Kids who came of age in the early aughts know that ohana means family. And family means nobody is left behind.
Disney’s 2002 animated film “Lilo &amp; Stitch” tells the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo, who lives with her older sister, Nani, after their parents passed away. As Nani struggles to keep Lilo out of the foster system, they adopt what they think is a dog, but it is actually a mischievous, loving alien named Stitch. Together, they defy those trying to tear them apart, proving that &#8220;ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.&#8221;
The movie was a smash, which in Disney terms means it was a prime target for a live-action remake. And unlike Disney’s disastrous attempt to revive “Snow White,” the new “Lilo &amp; Stitch” has been a smash, raking in over $600 million to date.
But that doesn’t mean “Lilo &amp; Stitch” is free from drama. The remake has Nani giving Lilo up to a neighbor so she can chase a college scholarship in San Diego, radically rejecting traditional family values in favor of personal ambition. What was once a story about resilience, dedication, and familial loyalty becomes just another justification for the pursuit of self-fulfillment.
It’s an odd choice, particularly considering that no one seemed to have a problem with the original. And unlike “Snow White,” the “Lilo and Stitch” remake has garnered criticisms from both sides of the aisle: conservatives say the new ending is yet another instance of Disney trampling on family values, while <a href="https://x.com/CocoaFox023/status/1925888279271928310" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leftists say</a> the film is “sanitizing the critique of American colonialism [through] organisations like CPS.”
So, why would Disney rejigger a classic in a way guaranteed to make everyone mad? One former Disney employee told The Daily Wire it likely has to do with a change in how the studio approaches moviemaking.
She said that when she began at the company, “the best business model at these big entertainment companies, especially with the children, teen, and family programming was to value the consumer and the majority of the time that means valuing their children and their families.”
But then, around 2020, she felt an “abrupt shift.”
“It didn&#8217;t really matter what the audience was telling us they wanted to see,” she explained. “It felt like the networks and producers were making agenda-driven decisions.”
The former Disney staffer added that while most of the audience consisted of “flyover state” moviegoers, the decision makers decided that they wanted to “educate” the audience and direct them on “the standard of how to act.”
“So I can see a creative meeting at Disney go something like: ‘How do we update ‘Lilo &amp; Stitch&#8217; to feel like it fits our world today?’ And the general sentiment would be that it&#8217;s not modern for a woman to forgo her dreams and stay home to take care of a loved one. In order to help her family, she needs to help herself.”
A quick glance at social media shows that this was a miscalculation.
“Remember in #LiloandStitch where Nani cared for Lilo very much and used every strength of her being to protect her and did anything keep her happy? Yeah in the live action remake she just leaves for college and the neighbors take Lilo in,” one commenter wrote.

Another person agreed, <a href="https://x.com/HalfTangible/status/1926091179101127057" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a>, “Read the synopsis of the live action Lilo &amp; Stitch movie and bruh at least on paper it’s like they took the theme of the original and went ‘ok but what if we did the opposite of that.’”
One viral X <a href="https://x.com/fawfulfan/status/1928057098887135314">comment</a> with 13 million views from Matthew Chapman, a reporter for Raw Story, called out Disney for making the change.

Chapman railed about how Disney “mutilated” the original message of the movie in a series of X posts. “If you liked the original, the ending of this movie completely destroys it. I am doing a public service by spoiling it for you,” he wrote.
“So, if you remember, the original movie, without ever talking about this directly, dropped VERY clever, subtle visual hints about just how much of Nani&#8217;s life she had to throw away to take care of her sister after their parents died. All the surfing trophies in her room etc,” his post read.
“Well, the remake is much more explicit and sets up this B-plot about Nani wanting to go to U.C. San Diego and become a marine biologist. And at the end, she just&#8230;gives custody of Lilo to David&#8217;s grandma and goes to college.”
“What the hell was this whole movie about then? What was the point of the sisters desperately trying to get social services to let them stay together?” he rages. “There were retroactively no stakes in this movie. No conflict. Who cares?”
“I&#8217;ve touched on this before, but my LEAST favorite modern Disney trope is when they end the movie by letting a main character just ‘go off and be free,’ and then sweep under the rug how many people and responsibilities they are leaving behind by doing that.”
“The original movie is about a broken family trying to heal, and put their love and support for each other over anything else. Apparently not anymore, now it&#8217;s about Nani just lifting the burden of Lilo off her shoulders and finding a way to put herself first,” Chapman wrote.
It’s not just conservatives questioning the new ending. Even leftist publications like The Daily Beast <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/obsessed/lilo-stitch-fans-livid-over-live-action-movies-new-ending/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reacted</a> negatively to the change. The writer called the bond between the sisters the “emotional core” of the story and highlighted all the negative reactions to Nani’s abrupt departure.
For many viewers, this rewrite isn’t just disingenuous; it’s culturally corrosive. It’s not a matter of just trading one touching tale for another — it’s a surrendering of virtues such as self‑denial, responsibility, and the importance of family.

The Babylon Bee on Wednesday filed a legal challenge against a new Hawaii law that criminalizes political satire, accusing the state of violating citizens&#8217; First Amendment rights.
The satirical outlet filed its challenge along with Dawn O’Brien, a Honolulu voter who runs Instagram and Facebook accounts with thousands of followers where she posts political memes criticizing Democrats. The plaintiffs are accusing Hawaii of using &#8220;vague and overbroad terms&#8221; that allow state officials &#8220;unbridled enforcement&#8221; discretion to crack down on things like political memes online.
Last summer, Hawaii passed a <a href="https://legiscan.com/HI/text/SB2687/id/3005181" target="_blank" rel="noopener">law</a> that threatens jail time, fines, lawsuits, damages, and a 10-year disqualification from holding public office for posting certain political satire images online deemed &#8220;materially deceptive.&#8221;
The Babylon Bee and O&#8217;Brien are demanding that the courts block enforcement of the law and declare it unconstitutional.
&#8220;We&#8217;re used to getting pulled over by the joke police, but comedy isn&#8217;t a crime,&#8221; Seth Dillon, owner and CEO of The Babylon Bee, told The Daily Wire. &#8220;The First Amendment protects our right to tell jokes, whether it&#8217;s election season or not. We&#8217;ll never stop fighting to defend that freedom.&#8221;
The law bans &#8220;materially deceptive media in reckless disregard of the risk of harming the reputation or electoral prospects of a candidate in an election or changing the voting behavior of voters in an election,&#8221; a vague description, according to the legal challenge.
&#8220;Materially deceptive media&#8221; is defined as anything that &#8220;would cause a reasonable viewer or listener to believe that the depicted individual engaged in the speech or conduct depicted,&#8221; another vague description, the plaintiffs argue.
The law requires satirical content to include a &#8220;disclaimer&#8221; informing people that the content has been &#8220;manipulated&#8221; and depicts things that &#8220;did not occur.&#8221;
The legal challenge argues that adding a disclaimer forces The Babylon Bee and O&#8217;Brien, the Honolulu voter, to &#8220;incorporate Hawaii&#8217;s desired messages&#8221; into their content and robs their content of its &#8220;rhetorical force.&#8221;
&#8220;Because of their effectiveness and appeal, satire and parody have been used throughout American history to express matters of current interest — especially matters of politics and politicians,&#8221; the legal filing reads.
&#8220;That&#8217;s censorship plain and simple,&#8221; Alliance Defending Freedom legal counsel Mathew Hoffmann, who is representing the plaintiffs, told The Daily Wire.
&#8220;The bottom line is that we as the people exist in a self-governing society and we shouldn&#8217;t trust the government to set the terms for appropriate political debates,&#8221; Hoffmann said.
The law mentions &#8220;deepfakes&#8221; made by artificial intelligence, but Hoffmann cautioned that the law would apply &#8220;much more broadly.&#8221;
&#8220;What the law says is, digital content that basically depicts something that didn&#8217;t happen and that just risks harming someone&#8217;s reputation or electoral prospects, whatever that means,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So it wouldn&#8217;t just be deepfakes as colloquially understood. It&#8217;s really any digital content, any sort of images that may have been altered or Photoshopped, like what the Babylon Bee posts routinely online would be considered under this law to be materially deceptive.&#8221;
Hoffmann noted that political cartoons have long been protected in the United States, and that today&#8217;s memes are the &#8220;modern day&#8221; version of those cartoons. In addition, he said that the law will likely have a chilling effect on Hawaiians who may avoid posting &#8220;even questionable&#8221; satirical content out of fear it will be prosecuted.
&#8220;This law is of immense concern to all people in Hawaii or even entities like the Babylon Bee who post articles and images and funny memes that are viewable in Hawaii because they can be subject to criminal penalties simply for exercising their First Amendment rights,&#8221; Hoffmann said.

A body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines flight that landed in Maui after taking off from Chicago on Christmas Eve.
The body was found when a Boeing 787-10 from United Airlines arrived in Hawaii at 2:12 p.m. local time on Tuesday after taking off from Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 9:31 a.m., The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/25/us/body-found-united-airlines-wheel-well-maui-hawaii.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. United said in a statement that the body was found &#8220;in the wheel well of one of the main landing gears on a United aircraft.&#8221; The Maui Police Department said the person, who has not been identified, was discovered dead.
“The wheel well was only accessible from outside of the aircraft,” United Airlines added, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/25/us/united-airlines-plane-body-found-hawaii/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a>. “At this time, it is not clear how or when the person accessed the wheel well.”
The wheel well is a compartment under an aircraft that stores the landing gear and is usually a tight space — often smaller than the trunk of a car. In the past, people attempting to hitch a ride on an airplane have been crushed in the wheel well when the landing gear retracts, CNN reported.

It remains unclear how the person on the United flight to Maui got onto the tarmac and into the wheel well. Dozens of stowaways have attempted to hitch illegal rides on airplanes by climbing into the wheel well, but multiple factors make it nearly impossible for a stowaway to survive a ride in the wheel well. As a plane reaches higher altitudes, oxygen levels drop and stowaways lose consciousness. Temperatures can also reach 75 degrees below zero. Nearly 80% of the roughly 130 people who have attempted to catch a ride on the outside of an airplane since 1947 have died, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/06/us/airplane-stowaways/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Some people have survived the extreme conditions after hitching a ride on an airplane, and one person survived a brutal journey sitting in the wheel well of a plane that took off from the continental U.S. and landed in Hawaii. In 2014, a 15-year-old boy was <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/usanow/2014/04/21/stow-away-flight/7953325/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found alive</a> in the wheel well of a Boeing 767 after a five-hour flight from San Jose to Maui. The FBI said the teen&#8217;s survival was a &#8220;miracle.&#8221;

The deadly wildfire that killed 102 people and caused $5.5 billion in damages last year in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hawaii" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hawaii</a> was caused by a downed power line, according to a report released Wednesday from local and federal investigators. 
Officials with the Maui Fire Department and the ATF both <a href="https://www.mauicounty.gov/DocumentCenter/View/149693/FI23-0012446-Lahaina-Origin-and-Cause-Report_Plus-Appendix-A-B-C-Redacted" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that the August 8 fire that blazed through the island was determined to be one fire that arose from a “single origin and cause.” The investigators said the fire had a morning and afternoon phase and ruled it accidental. 
“The cause of the fire was the re-energization of broken utility lines which caused the ejection of molten metallic material (sparks) to fall to the base of pole 25, igniting the unmaintained vegetation below,” the report from the Maui Fire Department said, noting this happened at 6:34 a.m. 
A separate, but similar report from the ATF was attached as an appendix to the Maui Fire Department report. Both reports identified the same cause. 
Investigators added that the firefighters believed the blaze had been extinguished after they responded the morning of August 8. 
“Following the morning phase of the fire, all available indications showed the fire fully contained and extinguished—no flames, no smoke, and no perceptibly combusting material had been observed for hours,” the report said. “Despite the extraordinary diligence of personnel and the significant number of resources at the scene, undetected smoldering material from the morning phase of the fire initiated the afternoon phase of the fire in a gully adjacent to the existing fire area at [2:52 p.m.].”
The report said the surrounding vegetation made up of a variety of local grasses was highly flammable. The fire spread quickly due to “extreme winds” and most severely impacted Lahaina in West Maui. 
Investigators said there was no evidence that the fire was a result of intentional human activity or caused by lightning.

When commenting on the report, Assistant Maui Fire Chief Jeffrey Giesea said there was no blame for the firefighters who responded to the morning blaze.
“We want to make abundantly clear to the community that our firefighters went above and beyond their due diligence to be as confident as they could be that the fire was completely extinguished before they left the scene,” he <a href="https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2024/10/02/today-report-cause-origin-maui-wildfires-be-released/">said</a>.
State and local officials came under intense scrutiny over their handling of the fire. Some survivors <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maui-fire-survivors-say-authorities-blocked-only-paved-road-out-of-lahaina-as-town-burned-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that police blocked roads leading away from the blaze, causing a traffic jam as people attempted to escape.

“Pirates Of The Caribbean” actor and surfing legend Tamayo Perry was attacked by a shark and died as a result in Oahu, Hawaii, over the weekend. He was 49.
Perry, who appeared in Disney’s fourth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise, was taking a break from lifeguarding duty when the attack occurred near Goat Island on Sunday, <a href="https://stabmag.com/news/iconic-pipeline-surfer-tamayo-perry-killed-by-shark-in-hawaii/">Stab magazine</a> reported.
The actor — who is not only an ocean safety lifeguard but also surfing instructor — was found by local surfers off Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. When Perry was located he was missing an arm and leg, the outlet noted.
He was transported to the shore on Malaekahana Beach by emergency personnel who tried to resuscitate the surfer but moments later pronounced Perry dead.

Following the fatal attack, shark warning signs were put up in the area by ocean safety personnel, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/24/us-news/surfing-legend-and-pirates-of-the-caribbean-actor-tamayo-perry-killed-in-shark-attack-in-hawaii/">New York Post</a> noted.
Acting Honolulu ocean safety chief Kurt Lager said, “He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide.”
“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more,” he added, noting that Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all.”
“Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected,” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said, calling the surfer&#8217;s death “a tragic loss.”
Perry started his lifeguarding career in 2016 and worked as a lifeguard on the North Shore until the time of his death.
Besides keeping people safe in the ocean waters, Perry also appeared in several blockbuster movies such as the 2003 film “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” 2002 film “Blue Crush,” “Lost,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Hawaii Five-0,” the Post noted.
Perry, who was born in 1975 in Hawaii, took to water and surfing from a very early age. As young as 12, the young surfer became known as the “up-and-coming local boy who had to borrow surfboards because he had no sponsors,” according <a href="https://www.eos.surf/encyclopedia/perry-tamayo">the Encyclopedia of Surfing</a>.

Taylor Wily, who starred in the remake of &#8220;Hawaii Five-O&#8221; and &#8220;Forgetting Sarah Marshall,&#8221; died on Thursday. He was 56 years old.
Wily’s death was confirmed on Hawaii&#8217;s KITV 4 Island News by musician Lina Girl Langi, one of his close friends.
&#8220;It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of a Hawaii celebrity who was also a family friend,&#8221; Langi said. &#8220;Taylor Wily, former wrestler, MMA fighter and actor passed away today in Hurricane, Utah.&#8221;
&#8220;He would look physically menacing until you just folded right into a hug, and that was it,&#8221; she added. &#8220;My heart is breaking.&#8221;
Michael J. Henderson, Wily&#8217;s manager, <a href="https://ew.com/taylor-wily-dead-hawaii-five-0-forgetting-sarah-marshall-8667237#:~:text=Taylor%20Wily%2C%20the%20Samoan%20actor,He%20was%2056.">told</a> Entertainment Weekly that he died from natural causes and no further details would be available at this time.
Wily, born Teila Tuli, was born in Hawaii in 1968 and started his career in the Japanese sport of sumo wrestling in the 1980s and had a successful run, becoming &#8220;the first foreign-born wrestler to win the championship in the third-highest Makushita division,&#8221; according to <a href="https://people.com/hawaii-five-0-actor-taylor-wily-dead-at-56-8667178">People</a>.
He later went on to fight in the first UFC fight in 1993, losing to UFC fighter Gerard Gordeau.

Wily appeared in seven episodes of the original &#8220;Magnum P.I.&#8221; and appeared in the 2008 romantic comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”
He is best known for his role as Kamekona on CBS&#8217;s remake of &#8220;Hawaii Five-O,&#8221; where he appeared in more than 170 episodes during the show&#8217;s 10-year run from 2010 to 2020.
“Hawaii Five-O” and “Magnum P.I.” executive producer Peter Lenkov posted on social media that he was &#8220;devastated&#8221; and &#8220;heartbroken&#8221; by the news.
“You came in with a towel on your head mopping up sweat, and I was smitten. You charmed me into making you a regular… on the show… and in my life. You were family. And I will miss you every day, brother,” he said in a follow-up post. “PS: when we spoke last week, we laughed at how right you were from Day 1. Five-0 was our dream job. A coalition of 20 Republican state attorneys general filed an <a href="https://www.alabamaag.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/2024.04.01-Amici-States-Brief-in-Honolulu.pdf">amicus brief</a> with the U.S. Supreme Court this week, asking it to take up a major leftist climate case against energy companies that could have serious ramifications for the entire country.
The city of Honolulu claimed in a lawsuit that oil companies like Exxon and Chevron should pay billions of dollars because they were responsible for weather events caused by climate change, including sea level rise, heat waves, flooding, and global warming.
The oil companies initially appealed the ruling with the Hawaii Supreme Court, noting that federal law prevents states from shaping policies for all states, but Hawaii&#8217;s top court sided with the city of Honolulu.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall <a href="https://www.alabamaag.gov/attorney-general-marshall-files-amicus-brief-with-supreme-court-to-stop-cities-and-states-from-crippling-the-energy-industry/">led the coalition</a> in filing the amicus brief with support from Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.
“If Hawaiians want to rely on solar power, I have no problem with that,” said Marshall. “But Honolulu cannot force its views onto Alabama—or any other State. Major decisions about our national energy policy must be made at the federal level, not dictated by one lawsuit brought by one city in its own courts.” He added, “It is especially hypocritical for Honolulu, which has reaped tremendous benefits from fossil fuels for travel and the tourism industry, to try to impose costs on the rest of the Nation, which also depends on energy to meet day-to-day needs.”

Experts are warning that the state of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hawaii" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hawaii&#8217;s</a> ruling against oil companies is a &#8220;stalking horse&#8221; for effectively forcing Americans to live under the Green New Deal.
The warnings come as the U.S. Supreme Court <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/environment-and-energy/oil-majors-take-hawaii-court-climate-decision-to-supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">considers</a> taking up the case after the companies filed an appeal over the ruling. Some of the justices on the Hawaii Supreme Court have cited the &#8220;spirit of Aloha&#8221; in their rulings, which critics say is clear mockery directed at the U.S. Constitution.
The city of Honolulu claimed in its lawsuit that oil companies like Exxon and Chevron should pay billions of dollars because they were responsible for weather events that it claimed were caused by climate change, including sea level rise, heat waves, flooding, and global warming.
Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/hawaiis-big-oil-suit-stalking-horse-green-new-deal-push-nationwide-experts-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the oil companies initially appealed the ruling with the Hawaii Supreme Court, noting that federal law prevents states from shaping policies for all states.
Carrie Severino, president of Judicial Crisis Network (JCN), said &#8220;one rogue state court in Hawaii can’t dictate climate policy for the nation&#8221; and that &#8220;it’s Congress’ job to set national policy in this area.&#8221;
Former Arizona Solicitor General O.H. Skinner, the CEO of Alliance for Consumers, said that the ruling was &#8220;a stalking horse for the Green New Deal, with lefty enclaves looking to strong-arm progressive lifestyle choices onto an otherwise unwilling public by targeting industries that have yet to fall in line with the progressive ideal.&#8221;
&#8220;The hyper-ideological justices on the Hawaii Supreme Court seem to want to bankrupt fossil fuel companies and see this lawsuit as a magical key that unlocks unlimited power and a lot of money for progressive agendas,&#8221; Skinner said.
The report noted that Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald has worked in collaboration with a hard-Left judicial advocacy group called the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) that exists to indoctrinate judges on &#8220;how to handle climate change litigation that comes before them.&#8221;

Other justices on Hawaii&#8217;s top court have questioned the legitimacy of the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that &#8220;the Aloha Spirit inspires constitutional interpretation.&#8221;
Justices have also allowed their personal feelings to help dictate their rulings, including one who said in the ruling that in her &#8220;view,&#8221; climate change was &#8220;the most important issue facing all courts in the world at this point. It’s an existential threat.&#8221;
Skinner noted that the ruling that Hawaii wants will have a profound impact on Americans&#8217; ability to live, especially in the era of having to deal with high costs due to the inflation that President Joe Biden caused with his American Rescue Plan in early 2021.
&#8220;Honolulu’s proverbial ‘spirit of Aloha’ assault here, if left unchecked, will actually bore a hole in the pockets of Americans as it marches across industry after industry, increasing the costs of food, cars, travel, and all the other basic building blocks of the modern American life at a pace that everyday Americans won’t be able to afford,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is the high court’s problem because it will have compounding impacts on everyday Americans who are already struggling to keep up with the rising costs just to live a decent life.&#8221;

Hawaii’s top court unanimously ruled on Wednesday that “the spirit of Aloha” supersedes the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.
In the Hawaii Supreme Court’s decision in <a href="https://www.courts.state.hi.us/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/SCAP-22-0000561.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">State v. Wilson</a>, Justice Todd Eddins wrote that states “retain the authority to require” people to attain permits before they carry a firearm in public. The decision penned by Justice Eddins added that while the Hawaii Constitution “mirrors” the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, &#8220;We read those words differently than the current United States Supreme Court,” adding, “We hold that in Hawaii there is no state constitutional right to carry a firearm in public.”
&#8220;The spirit of Aloha clashes with a federally-mandated lifestyle that lets citizens walk around with deadly weapons during day-to-day activities,&#8221; the opinion continues. &#8220;The history of the Hawaiian Islands does not include a society where armed people move about the community to possibly combat the deadly aims of others.&#8221;
State v. Wilson stems from December 2017 when Hawaiian Christopher Wilson was arrested and charged with improperly carrying a firearm and ammunition, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/hawaii-court-says-spirit-aloha-supersedes-constitution-second-amendment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. Wilson’s weapon was unregistered in Hawaii, and he reportedly told officers that he purchased the gun in Florida four years earlier. He said that he was carrying the gun for protection while he hiked in West Maui. Wilson argued that prosecuting him for carrying a firearm for self-defense violated his Second Amendment right to bear arms.
In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed the right to “keep and bear arms” in D.C. v. Heller. Again, in 2022, the high court ruled in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms” extends beyond protecting yourself at home.
In its Wednesday decision, however, the Hawaii Supreme Court argues that the precedent set by the U.S. Supreme Court, upholding Americans’ Second Amendment right to defend themselves with firearms outside the home, is an outdated application of the Constitution. The ruling reversed a lower-court decision that found Wilson’s rights were violated by the charges leveled against him, The Reload <a href="https://thereload.com/hawaii-supreme-court-rejects-major-second-amendment-rulings-in-new-gun-carry-decision/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
“We believe it is a misplaced view to think that today’s public safety laws must look like laws passed long ago. Smoothbore, muzzle-loaded, and powder-and-ramrod muskets were not exactly useful to colonial era mass murderers. And life is a bit different now, in a nation with a lot more people, stretching to islands in the Pacific Ocean,” the justices concluded, adding “As the world turns, it makes no sense for contemporary society to pledge allegiance to the founding era’s culture, realities, laws, and understanding of the Constitution.”
The opinion then goes on to quote a line from the HBO TV series “The Wire” with Eddins writing, “The thing about the old days, they the old days.”

Attorney and George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley commented on the Hawaii Supreme Court’s decision, <a href="https://jonathanturley.org/2024/02/09/the-spirit-of-aloha-the-hawaii-supreme-court-challenges-the-united-states-supreme-court-over-gun-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a>, “Hawaii apparently is controlled not by the precedent of the Supreme Court but the ‘spirit of Aloha.’ While Queen Liliʻuokalani would be pleased, the justices on that ‘other’ Supreme Court may view such claims as more secessional than spiritual.”
Turley added that while the language in the state Supreme Court’s decision is strong, “The hyperbole of the decision does not mean that the Hawaii Supreme Court is prepared to defy the United States Supreme Court.”
“Indeed, other states are pushing their own bars on gun possession in public areas without such rhetoric,” he said.

In this segment, he draws on previous philosophers’ writings to form thoughts on why we should not aim for happiness and what should be pursued instead.

The philosopher Kierkegaard wrote 150 years ago, and he was one of the first psychological philosophers who really wrote about anxiety. He regarded himself rather useless, all things considered. He wrote a section in one of his books about all the industrialists who were operating in Europe at that time, trying in every possible way to make life easier and more efficient and productive for everyone, which was definitely happening during the Victorian period; Europe was rapidly transforming into an industrial powerhouse. He said someone as useless as him with an orientation toward being a student who liked to sit and contemplate ideas, talk in cafes, and smoke cigars and drink could never make anything easier for anyone than everyone was already trying to make. So he thought his task would be to make things more difficult for people because there would come a time when what people wanted was not more ease but more challenge and difficulty. That is really smart — and it is witty and it is true.
Dostoevsky knew this too. He wrote about this in “Notes from Underground.” It is a great book — a very short, absolutely brilliant, compelling, dark read. It is the confession of a miserable, resentful, murderously genocidal bureaucrat who evaluates his own soul and confesses his sins. It is also a critique of the idea of utopia oriented toward security. Dostoevsky was dealing with the set of ideas that are really tearing us apart culturally right now — this idea of an eventual utopia, based on something like security and safety. Dostoevsky really objected to that back around 1860, a long time ago. He said the thing about people that you do not really understand is that fundamentally, we are ungrateful and we can curse; that is what distinguishes us from the animals — which I thought was pretty damn comical. But he said something very interesting: If you set up a utopia so that all people had to do was eat cakes and busy themselves with the continuation of the species, after a surfeit of that, which would happen quite quickly, people would go mad, just to break things so something unexpected and remarkable could happen. We are not built for security and safety but for, let’s call it, adventure.
That is good to know because you do not want to suffer unduly; that seems reasonable. You might think because of that, what you really want is happiness. But Solzhenitsyn, for example, wrote about what happened under Stalin in “The Gulag Archipelago” and said, if your goal is happiness, what are you going to do when the jackboots hammer down your door at two in the morning and haul you off to the prison camp? Because you are not going to be happy there.
Happiness is a boat that is easily capsized and the waves are always there. So if your philosophy is one of impulsive happiness — the same sort of thing Dostoevsky and Kierkegaard were pointing out — then you are not prepared when all hell breaks loose. And all hell will absolutely 100% break through at some point in your life, and you are lucky if it will not be decades. It will certainly be some of it and it might be a lot of it, and for some of you, it is going to be damn near the whole thing. So, if what floats your boat is happiness, you are going to be capsized by the first decent wave. You might ask yourself what you have instead of happiness that might be even more reliable, and I do think that adventure is more reliable than happiness.

In the Old Testament story of Abraham, founder of the Abrahamic faiths and obviously a crucial figure in the development of world culture, Abraham is presented as a late bloomer, to say the least. He is about 83 (people lived longer back then, at least, so the story goes), and he had a very rich father by nomadic standards. He could just sit around in the tent all day with a doting mother and a rich father, eating peeled grapes and busying himself with the continuation of the species. But God appears to him and tells him to get out of his security, get out of his comfort, leave his family, leave his community, leave his nation, and go out into the world. It is very interesting to contemplate the story both from a psychological and religious perspective because what God is presented as in that book, which is a crucial book for world culture, is the manifestation of the spirit that calls even the too-secure and pampered to adventure.
Abraham is a pretty rough guy when he goes out and has his adventure. It is not all skittles and roses from then on, quite the contrary. Right away, he runs into a conspiracy of elites to steal his wife, he runs into tyranny, he runs into starvation, and he encounters war. He goes out in the world and has the whole tragedy of his life, on both the social and political front and individually. But the promise and the implication of adventure is that if you have a sufficient adventure, then that cannot so much protect you from suffering — because perhaps that is impossible — but to justify it. You know this from your own life. When you look at your life, you might look back at travails that you have undertaken.
End-of-life surveys that ask people what they regret have shown they do not regret what they did that did not work; they regret what they did not do that could have worked. They regret the chances they did not take. Even if you do an evaluation of your biography, one of the things you want to be able to say to yourself — maybe there is nothing better you can say to yourself — is: that was extraordinarily difficult but it was worth it. It is not like you can have one of those without the other because you cannot imagine that you could. Have some confidence in what you have managed to accomplish, the kind of confidence that would instill you with a genuine sense of self despite your fundamental inadequacy. To have that fundamental sense of self-regard that is grounded in something real, it has to be based in a narrative that approximates: That was extremely difficult, but it was worth it. You have to have both of those.
You see the suffering in the world: the suffering of children, the suffering of maybe your children, or you are suffering. One of the questions we always ask ourselves (which is technically a theodicy question) is: How could reality be constituted so I can have faith in its essence when there is so much suffering. One answer to that is: How much suffering do you want? You might think, none. But I do not think that is right — at least, you want something approximating optimized challenge. At least, you want to be pushed to your limit, and maybe you find the most exciting times in your life. In fact, you will pay to have this experience, to be pushed to your limit — maybe even a bit beyond it but maybe not so far beyond it that you crumble and break and things fall apart. But could you be pushed to your limit if there was not the possibility of falling apart and breaking? That is an open question. How are you ever going to take something seriously if the consequences are not actually serious? There is something delightful about dancing on the edge. That is why Hawaiians believe surfing was sacred; it is because to surf, you have to be on the edge. The waves can come and take you out at any moment, but without the possibility of the waves rising to take you out, you cannot dance on the edge — and maybe that is exactly what you want to do.

There is good evidence from the neuroscience literature that consciousness itself is something akin to dancing on the edge. So technically when you are conscious (when you are awake), your brain is occupying a position between something like chaos and order. If your brain is maximally ordered, you are just bored and nothing is changing. If you are chaotic, then it is anxiety and catastrophe. You want to be positioned right between those two, and that is when your consciousness is optimized. When your consciousness is optimized, then you are deeply engaged in life and everything seems alive and meaningful. Maybe that is the solution, in some profound sense, to the problem of suffering. It is that you optimize your interaction with chaos rather than being protected all the time from everything that can hurt you.

House Republicans are investigating the Biden administration&#8217;s response to the deadly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/maui" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Maui</a> fires, questioning aspects of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s handling of the catastrophe which left nearly 100 people dead and dozens missing, 
Republicans on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and the Subcommittee on Government Operations sent a <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/letter-to-FEMA-re-Lahaina-fire-response.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fema" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FEMA</a> Administrator Deanne Criswell on Friday asking for a detailed description of how much aid the agency has provided, plans for housing federal responders, and how Hawaiians who lost their home doing the fires are being housed.
“The deadly wildfire in Maui shocked the nation and left many, especially those directly impacted by the tragedy, with serious questions that remain unanswered today. President Biden built his entire reputation on empathy and compassion but failed to deliver an appropriate response when it mattered most. To ensure locals are receiving the assistance they need, and taxpayer dollars being used effectively, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is taking action and seeking information from FEMA on all ongoing recovery efforts in Maui,” committee chair Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) said in a <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/comer-sessions-oversight-republicans-launch-probe-into-biden-administrations-response-following-devastating-maui-wildfire/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.
In the letter, Comer and Sessions said that there had been reports of Hawaiians whose help was delayed because the FEMA responders lacked knowledge or authority to make decisions and red tape had slowed down the process. 
“Residents expressed frustration after waiting in line for considerable periods of time only to be given a number and told to call a different FEMA official. In other instances, they had been instructed to provide certain documentation, only to be told still more information would be required in order to receive benefits. We appreciate and share the desire to protect taxpayer interests, but we also encourage FEMA to streamline processes to the extent possible,” the lawmakers said.  
The lawmakers also asked Chriswell to respond to <a href="https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2023/08/24/anger-grows-fema-workers-stay-luxury-hotels-amid-maui-wildfires-disaster/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> of FEMA employees staying in luxury hotels, asking for FEMA to give context for why house federal employees were housed. FEMA has previously responded by saying that the hotels in question had wanted to help and that the government workers needed somewhere to say while on the island.

While initial reports indicated that the fires had claimed the lives of 115 people with hundreds missing, the numbers were just revised to show that 97 people were killed and only 31 people reported missing. 
“That number dropped a little bit because the Department of Defense and all of their physical anthropologists were able to help us discern better who was in cars or in houses,” Governor Josh Green (D-HI) <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/09/15/maui-fire-death-toll-missing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “So thank God, fewer people have passed away.”
Federal and state officials have been criticized for their response to the fires, which was the deadliest series of fires in years. President Joe Biden’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-after-lounging-on-beach-says-no-comment-on-deadliest-wildfire-in-modern-u-s-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">public response</a> when asked about the fires was “no comment.”

Popular podcast host Joe Rogan unloaded on Governor Josh Green (D-HI) over comments he made about future plans for the land destroyed during the recent wildfires that ravaged Maui&#8217;s west coast and devastated the historic village of Lahaina.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/youre-not-saving-jack-s-joe-rogan-unloads-on-climate-activists" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rogan</a> spoke with former Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tulsi-gabbard-torches-biden-over-trump-prosecution-the-death-rattle-of-any-democracy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tulsi Gabbard</a> (I-HI) about the horrific damages, and said he&#8217;d been shocked to see Green suggest that the state would take over some of the burned land to create a memorial.

&#8220;A governor going on television after a massive tragedy, where you have — we don&#8217;t even know the number of people dead yet,&#8221; Rogan said. &#8220;You have this massive area that&#8217;s been burnt to the ground, and then he starts talking about taking it over for the state.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s an insane position to take, post tragedy — when people are suffering at their most, they can&#8217;t even believe it happened,&#8221; Rogan continued. &#8220;And then all of the sudden he&#8217;s saying we&#8217;re going to take it for the state and make a memorial? How about give the f***ing people their homes back?&#8221;
Rogan was responding to a news clip of Green, who told Hawaii&#8217;s KHON2 News about his plans for preserving Lahaina: &#8220;I&#8217;m already looking for ways for the state to acquire that land so we can put it into work force housing, we can put it back into families, or to make it open spaces in perpetuity as a memorial for people who were lost.&#8221;
Green later clarified that the goal was to prevent wealthy people from overseas from coming in and snapping up the land — which was why he had suggested the state should take it and preserve it first.

Gabbard agreed with Rogan&#8217;s assessment on that particular point, and also criticized President Joe Biden&#8217;s overall response to the disaster.
&#8220;Hawaii has the highest cost of living in the entire country — the entire country,&#8221; Gabbard said. &#8220;And how fricking insulting is it to have the lead disaster response administrator from the Biden administration stand there and proudly say, &#8216;Hey, we&#8217;re giving everybody one $700 payment.'&#8221;
