The House voted to end the government shutdown on Tuesday in a 217 to 214 bipartisan vote, and the appropriations bills will head to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.
The spending package returned to the House after the White House and Senate Democrats agreed to split Department of Homeland Security funding from the rest of the broader legislation. Lawmakers instead opted for a continuing resolution to fund DHS while immigration enforcement policies remain under debate. The CR for DHS is set to expire on Feb. 13, while the other bills would fund the federal government through September.
The House had already passed the spending bills, but they were punted back to the chamber after pressure from Senate Democrats for the DHS split following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last month.
Some Republican lawmakers wanted the SAVE Act, a bill that would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, inserted into the package to send it back to the Senate.
The proposal has already passed the House, but it has not progressed in the Senate, with GOP House lawmakers calling on Senate Rules Committee Chair Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to get the process started.
However, Trump said Monday that there should be no changes to the spending package the Senate approved on Friday.
“I am working hard with Speaker Johnson to get the current funding deal, which passed in the Senate last week, through the House and to my desk, where I will sign it into Law, IMMEDIATELY!” Trump posted to Truth Social at the time.
“There can be NO CHANGES at this time. We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless, and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly — One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!” He continued.
As for the DHS debate, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) expects tension in Washington.
“Next week and the week after will be intense. The two sides are pretty far apart,” Johnson (R-LA) told Punchbowl News on Tuesday.
Democrats have a long list of demands that they want for ICE and CBP to limit their current immigration enforcement tactics, including the end of masking for agents.
“No more anonymous agents. No more secret operatives,” Schumer said last week.
“These are common-sense reforms – ones that Americans know and expect from law enforcement,” he added.

President Donald Trump says he wants to move forward with the federal government spending package without any changes, as the government has remained shut down since last weekend.
Some Republicans, like Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), have advocated for including the SAVE Act in the package, which would require documentary proof of citizenship in order to become a registered voter — though Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said such a move would be a dealbreaker if appropriations bills returned to the chamber with it included.
“There can be NO CHANGES at this time,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, saying that he wants the bill to be signed into law right away, and that he’s “working hard with Speaker Mike Johnson.”
“We will work together in good faith to address the issues that have been raised, but we cannot have another long, pointless and destructive Shutdown that will hurt our Country so badly — One that will not benefit Republicans or Democrats. I hope everyone will vote, YES!” he added.
Last week, the White House brokered a deal with Schumer to pass the funding bills and secure Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding through a short-term continuing resolution — even as Democrats want to see more regulations on federal immigration enforcement. Changes being demanded by the Democrats range from a switch from administrative to judicial warrants for immigration arrests to the end of masking for immigration authorities, despite doxxing concerns having been raised amid a surge in assaults against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The House Rules Committee is currently meeting to go through the procedural process to get the funding bills up to the House floor on Tuesday.
Johnson told a scrum of reporters on Monday afternoon that “we’re gonna get this job done, get the government reopened.”
Although Johnson has a one-seat Republican majority, the spending bills prior to the DHS deal were already approved by the House last month before they headed to the Senate.
For the current version of the spending bills, Appropriations Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) indicated during the rules committee hearing that she is going to back the spending package, saying, “It gives us time, and it gives us leverage to secure the protections we need for our communities,” according to the Washington Examiner.
Schumer lambasted the SAVE Act as a relic of the Jim Crow era, despite similar policies already being in place in multiple states. “The SAVE Act is nothing more than Jim Crow 2.0. It would disenfranchise millions of Americans,” he posted to X. &#8220;Every single Senate Democrat will vote against any bill that contains it. Speaker Johnson should tell SAVE Act Republicans to stand down or else this shutdown will be on them.&#8221;

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is leading an effort to have the measure added to the package.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would require states to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship and identity to register to vote, a requirement already in place in a small number of states.
&#8220;I have said it before and I&#8217;ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate,&#8221; Schumer said in a statement on Monday. &#8220;It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to. If House Republicans add the SAVE Act to the bipartisan appropriations package it will lead to another prolonged Trump government shutdown.”
&#8220;Let&#8217;s be clear, the SAVE Act is not about securing our elections,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It is about suppressing voters. The SAVE Act seeks to disenfranchise millions of American citizens, seize control of our elections, and fan the flames of election skepticism and denialism,” adding that it is “reminiscent of Jim Crow era laws and would expand them to the whole of America.”
“Republicans want to restore Jim Crow and apply it from one end of this country to the other. It will not happen. Democrats will go all out to defeat the SAVE Act and defend free and fair elections.”
Luna responded to the reports of Schumer’s opposition by posting on X that “the SAVE Act is dead on arrival unless Thune removes the filibuster or Democrats break from Schumer to save their own billions of dollars in projects.”
The Senate sent five spending bills and a short-term Department of Homeland Security continuing resolution to the House under a deal between the White House and Schumer to split DHS funding from the other appropriations measures, allowing immigration negotiations to continue without a prolonged government shutdown.
The House had already passed six appropriations bills prior to the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a leftist protester who was killed by federal immigration agents last month. If the House makes further changes to the spending package, it will have to return to the Senate. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told “Meet the Press” on Sunday that he wants to see the shutdown end by Tuesday.
“Our intention is by Tuesday, all agencies of the federal government, except for that one, and then we’ll have two weeks of good faith negotiations, to figure it out,” Johnson told the NBC News program. “Republicans are going do the responsible thing and fund the government.”

The House Rules Committee is set to meet Monday afternoon in hopes to move the package forward. The new deal swaps DHS funding for a continuing resolution that covers money for the agency through Feb. 13, whereas the other bills covered funds through the end of the fiscal year in September.
Homeland Security funding became a flashpoint for Democrats after the killing of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis. Democrats are calling for sweeping changes to the Trump administration&#8217;s immigration policies, with some going so far as to call for the total defunding of Homeland Security.
Their defunding efforts may be fruitless, as the immigration agencies were largely funded by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Still, Democrats seem hopeful that they can leverage the entire department’s funding, which includes the budgets of FEMA and TSA, to push for reform. Schumer and other Democrats are asking for sweeping changes to ICE and Border Patrol, including the ending of masking for agents and the use of judicial warrants as opposed to administrative ones, which could make some arrests much more difficult, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-how-democrats-could-cripple-ice-without-defunding-dhs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> reported.

Prior to Pretti&#8217;s death, the House had approved all of the government spending bills and sent them to the Senate. There are 12 appropriations bills in total, six of which President Donald Trump has already signed.

“A shutdown would risk disaster response funding and more vital resources for the American people,” the statement continued.
As of Thursday morning, details of a potential continuing resolution remain scarce, and even if an agreement is reached, a broader fight is likely to erupt in Congress over what conditions, if any, should be attached to DHS funding. The debate would give lawmakers in both parties an opportunity to advance their priorities.

Earlier this week, Senate Republican Conference Chair Tom Cotton (R-AR) pushed back against the possibility of a “mob veto” by Democrats, as the administration warns that a lapse in funding will harm the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Much of the funding for the president’s immigration goals was already signed into law in July under the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.”
If the government does close, it would be the second time in just three months — and some are still recovering from the nation’s longest government shutdown, which lasted for 43 days in the fall. The Customs and Border Protection shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis could cause Washington to shut the government down for the second time in three months.
Senate Democrats signaled over the weekend that they would not vote for a bill that would fund the federal government through the end of the fiscal year, which contains funding for the Department of Homeland Security. CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement — whose agents were involved in the shooting of Renee Good — both fall under the DHS umbrella.
“After their son was killed in broad daylight, they are now forced to defend him against this administration’s lies,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on X. “It’s another reason why Senate Democrats are united in rejecting this DHS spending bill.”
The House of Representatives already voted on spending bills before adjourning ahead of a major snowstorm descending on the capital. The House is not likely to return in time to avert a partial shutdown should the Senate somehow reach a deal, Punchbowl News reported.
&#8220;The Trump Administration and [Homeland Security Secretary] Kristi Noem are putting undertrained, combative federal agents on the streets with no accountability,” Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) said in a statement on Saturday.

It’s unclear exactly how a shutdown would impact CBP and ICE. Much of the president’s immigration agenda was funded through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, funding that would not be interrupted by a shutdown.
Last year, the United States faced the largest federal government shutdown in history for 43 days over a debate regarding Affordable Care Act subsidies.
Aside from the looming shutdown, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) is requesting testimony from CBP, ICE, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services over “border security and immigration enforcement” in hearings either in February or March, according to letters sent by the congressman on Saturday.
In Minnesota, Homeland Security’s Operation Metro Surge has led to thousands of arrests of people in the country illegally, but it’s also led to serious clashes with anti-ICE protests in the region — and staunch opposition from Democrats in the state.
“They think they can provoke us into abandoning our values. They are wrong. We will keep the peace. We will secure justice for our neighbors. And we will see this occupation end,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) posted to X on Saturday night.
The Trump administration has stated that Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey need to tone down the rhetoric in the state.

After a series of criticisms from Greene — focused primarily on the Trump administration&#8217;s handling of files related to the late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein — Trump attacked the Georgia congresswoman in several Truth Social posts. Calling her &#8220;Marjorie Traitor Greene&#8221; in one instance, he cheered her eventual resignation from Congress as &#8220;good for the country.&#8221;
In the days since, Greene has given a handful of interviews — and they&#8217;ve been progressively less flattering to Trump.
<h4>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez</h4>
The New York firebrand has been a more-or-less constant thorn in the side of Republicans since she was elected, and 2025 has proved to be no different. With the policies championed in her proposed Green New Deal languishing under the weight of Trump&#8217;s regulatory reform, she has turned to jabbing at members of the administration and those who support it via social media.
One such barb was aimed at former collegiate swimmer — and staunch advocate for women and girls — Riley Gaines, who pointed out the dangers of embracing socialism as AOC has.
&#8220;Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth,” Ocasio-Cortez said, referencing the 2022 NCAA championships where Gaines had tied for 5th place with trans-identifying male swimmer Lia Thomas.
Gaines was unperturbed, replying, &#8220;It’s always hilarious when they think they’ve landed a ‘gotcha’ by pointing out I was the 5th-fastest woman *in the nation* yet they conveniently forget the mediocre man who ranked 462nd in the men’s division lol. Misogynistic dunce.&#8221;
Ocasio-Cortez also took to social media to crow about a poll that showed her besting Vice President JD Vance in a potential 2028 match-up. What she didn&#8217;t mention was that the poll was taken in Canada, where socialism has already taken hold — and where no one can vote for her, anyway.
<h4>Mark Kelly</h4>
Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) joined five other members of Congress — all of them veterans of either the Armed Services or the Central Intelligence Agency — to make a video encouraging members of the military to question their orders in real time. Nicknaming them the &#8220;Seditious Six,&#8221; Trump said his administration was prepared to investigate Kelly in particular because, as the only member of the group who retired from the military, he is still subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice and can be recalled to be court-martialed for his actions.
<h4>Chuck Schumer</h4>
Senate Minority Leader <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrats-roast-chuck-schumer-over-shutdown-deal-we-need-new-leadership">Chuck Schumer</a> kept members of his party in line through the longest government shutdown in American history — and despite the fact that he and his party got nothing for their trouble, they still managed to inflict a significant amount of pain on people who either worked for the federal government and were furloughed or were dependent on government assistance.
When the shutdown finally ended, Democrats got none of the things they&#8217;d demanded, and members of Schumer&#8217;s party began to turn on him.
&#8220;Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?&#8221; Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) said at the time.
<h4>Hakeem Jeffries</h4>
House Minority Leader <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-catches-hakeem-jeffries-in-straight-up-lie-about-government-shutdown?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=CNN+Catches+Hakeem+Jeffries+In+Straight-Up+Lie+About+Government+Shutdown">Hakeem Jeffries</a> (D-NY) has almost constantly been at odds with the Trump administration — and his attacks have often been disingenuous at best. After claiming that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had refused to talk to him about bringing the shutdown to an end, Jeffries was forced to admit to CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins that they had, in fact, spoken — and that Johnson had initiated the call.
On another occasion, Jeffries aimed his ire at Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services Administrator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hakeem-jeffries-trashes-dr-oz-gets-hit-with-brutal-fact-check?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Hakeem+Jeffries+Trashes+Dr.+Oz%2C+Gets+Hit+With+Brutal+Fact-Check">Mehmet Oz.</a> He mocked the acclaimed cardiothoracic surgeon and claimed that no one should take him &#8220;seriously.&#8221;
Fox News anchor John Roberts laid out the fact check: &#8220;Just a quick fact check for the minority leader: Mehmet Oz: Undergraduate degree — Harvard; MD — UPenn; MBA — Wharton School; He was a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital before taking the leap into TV.&#8221;
Jeffries did praise Trump for issuing a pardon to Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hakeem-jeffries-sides-with-trump-over-pardon-for-texas-democrat">Henry Cuellar</a> (D-Texas), whose indictment was viewed by a number on both sides of the political aisle as politically motivated — but on balance, he more than earned the sombrero memes in which he was featured.
<h4>Chris Van Hollen</h4>
Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) was at first of many congressional Democrats who sided with dangerous criminal aliens over American citizens, attacking ICE agents for faithfully enforcing federal immigration laws. But when his party and their media cohorts effectively adopted MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia as their cause du jour, it was Van Hollen who took his activism to absurd new heights.
When the criminal illegal alien was deported and sent to El Salvador — an admitted mistake made by the Trump administration, which could legally have deported him to any country other than El Salvador — it was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-border-czar-tears-into-dem-senator-van-hollen-for-el-salvador-trip">Van Hollen</a> who took it upon himself to fly to El Salvador and demand to meet with Abrego Garcia.
<h4>Adam Schiff</h4>
Perhaps the naughtiest of them all, Schiff made the leap from the House to the Senate in January, and although he still hasn&#8217;t delivered the &#8220;evidence&#8221; he swore he had of Trump colluding with Russia, he has poured a fair amount of time and effort into being a bee in the Trump administration&#8217;s bonnet.
Just two days after Trump&#8217;s inauguration, Schiff <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/adam-schiff-complains-bondi-isnt-doing-the-job-his-party-is-blocking-her-from-getting?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Adam+Schiff+Complains+Bondi+Isn’t+Doing+The+Job+His+Party+Is+Blocking+Her+From+Getting">complained</a> in an X post that Pam Bondi — then Trump&#8217;s nominee for attorney general — had not given a thorough review to all of the January 6th pardons. He omitted the fact that his party had stalled Bondi&#8217;s confirmation process — and therefore it was ridiculous to expect her to already be doing the job they were preventing her from getting.
In the months since, Schiff&#8217;s statements have been an exercise in lacking self-awareness.
&#8220;That attitude that you can make a president or a party unsuccessful, no matter what damage it might do to the country, because it’s good politics — we have to get past that ruinous idea,” he said on a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/adam-schiff-claims-lawmakers-shouldnt-use-politics-to-destroy-presidents?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Adam+Schiff+Claims+Lawmakers+Shouldn’t+Use+Politics+To+Destroy+Presidents">recent podcast</a>, omitting his own history of doing exactly that to Trump.
When War Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered strikes on narco-terrorists in the Caribbean, Schiff referred to men who survived the initial strike as &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/adam-schiff-defends-narcoterrorists-claims-they-were-shipwrecked-survivors?author=Virginia+Kruta&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Adam+Schiff+Defends+Narcoterrorists%2C+Claims+They+Were+‘Shipwrecked+Survivors’">shipwreck survivors</a>&#8221; and declared the strikes illegal. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) lashed out at House Democrats who have been critical of the Senate Democrats who voted last week to end the longest government shutdown in history, saying that the pain a longer shutdown would have inflicted on the American people was not worth it.
Kaine joined anchor Kristen Welker on Sunday&#8217;s broadcast of &#8220;Meet the Press,&#8221; and he responded to comments from House members like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) — some of whom have gone so far as to call for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to step down from his leadership role or retire altogether — by effectively telling them to mind their own business.

Welker began with a clip of Ocasio-Cortez, who claimed that the Democrats who voted to end the shutdown were sending a message to voters that &#8220;Democrats are weak&#8221; and then — ignoring the fact that Democrats had been the ones keeping the government from reopening from the start — argued that all Republicans had to do to make them cave was &#8220;hurt working people.&#8221;
Kaine was not having any of that, however, and he said so. &#8220;I have 320,000 federal employees in Virginia, and together with their families that&#8217;s probably 700,000 dependents. Getting them all back to work with two paychecks that they&#8217;ve missed restored, with protections against future firings, you know, some folks like AOC may think that&#8217;s nothing. Virginians think that&#8217;s an awful lot.&#8221;
Kaine went on to ask what some of the others who voted to end the shutdown had asked themselves before changing their votes: &#8220;Would it have been another week of SNAP recipients losing their benefits? Another month of air travelers enduring chaos and even danger?&#8221;
Others in the House, like Khanna, have argued that because the Senate Democrats did not hold out longer, that proved it was time for Schumer to step down. He also suggested that Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) would be good replacements.

What was she thinking?” Also, “Why do women play with their hair when they like a guy?” And here’s another one: “You know how the screen just went dark in the last episode of &#8216;The Sopranos&#8217;? What the hell was that about? I mean, they’re paying the screenwriter good money. Shouldn’t he be able to come up with some kind of ending? And don’t even get me started on &#8216;How I Met Your Mother.'&#8221;
And okay, some of you may have questions about the government shutdown and, holy moly, I can’t even imagine what your lives must be like. But hey, here at the Daily Wire, it’s not our place to mock you for being pathetic, so as part of our mission to give you an in-depth understanding of the news, we’re pleased to provide you with this handy Q&amp;A about the government shutdown.
Q: Why did the government shut down in the first place?
A: The government shut down because Chuck Schumer is the Senate leader of the Democrats, and he&#8217;s a demon.
Q: Wait, really?
A: Yeah! Look at him. With those dead eyes, and the widow’s peak you could cut your wrists with. The guy’s a hell dweller. Probably crawled out of a crevice in the earth somewhere.
Q: But weren’t there, like, political considerations?
A: I dunno. I’m still trying to figure out how Sydney Sweeney looked in the mirror and thought: “Oh good, I’m a super-hot white girl! For the next ten years, I can literally have anything I want. Q: Could we get back to the shutdown? 
A: Sure, you obviously have nothing better to do.
Q: What were the results of the shutdown?
A: During the shutdown, the government couldn’t perform its very important functions like — I don’t know — making speeches and putting up signs and whatnot.
Q: That’s it? They couldn’t make speeches and signs?
A: Signs are actually very important. Otherwise, they tow your car and you’re like, “What did I even do?”
Q: Well, what about healthcare?
A: Right. Democrats want to gradually lure the United States into a government healthcare system like they have in England and Canada, where more and more of your money goes into increasingly outdated medical treatments until finally they have to legalize medically assisted suicide so they can kill patients off in order to keep treatment expenses down. So then, you’re, like, twelve years old and you go to the doctor with a splinter, and he’s like, “Wouldn’t you rather just kill yourself?” The Republicans didn’t want to fund that, so Chuck Schumer closed the government.
Q: Wait, Chuck Schumer wants to suicide 12-year-olds, but that’s demonic… O-o-o-oh, I get what you’re saying.
A: This is why we provide these helpful Q and A’s.
Q: Well, what happens to stuff like taxes during a shutdown?
A: You still have to pay taxes during a shutdown so Congress can get paid.
Q: Get paid for doing what?
A: Well, the government’s shut down, so they’re not doing anything.
Q: So Congress doesn’t do anything, and we still have to give them our money?
A: Correct, and that continues even during the shutdown.
Q: So why exactly did the shutdown end?
A: The shutdown ended because the money for welfare payments ran out, so pretty soon, welfare recipients would’ve had to find jobs. Then to keep their jobs, they’d’ve had to improve their behavior, which would’ve helped them find spouses and start families and increase their sense of self-worth, until they wouldn’t even need Democrats. So basically, the Democrats needed to reopen or they’d become irrelevant.
Q: Well, frankly, I’m glad. I need to get home for Thanksgiving, and when I saw all the delays piling up at airports, I wanted to kill myself.
A: Unfortunately, if you want to kill yourself legally, you’ll just have to wait till the Democrats are back in power.

Topline: The government shutdown appears to be on the verge of finally ending, as both parties debate the future of healthcare, and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) fends off calls for his resignation.
The federal government may finally reopen on Wednesday. The bill broke through the Senate with the help of eight Democrats. That bill will now go to the House, and it is expected to begin voting today at around 4:00 p.m. ET.
This is a major development following the longest government shutdown in American history, and it comes at a time when D.C. is deeply politically divided. There has been a lot of pushback, not only against the Democrats who voted to reopen the government, but also against Minority Leader Schumer, who is now facing calls to step down or even be primaried in 2028.
What does D.C. do next? Once the government is back in operation, the focus will shift back to healthcare, but the debate will look different. During the shutdown, Democrats said they wanted the continuing resolution to be contingent upon continuing subsidies for Obamacare. Now, as part of the Senate deal, Democrats want to bring that discussion back next month, since the government will only be funded through the end of January if the bill passes. The shutdown debate could flare up again if lawmakers don&#8217;t figure this out before funding runs out.
If the subsidies don&#8217;t continue, opponents have said that a coming premium spike is proof that the Affordable Care Act was not sustainable in the first place.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has said that this deal was the Senate’s, and that the House didn&#8217;t make any promises on its end, so there hasn&#8217;t been a commitment yet to finding a solution to Obamacare subsidies.
Trumpcare: There has been discussion on tax-advantaged Health Savings Accounts. President Donald Trump has also floated giving some of the subsidy money back to the American people. Trump has argued that many of these subsidies only benefited large insurance companies.
“Instead of going to the insurance companies, I want the money to go into an account for people where the people buy their own health insurance. If we did that, that would be so exciting. Call it Trumpcare,” the president <a href="https://x.com/_johnnymaga/status/1988038828846670192?s=20">said</a>.

Topline: The FDA is removing “black box” warnings from hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms. The reversal is earning high praise from both the medical establishment and medical outsiders. 
The warnings were slapped on HRT for menopausal and perimenopausal women more than two decades ago by the FDA. But FDA Commissioner Marty Makary says those warnings were unnecessary, harmful, and based on a significantly flawed 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study that connected this treatment to an increase in breast cancer risk.
Why it matters: While currently fewer than 5% of menopausal women take HRT, Dr. Makary says between 50 and 70 million women have been denied or discouraged from taking the treatment since that study was mainstreamed. Makary also says the vast majority of those women were denied life-changing or even life-saving treatment. 
“Women who go through menopause and start hormone replacement therapy have profound short-term and long-term health benefits, including reducing the risk of bone fractures by 50-60% later in life, reducing the risk of fatal heart attacks by 30-50%,” Makary told Morning Wire. “That&#8217;s the number one cause of death in women – and reducing cognitive decline. There may be no medication in the modern era, aside from perhaps antibiotics or vaccines, that can improve the health outcomes of women on a population level more than hormone replacement therapy started within 10 years of the onset of menopause.”
Makary noted that this treatment is for the vast majority of women in this phase of life, though he said there are rare exceptions to that, for example, if a woman currently has breast cancer. Women should talk to their doctors before receiving treatment.
View from the experts: Major medical groups are supporting this. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), which represents more than 60,000 physicians and medical professionals, praised the FDA for empowering women.
The Menopause Society, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, and the National Consumers League, a consumer advocacy organization, also applauded this change from the FDA. Also of note, <a href="https://magazine.hms.harvard.edu/articles/how-gender-bias-medicine-has-shaped-womens-health?utm_source=chatgpt.com">Harvard Medicine Magazine</a> last year acknowledged that this Women’s Health Initiative study “has widely been considered flawed.”

Topline: With the government shutdown poised to end on a sour note for most Democrats, it has become painfully obvious just how eager some in the media were to put their thumbs on the scales. 
The legacy media coverage was biased against Republicans over the shutdown, and the numbers prove it. The Media Research Center conducted a study of the first full month of the shutdown, from October 1 to October 31. It looked at the evening news broadcasts on the three major networks – ABC, CBS, and NBC – and discovered that 87% of the network news coverage during that time had been skewed in favor of the Democrats.
The center evaluates only the statements made by anchors and experts who are supposed to be nonpartisan, which would exclude comments from elected Democrats or Republicans, or from pundits who are decidedly partisan. Using that framework, it found 83 statements about the shutdown that were critical of Republicans and only 12 that were critical of Democrats.
Those same people, despite discussing the shutdown on multiple broadcasts, showed very little interest in discussing why the government was shut down or who repeatedly voted against the clean continuing resolution that would have reopened the government. According to the center, “On both ABC and CBS, only 12.5 percent of reports on either network mentioned this basic detail. On NBC, that fact was included in just 31 percent of newscasts.”
View from the media: On CNN, the network is laying it on thick against Schumer and highlighting the blowback against him within his own party. CNN pollster Harry Enten sounded off: “ What about Democrats nationwide feeling about Chuck Schumer? I think the word of the day is terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible.”
The hosts of ABC’s “The View” have been gunning for Schumer since March because, as they said, he “caved” to avoid a shutdown early in Trump’s term. They re-upped calls for him to step aside on Monday, and on Tuesday, they spent some time yelling at Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman for voting in favor of his constituents not starving.
There’s a bit of a pile-on effect happening right now. The argument appears to be that the compromise has given President Trump yet another win, which is something Democrats and many in the legacy media hate to do.
