Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power after Hurricane Francine made landfall in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/louisiana" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Louisiana</a> on Wednesday, bringing torrential winds and rain. 
As of Thursday morning, Francine had been <a href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT1+shtml/121142.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">downgraded</a> to a tropical storm, and there were an <a href="https://poweroutage.us" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated</a> 391,159 customers without power in Louisiana and 64,247 without power in Mississippi. The storm system is expected to move through Louisiana on Thursday and impact other southern states. 
Francine made landfall as a category 2 hurricane at 5:00 p.m. local time in the southern Louisiana Parish of Terrebonne on Wednesday. Its maximum winds were up to 100 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center, and hit Morgan City hard with rain and wind. 
&#8220;It&#8217;s a little bit worse than what I expected to be honest with you,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hurricane-francine-louisiana-power-outages-wind-rain-flooding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Morgan City Sheriff Alvin Cockerham, according to CBS. &#8220;I pulled all my trucks back to the station; it&#8217;s too dangerous to be out there in this.”
In New Orleans, Miles Crawford <a href="https://www.wdsu.com/article/live-tv-rescue-hurricane-francine-new-orleans/62165066" target="_blank" rel="noopener">helped</a> save a man stuck in a truck submerged in water. He used a hammer to break open the vehicle&#8217;s window and helped pull the man out of the truck after going into the flooded street. 
A flash flood emergency was declared Wednesday in New Orleans as it was hit with six to eight inches of rain.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday morning that Francine will turn north in the next day or so and start slowing down. 
“On the forecast track, the center of Francine will move over central and northern portions of Mississippi through early Friday,” it said in an update. “Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 35 mph (55 km/h)  with higher gusts. Continued weakening is forecast, and Francine is expected to become a post-tropical cyclone later today.”
The storm is also expected to bring heavy rain to Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. 
“Francine is expected to bring storm total rainfall of 3 to 6 inches across portions of Mississippi, eastern Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. Localized amounts up to 10 inches are possible within rain bands over portions of central and northern Alabama and over the Florida Panhandle. This rainfall could lead to locally considerable flash and urban flooding,” NOAA said.

Illegal immigration could cost Mississippi more than $100 million every year, a new report from the state’s auditor reveals.
The report, from Mississippi State Auditor Shad White, addresses the costs of illegal immigration for the broader country before delving into the ways illegal immigration places a financial burden on Mississippi’s education, healthcare, and public safety systems. The investigation comes as polling indicates that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/economy-immigration-remain-top-concerns-for-voters-poll-finds">immigration is a top issue</a> for voters heading into the presidential election.
“Just last week, an <a href="https://darkhorsepressnow.com/man-charged-with-rape-of-10-year-old-in-pontotoc-county/">illegal immigrant was arrested</a> in North Mississippi for allegedly raping a 10-year-old boy twice,” State Auditor Shad White told The Daily Wire. “Every state is a border state now, and our new report shows how much state taxpayers are spending thanks to the open border.”
“Illegal immigration creates a financial burden for taxpayers across the country, but the cost of illegal immigration is not borne solely by the federal government,” the report explains, also noting that an estimated 22,000 illegal immigrants reside in the state. “Taxpayers from each state—including Mississippi—must face the reality of increased spending as a result of crisis-level illegal immigration.”
Mississippi’s healthcare system is hit particularly hard by illegal immigration, with the report estimating that the state spends a whopping $77 million on healthcare for illegal immigrants and their children every year. The report estimates the figure with data on the number of illegal immigrants in the state, their rate of health insurance, and their use of emergency medical services. It also found that Mississippi spends $4 million every year to pay for births to illegal immigrants, whose children are then designated as American citizens.
“Children born to illegal immigrant parents are citizens of the United States and immediately eligible to apply for Medicaid,” the report explains. “Given the incentive for hospitals to generate revenue for services provided, many of these children are likely enrolled in Mississippi’s Medicaid program.”
The state auditor’s report indicates that illegal immigration poses a massive financial burden on the Mississippi education system as well.
“In K-12 spending alone, in total, Mississippi taxpayers likely pay $25 million to educate illegal immigrants each year,” it reads, also noting that an estimated 2,500 illegal immigrants are currently enrolled in the state&#8217;s K-12 education system. “This estimate does not include the cost to educate the US-citizen children born to illegal immigrants, which is difficult to estimate given the state’s inability to collect citizenship data for students and their families.”
The sum was driven up in part by the increased costs associated with providing additional instruction to those who qualify as English Language Learners.
Mississippi&#8217;s public safety system also incurs additional costs because of illegal immigration, with the report estimating that “Mississippi taxpayers will spend at least $1.7 million annually incarcerating illegal immigrants.”
“This estimate does not include the cost of the extra burden law enforcement agencies face while policing Mississippi streets as a result of illegal immigration,” White’s report goes on to read. “The presence of illegal immigrants can strain local law enforcement agencies, which may lack the resources to effectively manage the increased workload. Additionally, the need for specialized training for officers to handle immigration-related issues can divert resources away from other critical public safety needs.”
The report also notes that an estimated 22.1 million illegal immigrants lived in the United States as of 2016 <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0201193">according to a study</a> performed by researchers at Yale and MIT. That number is expected to have increased under the Biden-Harris administration, which has presided over an unprecedented crisis on the southern border.
Over <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2455010/illegal-border-crossers-total-over-10-million-since-biden-inauguration/">10 million</a> people have crossed the border under President Joe Biden, with an estimated <a href="https://cis.org/Arthur/Blockbuster-House-Report-Reveals-How-Badly-Bidens-Broken-Our-Immigration-System">1.7 million illegal immigrant gotaways recorded</a> since he was inaugurated in 2021. There were 415,000 total reported gotaways for 2018, 2019, and 2020 under the Trump administration.

One of the most important principles in life is the idea of cause and effect. Children start mastering the concept at around 18 months. A toddler might drop a block on his foot, and very quickly realize that the block caused him to feel pain. He won&#8217;t assume that the television across the room had somehow hurt him. He won&#8217;t blame the neighborhood cat. And in the future, as a result of this deduction, the toddler might think twice about dropping a block on his foot.
In politics, for various reasons, cause and effect can be difficult for some people to figure out. Sometimes it&#8217;s because life is complicated. Sometimes it&#8217;s because of all the propaganda people are subjected to. And sometimes it&#8217;s because people just aren&#8217;t that bright.
That would explain the <a href="https://x.com/realtoriabrooke/status/1816993762964631590" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scene</a> that took place the other day in Brooklyn, where there was a massive protest against the shelters for illegal aliens that have popped up all over the city. You might have seen the footage on social media. The protesters said they were shocked by all of the violence and mayhem these &#8220;migrants&#8221; have brought to their community, apparently oblivious to the fact that they voted for exactly this outcome. Of course, there are similar scenes playing out all over the country.
But even when you take into account all of these factors — the propaganda, partisan politics, et cetera — it&#8217;s still hard to come to terms with what&#8217;s happening right now in Jackson, Mississippi. Politicians and black activists in Jackson have just made it clear that they have no understanding of causation whatsoever. This basic concept completely eludes them. It&#8217;s not simply that they&#8217;re blinded by politics. Instead it appears that, like infants, these activists do not comprehend that certain actions naturally lead to certain results. And it&#8217;s worth exploring what&#8217;s happening in Jackson in some detail because it has implications for the whole country, including the presidential race.
Here&#8217;s the background. There&#8217;s a Texaco gas station in Jackson <a href="https://www.wlbt.com/2024/07/29/community-protests-jackson-gas-station-be-shut-down/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">located</a> on a street called Medgar Evers Boulevard. And recently there&#8217;s been a lot of crime near the gas station — including several homicides and shootings this year. In response to this crisis, the solution that politicians and activists have come up with is not to blame the criminals. It&#8217;s not to hire more police officers and increase patrols. Instead, their response has been to blame the Texaco gas station.
And now these politicians — including a councilman named Kenneth Stokes — are calling for the gas station to shut down. In fact, Stokes has said he&#8217;ll bring a vote of &#8220;no confidence&#8221; against the city&#8217;s law department for refusing to have the gas station declared a public nuisance. Watch:

As the man in the video said, &#8220;If you&#8217;re providing a business that you see is detrimental to the community, and that your business is causing people to lose their lives, then you should have the integrity of a human being to say, you need to shut this down.&#8221;
In other words, the Texaco gas station is causing people to shoot each other. The gas station — a collection of snacks and pumps distributing gasoline &#8211; is &#8220;causing people to lose their lives.&#8221; Therefore the local councilman is holding rallies to get the place shut down.

When I first saw this story I had to check if there was something I was missing, because I figured this can&#8217;t possibly be the full story. Is the Texaco gas station executing its customers when they walk inside? Do they have guards posted at the doors who shoot you in the head as soon as you enter the place? If so, I totally agree that they need to shut it down. I am completely against that business practice. If I went to the gas station and it tried to murder me, I would be cranky pretty upset. That’s fodder for a bad Yelp review, no doubt. No more than two stars.
But after looking into it, I can conclusively say that these are crimes being committed by community members at — and against — this gas station. So the real problem in Jackson, Mississippi is that so many people in that community are violent criminals. 
The rush to avoid blame and accountability is so extreme that now they’re robbing businesses and then turning around to the business and blaming the business for being robbed. We&#8217;ve seen this kind of thing a few other times — for example, the politicians in Minnesota and other major cities who have <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/democrats-ignore-criminals-blame-car-companies-skyrocketing-auto-thefts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blamed</a> car manufacturers for making their cars too easy to steal. But this is a whole other level of delusion that we&#8217;re seeing in Jackson.
Now, I can’t help but compare the situation in Jackson to what I’ve experienced in my own life. Before we moved to Nashville four years ago, we lived in a small blue collar town in Pennsylvania. We had a local gas station that doubled as the town&#8217;s supermarket. People used to park their cars outside, leave the keys in the car with the car running and the doors unlocked, and stroll back out 15 minutes later with a bag of groceries and a coffee, and their car would still be there. So how is it that a gas station in one town is so safe that you can leave your keys in an unlocked car, while in another town you can&#8217;t fill up your tank without getting shot? And it’s not just about gas stations, obviously. 
The violent crime rate all across Jackson is extremely high. Jackson is <a href="https://usafacts.org/articles/which-states-have-the-highest-murder-rates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more dangerous</a> than 97% of all the cities in America. It is among the least safe places you can live. There are cities in third world countries safer than Jackson. By comparison, and for the record, in the town where I lived the violent crime rate was less than half of the national average. Property crimes were about a third of the national average. It was very safe. So again the question: why is one so safe and the other not? Forget about where I lived. Jackson is in the 97th percentile for crime. You could compare it to almost any town and the comparison will be very unfavorable for Jackson. Why is that? Can any politician in Jackson answer that question? 
Well, we all know where the answer starts, except we aren’t supposed to say it out loud. Every single person reading right now is thinking the same thing, but you aren’t supposed to say it. The population of Jackson is 80% black. You might know nothing about Jackson at all, but just based on the crime stats, you already made assumptions about the racial demographics — and your assumptions were right. Indeed, if you look at any town in America and see that it has a predominantly black population, you can assume that the crime rate is probably pretty high. And you will almost always be correct. We all know that. But we aren’t supposed to say it. Which is very unfortunate because it prevents us from asking the next question: why is that the case? Why is crime so prevalent in black communities? 
There isn’t one single answer to that question, but there is one major, overwhelmingly significant answer that we must begin with. The fatherless rate in the black population in Jackson (just as in cities all across the country) is more than 70%. You’ve read stats like that before so it might not really sink in, but really think about that. More than 70%. We are rapidly approaching a point where married parents and intact families simply don’t exist in Jackson — or cities like it — at all. 
In fact, the fatherless problem is so pervasive in Jackson and other cities in the state that the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/unmarried/unmarried.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">out-of-wedlock birth rate</a> in all of Mississippi is now over 50%. A child in Mississippi is more likely to be born to an unmarried mother than to a married one. It&#8217;s not possible to have a functioning society with statistics like that. It&#8217;s a guaranteed recipe for crime, violence, dysfunction, and chaos.

There is no solution to the problems facing black people that doesn&#8217;t begin with addressing this issue. It is not possible to have a productive and worthwhile conversation about the plight of black community in this country if that conversation does not revolve around the fact that the black community, generally speaking, has given up on the nuclear family. Politicians — like the one currently running for president on the Democratic ticket — will never talk about it though, as much as they claim to be voices for that community. For Democrats, any criticism or uncomfortable observation of black communities — even if it&#8217;s well-intentioned and completely reasonable and absolutely necessary in order to solve any of the problems — is tantamount to donning a white hood. 
The inevitable result is that black communities will continue to stagnate and devolve into more needless violence. That&#8217;s obviously a very bad outcome that will ruin millions of lives. But really, the problem is even worse than that. This attitude is so cancerous that it&#8217;s now destroying our national political discourse too.
If you doubt that, take a look at what happened yesterday at the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago. (Yes, apparently we have segregated associations for black journalists, just like Kamala&#8217;s campaign has racially segregated Zoom calls.) Donald Trump showed up, knowing it would be hostile territory. He didn&#8217;t duck the event, like Kamala — who still hasn&#8217;t answered a single serious question from a single journalist since becoming her party&#8217;s presumptive nominee. 
And then as soon as the event began, the ABC journalist didn&#8217;t ask Trump a policy question. She didn&#8217;t talk about inflation or interest rates or the price of housing or any issue that actually matters to a single American. Instead, she started barking about how Donald Trump is racist because he&#8217;s said mean things about some people who happen to be black. Watch:

What&#8217;s going on here is pretty clear. This woman knows that Donald Trump has called white people a lot of insulting names. Everyone&#8217;s well aware of what Trump has said about Rosie O&#8217;Donnell, or Jeb Bush, or Rand Paul, or John Bolton, or dozens and dozens of other people who happen to be white. There isn&#8217;t a single person on the planet who thinks that Donald Trump only uses nasty names to refer to black people.
What&#8217;s happening here, pretty explicitly, is that the moderator is saying Trump is racist because he treats black people the same way he treats white people. He insults them the same way he insults everyone else who crosses him, and she can&#8217;t tolerate that. She&#8217;s demanding special status for black people. She wants to completely shut down any criticism of black D.A.&#8217;s, black politicians, and black journalists. This is the same mindset that gets gas stations blamed for shootings in black neighborhoods. It is the pathological avoidance of criticism. And now it&#8217;s being used to derail debate during a presidential election.
This is not some fringe ABC reporter I&#8217;m talking about. This is a mainstream view now on the Left. 
I recently came across this post on Twitter, which had millions of views and tens of thousands of likes and supportive comments. There’s been a lot of commentary like this on social media and in corporate media since Trump’s interrogation by the black journalists. This is just <a href="https://x.com/KirkWrites79/status/1818727863375597637">one example</a>: &#8220;If you are Black… and watched how Trump talked to those Black journalists and women and you still want to vote for him. Please keep your Black ass away from me. Thanks.&#8221;
In other words, he&#8217;s saying very clearly that Trump should have treated that black journalist differently from any other journalist. Even though she was being as hostile and unprofessional as she could&#8217;ve possibly been, Trump should&#8217;ve pretended otherwise, because she&#8217;s black and it&#8217;s not possible for black people to do anything wrong whatsoever. That&#8217;s what a critical mass of people on the Left now believe.
It&#8217;s also apparently the view of Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah. In response to the event, she <a href="https://x.com/KarenAttiah/status/1818717282702438470" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a>: &#8220;I am so angry right now. N.A.B.J., this was a colossal mistake.&#8221;
This is how you know that Donald Trump completely neutralized their attacks, by the way. If it had gone badly for Trump, they&#8217;d be glad he was invited. But it went well for Trump because instead of falling for the trap, he called it out. He treated black people the same way he&#8217;d treat anyone else. He was honest. He wasn’t tip toeing around or walking on egg shells.
This is what we need now — we’ve needed it for a long time. A radical, straight forward honesty — an honesty totally unconcerned with coloring inside the PC lines. When people aren&#8217;t allowed to say the truth, they&#8217;ll very quickly start believing in absurdities — like the idea that gas stations cause crime.
Only a party that wants more crime and more violence would push a lie so absurd. 
And only a party that wants to push even more deception and propaganda, even when reality is staring all of us in the face, would ever dream of installing a candidate as obviously fraudulent as Kamala Harris.

At least one sponsor has withdrawn from the 2024 Olympic games after the games’ opening ceremony featured a blasphemous display of the Last Supper.
C Spire, a telecommunications and technology company based in Mississippi, announced on Saturday that it was pulling advertising from the Olympics after the opening ceremony <a href="https://x.com/Harry__Faulkner/status/1816920155399602352" target="_blank" rel="noopener">featured</a> a scene of the Last Supper, but with drag queens playing the roles of Jesus and the apostles.
“We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics. C Spire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics,” the tech company said in a post on social media.

Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota, a popular Catholic commentator, condemned the Olympics display as a “gross mockery” and urged Christians to &#8220;make our voices heard.&#8221;
“You know, I love the Olympics, so I turn on the opening ceremony of the Olympics. What do I see now … but this gross mockery of the Last Supper,” Barron said in a video posted to social media. “France felt, evidently, as it’s trying to put its best cultural foot forward, the right thing to do is to mock this very central moment in Christianity where Jesus at his last supper gives His body and blood in anticipation of the cross. And so it’s presented though as this sort of gross, flippant mockery.”
“I think, folks, what’s interesting here is this deeply secularist, postmodern society knows who its enemy is, they’re naming it, and we should believe them,” he continued. “They’re telling us who they are. We should believe them. But, furthermore, we Christians, we Catholics should not be sheepish. We should resist. We should make our voices heard.”

Federal law enforcement officials raided a business in Mississippi on Wednesday owned by Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens.
FBI agents seized evidence at Downtown Cigar Company in Jackson, which is owned by Owens — who is <a href="https://capitalresearch.org/article/living-room-pundits-guide-to-soros-district-attorneys/">backed</a> by Democrat megadonor George Soros.
WLBT <a href="https://www.wlbt.com/2024/05/22/fbi-raids-business-owned-by-hinds-county-district-attorney-jody-owens/">reported</a> that the FBI also raided Owens&#8217; offices at the Hinds County Courthouse.

On University of North Carolina&#8217;s Chapel Hill campus, a group of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gofundme-set-up-to-fund-rager-for-frat-boys-who-defended-american-flag-on-unc-campus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fraternity boys</a> fought back when anti-Israel protesters attempted to replace an American flag with a Palestinian flag. Pi Kappa Phi member Guillermo Estrada explained, &#8220;My fraternity brother and others ran over to hold it up, in order for it not to touch the ground. People began throwing water bottles at us, rocks, sticks, calling us profane names. We stood for an hour defending the flag so many fight to protect.&#8221;

Mississippi sent a cease-and-desist letter to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/blackrock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BlackRock</a> on Tuesday accusing the financial asset manager of misleading investors about its environmental, social, and governance policies and threatening to level a steep fine on the firm. 
The letter, from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mississippi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mississippi</a> Secretary of State Michael Watson, <a href="https://www.sos.ms.gov/press/mississippi-secretary-state-issues-order-against-blackrock-alleged-securities-fraud-related" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> that BlackRock may face a multimillion-dollar financial penalty if it does not comply with the state’s demands. BlackRock, which manages over $10 trillion in assets, has faced increasing scrutiny from Republican officials over its investing policies, especially in relation to its links to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/financial-giants-pull-14-trillion-from-climate-group-that-pressures-companies-to-take-action-on-climate-change" target="_blank" rel="noopener">climate activist</a> groups. 
“BlackRock has made and continues to make untrue statements of material fact, and to omit material facts to make its statements not misleading, to investors and potential investors in Mississippi,” a copy of the <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2024/03/Final-CD-BR.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> obtained by The Daily Wire says. “These misrepresentations pertain to BlackRock’s provision of investment services, especially its involvement in pushing Environmental, Social, and Governance (‘ESG’) factors on portfolio companies. Additionally, many of BlackRock’s acts, practices, and courses of business operate or would operate as a fraud or deceit upon investors and potential investors in Mississippi.”
Watson said that the letter and notice of intent to impose administrative penalty was part of Mississippi&#8217;s efforts to go after politicized investment companies. 
“Investment companies will not push their political agenda on Mississippians, especially through fraudulent and deceptive means,” Watson said. “All citizens should have the opportunity to make informed and educated decisions when investing their hard-earned money. If not, our office will hold these bad actors accountable.”
The letter alleges that there are two categories of false and misleading statements made by BlackRock to investors. The first claims that while BlackRock says it doesn’t use all funds for ESG purposes it has already committed “to use all assets under management to advance the environmental agenda of reducing carbon emissions to ‘net zero.’”
The second category includes statements from BlackRock indicating that ESG-related investing brings positive financial results. Watson’s letter disputes this saying that is misleading “because the consideration of ESG factors does not provide an indication of better financial returns or current or future risk profiles.”
BlackRock has <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/finance-and-economy/2941273/mississippi-slaps-blackrock-cease-and-desist-order-esg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> to the letter, saying that Mississippi&#8217;s allegations against it were untrue.

“Many policymakers and government officials have ideas on how we should invest our clients’ assets,” BlackRock said. “We are always bound to invest consistent with our clients’ choices, their best financial interests, and applicable law. Our only agenda is maximizing risk-adjusted returns for the funds our clients choose to invest in.”
BlackRock, headed up by CEO Larry Fink, has walked back from some of its climate commitments, but has still faced calls to fully abandon ESG policies. 
“Larry Fink and BlackRock continue to pretend that the only time they engage in ESG, it is with permission of the shareholders, but in reality, ESG policies have seeped into every facet of BlackRock&#8217;s asset management,” Will Hild of Consumers&#8217; Research said in a <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/mississippi-hits-blackrock-with-cease-desist-threatens-massive-fine-over-esg-policies">statement</a> to FOX Business on Wednesday. “They&#8217;ve been lying to their customers, and states like Mississippi are not going to allow this to continue.”

At least six state capitol buildings across the country were evacuated after receiving bomb threats Wednesday morning. 
State capitol buildings in Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, and Montana all reported bomb threats, prompting investigations by state police and local authorities. Each of the threats appeared to be a hoax email sent to numerous government employees claiming explosives had been placed in the capitol buildings. 
“While everyone is safe, KSP has asked everyone to evacuate the state Capitol and is investigating a threat received by the Secretary of State’s Office,” Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear <a href="https://twitter.com/GovAndyBeshear/status/1742568209121730634">wrote</a> in a post on X. “We are aware of similar threats made to other offices across the country.”
A spokesman for Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams said that the threat was sent to multiple secretaries of state across the country as a “mass email,” the Lexington Herald-Leader <a href="https://www.kentucky.com/news/politics-government/article283779473.html">reported</a>. Adams’ office added that the email claimed bombs had been placed in state capitols. 
The Michigan State Capitol <a href="https://twitter.com/MIStateCapitol/status/1742571070509535685">posted</a> on X that the building would be closed for the remainder of Wednesday as authorities continued investigating. 
&#8220;Out of an abundance of caution, the Capitol will remain closed for the rest of the day,&#8221; Michigan State Police spokeswoman Lori Dougovito said, <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2024/01/03/state-capitol-evacuated-due-to-safety-and-security-concerns/72095198007/">according</a> to The Detroit News.
Michigan House Republican Floor Leader Bryan Posthumus said in a statement to The Daily Wire that he and his team were in his office &#8220;when security informed us of the threat and evacuated us quickly and professionally.&#8221;
&#8220;So far there’s no cause for greater alarm as we turn the building over for law enforcement to sweep,&#8221; Posthumus added. &#8220;This is unfortunately a reality for our modern world but I applaud the quick and effective work of the first responders and capitol security.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/17/james-bidens-dealmaking-caught-fbi-tapes-unrelated-bribery-probe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a> detailed how the FBI caught James Biden on tape in 2007 chatting about possible deals with associates of Mississippi trial attorney Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, including the creation of a new consulting firm. By 2008, in the months before Joe Biden was elected vice president, Scruggs and his associates <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/03/business/03scruggs.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded guilty</a> to charges in a scheme to pay a $40,000 bribe to a state judge and they served prison time.
Neither Joe Biden nor James Biden ever faced accusations of wrongdoing or charges in the case, emphasized the report, which relied on interviews, court records, and materials collected by &#8220;<a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/190714/the-fall-of-the-house-of-zeus-by-curtis-wilkie/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Fall of the House of Zeus&#8221;</a> author Curtis Wilkie. The FBI declined to comment on the report when pressed by The Daily Wire.

James Biden, along with Joe Biden&#8217;s son Hunter, has been subpoenaed for a deposition. President Biden, who is seeking re-election next year, has accused House Republicans of &#8220;attacking me with lies&#8221; and &#8220;choosing to waste time on this baseless political stunt&#8221; that is &#8220;not supported by facts.&#8221;
The ties between Scruggs and the Bidens stretch back several years, per the Washington Post report, including a boat trip with James Biden and flying Joe Biden on his private plane to a fundraiser. Scruggs paid a firm run by James Biden and his wife Sara $100,000 in 1998 for advice on passing a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1998/06/18/us/tobacco-bill-overview-senate-drops-tobacco-bill-with-98-revival-unlikely-clinton.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tobacco bill</a>. Though Joe Biden, then a U.S. senator from Delaware, threw his support behind the legislation, it <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1998/06/18/us/tobacco-bill-overview-senate-drops-tobacco-bill-with-98-revival-unlikely-clinton.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">did not pass</a> through Congress.
Paul Fishman, a lawyer for James and Sara Biden, told the news outlet, &#8220;Jim Biden’s consulting work has never involved speaking with or providing access to his brother for this or any other client.&#8221; Scruggs reportedly claimed he did not know whether James Biden discussed the tobacco legislation with his brother. &#8220;But I hope he did,&#8221; he added. And though Scruggs insisted Jim Biden was &#8220;never untoward about his influence,&#8221; Scruggs conceded he &#8220;probably wouldn’t have hired him if he wasn’t the senator’s brother.&#8221;

A Mississippi woman whose son disappeared more than a year ago only recently learned that he had never been missing and that authorities had found him quickly and buried him.
On May 20, 2022, Jonathan David Hankins hugged and kissed his mother, Gretchen, goodbye before saying he was leaving for a weekend trip with his friends. Jonathan, a meth addict, promised to come home for Sunday dinner and was known to leave for several days at a time, barred from entering the home while using the stimulant.
But Gretchen, along with Jonathan’s teenage daughter, became concerned that something had gone wrong, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jonathan-david-hankins-missing-buried-jackson-mississippi-rcna128735?cid=sm_npd_nn_fb_ma&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;_branch_match_id=1133745504221936325&amp;_branch_referrer=H4sIAAAAAAAAA8soKSkottLXz0tKzkstL9ZLLCjQy8nMy9Z3jszJz65ILit0SwIAS9EVJiQAAAA%3D" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Gretchen reported her son missing to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office nearly two months later, on July 14. A search <a href="https://www.facebook.com/RankinCountySO/posts/pfbid02CRd2pfLEiNsXqGd5t5HVYbhvKv477bHwcKQFiiARdC1cXoDPuzqP4FK5yJ5ixF2pl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was announced</a> on Facebook two weeks later, and the case was shared with local media outlets. Volunteers <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MurkyWatersSearchandRecovery/posts/pfbid0dFnEFagK7ZJhUoL1zHpKoZUPkqm4y56RLG7pqf3XWXyvrYT3xRKcswnyJmvWMPUbl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">searched</a> for him in the surrounding waterways but came up empty.
For more than a year, Gretchen contacted the sheriff’s office every few weeks asking for information about her son but was always told they had nothing new to report.

“It was pain, mental pain, because I couldn’t imagine where he was at,” Gretchen told NBC. “I just couldn’t.”
During that time, Gretchen held out hope that her son was still alive, but that hope was shattered when NBC <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/dexter-exhumed-jackson-mississippi-final-indignity-rcna124870" target="_blank" rel="noopener">began investigating</a> people who were buried in a Hinds County pauper’s field without families being notified. The outlet combed through a register of recent burials, compared it to a list of missing people, and found Jonathan’s name, along with others, on both lists.
After confirming that it was, indeed, Gretchen’s son, the outlet visited her at her home on December 4 and shared the tragic news, along with what they had learned.
According to NBC, Jonathan had been found dead in a hotel room near Jackson, Mississippi, just three days after he said goodbye to Gretchen. NBC didn’t report the cause of death.
Investigators verified his identity but neither the Hinds County Coroner’s office nor the Jackson Police Department informed his family. He was buried in a grave marked with the number 645.
“It feels like they threw him away like trash,” Jonathan’s aunt, Jennie Jones, told the outlet. “No caring. No feeling.”
The Hinds County coroner’s office failed to notify families in two other cases, and the Jackson Police Department adopted new protocols for notifications last month.
JPD spokeswoman Melissa Faith Payne told the outlet that it was the coroner’s responsibility to contact Gretchen.
“From the scene, the victim’s body was immediately turned over to the Hinds County Coroner’s office for further investigation, including an autopsy,” she told the outlet in a statement. “To this day, the Jackson Police Department has had no further communication with the Hinds County Coroner’s office concerning this case. We were never notified of the victim’s cause of death or identity.”

Mississippi Republican Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tate-reeves" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tate Reeves</a> fended off a challenge from Democrat Brandon Presley on Tuesday after weeks of media speculation that Democrats might take the governor’s mansion for the first time in 20 years. 
Reeves defeated Presley by about 39,000 votes, taking 51.8% of the vote. Presley <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/08/us/politics/tate-reeves-mississippi-presley.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conceded</a> around 11 p.m. CST on Tuesday. 
“This victory belongs to you,” Reeves said on Tuesday. “This victory is more than just who will occupy the governor’s mansion over the next four years. It’s really about the direction that our state will go over the next four years. Mississippi has momentum.”
Republican candidates for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mississippi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mississippi</a> lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and attorney general all won their races with around 60% of the vote.
During the campaign, Reeves tied Presley to President Joe Biden, whose approval rating remains low across the country.
&#8220;My opponent has outsourced his entire campaign to the Democratic National Committee,&#8221; Reeves <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/mississippi-election-governor-tate-reeves-brandon-presley" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> during a debate. &#8220;Joe Biden and his buddies have funded his campaign to the tune of 80% of the money that he has raised has come from California, New York, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C. It ain&#8217;t charity.&#8221;
Presley <a href="https://mississippitoday.org/2023/10/31/brandon-presley-outraised-tate-reeves-election/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised</a> about $5 million more than Reeves during the campaign, taking in $11.2 million to Reeve’s $6.2 million. 
Presley, a second cousin to musician Elvis Presley and member of the Mississippi Public Service Commission, said that his campaign had left no “stone unturned.”
“This is bigger than one man,” he said. “We can lose this race tonight recognizing good on the other side.”

During the campaign, Presley pointed to a $77 million welfare scandal in Mississippi <a href="https://apnews.com/article/welfare-scandal-mississippi-phil-bryant-brett-favre-172c836b2cbb13ac1c509782221c5976" target="_blank" rel="noopener">where</a> federal money intended for low-income people ended up with people and organizations not qualified to receive the aid. The money was misspent by the state&#8217;s Department of Human Services. 
In the days leading up to the election, many media outlets speculated that Presley might pull off an upset. In the end, Reeve’s margin of victory was similar to 2019 when he was first elected governor and won by about 42,000 votes.
