Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that &#8220;not enough attention&#8221; is being focused on the hostages still being held by Hamas.
During an interview on Fox Business, host Larry Kudlow noted the Israeli government might engage in a complete military takeover of Gaza and pressed Rubio on whether he has spoken to the prime minister — and whether he thinks Israel is making a wise decision.
&#8220;Well, ultimately the president has said that it’s up to Israel to decide what they need to do for their own security. I’ve spoken often — almost daily — to somebody in the Israeli government, often to the prime minister but many times to many members of his team,&#8221; the top diplomat said.
Rubio then explained how there are three &#8220;interrelated&#8221; problems when it comes to the situation in Gaza.
&#8220;The first is there is a humanitarian problem that needs to be addressed. We’re working very hard to figure out ways to address it in ways that doesn’t benefit Hamas but that allows people to be fed and prevents a further humanitarian problem there that we’re seeing now,&#8221; Rubio said.
He added, &#8220;The second is that there are 20 innocent human beings that are being held hostage in horrifying conditions. And the third is that as long as Hamas exists, there will not be peace. There cannot be a permanent peace. It’ll restart again if Hamas remains.&#8221;
President Donald Trump recently <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/1828298958101812" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> there was &#8220;real starvation&#8221; going on in Gaza, in a rare break with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who contends Hamas is hoarding supplies and no famine is taking place.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said on Friday that he and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee met with Israeli officials to assess the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where the fight against Hamas continues.
&#8220;The purpose of the visit was to give [President Trump] a clear understanding of the humanitarian situation and help craft a plan to deliver food and medical aid to the people of Gaza,&#8221; Witkoff <a href="https://x.com/SEPeaceMissions/status/1951281182286500025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X.
Rubio said there is &#8220;a lot of attention&#8221; being placed on the humanitarian issue and noted &#8220;we want to do everything we can to be helpful on the humanitarian problem.&#8221;
The secretary went on to say, &#8220;But not enough attention is being paid to the fact that 20 people that had nothing to do with this are being held hostage in tunnels on the verge of death, and no real talk about how Hamas needs to be disarmed and disbanded. We have to focus more on those two things.&#8221;
He concluded: &#8220;You have to do all three, and all the talk is about humanitarian — which is important; we are willing to do a lot to be helpful there — but we have to focus on the other two. Those other two cannot be forgotten. And it’s all — the president has said he wants all the hostages out — not five, not seven, all of them, including the deceased hostages. And ultimately, Hamas cannot continue to exist. Even the Arab League says it. As long as Hamas exists as an armed group in Gaza, there will not be a &#8230; peaceful future, because it’s going to happen again. And that can’t — this can never happen again.&#8221;

‘Not Enough Attention’ Given To Hostages Held By Hamas, Rubio Declares

Among his many promises along the campaign trail, President Trump vowed to take down what he and others have described as the “censorship industrial complex,” a global network of ideologically aligned governmental, nonprofit, media, tech, finance, and academic institutions that are colluding to censor vast swaths of legally protected speech by weaponizing terms like “hate” and “disinformation.”
From early in his presidency, President Trump’s actions have consistently aligned with his campaign promises. From Day One — beginning with executive orders that led to the dismantling of the Global Engagement Center, to Vice President JD Vance’s public condemnation of widespread censorship across the U.K. and Europe — restoring free speech has clearly been a top priority for the administration.
As Trump has landed a massive trade deal with the E.U., he has also taken multiple steps to combat global censorship. That includes zeroing in on the censorship regime in Brazil via a 50% <a href="https://x.com/SecRubio/status/1946349695221043669">tariff</a> and an <a href="https://x.com/secrubio/status/1946349695221043669?s=46">order</a> to revoke visas for Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes and other members of the nation’s high court. In 2024, Moraes <a href="https://adfinternational.org/campaign/open-letter-x-brazil">ordered</a> X to block accounts of journalists and political figures under the pretext of “misinformation.” As Trump highlighted in his letter announcing the tariff, X still faces millions of dollars in fines and a permanent ban from the country.
Brazil’s disregard for free speech is paralleled in the E.U. by the “Digital Services Act.” Threatening what it designates as “Very Large Online Platforms” such as X, Meta, Amazon, and Google with crippling fines for noncompliance, the DSA weaponizes vague terms like “hate speech” and “disinformation” to purge the digital landscape of views they deem offensive, inconvenient, or a threat to their power. The DSA also formalizes the kind of public-private collusion exemplified by the censorship industrial complex, empowering private organizations as “trusted flaggers” whose censorship demands platforms are required to prioritize — or face penalties. 
Like Brazil’s Supreme Court, the DSA’s censorship directly impacts American citizens, whose accounts are subject to cancellation right along with our European cousins. We’ve already seen Americans censored under the DSA, as well as under the vague censorship policies that comprise it. These are the same policies at the heart of discriminatory debanking and financial surveillance that have targeted U.S.-based <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/yourmoney/banking/article-12417653/Debanking-row-breaks-Bank-America-shuts-account-ultra-conservative-Christian-charity-serves-impoverished-Ugandans.html">overseas missions</a> and <a href="https://adflegal.org/press-release/revealed-fed-govt-flagged-adf-domestic-terrorist-threat-target-surveillance-major/">conservative groups</a> like Alliance Defending Freedom, where I work.
They’re also the same policies that ruled the digital public square during Covid, when — often at the behest of the Biden administration and third party “flaggers” — major platforms censored and canceled users over views on public health, lab leak “theories” (since proven true), immigration, the Hunter Biden laptop <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/02/blowing-the-lid-off-the-coverup-of-hunter-bidens-cushy-plea-deal/">story</a>, gender ideology, and more. The DSA simply imposes this censorship regime on a global scale.
To the E.U. commissioners behind the DSA, the more governments work in lockstep to intimidate dissenting citizens into quiet compliance, the better. Just over a year ago, Canadian citizen “Billboard Chris” Elston <a href="https://adfinternational.org/news/free-speech-victory-in-australia-for-billboard-chris-as-x-post-censorship-overturned">posted</a> his objections to a controversial WHO appointee on X, linking to a UK Daily Mail article. The Australian government then demanded that X censor the post under its DSA-style “Online Safety Act,” using the law to classify Elston’s speech as “cyber abuse.”
With ADF International’s help, Billboard Chris took on the Australian government at the nation’s high court and won. But even that victory is unlikely to faze a technocratic cabal so committed to global censorship that it would enlist Australia to censor a Canadian speaking on an American platform and citing a British newspaper article.
Again, this multinational crackdown is a feature — not a bug — to those behind the DSA.
And that’s no surprise when you consider the actions and stated positions of DSA architects like Thierry Breton and Henna Virkkunen. It was Breton who, last summer, famously <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/eus-breton-says-musk-must-comply-with-eu-law-ahead-trump-interview-2024-08-12/">demanded</a> that Elon Musk censor then-candidate Donald J. Trump prior to the duo’s X live interview.
That incident apparently left Breton with enough egg on his face to <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/16/business/eu-official-thierry-breton-who-clashed-with-elon-musk-resigns/">resign</a> from his post as an E.U. Commissioner, but it wasn’t enough to change Virkkunen’s mind. Virkkunen recently <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-tech-tariffs-us-brussels-trade-commissioner-maros-sefovic/">defended</a> the DSA as “based on our European values” — a claim that evidently refers to the Brussels elites rather than the everyday Europeans who face <a href="https://www.deseret.com/u-s-world/2025/04/27/why-has-there-been-a-crack-down-on-free-speech-in-the-uk/">steep fines</a>, years-long <a href="https://adfinternational.org/cases/paivi">court proceedings</a>, and even <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/europe-crackdown-free-speech-26d021b1">jail time</a> for their online speech.
Fittingly enough, Virkkunen made those comments when she was asked if the DSA was on the negotiating table in ongoing trade talks with the U.S. With the DSA off the table, Virkkunen’s comrades in Brussels may have been negotiating with one hand tied behind their backs.
If that’s the case, it was a high price to pay for censoring peaceable citizens across the world, including in the U.S.

&#8220;This weekend, Secretary of State [Marco] Rubio said that he thought JD Vance would be a great nominee,&#8221; Doocy said. &#8220;You could clear the entire Republican field right now. Do you agree that the heir-apparent to MAGA is JD Vance?&#8221;
&#8220;Well, I think most likely, in all fairness,&#8221; Trump replied. &#8220;He&#8217;s the vice president. I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.&#8221;
The president, however, wasn&#8217;t ready to give a full-throated endorsement to Vance as the 2028 Republican nominee.
&#8220;I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here, so it&#8217;s too early obviously to talk about it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But certainly, [Vance] is doing a great job, and he would be probably favored at this point.&#8221;

“Well, I think JD Vance would be a great nominee,” Rubio said. “And if you know, I think if he decides he wants to do that. And so, you know, and I think he’s doing a great job as vice president. He’s a close friend. And I hope he intends to do it.”
Rubio added that he wants to stay in his role as Secretary of State &#8220;as long as the president allows me to do it &#8230; which would keep me here all the way through January of 2028.&#8221;
Multiple people in the current Trump administration are viewed as potential contenders in a 2028 Republican primary, which would be the first presidential election cycle without Trump in the race since 2012.

A senior State Department official is firing back at a group of Senate Democrats who sent a letter earlier this week urging the Trump administration to halt its support for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).
The group, led by Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen (MD), accuses GHF of being a “scheme” that endangers the lives of civilians and requested that support instead be given to United Nations-led aid efforts.
“We urge you to immediately cease all U.S. funding for GHF and resume support for the existing UN-led aid coordination mechanisms with enhanced oversight to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches civilians in need,” the senators wrote.
But the official told The Daily Wire that senators are failing to look at the successful track record of the foundation — which is on track to deliver its 100 millionth meal this week— and instead “offering nothing of value.”
“While these members waste time complaining in a letter offering nothing of value, President Trump and Secretary Rubio are actually putting in the work to help find innovative solutions to help get aid into Gaza,” the official said. “To date, GHF is the only pipeline that denies Hamas resources and control.”
The State Department pledged $30 million to fund Gaza Humanitarian Foundation operations last month.
The foundation is responsible for carrying out President Donald Trump’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-orders-humanitarian-aid-delivered-gaza?author=Kassy+Akiva&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=15&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Sends+Aid+To+Gaza.+Israel+Will+Not+Distribute+It." target="_blank" rel="noopener">aid initiative</a>, which aims to deliver humanitarian aid directly to Gazan civilians while preventing Hamas from intercepting supplies — a challenge that has persisted since the war began.
“The United States supports the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation because it offers a direct delivery model in a setting where alternatives frequently have abetted diversion to terrorist networks,” the official continued. “Hamas has systematically looted humanitarian aid, turning relief into a tool of control. Aid is part of their strategy to stay in power, leaving civilians to navigate chaos and lawlessness.”
As of July 30, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has delivered over 98.5 million meals directly to civilians since starting operations on May 26.
“No other aid channel has come close,” the official said. “Gaza is a collapsed operating environment.”
<a href="https://app.un2720.org/tracking/intercepted" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to United Nations</a> data, between May and July of this year, 1,753 trucks meant to distribute aid were &#8220;intercepted either peacefully by hungry civilians or forcefully by armed actors,” leaving a limited number of trucks to successfully arrive at UN warehouses.

Due to the constant looting of UN trucks, GHF has repeatedly offered to help the UN distribute aid, but the offer has gone unanswered. Instead, the UN has continued <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/well-break-your-legs-un-accused-of-mafia-type-response-to-u-s-led-gaza-relief-efforts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to vilify</a> the group.
The GHF has pushed back on accusations that its distribution sites are dangerous, noting that aid supplies are emptied daily by Gazan civilians, many of whom express thanks for the free assistance.
“The media says our sites are a death trap, but our workers are interacting with these people every day,” Johnnie Moore, the GHF executive chairman, said. “We see at our distribution sites something people haven’t seen in a long time in the Gaza Strip: we see smiles every single day on the faces of women, on the faces of children.”
According to GHF, security issues at its sites have been limited and are typically instigated by individuals the GHF believes are affiliated with Hamas. Incidents include <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/american-veterans-injured-in-grenade-attack-while-distributing-aid-in-gaza" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a grenade attack</a> by terrorists that injured two American contractors, and a stampede earlier this month triggered by armed men inciting chaos in the crowd that resulted in the deaths of 20 Gazan civilians.
The <a href="https://www.vanhollen.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/van_hollen_ghf_letter.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrats’ letter</a> also accuses GHF security contractors of “having no combat experience or proper training on offensive weapons.”
Moore pushed back hard on the accusation, claiming that GHF’s security contractors are among some of the most decorated and experienced special forces veterans.
“For over a dozen senators to make an accusation like that with information that is so readily available makes me wonder if it was a 17-year-old intern who wrote the letter,” Moore said.
He noted that the contractors showed incredible restraint, experience, and professionalism when the grenades were thrown at them as the perpetrators ran into the crowd to hide and blend in.
“Hamas’s intention was to get the contractors to fire into the crowd of civilians during the incident,” Moore said. “But the level of experience of the people on the ground helped them in that 0.0001 seconds to make the correct decision to lose the assailants in order to not injure any civilians.&#8221;

The U.S. State Department, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, issued a blunt statement rejecting the calls from some European countries for a “two-state solution,” vis-à-vis Israel and the Palestinian population.
The United Nations, whose vehement anti-Israel actions have been on display for decades, is currently holding a conference, hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, to discuss the possibility of declaring a Palestinian state in the wake of the October 7, 2023, massacre of more than 1,200 Israelis by the terrorist group Hamas, who invaded Israel and slaughtered civilians while taking hundreds as hostages.
French President Emmanuel Macron <a href="https://x.com/EmmanuelMacron/status/1948482142356603089">announced</a> last week that in September, France would recognize a Palestinian state.
“This week, the UN will serve as host to an unproductive and ill-timed conference on the two-state solution in New York City,” the State Department <a href="https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/2025/07/united-states-rejects-a-two-state-solution-conference/?utm_source=homepage&amp;utm_medium=news_bar&amp;utm_campaign=two-state-solution-conference/">stated.</a> “This is a publicity stunt that comes in the middle of delicate diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Far from promoting peace, the conference will prolong the war, embolden Hamas, and reward its obstruction and undermine real-world efforts to achieve peace.”
“As Secretary Rubio has made clear, this effort is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7 and a reward for terrorism. It keeps hostages trapped in tunnels. The United States will not participate in this insult but will continue to lead real-world efforts to end the fighting and deliver a permanent peace. Our focus remains on serious diplomacy: not stage-managed conferences designed to manufacture the appearance of relevance,” the statement continued.
“President Macron’s announcement about recognizing a Palestinian state was welcomed by Hamas. This reflects a pattern of counterproductive gestures that only emboldens Hamas, encourages its obstruction of a ceasefire, and greatly undercuts our diplomatic efforts to end the suffering in Gaza, free the hostages, and move the whole Middle East towards a brighter and more prosperous future,” the statement concluded.
“A Palestinian state is an existential threat to the State of Israel,” former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman has <a href="https://www.jpost.com/opinion/article-795108">stated</a>. “A two-state solution is a dead letter; Israel has no margin of error, and the Palestinian leadership has proven unreliable as a peace partner.”
“Muslim countries have 644 times the amount of land that are controlled by Israel,” U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has <a href="applewebdata://A3CD1B2D-56B9-4753-8C43-571CF91CB2F6/v">stated</a>. “So maybe, if there is such a desire for the Palestinian state, there would be someone who would say, we’d like to host it.”
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-GA) <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1MhpqHYyKc">declared</a> in 2011, “Look, you have (Mahmoud) Abbas who says in the United Nations, ‘We do not necessarily concede Israel’s right to exist.’ You’ve had four PLA ambassadors around the world say flatly, ‘Israel does not have the right to exist.’ In late November, in India, the PLA ambassador said, ‘Anybody who thinks there’s a big gap between Hamas and Fatah is kidding themselves.’ You have to start with this question: ‘Who are you making peace with?’&#8230; If I’m even-handed between a civilian democracy that obeys the rule of law and a group of terrorists who are firing missiles every day, that’s not even-handed; that’s favoring the terrorists.”
He also <a href="https://world.time.com/2011/12/18/story-problem-gingrichs-dead-jews-textbook-example-doesnt-exist/">stated</a>, “Somebody ought to have the courage to tell the truth: These people are terrorists. They teach terrorism in their schools. They have textbooks that say, ‘If there are 13 Jews and nine Jews are killed, how many Jews are left?’&#8230; It’s fundamentally time for somebody to have the guts to stand up and say, ‘Enough lying about the Middle East.’”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that Vice President JD Vance, his &#8220;close friend&#8221; and former colleague in the Senate, would be a &#8220;great nominee&#8221; if he decides to run for the presidency.
On Saturday&#8217;s episode of Fox News Channel’s &#8220;<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6376184833112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">My View with Lara Trump,</a>&#8221; host Lara Trump noted that Rubio was &#8220;quite frequently&#8221; talked about as a potential contender in the 2028 contest and asked him if he had his &#8220;sights set&#8221; outside the Department of State.
&#8220;Well, I think JD Vance would be a great nominee,&#8221; Rubio replied. &#8220;And if you know, I think if he decides he wants to do that. And so, you know, and I think he&#8217;s doing a great job as vice president. He&#8217;s a close friend. And I hope he intends to do it.&#8221;
He continued, &#8220;I know it&#8217;s kind of early, you know, but being in the role that I&#8217;m in here at the secretary of state, I really don&#8217;t play in politics. There&#8217;s actually rules against me being involved in domestic politics. And I want to do this job as long as the president allows me to do it and stay in that job, which would keep me here all the way through January of 2028. I feel, honestly, you never know what the future holds. You never rule things out or anything. You just don&#8217;t know — things change very quickly.&#8221;

Rubio then reflected on the first six months of President Donald Trump&#8217;s second administration.
&#8220;But that said, I believe that if I am able to be here, you know, through the duration of this presidency and we get things done at the pace that we&#8217;ve been doing the last six months, I&#8217;ll be able to look back at my time in public service and say I made a difference. I had an impact and I served my country in a very positive way,&#8221; Rubio said. &#8220;And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career, you know. And so that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m focused on right now, because we&#8217;re doing some special things that I think are going to bear dividend and fruit for a generation.&#8221;
Earlier in the interview, Rubio spoke about joining forces with President Trump after they competed against each other in the 2016 election.
&#8220;And then we&#8217;re on the same team because he&#8217;s a Republican nominee and I&#8217;m a Republican,&#8221; Rubio said. &#8220;I was in the Senate during the four years, his first term. And it was the best four years I had in the Senate. We got a lot done together. And then obviously he&#8217;s a resident of Florida. So, he was my constituent and we stayed in touch during that time. And then I was very happy to be helpful on the campaign. He picked one of my closest friends in politics, JD Vance, to be vice president. It was a great team. And then we were on the same team from that point forward and have been ever since.&#8221;

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday urged the new government of Syria to crack down on terror groups “carrying out massacres” against religious minorities in the country’s south.
Syria’s government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, must step in to protect religious minorities, mainly Druze, in its south if the government wants to achieve a unified Syria, Rubio said. The fighting has dampened hope that Syria may be able to transition to a peaceful state.
“The U.S. has remained heavily involved over the last three days with Israel, Jordan and authorities in Damascus on the horrifying &amp; dangerous developments in southern Syria,” said Rubio in a post on X. “The rape and slaughter of innocent people which has and is still occuring must end.”
U.S. special envoy to Syria Tom Barrack <a href="https://x.com/USAMBTurkiye/status/1946936064360497273">said</a> on Sunday morning that a ceasefire had been struck between forces in Syria’s south, and that it was holding while negotiations for hostages moved forward.
“Escalating hostilities can only be contained with an agreement to pause violence, protect the innocent, allow humanitarian access, and step back from danger. As of 17:00 Damascus time, all parties have navigated to a pause and cessation of hostilities. The next foundation stone on a path to inclusion, and lasting de-escalation, is a complete exchange of hostages and detainees, the logistics of which are in process,” said Barrack.
Clashes in Syria’s south have taken place for weeks. Violence <a href="https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2025/07/clashes-intensify-between-arab-bedouin-tribes-and-druze-militias-in-suwayda.php">escalated</a> recently when Syrian government forces moved against Druze militias led by Druze leader Hikmat al Hijri last week. In response, Israel launched airstrikes against Syrian forces, causing them to withdraw.
Rubio called on the Syrian government, which has taken the side of Bedouin tribes against Druze, to restore peace to the region instead of targeting the Druze minority.
“If authorities in Damascus want to preserve any chance of achieving a unified, inclusive and peaceful Syria free of ISIS and of Iranian control they must help end this calamity by using their security forces to prevent ISIS and any other violent jihadists from entering the area and carrying out massacres. And they must hold accountable and bring to justice anyone guilty of atrocities including those in their own ranks,” said Rubio.
Rubio also called for a stop to fighting between Druze and Bedouin tribes in Syria’s Sweida province, where the fighting has concentrated in the Druze-majority region.
After the withdrawal of Syrian government forces, Druze militias moved against Bedouin tribes, sparking retaliatory attacks against Druze. Brutality has reportedly taken place against civilians and captives of both sides.
Israel has maintained military control over parts of southern Syria to keep a buffer zone between the Jewish state and Syria, which is rife with tribal violence and jihadists – Syria’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/who-is-syrian-rebel-leader-mohammad-al-jolani">president</a> is a longtime terrorist with ties to Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Israel, which has a sizable Druze population living in its north, has promised to protect the Druze population in Syria’s south.
As part of its strikes, Israel hit targets in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Israel said it took action in defense of Druze civilians who were targeted by Syria’s military.
“The IDF continues to monitor developments and the regime’s actions against Druze civilians in southern Syria. In accordance with directives from the political echelon, the IDF is conducting strikes in the area and remains prepared for various scenarios,” the Israeli military said.

Ten Americans, some of whom had been held hostage for months by Venezuela&#8217;s socialist government, are heading back home after the Trump administration secured their release on Friday.
In exchange for the 10 Americans, over 200 Venezuelan migrants that the United States had sent to El Salvador&#8217;s notorious CECOT prison will be released to Venezuela, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/18/world/americas/venezuela-us-prisoner-swap-migrants-el-salvador.html">reported</a>.

Bukele said on Friday that his government &#8220;handed over all the Venezuelan nationals detained in our country, accused of being part of the criminal organization Tren de Aragua (TDA). Many of them face multiple charges of murder, robbery, rape, and other serious crimes.&#8221;
The American hostages will make a stop in El Salvador after being released by Venezuela before returning to the United States.
&#8220;This operation is the result of months of negotiations with a tyrannical regime that had long refused to release one of its most valuable bargaining chips: its hostages,&#8221; Bukele wrote in a post shared by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. &#8220;However, thanks to the tireless efforts of many officials from both the United States and El Salvador, and above all, thanks to Almighty God, it was achieved.&#8221;

Among the Americans held hostage by Venezuela is former Navy SEAL Wilbert Joseph Castaneda, who was detained last year while traveling, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/prisoner-swap-us-venezuela-el-salvador/">reported</a>.
&#8220;We have prayed for this day for almost a year. My brother is an innocent man who was used as a political pawn by the Maduro regime,&#8221; Castaneda&#8217;s family said in a statement. The family added that several traumatic brain injuries Castaneda suffered while serving his country &#8220;impaired his judgment and risk mitigation&#8221; and &#8220;led him to make a bad decision to travel to Venezuela.&#8221;
Another freed hostage is Lucas Hunter, an American and French citizen, who was on a kite surfing trip in Colombia when he was nabbed by Venezuelan authorities near the border, according to the Times.
A photo posted by the U.S. embassy in Venezuela showed the freed hostages waving American flags.

The release of the 10 Americans on Friday comes after the Trump administration got six Americans back home from the South American country in late January. After their release, some of the American hostages told the Times that they were beaten and subjected to &#8220;psychological torture.&#8221;
The United States has imposed <a href="https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/IF10715">sanctions</a> on Venezuela, which is led by dictator Nicolas Maduro, targeting the country&#8217;s government and oil sector &#8220;in response to Maduro&#8217;s repression.&#8221;

WASHINGTON—The State Department is rolling out a &#8220;pro-family&#8221; exemption to the federal hiring freeze for the families of diplomats working abroad, according to an internal memo obtained exclusively by The Daily Wire.
The exemption will allow diplomats to staff key embassy posts with eligible family members, known as EFMs. Eligible family members are often the spouse of the State Department employee assigned to the overseas station, and have traditionally been used to temporarily staff certain positions. 
“This is a commonsense, pro-family policy to keep the family members of our diplomats together as they work toward implementing the America First agenda at our overseas posts,” a senior State Department official told The Daily Wire. 
On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating a freeze on hiring new federal employees. At the same time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been overhauling the State Department. As part of this reorganization, the State Department has begun mass layoffs for bureaucratic positions, largely based in Washington, D.C.
The State Department said in the unclassified memo that the exemption would help support families and “support the operational readiness of U.S. Missions&#8221; and that it would be &#8220;a critical step forward in supporting our overseas staffing needs and family member employment opportunities.&#8221;
The memo, which will be sent out later today, authorizes overseas posts to start hiring eligible family members into empty positions that were previously occupied by someone with similar status. The freeze exemption will not allow for new positions to be created and cannot be used to fill vacancies previously filled by non-family member employees. 
“This exemption to the hiring freeze for EFMs makes available a pool of highly qualified candidates who can quickly fill both temporary and long-term positions that support operational readiness,” the memo says. “These will include positions in human resources, finance, security, political/economic, community liaison, medical, and consular services, ensuring that overseas posts function smoothly.”
The memo says that the policy reflects “the Department’s commitment to operational readiness, workforce morale, and the well-being of [Foreign Service] families” and that employees are encouraged to &#8220;prioritize&#8221; the hiring of eligible family members. 
The exemption will also allow eligible family members to join the Foreign Service Family Reserve Corps, meaning that they will have an active security clearance allowing them to fill “domestic and overseas positions quickly when needed.”

WASHINGTON— The State Department will inform employees on Thursday evening that it will soon begin mass layoffs, a document obtained by The Daily Wire shows.
Over 1500 employees will receive &#8220;Reduction in Force&#8221; (RIF) notices, a State Department official shared with The Daily Wire on Thursday.
The move comes after the Supreme Court <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24pdf/24a1174_h3ci.pdf">lifted a lower court order</a> on Tuesday blocking President Donald Trump from laying off federal workers at almost two dozen agencies, clearing the way for the president to move forward with his plans for reorganizing and downsizing federal agencies.
The State Department email, sent Thursday evening from Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael Rigas to State Department staff, says that once employees have received their RIF notices, State will enter its final stage of reorganization and focus its attention on delivering &#8220;results-driven diplomacy.&#8221;

“Secretary Rubio, at the direction of President Trump, has undertaken a historic reorganization of the State Department, which was thoughtfully and deliberately executed by department leadership,&#8221; a senior State Department official told The Daily Wire. &#8220;The America First State Department will better serve the American people.”
More communications and guidance will be distributed in the coming weeks, Rigas told the State Department employees.
&#8220;On behalf of Department leadership, we extend our gratitude for your hard work and commitment to executing this reorganization and for your ongoing dedication to advancing U.S. national interests across the world,&#8221; he concluded.
The move is part of Secretary Marco Rubio&#8217;s effort to conduct the largest reorganization of the State Department in decades, focusing resources on policy priorities and eliminating &#8220;redundant functions,&#8221; as Rigas noted. Rubio had reviewed and approved plans to target reduction in the department&#8217;s domestic workforce in May.
Rubio said at the time that State&#8217;s domestic operations had grown exponentially, &#8220;resulting in more bureaucracy, higher costs, and fewer results for the American people.&#8221; He elaborated on the plan submitted to Congress, saying it was the result of thoughtful and deliberative work by senior State Department leadership.
&#8220;Since my first day as Secretary, I have said that this Department must move at the speed of relevancy and, in April, announced a broad reorganization of the Department to better achieve that goal,&#8221; he noted. &#8220;Today, we took the next step in that process by notifying Congress of how we plan to do that.&#8221;
&#8220;The reorganization plan will result in a more agile Department, better equipped to promote America’s interests and keep Americans safe across the world,&#8221; he promised.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Malaysia on Thursday, seeking to push Russia toward peace with Ukraine through “a new and different approach.”
Following the talks, Rubio did not specify what exactly was said, but told reporters, “I think it’s a new and a different approach. Rubio acknowledged Trump’s displeasure with Russia, telling reporters after the 50-minute meeting, “We need to see a roadmap moving forward about how this conflict can conclude. And then we shared some ideas about what that might look like. We’re going to continue to stay involved where we see opportunities to make a difference.”
Russia’s Foreign Ministry called the discussion with Rubio a “substantive and frank exchange of views.”
“Both countries reaffirmed their mutual commitment to finding peaceful solutions to conflicts, restoring Russian-American economic and humanitarian cooperation, and unimpeded contact between the societies of the two countries, something which could be facilitated by resuming direct air traffic,” Russia added. “The importance of further work to normalize bilateral diplomatic relations was also emphasized.”
Russia’s latest attack on Kyiv included 18 missiles and 400 drones, some of which targeted residential areas. Two people were killed in the attack, a 68-year-old woman and a 22-year-old police officer. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Russia’s attack “a clear escalation of terror by Russia.”
“This demands that we speed things up. Sanctions must be imposed faster, and pressure on Russia must be strong enough that they truly feel the consequences of their terror,” Zelensky added. “There’s a need for quicker action from our partners in investing in weapons production and advancing technology.”
The Trump administration said earlier this week that it would send more defensive weapons to Ukraine amid Russia’s increased aggression. Trump is also reportedly considering hitting Russia with sanctions.

The United States is imposing sanctions on United Nations Human Rights Council special rapporteur Francesca Albanese over a “campaign of political and economic warfare” against the United States and Israel.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the sanctions on Wednesday in a post on X. Albanese is the UN rapporteur on Palestinian rights and has a long history of downplaying Palestinian terror and mischaracterizing Israeli military and defense operations.
“Today I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt [International Criminal Court] action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives,” Rubio wrote.
“Albanese’s campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel will no longer be tolerated. We will always stand by our partners in their right to self-defense,” he continued. “The United States will continue to take whatever actions we deem necessary to respond to lawfare and protect our sovereignty and that of our allies.”

Last week, Albanese released a <a href="https://www.un.org/unispal/document/a-hrc-59-23-from-economy-of-occupation-to-economy-of-genocide-report-special-rapporteur-francesca-albanese-palestine-2025/">report</a> on “the corporate machinery sustaining Israel’s settler-colonial project of displacement and replacement of the Palestinians in the occupied territory.” The report, titled “From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide,” identified nearly 50 corporate entities that it accused of war profiteering for working with the Israeli government.
Last month, Albanese <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/vicious-anti-israel-un-special-rapporteur-calls-for-un-to-expel-israel">called</a> for Israel to be expelled from the United Nations after Israeli forces bombed the headquarters of the UNRWA in Gaza City. Israel carried out the strike after learning that Hamas had set up a military base inside the headquarters after it had been evacuated.
Over the course of the war, close links between Hamas and the UNRWA have been revealed, including members of the UNRWA taking part in the October 7 attack and also being members of Hamas.
Albanese has been a supporter of the antisemitic Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement targeting Israel. She has also been an outspoken opponent of Israel’s military operation in Gaza. In February, Albanese <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/un-official-duped-by-fake-rabbis-invite-to-speak-on-morality-of-intifada-at-anti-israel-protest">said</a> that Israel did not have the “right” to invade Gaza after Hamas militants and Palestinians killed around 1,200 people and took hostage hundreds more in the October 7 terror attack.
“It didn’t have the right to act in self-defense, meaning waging a war because it couldn’t wage a war against the people it maintains under occupation,” Albanese told an audience of students at Harvard University. “What Israel had to do was to repel the attack on its own territory, arrest and detain and treat humanely the people who had been arrested and ensure justice.”
Albanese has also appeared to benefit from her close ties to Palestinian groups. In 2023, Albanese took a trip to Adelaide, Australia, that was funded by a cohort of Palestinian groups, including The Australian Friends of Palestine Association and Australia Palestine Advocacy Network.
The trip sparked concern from a watchdog group, UN Watch, that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/anti-israel-un-official-takes-expensive-trip-funded-by-palestinian-lobby-groups-report">sent</a> a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for Albanese&#8217;s removal.
