The Supreme Court’s ruling narrowing the scope of the Voting Rights Act is already prompting calls from Republicans to redraw congressional maps, a move that could create more GOP-friendly seats, particularly across the South.
In Tennessee, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) on Wednesday encouraged state lawmakers to reconvene and redraw district lines in a way that could flip a Democratic-held seat.
“I urge our state legislature to reconvene to redistrict another Republican seat in Memphis. It&#8217;s essential to cement [Donald Trump’s] agenda and the Golden Age of America,” Blackburn, who’s running to succeed Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee, posted to X following the decision.
“I’ve vowed to keep Tennessee a red state, and as Governor, I&#8217;ll do everything I can to make this map a reality,” she added.
Memphis is currently represented by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) in a heavily Democratic district.

The court’s 6-3 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais found that the state violated constitutional limits by drawing a majority-minority district predominantly on the basis of race. Writing for the majority, Justice Samuel Alito said Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act “was designed to enforce the Constitution — not collide with it,” adding that “lower courts have sometimes applied this Court’s […] precedents in a way that forces States to engage in the very race-based discrimination that the Constitution forbids.”
“The State’s attempt to satisfy the Middle District’s ruling, although understandable, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander,” Alito wrote.
The full implications of the ruling remain unclear, but it could open the door for challenges to similar race-based districts in other states.
In Alabama, Attorney General Steve Marshall, a Republican, <a href="https://www.alabamaag.gov/attorney-general-marshall-applauds-momentous-supreme-court-redistricting-decision/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the state would move quickly to ensure its maps &#8220;reflect the will of the people, not a racial quota system the Constitution forbids.&#8221;
&#8220;The Court rightly acknowledged that the South has made extraordinary progress, and that laws designed for a different era do not reflect the present reality,&#8221; Marshall stated.
Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves signaled even before the ruling that he was prepared to call a special session to redraw maps, particularly affecting the state’s deep blue 2nd Congressional District.
“It is a decision that could (and in my view should) forever change the way we draw electoral maps,” Reeves wrote last week.
In Georgia, Republican state Sen. <a href="https://x.com/DolezalForGA/status/2049508266175062141?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greg Dolezal</a> called on lawmakers to revisit district lines, arguing that the current maps should be redrawn to benefit Republicans.
“The last thing that Republicans need to do is be weak-kneed in this moment. This is a time to be bold. This is a time to be aggressive,” Dolezal, who’s running for lieutenant governor, said in a video.
Democrats, meanwhile, blasted the decision. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the court “just turned its back on one of the most sacred promises in American democracy—the promise that every voice counts.”
The ruling lands amid an already intensifying redistricting battle ahead of the 2026 midterms, with both parties seeking an edge in the fight for control of the House during the final stretch of President Donald Trump&#8217;s term.

After years on the run, one of Canada’s most wanted murder fugitives has been arrested in Mississippi by federal law enforcement after he illegally crossed into the United States. 
A federal and state task force captured fugitive Adrian Vincent Walker in Tupelo, Mississippi, on March 23 after the 30-year-old evaded Canadian law enforcement for nearly two years, landing on Canada’s top 25 most wanted list. He faces charges in Canada for murder and attempted murder. 
“Thanks to the brave men and women of ICE, one of Canada’s most wanted criminals is behind bars. This illegal alien was wanted for a murder in Canada,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis told The Daily Wire. “He is now facing charges for illegal entry into the U.S. and illegal possession of a firearm. DHS is grateful to our law enforcement officers and partners who took this illegal alien off of our streets and behind bars where he will finally face justice for his crimes.”

It is unclear when Walker illegally entered the United States, but Toronto Police <a href="https://www.tps.ca/media-centre/news-releases/65497/">said</a> he murdered 31-year-old Trevor Dalton John and wounded an unidentified woman on May 7, 2024. 
Under former President Joe Biden, illegal crossings at the northern border <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-crossings-are-spiking-at-the-northern-border">surged</a>, with thousands crossing from Canada into New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont. After coming into office, President Donald Trump took steps to pressure Canada into cracking down on illegal immigration into the United States and the trafficking of drugs and guns over the border. 
Walker previously spent three years behind bars in Canada for aggravated assault, according to the Department of Homeland Security. 
After his arrest on March 23, 2026, by a Homeland Security Investigations task force, Walker was charged with illegally entering the country and possession of a firearm by an alien. ICE has placed an immigration detainer on Walker so he will not be released after he faces his charges in the United States. 
“This was a serious case. A Canadian national, wanted for murder, entered our country illegally and was living in our midst. He even made a Canadian Most Wanted list. Seeking sanctuary in Mississippi is not a smart move,” <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndms/pr/violent-international-fugitive-arrested-lee-county-northern-district-mississippi">said</a> United States Attorney Scott Leary. “Those that continually criticize law enforcement are not in the arena; our agents and officers are, and the folks in our district can sleep soundly knowing law enforcement officers did their job.”

In a high-stakes legal challenge that could reshape American voting procedures, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has filed a <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/24/24-1260/395791/20260209131726304_Watson%20v.%20RNC%20-%20Red%20Brief.pdf">final brief</a> urging the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down a Mississippi law that allows mail-in ballots to be counted up to five days after Election Day.
The case, Watson v. Republican National Committee, centers on whether federal law requires voter ballots to be physically received by officials on the designated election day to count, rather than merely postmarked by that date.
At the heart of the RNC’s argument is a trio of federal statutes dating back to the 19th century. These laws mandate that the &#8220;day for the election&#8221; for the Presidency, Senate, and House be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
&#8220;When Congress designated a single &#8216;day for the election,&#8217; it set a deadline,&#8221; the RNC argues in its brief. &#8220;If a state law extends the election after that deadline, &#8216;it conflicts with&#8217; Congress’s timing decision, “and to that extent is void.”
The RNC asserts that an &#8220;election&#8221; is not merely the individual act of a voter marking a choice, but a public process that is only &#8220;consummated&#8221; when the state takes custody of the ballots. By allowing a five-day grace period for mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day, the RNC claims Mississippi is effectively extending the federal election beyond the period authorized by Congress.
The brief frames the issue as a matter of public trust, arguing that prolonged ballot receipt windows fuel national anxiety.
&#8220;These post-election receipt deadlines invite &#8216;the chaos and suspicions of impropriety that can ensue if thousands of absentee ballots flow in after election day and potentially flip the results of an election,'&#8221; the brief states.
The RNC highlights a growing divide in the American voting experience: while some states provide immediate results, others remain in a state of &#8220;limbo&#8221; for days or weeks. The brief argues that as long as ballots are still arriving at counting centers, &#8220;the election isn’t over&#8221; in any ordinary sense of the word.
The Republican plaintiffs point to the 1997 Supreme Court case Foster v. Love, which held that any state law conflicting with the uniform national election day is preempted by federal law. They further argue that for over a century, the historical consensus was that the &#8220;ballot box&#8221; closed on Election Day.
The RNC argues that modern &#8220;experiments&#8221; with late-arriving ballots are a radical departure from this tradition. They dismiss arguments that a ballot is &#8220;cast&#8221; the moment it is mailed, noting that U.S. Postal Service regulations theoretically allow senders to recall mail, meaning a vote isn&#8217;t truly final until the state has secured it.
A ruling in favor of the RNC would have immediate consequences far beyond Mississippi. Currently, 15 other states and the District of Columbia allow some form of post-election ballot receipt for the general public, while nearly 30 states permit it for military and overseas voters.
Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson has defended the law, arguing that &#8220;election&#8221; refers to the voters making their choice, not the administrative act of receipt. However, a unanimous panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals previously sided with the RNC, ruling that &#8220;the election concludes when the final ballots are received.&#8221;
The Supreme Court, which granted certiorari on November 10, 2025, is expected to hear oral arguments in early 2026, with a final decision likely by June.

The suspect accused of setting Mississippi&#8217;s oldest synagogue on fire admitted to starting the blaze because of the building&#8217;s &#8220;Jewish ties,&#8221; and even laughed about the horrific crime, according to an FBI <a href="https://forward.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1-1.pdf">affidavit</a>, saying, &#8220;he finally got them.&#8221;
The criminal complaint submitted by the FBI listed Stephen Spencer Pittman as the man who lit a fire inside Beth Israel Congregation and the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life in Jackson, Mississippi, over the weekend.
Security video shows a man pouring what appears to be gasoline inside the synagogue in the early hours of January 10, according to the affidavit.
Pittman&#8217;s father contacted the FBI, telling the agency his son admitted to the crime. Per the report, Pittman called the buildings he burned the &#8220;synagogue of Satan&#8221; and laughed as he described what he did. In his confession, he said he stopped at a gas station to get the fuel he used to start the fire, took his license plate off his car at the gas station, broke the windows of the synagogue with an axe, poured gas inside the building, then used a torch lighter to ignite the fire.
The confession was further verified by burns on Pittman&#8217;s body as well as text messages and map data that put Pittman at the center of the arson, per the affidavit.
Pittman texted his father before he started the fire. He sent a picture of the synagogue with the message &#8220;there&#8217;s a furnace in the back.&#8221; The suspect&#8217;s father &#8220;pleaded&#8221; with Pittman to come home, but his son was defiant and told his father he was due for a home run, and he &#8220;did his research.&#8221;
Pittman was quickly arrested and charged with maliciously damaging or destroying a building by means of fire or an explosive, per the report that was filed in the U.S. District Court in Mississippi on Monday.
The fire severely burned parts of the synagogue, including the library and administrative offices.

Two Torahs were destroyed in the fire, and five others were damaged. One of the Torahs that survived the fire over the weekend also survived the Holocaust and was stored in a glass case in the synagogue.
Jackson Fire Chief RaSean Thomas said the station&#8217;s hearts are with the Beth Israel congregation.
&#8220;We stand with this community and affirm that hate has no home here. Jackson is stronger when we stand together,&#8221; Thomas said.
Monday, yellow police tape still blocked off entrances to the synagogue building, which still had broken glass and soot everywhere, per the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/mississippi-synagogue-arson-jewish-south-0e489adc986bfaddd55662075bdb6443?taid=6965555fa772200001fb3976&amp;utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter">Associated Press</a>. The outlet reported that people had laid flowers on the ground at the building&#8217;s entrance.
Beth Israel is Mississippi&#8217;s only synagogue in Jackson. It has a history of being the target of hate crimes dating back to the 1960s when the KKK bombed the synagogue.
Antisemitic attacks have risen dramatically in recent years, from the Tree of Life shooting in 2018 to the Bondi Beach terror attack just before Christmas. The Anti-Defamation League reported over 9,000 documented antisemitic attacks in 2024 alone — the highest number on record since they began tracking such data in 1979.
Beth Israel is closed indefinitely as the synagogue is rebuilt.

The Club For Growth is launching a major effort to back a school choice proposal in Mississippi, the organization told The Daily Wire. 
The conservative organization launched an ad campaign on Sunday in support of the Mississippi Education Freedom Act, a bill that would create a scholarship program for low-income families to send their kids to private schools. The campaign urges Mississippians to contact lawmakers to support the bill, which was introduced last week by Republicans in the state House. 
“Mississippi kids shouldn’t be left behind by a system that doesn’t care about them. And parents shouldn’t be relegated to the sidelines. They know what school is best for their child. Tell Legislators: Do right by our kids. Pass education freedom,” Club for Growth <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFhdvbR98jM">urges</a> in the ad.  
The ad first launched on the Sunday political shows in Mississippi and will continue to air this week on Fox News and conservative radio shows. 
The <a href="https://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2026/dt/HB/0001-0099/HB0002IN.pdf">Mississippi Education Freedom Act</a> was introduced on January 7 by House Speaker Jason White and Representative Jansen Owen. The bill would create scholarship opportunities for up to 12,500 students to get state funding to help pay for the costs of attending private school or for other approved educational expenses. The scholarships would be prioritized for lower-income students and could become more broadly available over time. 
“Mississippi benefits when every child can access an education that fits his or her needs, circumstances and aspirations. The ‘Mississippi Education Freedom Act’, expands learning options for eligible students by allowing parents to direct state-supported funds to qualifying educational expenses and approved education service providers,” the bill’s text reads. “This act promotes academic achievement, parental choice, workforce readiness, and efficient stewardship of public funds.”
The bill would also make it easier for parents to transfer their students from one public school district to another and expand opportunities for charter schools. 
Education Secretary Linda McMahon came out in support of the Mississippi House proposal.
“I’m thrilled to see Mississippi advancing an ambitious school choice expansion in their 2026 session. Giving parents options is essential to improving education outcomes &amp; ensuring every child finds the learning environment that best fits their needs,” she <a href="https://x.com/EDSecMcMahon/status/2009735951510048973">said</a> in a post on X. 
As President Donald Trump has moved to dismantle the Department of Education, his administration has pushed for states to implement school choice measures that allow parents to get funding to send their kids to private schools.

The same Mississippi synagogue that was bombed in the 1960s by the Ku Klux Klan was under attack again over the weekend.
A suspect is in custody after officials said the person started a fire at the Beth Israel Congregation Saturday night in Jackson, Mississippi, shortly after 3 am. Jackson Mayor John Horhn said he is treating this act as an act of terrorism.
&#8220;Acts of antisemitism, racism and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson as a whole,&#8221; Horhn said. &#8220;Targeting people because of their faith, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation is morally wrong, un-American and completely incompatible with the values of this city.&#8221;
The library and administration offices in the synagogue were ruined in the fire, <a href="https://mississippitoday.org/2026/01/10/fire-damages-mississippi-largest-synagogue/">Mississippi Today</a> reported. The news outlet said that two Torahs were destroyed and five were heavily damaged by the flames. One of the Torahs unharmed in the fire was one that survived the Holocaust and was stored in a glass case in the synagogue. The fire also charred the synagogue’s Tree of Life, the plaque that honors and records special occasions for members of the congregation. No one was injured in the fire.
“We have already had outreach from other houses of worship in the Jackson area and greatly appreciate their support in this very difficult time,” congregation president, Zach Shemper, told Mississippi Today.
Officials haven&#8217;t formally classified the fire as a hate crime, nor have they released the name of the suspect in custody. The Jackson Fire Department&#8217;s chief fire investigator, Charles Felton, said firefighters had responded shortly after 3 a.m. to a possible church fire, and the arson investigators were called in after the fire division couldn&#8217;t immediately determine the origin of the fire.
Mississippi Today reports that members of the synagogue thought at first the fire had started due to lightning and thunderstorms that rolled through Mississippi, but no evidence was found to support that.
Other agencies supporting the Jackson Fire Department&#8217;s Arson Investigation Division include the Jackson Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
&#8220;I was at Beth Israel yesterday, and I saw firsthand how our partners stepped up,&#8221; Mayor Horhn said. &#8220;Their work led to the swift arrest of a suspect, and we&#8217;ll continue to support their efforts as the investigation moves forward.&#8221;
In 1967 the synagogue, which has been around since before the Civil War, was bombed by Ku Klux Klan members. Jackson&#8217;s mayor said he remembers that attack even though he was young.
&#8220;I do remember that the Jewish community and the African American community in those days formed alliances and partnerships to fight racism, to fight injustice, to fight mistreatment of citizens for whatever reason,” Horhn told Mississippi Today.
Antisemitic attacks have risen dramatically in recent years, from the Tree of Life shooting in 2018 to the Bondi Beach terror attack just before Christmas. The Anti-Defamation League reported over 9,000 documented anti-semitic attacks in 2024 alone — the highest number on record since they began tracking such data in 1979.

Mississippi’s Largest Synagogue Set Ablaze In Arson Attack, Suspect In Custody

A Christian evangelist&#8217;s battle with a Mississippi city over street preaching took center stage at the Supreme Court on Wednesday as the justices heard arguments that could have far-reaching consequences for Americans who want to defend their constitutional rights in federal court. 
The case <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/qp/24-00993qp.pdf">revolves</a> around whether 33-year-old Gabriel Olivier can challenge an ordinance from Brandon, Mississippi, that restricted street preaching in a public park outside of a local amphitheater. Olivier, who was convicted in 2021 of street preaching outside of the designated area, is now attempting to overturn the ordinance on First Amendment grounds. 
“This is a really important case,  for Christians specifically, because I noticed that all around the country, there&#8217;s always an exercise of free speech [that] does not seem to be cracked down on the way that Christians&#8217; free speech is nowadays,” Olivier told The Daily Wire in an interview. 
The city of Brandon argues that Olivier cannot challenge the ordinance in federal court because he has previously been convicted of violating it. Olivier says that he doesn’t want to revisit the 2021 conviction, for which he paid a fine, but wants to protect his right to share his faith in the future. 
During oral arguments on Wednesday, the justices seemed sympathetic to Olivier’s arguments that he should be able to seek relief in federal court despite his previous conviction. Nate Kellum, a lawyer with First Liberty Institute representing Olivier, told The Daily Wire that he was encouraged by the questions he heard from the justices. 
Kellum said that all he wants is for Olivier to have his day in court to argue against the ordinance and make an appeal for his First Amendment rights. 
“Everybody, regardless of their ideology and their belief, deserves their day in court,” Olivier said. “We&#8217;re just asking that people would continue to pray for us.”
The Trump administration is <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/media/1414041/dl">supporting</a> Olivier’s petition, as are a number of other conservative organizations. 
The ordinance implemented by Brandon, a suburb east of Jackson, restricts protest activity in the park surrounding the city&#8217;s amphitheater to a designated area when events are being held. 
“What the ordinance does is it puts him in a place where no one can hear him,” Kellum told The Daily Wire. “You can&#8217;t have a conversation.  You can&#8217;t hand out literature. If he preaches, he cannot be heard, and if he held up a sign, no one could read it. And so that seemed to be the whole idea, is that the city wanted to pass a law that separated him from his would-be audience.”

The city and some legacy outlets have attempted to suggest that Olivier shouted rude or inappropriate things during his previous outings at the park. 
“It&#8217;s patently false. And it seems to be an attempt to try to malign Gabe, malign his character,” Kellum said. “But if Gabe or really anyone else would say anything that would amount to fighting words or could be something that could lead to an altercation, there&#8217;s disorderly conduct ordinances.”
Olivier first went to the park in 2019, where he had productive conversations about his faith with others. But when he returned in 2021, the city had passed an ordinance against such evangelism. His passion for street evangelism comes from his own conversion ten years ago when he encountered a street preacher. 
“I see it very clearly as a command in scripture,” he said. “And so I choose to do that and exercise the rights that we have enjoyed here in America. And we would like for an opportunity to continue to fight for those rights to be upheld.”
Todd Butler, the attorney representing Brandon, said in a statement to The Daily Wire: &#8220;The City of Brandon was excited to present its position to the Court. The case before the Supreme Court is not about the constitutionality of the ordinance or religious expression. It is about whether a person who has been found guilty in criminal court may undermine his conviction through a civil tort lawsuit. The importance of this case cannot be overstated as it will impact cities across the country.&#8221;

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a case that will decide whether states can count mail-in ballots received after Election Day. 
The case could have widespread implications for the 2026 midterm elections, as 17 states currently allow mail-in ballots postmarked on or before Election Day to be counted several days after the election. Justices will <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/qp/24-01260qp.pdf">consider</a> “whether the federal election-day statutes preempt a state law that allows ballots that are cast by federal election day to be received by election officials after that day.”
The case comes after the Mississippi Republican Party and the Republican National Committee (RNC) sued Mississippi over a state law that allowed mail-in ballots to be counted if received up to five days after Election Day. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Mississippi, saying that federal law preempted state law and required all ballots to be received by Election Day. 
After the decision from the 5th Circuit, Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on the issue. Watson argued to the court that the 5th Circuit’s decision “defies statutory text, conflicts with this Court’s precedent, and — if left to stand — will have destabilizing nationwide ramifications.”
He said that as long as the ballots had been filled out by Election Day, they should be counted. Nineteen mostly blue states and the District of Columbia are supporting Mississippi in its efforts to reverse the lower court’s decision. 
The RNC had asked the Supreme Court not to take up the case, saying that the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision to side against Mississippi was correct and did not need review. 
“A post-election receipt deadline for mail ballots thus extends ‘the election’ beyond the ‘day’ set by Congress. Text, history, and precedent all confirm this conclusion,” the RNC wrote in a brief to the court. “In no sense is the ‘election’ over when ballots are still coming in.”
The RNC also noted that the policy of accepting ballots after Election Day could delay election results for weeks. 
“Many States can’t conclude their elections for weeks after election day because they’re still receiving ballots from voters. Weeks after the ‘day for the election’ has come and gone, the elections in those States continue,” they wrote in a brief. 
President Donald Trump has <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/preserving-and-protecting-the-integrity-of-american-elections/">called</a> for an end to mail-in voting, saying that it opens the door to election fraud. 
In an executive order earlier this year, Trump directed the Justice Department to take action against states that count “absentee or mail-in ballots received after Election Day in the final tabulation of votes for the appointment of Presidential electors and the election of members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives.”

Video shows a Mississippi crowd telling off a man who yelled &#8220;f*** the Jews&#8221; to Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who is Jewish.
Video posted online Friday shows a young male walking by and shouting &#8220;Hey, f*** the Jews! F*** you, Dave Portnoy&#8221; to the Barstool founder, who appears to be in the middle of one of his famed pizza review videos in Mississippi.
&#8220;Get out of here!&#8221; one person in the crowd shouted back, and another shouted, &#8220;Not cool.&#8221;
Portnoy told the male to come on camera, but video of the pair talking is inaudible.
&#8220;That was awful,&#8221; the crowd continued to react. One male even shouted, &#8220;Hey, f*** you, p****. F*** you!&#8221;
The male who shouted about &#8220;the Jews&#8221; appears to stick up his middle finger as he is escorted away from the incident.

Back in May, Portnoy reacted to people ordering a &#8220;f*** the Jews&#8221; sign at a Barstool bar in Center City, Philadelphia. After his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dave-portnoy-coming-for-throats-after-f-the-jews-sign-spotted-at-philly-barstool-bar">initial reaction</a> was to go scorched earth on the people who ordered the sign, he said he would rather <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dave-portnoy-finds-alternative-punishment-for-patrons-who-ordered-f-the-jews-sign-at-his-bar">send the individuals to Auschwitz</a> &#8220;to learn about the Holocaust.&#8221;
“And the more I thought about it, these are young f***ing morons who did this,” Portnoy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dave-portnoy-finds-alternative-punishment-for-patrons-who-ordered-f-the-jews-sign-at-his-bar">said</a> in the video, referring to his initial reaction. “They’re drunk. It’s like, do you really want to ruin somebody’s life — and let me be honest, I don’t know what’s going on in the world, well, I do in the Middle East obviously, but I’ve been doing Barstool for 20 years. I’ve had more hate, more antisemitism in the last year or year and a half than I’ve ever had doing it.”
“I’m sending these kids to Auschwitz. They’ve agreed to go,” Portnoy said. “That’s of course the Holocaust concentration camp … We’re going to send these kids to Auschwitz and they’re going to do a tour of the concentration camps in Germany and hopefully learn something, and maybe, like, their lives aren’t ruined, they think twice … to me, that’s a fair outcome.”
One of the patrons initially accepted responsibility for the incident and the offer from Portnoy, but later denied involvement. It&#8217;s unclear if the trip ever happened.

Vice President JD Vance spoke about Trump administration policy, his approach to politics, his faith and family life, and more while taking questions at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday evening.
Vance appeared at the event at the request of Erika Kirk, the widow of late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month at a college event in Utah. The vice president delivered brief remarks before taking questions in front of hundreds of students who packed the auditorium to see Erika and the vice president speak.
Here are some of the highlights from the vice president’s appearance.
One student, a supporter of the Trump administration, worried that the administration was accruing power and setting precedents that would later be used against conservatives.
The vice president responded that, while the question is fair, he is unconcerned about precedents set for a potential Democratic successor to take advantage of. He suggested that Democratic efforts to have the FBI and other law enforcement investigate President Donald Trump and other Republicans show that Democrats are unlikely to respect norms in any case.
“We cannot be afraid to do something because the Left might do it in the future. The Left is already going to do it regardless of whether we do it,” said Vance. “That is the takeaway of the last 40 years.”

Vance is in an interfaith marriage; he is Catholic, and his wife, Usha, is non-religious from a Hindu household. On his Christian faith and raising children, Vance said that one of the most important practices in his marriage is communication.

“As I’ve told her and I’ve said publicly and I’ll say now in front of 10,000 of my closest friends, do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved by in church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel and I honestly hope that my wife comes to see it the same way,” said Vance.
Vance also delivered a defense of Christianity and its values, citing a verse from Matthew.
“One of my favorite Bible verses is ‘by your fruits, ye shall know them.’ And I think that the fruits of the Christian faith are the most moral, the most just, and the most prosperous civilization in history,” said Vance. “I make no apologies for believing that Christianity is the pathway to God. I make no apologies for thinking that Christian values are an important foundation of this country, but I’m not going to force you to believe anything because that is not what God wants, and that is not what I want, either.”

On immigration, Vance was asked by a student who is dating an immigrant in the United States on a visa about his overall approach. The vice president said that, in his view, while there are immigrants who enrich the United States, the country has far too many immigrants now and admits too many each year.
“There are people who want to come to the United States of America, and some of them, I am sure, can enrich the United States of America by coming here, but we have got to get our overall numbers way, way down,” he said.

At another moment, Vance said that immigration levels should be significantly reduced until the foreign-born citizens and legal residents in the United States have assimilated.
“We have got to become a common community again. And you can&#8217;t do that when you have such high numbers of immigration,” said Vance.

A coalition of top state election officials led by Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson urged congressional Republicans to require federal election officials to mandate stronger citizenship protections for voter registration, according to a letter obtained by The Daily Wire. 
Watson and ten other GOP secretaries of state urged Republican leadership in the Senate and House to pass legislation requiring the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to change the current <a href="https://www.eac.gov/sites/default/files/eac_assets/1/6/Federal_Voter_Registration_ENG.pdf">federal voter registration form</a> to demand proof of citizenship rather than relying on an applicant&#8217;s word. The Republican officials said that the federal form made it more difficult to ensure that only American citizens were voting in elections. 
“Each state requires that to vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen. Unfortunately, the EAC has consistently refused to change the form to require proof of citizenship, preferring a general attestation instead,” Watson wrote on Monday. “As our states’ chief election officials, we respectfully seek your help in fixing this persistent problem.”
The letter was addressed to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-ND), House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), Senate Rules Committee Chair Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Administration Chair Bryan Steil (R-WI). 
The letter asked them to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require applicants to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. The measure has been opposed by Democrats. 
The current voter registration form posted by the EAC requires an applicant to check a box as proof of citizenship.

For the past two decades, state election officials have asked for the EAC to update its form to require documentary proof of citizenship, but have so far been rebuffed, the letter said. 
“The EAC’s refusal to change the Federal Form instructions has forced election administrators to process and approve voter registration applications which do not themselves satisfy the requirements laid out in state law,” the officials wrote. 
Watson said that the process of making state officials verify applicants&#8217; proof of citizenship was costly and time-consuming. 
“Each paper form requires our election officials to make individualized inquiries into state records and consult with other state databases to process them and determine citizenship,” he wrote. “In Mississippi, these checks can require up to roughly an hour of an employee’s time, depending on how far into the required state process a check must go. This is an enormous aggregate expense both in employee time and tax dollars.”

Other states that signed on to the letter included Alabama, Missouri, Iowa, New Hampshire, Indiana, Ohio, Kansas, West Virginia, Louisiana, and Wyoming.
They requested that lawmakers revise federal law to require proof of citizenship on the form provided by the EAC and to hold oversight hearings examining the EAC’s opposition to stricter citizenship safeguards. 
Election integrity groups like the Honest Elections Project have joined in the calls for documentary proof of citizenship for elections. 
“Requiring proof of citizenship is common sense, routine, and hugely popular,” Honest Elections Project Executive Director Jason Snead told The Daily Wire. “The time has come for the EAC to affirm laws that keep noncitizens from voting, not undercut them.”

At least forty people were killed as fierce winds and tornadoes ripped across the country over the weekend, slamming the Midwest and the South. 
Twenty-four of the deaths were attributed to tornadoes, while wind-fueled dust storms and fires resulted in another 16 deaths. At least 12 people <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/live-updates/tornado-outbreak-live-updates-18-dead-dozens-injured/?id=119832914" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were</a> killed in Missouri, three in Alabama, eight in Kansas, six in Mississippi, four in Texas, three in Arkansas, and four in Oklahoma. 
Tens of thousands of customers are still out of power after the storms raced across the country up into Pennsylvania and New York. More than 25,000 customers are without electricity in Missouri, 56,000 in Pennsylvania, and 23,000 in New York, <a href="https://poweroutage.us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to PowerOutage.us. 
President Donald Trump said Sunday that he had activated the National Guard in response to the storms. 
“We are actively monitoring the severe tornadoes and storms that have impacted many States across the South and Midwest — 36 innocent lives have been lost, and many more devastated,” he <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114174243289152293">posted</a> on Truth Social on Sunday. “The National Guard have been deployed to Arkansas, and my Administration is ready to assist State and Local Officials, as they help their communities to try and recover from the damage. Please join Melania and me in praying for everyone impacted by these terrible storms!”

In Kansas, a wind-fueled dust storm <a href="https://www.ksn.com/news/state-regional/dust-settles-on-71-vehicle-pileup-8-fatalities-near-goodland/">caused</a> a 70-car pileup on Interstate 70 that killed eight people near Goodland on Friday. 
“I’ve seen it before, but this is probably the worst I’ve ever seen,” Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Hileman told KSNW. 
Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama were all slammed by tornadoes, as at least 56 developed across 10 different states, <a href="https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/severe-weather-tornadoes-dust-storm-blizzard-midwest-plains-southeast-east-coast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Fox Forecast Center. Southeast Missouri was hit particularly hard after storms ripped through Wayne, Ozark, Butler, and Jefferson counties. 
Videos posted online also showed widespread tornado damage in Mississippi.

Alabama Republican Governor Kay Ivey said on Sunday that most of her state had been impacted by the storms. 
“We have reports of damage in 52 of our 67 counties. Our damage assessment continues. The sun has risen in Alabama, though. We pray for those lives we lost, as well as those who were injured. And we pray for our first responders, emergency management officials and linemen who are doing incredible work on the ground right now,” she said.
