President Donald Trump signed a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/10/columbus-day-2025/">proclamation</a> on Thursday declaring October 13 Columbus Day and vowing &#8220;to reclaim his extraordinary legacy of faith, courage, perseverance, and virtue from the left-wing arsonists who have sought to destroy his name and dishonor his memory.&#8221;
While Columbus Day has been officially recognized in the United States for decades, the Italian explorer has been attacked by Left-wing activists in recent years. Last year, then-President Joe Biden <a href="https://bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2024/10/11/a-proclamation-on-columbus-day-2024/">acknowledged</a> Columbus Day, but made little mention of the explorer&#8217;s accomplishments and focused on the &#8220;history and heritage of Italian Americans.&#8221; In Biden&#8217;s first year in office, he <a href="https://bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/10/08/a-proclamation-indigenous-peoples-day-2021/">issued</a> the first-ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day, which was recognized on the same day as Columbus Day.
Trump&#8217;s proclamation was a stark contrast with Biden&#8217;s words on Columbus.
&#8220;Today our Nation honors the legendary Christopher Columbus — the original American hero, a giant of Western civilization, and one of the most gallant and visionary men to ever walk the face of the earth,&#8221; the proclamation states.
&#8220;Outrageously, in recent years, Christopher Columbus has been a prime target of a vicious and merciless campaign to erase our history, slander our heroes, and attack our heritage,&#8221; Trump&#8217;s proclamation adds. &#8220;Before our very eyes, left-wing radicals toppled his statues, vandalized his monuments, tarnished his character, and sought to exile him from our public spaces. Under my leadership, those days are finally over — and our Nation will now abide by a simple truth: Christopher Columbus was a true American hero, and every citizen is eternally indebted to his relentless determination.&#8221;
In the past decade, controversy has surrounded Columbus Day, as leftists in academia and on the street argue that the day celebrates racism and colonialism. During the George Floyd riots in 2020, dozens of Columbus statues around the country were <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/christopher-columbus-statue-removed-cities/">torn down</a> by radical protesters or officially removed to satisfy their demands.

Some states and the District of Columbia have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day while other states recognize Indigenous Peoples Day on the same day as Columbus Day.
The president signed the proclamation during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. After signing the document, Trump showed it to the cameras in the room and said, &#8220;We&#8217;re calling it Columbus Day.&#8221;

Harris made her opinion of the holiday and its honoree clear during her failed 2020 presidential campaign and during her time in the Biden-Harris administration, as it was the first to issue a presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Day to be honored alongside Columbus Day, a federal holiday established by Congress.
“Every October, the United States has recognized the voyage of the European explorers who first landed on the shores of the Americas,” Harris said during the speech at the National Congress of American Indians Conference in 2021. “But that is not the whole story. That has never been the whole story.”

The Trump campaign addressed this issue in a <a href="https://www.donaldjtrump.com/news/7c40eb9a-9c4b-475e-b410-cf72bb72457e">press release</a> on its official website. The document noted that Harris had exclusively celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day over Columbus Day each year and that she told a voter she would support renaming the federal holiday for good.
“Kamala Harris is your stereotypical leftist. Not only does she want to raise taxes and defund the police — she also wants to cancel American traditions like Columbus Day,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
“President Trump will make sure Christopher Columbus’ great legacy is honored and protect this holiday from radical leftists who want to erase our nation’s history like Kamala Harris,” Leavitt added.
“For generations, Indigenous people have protected their lands, languages, knowledge, and traditions. On Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Day, we honor these many contributions and recommit to working alongside Indigenous people to ensure their communities thrive for generations to come,” Harris <a href="https://twitter.com/VP/status/1711425541872484390?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">tweeted</a> last year on Columbus Day.

To hear the Left tell it, Christopher Columbus single-handedly came to the new world to spread racism and disease. 
But anyone with an ounce of historical knowledge knows that’s a complete rewrite of what happened seen through the lens of a purple-haired Gender Studies major. Columbus was a human with flaws, sure. But he wasn’t a supervillain. He was brave (remember, no GPS back then), adventurous, and wise. He was a man’s man. 
Columbus. A man worth celebrating.
Michael Knowles put it best during a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn3Sgg39pDc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speech</a> at California State University in 2021. When a professor at the college tried to repeat the lie that the land Columbus came upon was owned by the native tribes and should therefore revert to them, Knowles asked him to pinpoint which tribes should get the land.
The professor was unable to answer directly. Knowles laid out the contradiction in his reasoning, saying, “The Comanche Indians come in and they conquer areas run by the Apache Indians. Now the United States comes in and it owns that land. To which tribe should that revert… to the Comanche who had it before us, or the Apache who had it before them?”
This line of reasoning lays bare the futility of making land ownership arguments when referring to a time of exploration and conquest. 
Knowles also refuted the claim that Columbus was “racist” or “a genocidal maniac,” saying these accusations are unfounded despite their popularity. 
The Daily Wire podcast host further expanded on his feelings about Columbus during a 2019 <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y-Ag-ocB-Q" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speech</a> he gave at The University of Notre Dame. 
Knowles said Columbus was “born to no rank and received no education other than the extensive instruction into which he poured his sizable genius.” He mentioned that the Left hates him at least in part because he was a devout Catholic.

In short, Columbus was a man of his time. The Left would love to rip down his statue and cry over his perceived flaws.

It is Columbus Day. Longtime fans of my show will know that it is a tradition on Columbus Day to talk about the holiday and why it deserves to be celebrated, despite what the leftist crybabies and historical revisionists might say. I will continue with this tradition for as long as the holiday and the man it commemorates remain under attack, which means that I will continue indefinitely.
Now, if you hear Columbus acknowledged at all today in the media or by any political or cultural figure of note, it will almost certainly be a condemnation. They will tell us, as they have been telling us for many years, that Columbus was a genocidal maniac whose arrival led to the alleged genocide of so-called “native Americans” or “indigenous people.” In the same breath, without a hint of irony, they will also decry what they describe as overly simplistic portrayals of Columbus and his voyages — hoping you don’t notice how no portrayal of Columbus is as absurdly and cartoonishly simplistic as the one you get from these very same people. 
As mentioned, I have made the case many times for why Columbus deserves to be celebrated, deserves to have his federal holiday, and his statues, and his cities named after him. The case is pretty straight forward. Christopher Columbus was a very great man, and one of the most consequential figures to ever live on planet Earth. He quite easily had more of an impact than every single one of his modern critics combined — times a thousand. These are the people we give holidays to, or used to. The people who shaped the world. And say whatever else you want about Columbus, he did more than almost any other single person to shape the world we live in today.

It’s often said — by idiots who claimed to be intellectually nuanced — that if Columbus did achieve this world-shaping feat, he did it “accidentally.” Even if that’s true, it wouldn’t change his significance or the significance of what he accomplished. But it’s not true. He may have been looking for the East Indies — looking, in other words, for land he knew existed rather than looking for land he didn’t know existed, so could not have been looking for by definition — but there was nothing accidental about his voyage. He didn’t trip and fall and drift across the Atlantic. Rather, he led a small fleet of ships over an unknown ocean, without the use of any modern navigational equipment. Without even a map to guide the way. You would think that this would be impressive to modern people who can’t manage to drive to the Starbucks three blocks away without the assistance of satellite navigation. But that would require modern people to have humility and perspective, both of which are in short supply.
Over the course of his four voyages, Columbus discovered many Caribbean islands and explored the coasts of Central and South America. The full scope of what he had discovered would not be fully understood until after he died, but the fact remains that Columbus brought western civilization across a vast and uncharted and dangerous sea, and into a previously unexplored and unknown hemisphere of the globe. He forever changed the world, and he changed it in a way and to a degree matched by very few other people who have ever lived on the planet — and aside from Jesus Christ, exceeded by perhaps no one. He did this through his courage and daring and brilliance and vision. All things worth admiring and all virtues that Columbus possessed in far greater quantity than any of his smarmy, petty, non-contributing critics. 
Was Columbus also a deeply flawed man? Could he be brutal and unjust? Yes. Welcome to almost any great man who has ever lived. 
Sure, Columbus captured slaves. He executed both Spaniards and Indians under his rule. He took gold. He was by all accounts a bad governor. This was a common flaw of explorers of the era. Many of them were brilliant on their ships but incompetent or downright horrible on solid ground. Magellan made it three-quarters of the way around the world before getting himself killed in a needless conflict with a tribe in the Philippines. A certain type of man was needed to navigate a fleet of ships across uncharted waters. A different kind of man was needed to manage settlements. Unfortunately, the latter type had no way of getting to the settlement except by hitching a ride with the former. And the former wasn’t often willing to cede control of the land he had just gone through all the trouble of discovering, a somewhat understandable reluctance, I think.
There is nothing wrong with acknowledging the flaws of men like Christopher Columbus. Nobody is suggesting that we should honor them as perfect people or worship them as gods. The point of the statues, the monuments, and the holidays is to remember and celebrate the indispensable role they played in establishing the civilization in which we all now live — a civilization that just so happens to be the freest and most prosperous in the history of the world. Columbus, through his navigational brilliance, boldness, courage, vision, and determination, is one of the men we have to thank for that.
Some people might claim that western civilization is nothing to be thankful for at all. I can’t help but notice, though, that those people still choose to live here, enjoying the comforts and freedoms given to them by the very men whose monuments they deface and holidays they cancel. They claim this is “stolen land,” yet they remain on it, basking in its luxuries. The fact is that they would much prefer to live in the “colonized” version of this land than the alternative. Most Indian tribes were about five to six thousand years behind the more advanced civilizations on the other side of the ocean. If left to their own devices, by now they probably still wouldn’t have even invented the wheel. That is not a world that any supposed opponent of “colonization” would want to live in, no matter what they say.
Which brings us to the day that has come to replace Columbus Day. Now you will hear most people in the mainstream talk about “Indigenous Peoples” day. Joe Biden recognized “Indigenous Peoples Day” in a presidential proclamation for the first time two years ago. In many corners of American society, it has entirely supplanted Columbus Day. But Indigenous Peoples Day is a total farce, a disgrace, and a joke, for several reasons. 
First, it isn’t a real holiday, it’s a political statement. A protest. A thing invented specifically to overshadow Columbus Day. Leftists don’t understand why this is a problem because everything they do is reactive in this way. Their whole cultural agenda is designed to supplant, destroy, dismantle the old traditions and values. They have no ideas of their own. Nothing new or interesting to say. They just have a bunch of things they don’t like and want to destroy for reasons they can barely articulate. Columbus Day celebrates one of the greatest historical figures to ever live. Indigenous People’s Day is a political tactic meant to undermine that same historical figure. So, if you want a real holiday in order to celebrate “Indigenous people,” then get your own day. Try for once to come up with one idea that isn’t designed to simply be the opposite of someone else’s idea. Think for yourself for a change, you halfwit plagiarists. 
Second, the underlying premise of the day is false. This is supposedly a day to acknowledge the people whose land was stolen by European settlers, but the whole “stolen land” thing is preposterous. There were <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Native-American/Native-American-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">maybe as low</a> as one or two million Indians living on the entire North American continent by the 15th century. At most, there were 15 or 20 million. The point is that the vast, vast majority of the land was unoccupied; North America was mostly an untamed, unexplored, uninhabited wilderness. The smattering of tribes spread out across 9 million square miles did not own the whole thing. People these days talk as if the Europeans had no right to come here in the first place (an interesting assertion from open borders advocates), but that is obviously absurd on its face. The tide of civilizational expansion and progress was not going to be held back forever. And the idea that a rag tag collection of warring stone age tribes somehow laid eternal claim to this entire hemisphere is just insane. The land was destined to be conquered by more civilized and advanced people, and it was, and thank God it was. 
Third, the whole concept of “indigenous people” is arbitrary, if not totally nonsensical. What makes a person “indigenous” exactly? How long does their lineage have to be present here? If I can trace my family back 100 years, is that not good enough? 200 years? 300 years? The absurd reality is that if you are a white person living in the United States of America, and your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower 400 years ago, you still somehow do not count as either native or indigenous. This is not your native land, even after four centuries. Then where exactly is your native land? If you are not indigenous to this place, the place where you were born, and your parents were born, and your grandparents, and your grandparents grandparents, then where are you indigenous? The answer is nowhere. The cultural powers that be want you to consider yourself ancestrally homeless. You belong nowhere. You are a usurper and an invader no matter where you go. You have no native home, no matter how long your family has lived here.
Nobody applies this standard to the so-called “indigenous people.” None of them “originated” here. They all descend from people who came here at some point in the past and fought over the land and killed each other to claim whatever slice of it they possessed before the white settlers arrived. Those settlers fought for it too, and won. They built a life for themselves through work and toil and hardship and blood. Yet we are supposed to live in a state of perpetual shame over this history. 
Well, I refuse to play that game. This is my home. I am native to this country. I originate here. I belong here. I am proud of our history. I am proud of the men who built our civilization. I celebrate those men. I will continue to celebrate them. Were they colonizers? Sure they were, and I celebrate that too. They colonized. Meaning they forged into an unknown wilderness and built a life for themselves, expanding western civilization in the process. It was a virtuous act. And through it, they earned the right to call this place home, and for all of their descendants through the ages to do the same.
That is why they get the holidays, they earned them.

Single mother and Virginia state Senate candidate <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/journalist-calls-child-protective-services-on-senate-candidate-and-single-mom-over-columbus-day-tweet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tina Ramirez</a> (R) made it clear that she was ready to fight back after self-described journalist David Leavitt apparently reported her to Child Protective Services over a tweet.
The offending tweet was a simple statement from Ramirez wishing her followers a happy <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/elizabeth-warren-celebrates-indigenous-peoples-day-social-media-happy-columbus-day-chief/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Columbus Day</a> — and Leavitt, who had previously expressed his own views eschewing the holiday, accused her of promoting rape and racism, among other things.
The spat escalated quickly throughout the day on Monday, and after Ramirez made it clear that she intended to teach her child history without interference from left-wing activists, Leavitt first entreated his 330,000+ followers to call CPS and report her for &#8220;abuse&#8221; because he claimed she was teaching her child to be racist.
Leavitt eventually opted to make the call himself — all the while complaining that he had to sit on hold for more than an hour to file his report with the state.
Ramirez pushed back, accusing Leavitt of wasting state resources in his pursuit of what amounted to political persecution — and Christina Pushaw, rapid response director for Governor <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/does-it-say-that-in-the-bill-ron-desantis-rebukes-reporter-for-pushing-dont-say-gay-narrative/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ron DeSantis</a> (R-FL), was among a number of people who suggested that might actually be a crime in the state of Virginia.
&#8220;Isn’t this a crime in VA? It’s like making a false 911 call or Swatting. Report him to the state police and AG’s office. Get him arrested. If he doesn’t face consequences he will do it again,&#8221; Pushaw said.

Ramirez apparently did just that, announcing on Tuesday that she had followed her words with actions — or, at least, with a phone call to Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R) to report the issue.

A new national poll suggests that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hispanics">Hispanics</a> in the U.S. favor Christopher Columbus more than President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Conducted by WPA Intelligence, a conservative polling firm that collaborated with Visto Media on behalf of Latino advocacy group Bienvenido, the national poll surveyed 1,086 respondents about which high-profile personalities Hispanic communities approved or disapproved of in an era where liberal politicians and activists propagate ongoing efforts to cancel the 15th-century Italian navigator who set out on a historic voyage in 1492.
&#8220;When you juxtapose Christopher Columbus&#8217; popularity among Hispanics with the misguided efforts to &#8216;cancel&#8217; him by progressive activists and politicians, it shows how out of touch the far left is with our community,&#8221; Abraham Enriquez, Bienvenido president, said.
Progressives have been pushing for the cancellation of Christopher Columbus in recent decades, deeming his journey to sail from the Spanish port of Palos de la Frontera on behalf of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II to explore Western civilization as an act of genocide of the Indigenous people.
&#8220;The reality is that most Hispanics, especially those who are immigrants, view Columbus quite favorably,&#8221; Enriquez added.
While educational institutes, liberal politicians, and anti-American extremists push the narrative that the Italian explorer embarked on an expedition to merely rape, pillage, and enslave the West, Hispanic communities refuse to buy the message.
According to the poll the partnering groups ran earlier this month, 53% of Hispanics view Columbus favorably, while 24% view him unfavorably, yielding a net favorability of 29 points. Meanwhile, 49% percent of Hispanics have a positive opinion of Biden, while 42% have a negative view of him, resulting in a net favorability of seven points.

On the other hand, Harris was viewed by Hispanics as the least popular between Biden and Columbus, with a net favorability rating of four points, as 45% of Hispanics say they have a favorable view of her and 41% view her unfavorably.
The poll also suggested that Hispanics&#8217; views on Columbus varied by age and whether they were born on U.S. soil or in another country. The survey says the older generations born outside the nation are more likely to view the explorer favorably than those born in the United States.
Among 18-39 years-old Latinos, 45% have a favorable view of Columbus, while 30% view him unfavorably. Among 40-59 year-olds, 54% have a favorable opinion of him and 29% unfavorable. However, among Hispanics 60 and older, 71% view him favorably and just 17% unfavorably, the poll indicates.
&#8220;It is not surprising that the same people who think Hispanics like being called &#8216;Latinx&#8217; have also assumed Hispanics are offended by Christopher Columbus — and got it completely wrong, again,&#8221; Conor Maguire, Principal and Managing Director of WPA Intelligence, said. &#8220;In the future, maybe progressives should just ask Hispanics how they feel about issues?&#8221;

According to a lawsuit filed by a former Chicago Park District deputy general counsel who made a deal with an Italian American group to allow a Christopher Columbus statue to be used in a parade, Chicago Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot furiously told him, “My d*** is bigger than yours and the Italians. I have the biggest d*** in Chicago.”
The prelude to Lightfoot’s alleged remarks involved Lightfoot’s 2020 order — after the death of George Floyd prompted nationwide protests — to remove two Christopher Columbus statues which had stood for decades in Grant Park and Little Italy&#8217;s Arrigo Park. “This step is about an effort to protect public safety and to preserve a safe space for an inclusive and democratic public dialogue about our city&#8217;s symbols,” Lightfoot stated.
The statues were removed and placed in a city storage facility.
Then, prior to Columbus Day in October 2021, city Italian-American groups asked to display a Columbus statue temporarily during their Columbus Day parade and proposed placing it last in the parade and covered until the end, the lawsuit states. George Smyrniotis, who filed the lawsuit against Lightfoot and the city, and his superiors at the Park District had agreed to the proposal, with the idea that the Park District thought it would generate goodwill with the Italian Americans.
Lightfoot then threatened to pull the parade&#8217;s permit.
At a meeting between Lightfoot and Park District lawyers, Lightfoot allegedly warned them they had to submit their actions to the city&#8217;s legal department for approval, adding not “to do a f***ing thing with that statute without my approval.”
“&#8217;Get that f***ing statue back before noon tomorrow or I am going to have you fired. &#8230; What the f*** were you thinking? &#8230; You make some kind of secret agreement with Italians,” Lightfoot said, according to the lawsuit. “My d*** is bigger than yours and the Italians. I have the biggest d*** in Chicago.” The lawsuit claims she also snapped, “You are out there stroking your d*** over the Columbus statue, I am trying to keep Chicago police officers from being shot and you are trying to get them shot.”
Chicago&#8217;s Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans filed a separate lawsuit alleging that the Park District violated a 1973 deal when it removed the Columbus statue in Little Italy. Enrico Mirabelli, who represents the group, told the <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/politics/ct-lightfoot-park-district-lawsuit-20220303-p6wcbp6qfbhhlo4ovkhvyezpom-story.html">Chicago Tribune</a>, “Presuming the mayor has been accurately quoted, her comments give proof to the claim that she has wrongfully interfered with my client&#8217;s contract with the Chicago Park District in a degree that is unprecedented.”
The president of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, Ron Onesti, echoed that he was “literally outraged that someone in her position would ever use words like that to refer to any group of individuals. When will it end with the disrespect?”

&#8220;I understand that she apologized for causing confusion on tribal sovereignty and tribal citizenship and the harm that has resulted,&#8221; Hubbard reportedly said. &#8220;The chief and secretary of state appreciate that she has reaffirmed that she is not a Cherokee nation citizen or a citizen of any tribal nation.&#8221;
&#8220;Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong,&#8221; said Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. in <a href="https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/411633-media-embrace-of-warrens-1-1024th-heritage-an-epic-failure">a statement to media</a> after Warren released her the test. &#8220;It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven.&#8221;

Elizabeth Warren Celebrates Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Social Media: ‘Happy Columbus Day, Chief!’

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on Monday signed a declaration promoting Columbus Day in the state of Florida.
DeSantis&#8217; unequivocal comments in the declaration come as left-wing activists and politicians continue to redefine the holiday as &#8220;Indigenous Peoples&#8217; Day&#8221; and vilify the explorer.
&#8220;Columbus Day commemorates the life and legacy of the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, who made Europeans conscious of the existence of the New World and whose travels opened the door for the development of European settlements in the Western Hemisphere, which would ultimately lead to the establishment of the United States of America,&#8221; DeSantis&#8217; declaration said.
The governor noted that Columbus Day was first proclaimed a national holiday by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892, though, &#8220;until very recently,&#8221; the &#8220;unifying day for all Americans&#8221; has turned political.
&#8220;Columbus stands a singular figure in Western Civilization who exemplified courage, risk-taking, and heroism in the face of enormous odds; as a visionary who saw the possibilities of exploration beyond Europe; and as a founding father who laid the foundation for what would one day become the United States of America, which would commemorate Columbus by naming its federal district after him,&#8221; the proclamation continued.
DeSantis then touched on the significance of Columbus Day for Italian-Americans.
&#8220;Columbus continues to be a historical figure who engenders the pride of nearly 17 million Italian Americans, a community whose warmth, generosity, patriotism, and love of family have made those characteristics even greater components of the broader American culture and way of life,&#8221; it said.
DeSantis&#8217;s proclamation emphasized that &#8220;we must learn from history and continue to discuss Columbus&#8217; contributions, discoveries, and experiences rather than revise history, and acknowledge that individuals who seek to defame Columbus and try to expunge the day from our civic calendar do so as part of a mission to portray the United States and Western history in a negative light as they seek to blame our country and its values for all that is evil in the world, rather than see it as the force for good.&#8221;

Last Friday, after President  Biden issued two proclamations, one which <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/10/08/a-proclamation-on-columbus-day-2021/">honored Columbus Day</a> but cited “the painful history of wrongs and atrocities that many European explorers inflicted on Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities” and <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2021/10/08/a-proclamation-indigenous-peoples-day-2021/">another</a> that celebrated the day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the NBA San Antonio Spurs&#8217; coach Gregg Popovich, who spent the years of the Trump presidency attacking President Trump, lauded Biden while attacking those who celebrated Columbus Day, snapping that Italian-Americans honoring Columbus was akin to saying, “We should be proud of Hitler because we are German.”
At a pre-game session before the Spurs-Heat preseason game, Popovich proclaimed of Biden’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation, “The proclamation was obviously appropriate, important, needed, and all those sorts of things but I’m a little confused about our city and why it’s Indigenous People’s Day ‘slash’ Columbus Day. Columbus?”
“He initiated a New World genocide,” he continued. “That’s what he did. Beginning with him and what he set in motion what followed, the annihilation of every Indigenous person in Hispaniola, which was Haiti and the Dominican Republic today. That’s what he did. He took slaves. He mutilated. He murdered. And we’re gonna say ‘slash’ and honor him?”
“I gotta give the San Antonio Independent School District a little bit of credit because at least they added Indigenous Peoples’ Day along with it and that’s a step in the right direction,” Popovich pontificated. “But what the hell is Alamo Heights thinking? It’s Columbus Day, that’s why they’re off on Monday? Maybe there is something I am missing, and I am ignorant. But it makes me feel like they’re living in a phone booth. And they are educating our kids?”
“Columbus Day? And we’re gonna honor that?” he asked rhetorically. “It’s no knock on Italian Americans. That’s a silly argument. It’s like saying, ‘We should be proud of Hitler because we are German.’ It makes no sense. It’s about Columbus. It’s not about Italian-Americans. And so, there are a lot of states that have come out and scratched Columbus Day and made it Indigenous Peoples’ Day. But in our city, are we that backward that we have school districts that do that? In August 2020, sports journalist Jason Whitlock slammed Popovich for promoting the false “hands up, don’t shoot” narrative about Michael Brown.
Writing at <a href="https://www.outkick.com/gregg-popovich-lies-about-michael-brown-intentionally-promotes-racial-animus/">Outkick the Coverage</a>, Whitlock stated bluntly, “Popovich is not dumb. He’s intentionally promoting racial animus.” Whitlock wrote, “I know no longer pretend Michael Brown was an innocent victim of police brutality. The facts do not support that bogus narrative. These facts were made public more than four years ago.”
“So why did San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich spend three minutes Sunday <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2903815-gregg-popovich-talks-racial-injustice-on-anniversary-of-michael-browns-death">promoting</a> a Michael Brown narrative debunked by a black president, a black attorney general and colorblind facts?” Whitlock asked, adding, “Has someone or some organization asked Popovich to irresponsibly spew racial conspiracy theories? Racial unrest and violence have rocked this country for two months. Why would Popovich agitate an already tense situation with lies?”
The day after Trump’s inauguration Popovich <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2017/1/21/14348464/gregg-popovich-donald-trump-video-quotes-transcript-criticism">stated</a>, “I’d just feel better if somebody was in that position that showed the maturity and psychological and emotional level of somebody that was his age. It’s dangerous and it doesn’t do us any good.”
In May 2017, Popovich <a href="https://www.sbnation.com/nba/2017/5/14/15638134/gregg-popovich-donald-trump-game-show-spurs">doubled down</a>, saying:

It’s got to do with the way one individual conducts himself. And that’s embarrassing. It’s dangerous to our institutions, and what we all stand for and what we expect the country to be. But for this individual, he’s in a game show. And everything that happens begins and ends with him. Not our people or our country; every time he talks about those things, it’s just a ruse. That’s just disingenuous, cynical and fake.</blockquote>

This Columbus Day, October 11, we should expect the now accustomed fury over any commemoration of the European “discovery” of America. Misinformation now seems always to accompany any celebration on this date—as if history must be puerile melodrama rather than tragedy—and as if in childish fashion we are to count up the importation a half-millennium ago of European pathologies—infectious diseases, zealous religious proselytizing, or African chattel slavery—versus New World payback like the gift of toxic tobacco, cocaine, and, more controversially, perhaps syphilis.
More seriously, October 11 always reminds also us of a number of contemporary disconnects. A castigated America’s much-caricatured government, and economic and social traditions, are the products of the political and philosophical heritage of the now reviled European Enlightenment. And yet, the United States still remains the premier destination of millions of would-be immigrants, many of them indigenous peoples. All risk their lives to enter a country entirely different from their own in Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
What draws them in is the unique idea of American citizenship and the freedom and empowerment of the individual. Yet, our republic and its unique brand of citizenship are not indestructible. Indeed, they seem recently more fragile than at almost any time in our history.
Over two-million foreign nationals are anticipated to cross the southern border illegally during the current fiscal year. The chaos of Mexican, Central American, and, more recently, Haitian immigrants crashing into the United States is now the new normal.
Unlike American citizens who work for the federal government, and will no doubt soon be attending to the social needs of illegal immigrants, the newly arrived are not required to be either vaccinated or tested for COVID-19.
When Americans reenter the U.S. from foreign countries by land, sea, or air, they almost always are detained if they lack a passport. Yet no such identification requirement is asked of non-Americans at the border.
Nor can Americans choose the individual statutes they find inconvenient and thus not worth obeying—in the fashion of those foreigners now crossing into Texas who assume the laws of their newfound hosts do not apply to themselves.
All U.S. soldiers must soon be vaccinated. Not so the more than 100,000 Afghan refugees who are being shepherded into America by our military personnel.
Equality under the laws is the cornerstone of our constitutional system. But recently ideology has warped how citizens are treated by the criminal justice system.
During the 2020 summer riots, violent protests led to the torching of a federal courthouse in Portland and a police precinct in Minneapolis.
The 120 days of continuous rioting, looting, and arson resulted in nearly $2 billion in property damage, 28 deaths, and 14,000 arrests—the vast majority of which were eventually dropped.
In contrast, many of the January 6, 2021, Capitol rioters still sit in jail, some in solitary confinement and a few without being formally charged. Both events were deplorable. But one set of those criminally charged face indefinite incarceration, tough prosecution, and likely stiff sentences, while the other expects exemptions despite being responsible for greater aggregate death and destruction.
The United States is run by elected officials who make our laws by the consent of us, the governed. Yet the federal bureaucracy has grown in such numbers, power, and influence that its permanent administrators are rarely audited or held accountable. Often, they wield the frightening combined powers of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches.
Take the recent cases of our most powerful, non-elected federal officials—Gen. Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and the former directors of the FBI, James Comey; the CIA, John Brennan; National Intelligence, James Clapper; and Robert Mueller, a Department of Justice Special Counsel.
Recently, Milley likely violated the military chain of command as specified in a number of laws concerning the Joint Chiefs by usurping the sole prerogatives of the President, the Secretary of Defense, and military commanders in the field. Milley did this when without authorization he recalibrated long-standing procedures relevant to our nuclear deterrent.
Although his purview is to advise the president on national security, in further freelancing style, Milley warned his Chinese communist counterparts that if the U.S. were to initiate aggressive action against China, he would warn them in advance.
James Comey, under oath before Congress, on some 245 occasions claimed he could not remember or did not know when asked specific questions regarding his own FBI’s controversial and sometimes illegal role in the Russian collusion hoax.
John Brennan admittedly lied twice under oath to Congress, once denying CIA monitoring of the computers of Senate stuffers, and again falsely denying accusations of collateral civilian causalities incurred as a result of US drone strikes.
James Clapper claimed while under oath before the Congress that he had given “the least untruthful” answer when he lied that the National Security Agency had not surveilled American citizens.
The foundations for the entire Russian collusion hoax and the special counsel investigation were the spurious “Steele dossier” and the nefarious role of Fusion GPS in seeding that fake document among government agencies. Yet when asked about the role of both in his 22-month, $40 million investigation, Mueller preposterously claimed he knew nothing about either.
Note that none of these officials were ever charged, cited, or condemned for being elusive, uncooperative, or simply flat out lying while under oath—although citizens themselves face stiff penalties should they do the same.
Of all our current controversies during the turmoil of the last two years, the one common theme is that American citizens have lost the benefits of citizenship and too often ceded control of their own destinies to unelected others. But without autonomous and empowered citizens, America simply cannot remain America.
And so, this Columbus Day, we are left with the final irony. The Left successfully pushed for open borders. Millions of unaudited and often illegal immigrants were the result. Yet if progressives and socialists were to have their way in changing the 233-year traditions, customs, and laws of a unique America, then very soon the United States would become just another nation in the Americas—and thus immigrants would likely just stay home.
