President Donald Trump tore into “Dumocrats” in a Columbus Day message posted to his Truth Social account, blaming the left for the crusade to take down statues of the Italian explorer.
Trump posted the message early on Sunday morning ahead of the federal holiday on Monday — which Franklin D. Roosevelt first proclaimed as an annual national observance in 1937 — and declared the days of tearing down statues to be “over.”
“HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY TO ALL, in particular our great Italian American Community which was forced to suffer as the Radical Left Dumocrats, Socialists, and Communists rampaged through our cities and towns ripping down almost all of the beautiful statues of Christopher Columbus,” Trump posted.
“Well, those days of plunder are over, and the statues are back, more magnificent than ever,” he continued. “This is a big day for our great Italian American Community, and the Country of Italy itself, maybe the biggest. Congratulations!”
One such statue was placed in front of the Eisenhower Executivef Office Building, Trump announced in September.
“Christopher Columbus proudly stands at the entrance to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, directly adjacent to the White House, one of the most important Entrances to a Building in D.C. I did this in Honor of the Italian American Community — Industrious, brilliant, wonderful people. It is something that they have greatly appreciated!” he posted on Truth Social.
Trump has consistently honored Columbus despite attempts from the left to have the famed explorer’s reputation disparaged and his statues torn down because of his alleged treatment of Native Americans.
“Christopher Columbus’s spirit of determination & adventure has provided inspiration to generations of Americans. On #ColumbusDay, we honor his remarkable accomplishments as a navigator, & celebrate his voyage into the unknown expanse of the Atlantic Ocean,” he posted on Twitter in 2018.
“I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also direct that the flag of the United States be displayed on all public buildings on the appointed day in honor of our diverse history and all who have contributed to shaping this Nation,” he added in the accompanying Presidential Proclamation honoring the day.
In a number of states, in response to pressure from the left, Columbus Day has either been renamed or combined with Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
