trump’s request to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents carrying out deportation operations in the city.
“At this preliminary stage, the government has failed to identify a source of authority that would allow the military to execute the laws in Illinois,” an unsigned order from the court <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/23/politics/supreme-court-blocks-trump-national-guard-chicago">said</a>.
“[Trump] activated the National Guard to protect federal law enforcement officers, and to ensure rioters did not destroy federal buildings and property,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said at the time. “Nothing in today’s ruling detracts from that core agenda.”
ICE agents under Trump have faced a skyrocketing number of attacks and threats. The Department of Homeland Security reported that ICE agents have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ice-agent-brutally-injured-by-violent-illegal-immigrant-pedophile-speaks-out">faced</a> a 1,000% increase in assaults and an 8,000% increase in death threats.

The Afghan national accused of killing one National Guard soldier and injuring another in a Thanksgiving week attack in Washington, D.C., could now face the death penalty after prosecutors moved the case to federal court.
The Justice Department announced Tuesday that it has filed a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/media/1421951/dl?inline" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criminal complaint</a> against 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, charging him with two federal firearms offenses: transporting or shipping a stolen firearm in interstate commerce and transporting or receiving firearms in interstate or foreign commerce with intent to commit a crime. Lakanwal is also charged with first-degree premeditated murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and assault with intent to kill while armed.
The federal charges bring the case to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia from the D.C. Superior Court. Lakanwal is accused of gunning down U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, both members of the West Virginia National Guard, while they patrolled the streets of the nation&#8217;s capital. Beckstrom died from her wounds just a day after the attack, while Wolfe was critically injured and still in recovery, but expected to survive. 
“The transfer of this case from Superior Court to District Court ensures that we can undertake the serious, deliberate, and weighty analysis required to determine if the death penalty is appropriate here,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. “Sarah Beckstrom was just 20 years old when she was killed and her parents are now forced to endure the holiday season without their daughter. Andrew Wolfe, by the grace of God, survived but has a long road ahead in his recovery.”
The federal complaint filed Tuesday says that Lakanwal “purposely and with deliberate and premeditated malice, killed Beckstrom by shooting her in the head with a firearm. Your affiant also asserts that, by shooting Wolfe in the head with a firearm, LAKANWAL assaulted Wolfe with intent to kill him.”
Lakanwal, who was shot during the attack, pleaded not guilty to the D.C. charges earlier this month. 
According to the complaint, the weapon used in the shooting was a stolen .357 Smith &amp; Wesson revolver. Prosecutors say on October 15, Lakanwal sent photos of an AR-15 and a pistol to an unnamed individual in Washington, where he lived, along with the message, “find this stuff for me.”

“I’m doing [Lyft] an[d] Uber so I will need one of them[.]” Lakanwal allegedly said. The unidentified person replied by saying, “I wish I could help brother but the laws here are to[o] strict[.]”

The criminal complaint states that Lakanwal had not provided a Lyft ride since May, and that a family member told investigators his Uber account had been banned.
The unidentified individual later supplied Lakanwal with the revolver, which had been stolen from a Seattle home in May 2023, according to the complaint. The person who furnished the weapon told investigators he believed Lakanwal wanted it “for personal protection while working as a rideshare driver.”
After obtaining the firearm, Lakanwal is alleged to have purchased ammunition the following day. Two hours later, Lakanwal searched “Washington, D.C.” and “The White House” in Google Maps, according to the complaint.

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration can&#8217;t send National Guard troops to quell violence in the streets of Chicago amid federal immigration raids.
The Trump administration asked the high court to give the federal government the authority to send troops while facing pushback from Democratic Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.
“I want to be clear: there is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois. State, county, and local law enforcement have been working together and coordinating to ensure public safety around the Broadview ICE facility, and to protect people’s ability to peacefully exercise their constitutional rights. I will not call up our National Guard to further Trump’s acts of aggression against our people,&#8221; Pritzker said in October of Trump&#8217;s announcement to federalize 300 National Guard soldiers for the deployment.
The 6-3 decision largely hinged on whether the circumstances on the ground in Chicago can be controlled by &#8220;regular forces.&#8221;
Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and Neil Gorsuch dissented, according to reports.
“At this preliminary stage, the government has failed to identify a source of authority that would allow the military to execute the laws in Illinois,” the court said in its unsigned order, according to CNN.

A lower court previously struck down the Trump administration&#8217;s deployment attempt, sparking the president&#8217;s request for the high court to weigh in on the issue.
The federal government commenced &#8220;Operation Midway Blitz&#8221; in September, deploying federal immigration agents to Illinois, where they&#8217;ve since faced violence and had hefty bounties placed on their heads from Mexican cartels.
Protests were also occurring outside the Broadview ICE facility on an almost weekly basis during the height of the operation.
Still, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol have made roughly 1,500 arrests as part of the crackdown, according to reports.

SCOTUS Rules Trump Can’t Deploy National Guard Troops To Chicago

A new bill from Republican Senator Tom Cotton would protect National Guard troops from “deranged individuals” who attack or spit on them while they are on duty.
Cotton’s bill would create a 15-foot buffer zone around any National Guard member performing official duties, his office told The Daily Wire. The intent would be to shield troops from people trying to intimidate, harass, touch, or spit on them.
“The brave Arkansans who serve in our National Guard should be protected from deranged individuals. My bill ensures that anyone who attempts to intimidate or harass a Guardsmen will face the full force of the law,” Cotton told The Daily Wire.
Cotton’s legislation comes as President Donald Trump has deployed National Guard troops to cities across the country from Memphis to Los Angeles to assist in federal operations.
The bill, known as the ‘‘National Guard Protective Zone Act,” would create a federal misdemeanor for those who enter the protective zone to intimidate, harass, or impede a troop. It would also create a felony for anyone who spits on or throws an object at a National Guard member while on duty. That would be punishable by up to five years in prison.
“Nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit activity protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States that is conducted outside a posted protective zone,” the legislation reads.
Since being deployed to Washington, D.C., National Guard troops have faced protests and violence. Just before Thanksgiving, two National Guard troops were shot, with one dying while another was critically injured. The man suspected of shooting the troops was an Afghan refugee who entered the country under former President Joe Biden.

In another high-profile incident, a man threw a subway sandwich at a Customs and Border Patrol officer during part of the Trump administration’s law enforcement surge to the nation’s capital.
On Wednesday, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals said the Trump administration could keep the National Guard deployed to the district while litigation plays out.

Circuit unanimously issued a stay in favor of our National Guard deployment to Washington, DC,” Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/2001375227465322966">said</a>. “Our federal surge in DC has saved countless lives, removed hundreds of illegal guns off the streets, and led to a dramatic drop in crime in our nation’s capital city.”

The consequences of the botched Afghanistan withdrawal during the Biden administration have made their way to the American homeland after the deadly National Guard shooting in Washington, D.C., according to many Republicans, including Senator Jim Banks (R-IN), who was deployed to Afghanistan while serving in the Navy.
Shortly following the suspect’s identification as an Afghan national, Banks immediately called for proper vetting of individuals who came into the country as refugees following the withdrawal from Afghanistan. In a Thursday interview with The Daily Wire on Capitol Hill, Banks elaborated on why he “predicted that this would happen.&#8221;
“If you flood the country with unvetted Afghan nationals, we knew that there would be a large population within that group who were aligned with terrorists, and now this is playing out and proving to be true,” Banks said.
“Go back and vet all of them,” the senator said, further adding that the role of Congress should be to support the president and “fund the effort to do that.&#8221; The &#8220;One Big Beautiful Bill Act,&#8221; which passed in July, paved the way for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hire thousands of agents, along with providing funding for immigration and border security measures.
“And all of them who weren&#8217;t properly vetted — every single one of them — should be vetted. And if they shouldn&#8217;t be in the United States, then they should be sent back to where they came from,&#8221; the Republican said.
“I served in Afghanistan, I served with translators and Afghan troops and others, and I can just tell you, not every single one of them should be allowed to come to the United States,” Banks continued.
“They should be vetted. Just because they did something in Afghanistan during the war that &#8230; aligned with America, doesn&#8217;t mean that they support American values, and no one should &#8230; be allowed to come to America that doesn&#8217;t love America,” he added.
Banks noted that the country&#8217;s immigration woes are arguably what won President Donald Trump a second term in 2024, adding that “he has a mandate to do what he’s doing.”
Millions of people were let into the U.S. through asylum and parole programs, as well as by illegally crossing the southern border, during the Biden administration. Roughly 14 million immigrants &#8220;unauthorized&#8221; to be in the U.S. were in the country as of 2023, according to the <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/race-and-ethnicity/2025/08/21/u-s-unauthorized-immigrant-population-reached-a-record-14-million-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pew Research Center</a>. As for Afghans who entered after the withdrawal, they came in through Operation Allies Welcome and other programs.
The suspect in the deadly National Guard shooting last month in Washington, D.C., Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly worked alongside the CIA as a member of &#8220;Zero Unit&#8221; in Afghanistan. Rahmanullah has also dealt with mental health issues since coming to the United States.
The deadly shooting killed Sarah Beckstrom and seriously injured another National Guard member, Andrew Wolfe, who remains in serious condition, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/02/us/national-guard-andrew-wolfe">reported</a>.
Following the National Guard tragedy, Trump ordered the immigration processes for individuals from 19 “high-risk” nations halted to allow for “a thorough re-review process,” according to a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services policy memorandum from Dec. 2.
&#8220;In light of identified concerns and the threat to the American people, USCIS has determined that a comprehensive re-review, potential interview, and re-interview of all aliens from high-risk countries of concern who entered the United States on or after January 20, 2021 is necessary,&#8221; the memo stated. &#8220;Lastly, USCIS may, when appropriate, extend this review and re-interview process to aliens who entered the United States outside of this timeframe.&#8221;
