A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that the Justice Department established probable cause to charge former CNN host Don Lemon and four others over the anti-ICE church storming in Minneapolis last weekend. The appeals court, however, declined to force a lower court judge to sign arrest warrants.
The ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth District was unsealed on Saturday after the Justice Department asked the appeals court to force a lower district court in Minnesota to sign the five arrest warrants. The ruling did not make the names of the five defendants public, but CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/appeals-court-don-lemon-protest-minnesota-probable-cause/">reported</a> that its sources confirmed one of the defendants is Lemon. The Justice Department <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doj-vows-to-pursue-don-lemon-charges-to-the-ends-of-the-earth?author=Jennie+Taer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=DOJ+Vows+To+Pursue+Don+Lemon+Charges+%E2%80%98To+The+Ends+Of+The+Earth%E2%80%99">vowed</a> on Friday to pursue charges against Lemon &#8220;to the ends of the Earth.&#8221;
While Friday&#8217;s ruling supported the Trump administration&#8217;s pursuit of charging Lemon on paper, it did not solve the Justice Department&#8217;s request. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon responded to the ruling, <a href="https://x.com/AAGDhillon/status/2015140496344314364">writing</a> on X, &#8220;Stay tuned 🤨.&#8221; The Justice Department could now seek a grand jury indictment or represent the charges to a magistrate judge.&#8221;
Lemon joined a large group of anti-ICE protesters who stormed Cities Church in Minneapolis last Sunday during the worship service because one of the church&#8217;s pastors is believed to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer. Three of the anti-ICE agitators who organized the church storming have been arrested by the FBI, including Black Lives Matter activist Nekima Levy Armstrong.
Lemon&#8217;s attorney argued that he is protected under the First Amendment since he was with the anti-ICE agitators to cover the church storming as an independent journalist. The Justice Department, however, argues that Lemon was coordinating with leaders of the anti-ICE group before the church storming.
“Freedom of the press extends to a lot of different areas,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said earlier this week. “It does not extend to somebody just trespassing and being embedded with a group of rioters and being part of the group that storms inside of a church.&#8221;
Magistrate Judge Doug Micko refused to sign the arrest warrant for Lemon, saying that federal prosecutors failed to present enough evidence to justify his arrest.
The Trump administration is pursuing charges against Lemon and others who participated in the storming of Cities Church through the FACE Act, which penalizes people for interfering with Americans who are exercising their right to religious freedom. The FACE act was used by the Biden administration to go after pro-lifers who were accused of blocking access to abortion clinics.
News of the appeals court ruling broke as Minneapolis erupts into chaos again after an armed man was shot and killed by federal agents on Saturday morning. Video showed federal officers attempting to detain a man on the street during what the Department of Homeland Security said was a &#8220;targeted operation&#8221; for an illegal immigrant &#8220;wanted for violent assault.&#8221; The man was armed with a loaded &#8220;semi-automatic handgun&#8221; and was shot and killed by a federal agent who was fearing for his life and the lives of his fellow agents, according to Homeland Security.

The lawsuit <a href="https://www.michigan.gov/ag/news/press-releases/2026/01/23/attorney-general-nessel-files-lawsuit-against-fossil-fuel-defendants">alleges</a> that BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, and the oil industry association, the American Petroleum Institute, acted &#8220;as a cartel&#8221; to go after renewable energy sources and &#8220;restrain the emergence of electric vehicles.&#8221; The alleged conspiracy has caused Michigan residents to &#8220;suffer artificially high home and transportation energy costs,&#8221; according to Nessel.
&#8220;Specifically, by suppressing innovation and investment in renewable energy, EVs, and EV infrastructure, Defendants have artificially reduced the output of electricity as a substitute for gasoline and other energy sources,&#8221; the lawsuit states. &#8220;This restraint not only eliminated competitive pressure that would have lowered prices, but also deprived Michigan consumers of meaningful choice, forcing them to buy primary and transportation energy products at supracompetitive prices and with additional costs in the form of negative externalities.&#8221;
Critics of the EV push have argued the opposite of what Michigan claims in the lawsuit, saying that in recent years, the federal government and some state governments have artificially propped up the EV market in an attempt to encourage Americans to give up gas-powered vehicles.
American automakers, such as Michigan-based Ford and General Motors, have recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ford-delays-production-of-new-electric-vehicles-by-years-as-consumers-sour-on-evs">dialed back</a> their investments in EV production due to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gms-ev-struggles-trigger-mass-layoffs-in-three-states">low demand</a> and high manufacturing costs. Nessel&#8217;s lawsuit accuses the oil companies of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, and the Michigan Antitrust Reform Act, which prohibit monopolies and anti-competitive practices. The state of Michigan is demanding a jury trial.

At least 14 states have declared a state of emergency as they brace for snow, record cold, and potentially crippling ice from a winter storm that will stretch from New Mexico to Maine.
Around 172 million people are in the storm&#8217;s path this weekend, with the ice being the biggest threat. Up to an inch of ice is possible in some spots in the Southeast, which is enough to down trees and power lines, potentially knocking out power for days. The massive storm is <a href="https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/rare-potentially-historic-major-winter-storm-wallop-millions-from-south-east-coast">expected</a> to sweep through much of the Great Plains, Southeast, Midwest, and most of the Eastern part of the United States on Saturday and Sunday. Following the storm, a polar vortex will bring Arctic air to many states, according to the forecast.
&#8220;Record Cold Wave expected to hit 40 States. Rarely seen anything like it before,&#8221; Trump wrote on Truth Social. &#8220;Could the Environmental Insurrectionists please explain — WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING???&#8221;
Environmental activists argue that global warming is a continuing problem and point to recent <a href="https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-temperature">increases</a> in the average global surface temperature. Many climate alarmists will also point to major weather events, such as hurricanes and floods, as evidence that global warming is the single biggest threat facing the world.
Unusually cold weather has also been tied to climate change. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration <a href="https://cpo.noaa.gov/research-links-extreme-cold-weather-in-the-united-states-to-arctic-warming/#:~:text=Accelerated%20Arctic%20warming%2C%20known%20as,cold%20air%20can%20dip%20south.">cited</a> a 2021 study that found climate change increases Arctic polar vortices, which can bring record cold temperatures to the southern United States.
Trump has blasted the climate change and global warming narrative on numerous occasions. Last year, while speaking at the United Nations, Trump called the climate change narrative &#8220;the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world.&#8221;

President Donald Trump filed a $5 billion lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase and the bank&#8217;s CEO Jamie Dimon on Thursday, alleging that it closed Trump&#8217;s accounts in 2021 over &#8220;woke&#8221; motivations following the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
The suit argues that JPMorgan, one of the largest banks in the United States, violated its own principles when it terminated multiple accounts belonging to Trump and his business.
&#8220;Plaintiffs are confident that JPMC’s unilateral decision came about as a result of political and social motivations, and JPMC’s unsubstantiated, &#8216;woke&#8217; beliefs that it needed to distance itself from President Trump and his conservative political views,&#8221; the lawsuit <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/985579226/Trump-suing-JPM-and-Dimon#download&amp;from_embed">states</a>. &#8220;In essence, JPMC debanked Plaintiffs’ Accounts because it believed that the political tide at the moment favored doing so.&#8221;
The lawsuit was filed by Trump&#8217;s attorney, Alejandro Brito, in a Florida state court in Miami, Fox Business <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/trump-sues-jpmorgan-chase-ceo-jamie-dimon-5b-over-alleged-political-debanking">reported</a>. The suit says that on February 19, 2021, JPMorgan notified Trump and his business that their accounts would be closed in two months, adding that the bank &#8220;did not provide Plaintiffs any recourse, remedy, or alternative — its decision was final and unequivocal.&#8221;
&#8220;Because JPMC did not provide Plaintiffs and their affiliated entities with any advance notice before February 19, 2021, and unilaterally debanked Plaintiffs by terminating Plaintiffs’ Accounts, Plaintiffs suffered considerable financial harm and losses caused not only by the interruption to their access to JPMC’s banking services, but also by the devastating impact on Plaintiffs’ ability to transact and access their monies, and by having to enter into less favorable business arrangements with other financial institutions,&#8221; Trump&#8217;s lawyer argues.
The suit also alleges that JPMorgan placed Trump and his business on a &#8220;blacklist,&#8221; which &#8220;is accessible by federally regulated banks and is comprised of individuals and entities that have a history of malfeasant acts and are otherwise non-compliant with applicable banking rules and regulations.&#8221;
JPMorgan has also been <a href="https://adflegal.org/article/chase-bank-policy-change-adfs-latest-success-story-corporate-america/">accused</a> of debanking conservative groups such as the National Committee for Religious Freedom, which was founded by former Republican Senator and Ambassador Sam Brownback. The bank denies accusations that it has closed accounts for political or religious reasons.
The bank said on Thursday that it is confident that Trump&#8217;s lawsuit against it will not succeed.
“While we regret President Trump has sued us, we believe the suit has no merit,&#8221; JPMorgan said in a statement shared with The Daily Wire.
The statement continues, “We do close accounts because they create legal or regulatory risk for the company. We regret having to do so but often rules and regulatory expectations lead us to do so. We have been asking both this Administration and prior administrations to change the rules and regulations that put us in this position, and we support the Administration’s efforts to prevent the weaponization of the banking sector.”
After backlash to JPMorgan&#8217;s decision to debank Trump and other conservatives, the bank <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/major-win-jpmorgan-chase-ends-political-debanking">changed</a> some of its policies and clarified that customers could not be discriminated against for political or religious views. Dimon said last year that his bank does not &#8220;debank people because of political or religious affiliations.&#8221;
&#8220;But there are a lot of things that can be fixed. We should fix them,&#8221; Dimon <a href="https://subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2025/02/jamie-dimon-regulators-pretty-much-to-blame-for-debanking-00204094">added</a>. &#8220;The rules and requirements are so onerous, and it does cause people to be debanked, who in my opinion, should not be debanked.&#8221;

Shortly after a private meeting with President Donald Trump in Davos on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky walked out onto the World Economic Forum stage and blasted European leaders for trying to &#8220;change&#8221; Trump instead of focusing on defending themselves from global threats such as Russia and China.
Zelensky <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_SohZrJOKk">said</a> that Europe seems to be stuck in &#8220;Groundhog Day,&#8221; referring to the 1993 film featuring Bill Murray. He argued that European powers have been repeating the same actions &#8220;for weeks, months, and of course, for years,&#8221; adding, &#8220;Every forum like this one proves it.&#8221;
&#8220;Just last year, here in Davos, I ended my speech with the words, &#8216;Europe needs to know how to defend itself.&#8217; A year has passed, and nothing has changed,&#8221; Zelensky said.
“Instead of taking the lead in defending freedom worldwide, especially when America’s focus shifts elsewhere, Europe looks lost trying to convince the U.S. president to change,” the Ukrainian president continued, adding, &#8220;Europe still feels more like geography, history, a tradition, not a real political force, not a great power.&#8221;
Zelensky highlighted Trump&#8217;s capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and America&#8217;s seizure of sanctioned oil tankers linked to Venezuela and asked why European powers could not do the same with Russian oil tankers.
&#8220;Why can President Trump stop tankers from the shadow fleet and seize oil, but Europe doesn&#8217;t?&#8221; Zelensky asked. &#8220;Russian oil is being transported right along European shores. That oil funds the war against Ukraine. That oil helps destabilize Europe.&#8221;
Zelensky also mentioned Trump&#8217;s push for Greenland and criticized Europe&#8217;s response to the issue. Trump&#8217;s ramped-up effort to acquire Greenland has been a major focus of this year&#8217;s World Economic Forum as European leaders scramble to respond to the president&#8217;s plan. Many NATO countries deployed a small contingent of troops to Greenland to conduct military exercises as Trump discussed annexing the territory.
Zelensky slammed European leaders over the move.
“If you send 30 or 40 soldiers to Greenland, what is that for?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;What message does it send? What’s the message to Putin? To China? And even more importantly, what message does it send to Denmark? You either declare that European bases will protect the region from Russia and China &#8230; or you risk not being taken seriously, because 30 or 40 soldiers will not protect anything.”
The Ukrainian president then called on European countries to build up their fighting forces, and suggested that NATO is too reliant on the United States.
&#8220;Europe needs united armed forces that can truly defend Europe,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Today, Europe relies only on the belief that if danger comes, NATO will act, but no one has really seen the alliance in action.&#8221;
&#8220;Right now, NATO exists thanks to the belief that the United States will act, that it will not stand aside and will help,&#8221; Zelensky continued. &#8220;But what if it doesn&#8217;t?&#8221;

Trump spoke to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos on Wednesday and announced shortly after the meeting that they worked out a &#8220;framework&#8221; for a deal on Greenland. Rutte confirmed that the United States and NATO have made significant progress toward securing an agreement covering the large territory that Denmark oversees. It remains unclear if Greenland and Denmark support the deal currently under negotiation. Danish leaders have strongly opposed Trump&#8217;s push to acquire the territory, while Greenlandic leaders have said they don&#8217;t want to become part of the United States.
Trump has been pushing for the United States to acquire Greenland since returning to the White House last January, and he has increased pressure on Greenland, Denmark, and other European nations over the issue in recent weeks. The president believes that Greenland is essential for U.S. national security, arguing that China and Russia will take over the territory if the United States doesn&#8217;t.
Trump told Bartiromo on Thursday that it&#8217;s still possible that the United States will end up controlling Greenland. During his speech at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, Trump said he would not use military force to annex the territory.
While Trump says national security is the main reason for his desire to acquire Greenland, rare-earth minerals also play a role in his push. Rare-earth minerals were also part of the framework agreement with NATO, the president said. Trump&#8217;s U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Mike Waltz, who began in the administration as the president&#8217;s national security adviser, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/greenland-important-us-says-trumps-pick-national-security-adviser-2025-01-09/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last January that the United States needed Greenland for its &#8220;critical minerals&#8221; as well as national security.
Greenland holds large deposits of rare earth minerals that could play a key role in America&#8217;s push to ramp up rare earth mining and end its dependence on China. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday that European nations will have to increase their military presence in the Arctic region as part of a Greenland deal being negotiated by President Donald Trump.
Rutte told Reuters at the World Economic Forum that, following his Wednesday meeting with Trump, NATO must work through a plan to increase security around Greenland.
&#8220;I have no doubt we can do this quite fast. Certainly I would hope for 2026, I hope even early in 2026,&#8221; Rutte said.

Greenland&#8217;s rare earth minerals were also part of the framework agreement, the president said. Trump said on Wednesday, however, that rare earth minerals aren&#8217;t the main reason he wants the territory.

Asked if NATO allies could trust Trump, Rutte replied, &#8220;You can always take Donald Trump at his word.&#8221;
The framework deal agreed upon by Trump and Rutte is not a finalized agreement and will only kickstart serious negotiations on Greenland, according to Trump. The president did not say whether Greenland or Denmark, which oversees the semi-autonomous territory, agreed to the framework deal.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the talks moved forward on Wednesday.
&#8220;It is still a difficult and serious situation, but progress has also been made in the sense that we have now got things where they need to be. Namely that we can discuss how we promote common security in the Arctic region,&#8221; Frederiksen said.
Trump suggested that his plan for the &#8220;Golden Dome&#8221; missile defense system was also a significant point of the discussions with NATO on Greenland.
&#8220;Further information will be made available as discussions progress,” Trump added. “Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me.&#8221;

After the shooting death of Minneapolis resident Renee Good on January 7, Frey told ICE to “get the f*ck out of Minneapolis.” Good was shot and killed after she was confronted by federal law enforcement agents when she parked her vehicle in front of them. She then drove her vehicle toward an ICE officer after another officer attempted to open her car door.
After the fatal shooting, the mayor said that ICE agents were “causing chaos” in Minneapolis and suggested that residents were asking for the city police to “fight” ICE agents “on the streets” before he urged residents to remain peaceful.
Last week in Minneapolis, tensions escalated following a confrontation between federal immigration agents and agitators after an ICE agent fired defensive shots during an operation, leaving a Venezuelan illegal immigrant with non-life-threatening injuries, federal officials said. Agitators showed up on the scene and threw fireworks at law enforcement officers and vandalized federal law enforcement vehicles, and in at least one case, broke into a federal vehicle.
On Wednesday night, Frey doubled down on the city&#8217;s refusal to cooperate with ICE.
“We will not [cooperate],” Frey told Cuomo. &#8220;And there’s a good reason, by the way, that we won’t. And it’s not just the moral imperative here. It’s also the fact that I want our police officers focusing on safety. I want our police officers arresting perpetrators of violent crime and preventing carjackings from taking place and doing that basic work of 911 response.”
The Trump administration has said that the surge in immigration agents in Minneapolis is due to city and state leaders refusing to work with ICE and hand over detained illegal immigrants. A federal judge temporarily blocked the Justice Department from searching Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson&#8217;s devices, which were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-searches-washington-post-reporters-home-in-classified-docs-probe-leaker-behind-bars">confiscated</a> under an FBI search warrant last week as part of a federal investigation into leaked classified materials.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William Porter said on Wednesday that federal prosecutors cannot search Natanson&#8217;s devices as he weighs whether the government must turn the devices back over to the reporter, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/us-judge-temporarily-blocks-review-material-seized-washington-post-reporter-2026-01-21/">reported</a>. Natanson and the Post argue that the FBI&#8217;s seizure of Natanson&#8217;s devices violate the First Amendment.
Porter said that Natanson and the Post “demonstrated good cause in their filings to maintain the status quo” until he can fully review the case. The judge also ordered the government to respond to the Post&#8217;s legal filing by January 28, with a hearing scheduled for early next month, the Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/01/21/washington-post-hannah-natanson-search-court-filing/">reported</a>.
Journalists who publish classified information are protected under U.S. law, provided they obtained the classified material without coercion and did not ask anyone to break the law.
The FBI seized two laptops, a phone, and a Garmin watch from Natanson as part of an investigation into a government contractor accused of leaking classified government materials. Natanson is not the target of the investigation, which is focused on Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a contractor with top-secret security clearance who allegedly took classified intelligence reports to his home.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said last week that Natanson was reporting on classified information that was “illegally leaked” by a “Pentagon contractor.” Bondi added that the accused leaker, whom she did not publicly identify, is in jail.
Natanson focuses on “covering the Trump administration’s reshaping of the government&#8221; and was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team at the Post. She has described herself as “the federal government whisperer” and wrote in an article published last month that she connected with more than 1,000 sources within the Trump administration after posting her phone number to an online forum for federal government employees. She said federal workers who reached out to her often expressed frustration with the administration.
The Washington Post condemned the federal government&#8217;s search of Natanson&#8217;s home and seizure of her devices.
“The outrageous seizure of our reporter’s confidential newsgathering materials chills speech, cripples reporting, and inflicts irreparable harm every day the government keeps its hands on these materials,&#8221; the Post said.
Last year, Bondi ended a policy implemented under former President Joe Biden that prohibited federal agencies from searching reporters’ devices to identify a leaker. Bondi said that under her leadership, federal authorities would search reporters’ devices and records only when necessary and after all other investigative avenues had been exhausted.
