A federal judge temporarily blocked the Justice Department from searching Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson&#8217;s devices, which were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-searches-washington-post-reporters-home-in-classified-docs-probe-leaker-behind-bars">confiscated</a> under an FBI search warrant last week as part of a federal investigation into leaked classified materials.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William Porter said on Wednesday that federal prosecutors cannot search Natanson&#8217;s devices as he weighs whether the government must turn the devices back over to the reporter, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/us-judge-temporarily-blocks-review-material-seized-washington-post-reporter-2026-01-21/">reported</a>. Natanson and the Post argue that the FBI&#8217;s seizure of Natanson&#8217;s devices violate the First Amendment.
Porter said that Natanson and the Post “demonstrated good cause in their filings to maintain the status quo” until he can fully review the case. The judge also ordered the government to respond to the Post&#8217;s legal filing by January 28, with a hearing scheduled for early next month, the Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/01/21/washington-post-hannah-natanson-search-court-filing/">reported</a>.
Journalists who publish classified information are protected under U.S. law, provided they obtained the classified material without coercion and did not ask anyone to break the law.
The FBI seized two laptops, a phone, and a Garmin watch from Natanson as part of an investigation into a government contractor accused of leaking classified government materials. Natanson is not the target of the investigation, which is focused on Aurelio Perez-Lugones, a contractor with top-secret security clearance who allegedly took classified intelligence reports to his home.
Attorney General Pam Bondi said last week that Natanson was reporting on classified information that was “illegally leaked” by a “Pentagon contractor.” Bondi added that the accused leaker, whom she did not publicly identify, is in jail.
Natanson focuses on “covering the Trump administration’s reshaping of the government&#8221; and was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team at the Post. She has described herself as “the federal government whisperer” and wrote in an article published last month that she connected with more than 1,000 sources within the Trump administration after posting her phone number to an online forum for federal government employees. She said federal workers who reached out to her often expressed frustration with the administration.
The Washington Post condemned the federal government&#8217;s search of Natanson&#8217;s home and seizure of her devices.
“The outrageous seizure of our reporter’s confidential newsgathering materials chills speech, cripples reporting, and inflicts irreparable harm every day the government keeps its hands on these materials,&#8221; the Post said.
Last year, Bondi ended a policy implemented under former President Joe Biden that prohibited federal agencies from searching reporters’ devices to identify a leaker. Bondi said that under her leadership, federal authorities would search reporters’ devices and records only when necessary and after all other investigative avenues had been exhausted.

Newsom has been in Davos during the World Economic Forum this week, where he has spoken to the media and bashed President Trump. After Trump delivered a speech to world leaders on Wednesday, Newsom called the speech &#8220;remarkably boring&#8221; and &#8220;remarkably insignificant.&#8221; On Tuesday, the California governor ripped world leaders for what he viewed as actions appeasing Trump.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he has &#8220;formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland&#8221; after a &#8220;very productive meeting&#8221; with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump met with Rutte in Davos shortly after speaking at the World Economic Forum and doubling down on his push to acquire Greenland. The president said that in light of the &#8220;framework&#8221; for the deal, he will suspend the additional tariffs he had planned to impose on February 1 on European countries that oppose his push for Greenland.

The European Union, one of America&#8217;s largest trading partners, voted on Wednesday to pause a trade deal with the United States that was initially agreed upon last summer. The finalization of the major trade deal is now uncertain over the bloc&#8217;s opposition to President Donald Trump&#8217;s efforts to acquire Greenland.
European Parliament member Bernd Lange said that Trump&#8217;s plans to impose a 10% tariff on European countries that oppose his Greenland push go against the framework of the U.S.-E.U. trade deal, CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/european-lawmakers-suspend-us-trade-deal-amid-greenland-tariff-tensions.html">reported</a>. Lange pointed to Trump&#8217;s remarks at the World Economic Forum on Wednesday, when the president said that he would continue to push for control of Greenland and called for &#8220;immediate negotiations.&#8221;
“I guess he didn’t revise his position,&#8221; Lange said. &#8220;He wants to have Greenland as part of the United States as quick as possible.”
Lange, the chair of Parliament’s International Trade Committee, added in a statement that the European Union will pause its work on the trade deal &#8220;until the US decides to re-engage on a path of cooperation rather than confrontation,&#8221; Fox Business <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/european-parliament-halts-work-us-trade-deal-response-trump-greenland-push">reported</a>. While the United States and the European Union agreed to the trade deal&#8217;s framework last year, it can&#8217;t go into effect until the European Parliament gives final approval.
During his speech, Trump said he would not use military force to take over Greenland, which Lange called a positive development, but the European Parliament member added that until Trump takes the additional tariff threat off the table, “There will be no possibility of compromise.” Lange called Trump&#8217;s tariff threats “an attack against the economic and territorial sovereignty of the European Union.”
Trump imposed tariffs on European countries shortly after being sworn in last year as part of his massive &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariff agenda, and the European Union responded with tariffs on U.S. goods. The White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2025/08/joint-statement-on-a-united-states-european-union-framework-on-an-agreement-on-reciprocal-fair-and-balanced-trade/">announced</a> a trade agreement with the European Union last August, saying that the bloc &#8220;intends to eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and to provide preferential market access for a wide range of U.S. seafood and agricultural goods.&#8221; As part of the deal&#8217;s framework, the Trump administration agreed to drop the tariff rate on the European Union to 15%.
European countries have roundly criticized Trump over his plan to take over Greenland, but the president continues to argue that the United States needs the territory for national security. Greenland controls its own internal affairs, but Denmark oversees the territory and guarantees its security.
While speaking in front of world leaders in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, Trump said the United States needs Greenland to stop the &#8220;bad guys.&#8221; Trump has repeatedly claimed that China and Russia have their eyes set on conquering Greenland, which would threaten U.S. and global security.
&#8220;All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland, where we&#8217;ve already had it as a trustee, but respectfully returned it back to Denmark not long ago after we defeated the Germans, the Japanese, the Italians and others in World War II,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;We gave it back to them.&#8221;
&#8220;So we want a piece of ice for world protection,&#8221; Trump added. &#8220;And they won’t give it. &#8230; They have a choice: you can say yes, and we will be very appreciative, or you can say no. And, we will remember.&#8221;

President Donald Trump urged Congress on Wednesday to pass legislation capping credit card interest rates at 10% for the next year, a proposal that has drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers.
Trump pressed Congress to take action on credit card interest rates during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Last week, the president pressured banks and credit card companies to lower interest rates for one year, but he didn&#8217;t address how he would force them to comply. A deadline had been set for Jan. 20, but institutions have yet to follow Trump&#8217;s directive.
&#8220;The profit margin for credit card companies now exceeds 50%, and they charge Americans interest rates of 28%, 30%, 31%, 32%. Whatever happened to usury?&#8221; Trump <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2013983796039647649">said</a> on Wednesday. &#8220;So, to help our citizens recover from the Biden disaster all caused by this horrible president, I&#8217;m asking Congress to cap credit card interest rates at 10% for one year.&#8221;
&#8220;And this will help millions of Americans save for a home,&#8221; he added.
Leftist Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who has pushed for capping credit card interest rates, said last week that Trump <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/14/warren-trump-credit-card-interest-rate-affordability.html">called her</a> to discuss the issue. Warren said that she told Trump &#8220;he had not lifted a finger to try to get something through on credit card interest rate caps.”
Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Republican Josh Hawley of Missouri also support the idea. Both senators introduced a bill last year to cap credit card interest rates at 10% for five years. Leftist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Florida Republican Anna Paulina Luna introduced a similar bill in the House, but the legislation has not made any progress in Congress.
When Trump publicly floated the idea of capping interest rates last week, Republican leaders in the Senate and House poured cold water on the proposal. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said last Tuesday, &#8220;The president is the ideas guy,” adding, “I wouldn’t get too spun up about ideas that are out of the box, that are proposed or suggested,&#8221; POLITICO <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/01/13/trump-credit-cards-congress-republicans-00725477">reported</a>.
&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to be very careful if you go forward in that,&#8221; Johnson continued. &#8220;In our zeal to bring down costs, you don&#8217;t want to have negative secondary effects. The problem is, if you do that, then the credit card companies, the negative secondary effect is that they would just stop lending money, and maybe they cap what people are able to borrow at a very low amount.&#8221;
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said, “That’s not something I’m out there advocating for.&#8221; Thune told NBC News that he believes Trump is getting bad advice.
&#8220;He may be getting advice on some of those issues, like, for example, the 10% cap on credit cards,” he said. “Don’t know where that came from. I don’t know. I don’t know the answer.”
Now that Trump has called on Congress to act on capping credit card interest rates, Republican leaders could find themselves in a tougher spot if they continue to publicly oppose his plan.
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who is also in Davos, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/jamie-dimon-trump-credit-card-rate-cap-vermont-massachusetts.html">said</a> on Wednesday that a cap on credit card interest rates &#8220;would be an economic disaster.&#8221;
“In the worst case, you’d have a drastic reduction of the credit card business” for 80% of Americans, Dimon said, according to CNBC. He then quipped that the United States should test the idea in Warren&#8217;s and Sanders&#8217; home states of Massachusetts and Vermont, &#8220;and see what happens.&#8221; The banker added that those on &#8220;the Left&#8221; who push for price controls “will learn a real lesson, and the people crying the most won’t be the credit card companies.&#8221;
“It’ll be the restaurants, the retailers, the travel companies, the schools, the municipalities, because people miss their water payments,” Dimon said. “It would be something else to watch.”

Exactly one year into President Donald Trump&#8217;s second term, the economy remains a top concern for voters, and the president believes his administration is doing enough to address so-called affordability issues, but is failing to promote that success to combat &#8220;fake news.&#8221;
Trump spoke to reporters in the White House briefing room on Tuesday, highlighting his biggest wins so far in his second term. <a href="https://x.com/PhilipWegmann/status/2013729430741365212">Asked</a> by RealClearPolitics reporter Philip Melanchthon Wegmann if economic woes are still pressing down on Americans or if the economy is a messaging issue for the White House, Trump replied, &#8220;A lot of people are listening to the fake news a little bit.&#8221;
&#8220;And I&#8217;m not blaming everybody. I blame ourselves,&#8221; Trump added. &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve done a much better job than we were able to promote. We&#8217;re not promoting. We&#8217;re doing a great job and sort of letting the promotion take care of itself.&#8221;
&#8220;But if you look at prices, compared to a year or a year-and-a-half ago, you look at the Biden prices, they were way up through the sky,&#8221; Trump continued. &#8220;And they use the word &#8216;affordability,&#8217; they just say &#8216;affordability&#8217; and they don&#8217;t talk about it. They created the affordability problem, and we are solving it. We have solved a lot of it.&#8221;
Addressing the economy, along with immigration, have been the biggest issues for the president since he was sworn in last January. In his first year back in the White House, Trump has rewritten global trade with his unprecedented tariffs, which have resulted in billions of dollars of commitments from countries and companies to ramp up manufacturing in the United States.
It will take time before those commitments materialize, however, and in the meantime, Trump&#8217;s tariffs are hitting Americans&#8217; wallets in some cases. Grocery items such as beef, coffee, and some fruits jumped thanks to the president&#8217;s tariffs on nearly all foreign imports. After some concerning election results for Republicans in November, Trump began to more aggressively address the economy, and he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-rolls-back-tariffs-on-dozens-of-food-imports-heres-what-will-be-affected">rolled back</a> tariffs on numerous grocery items and agricultural products.
Under Trump, other grocery items have dropped in price as inflation steadied around 3% for most of the past year. Egg <a href="https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/eggs-us">prices</a> are down over 13% since last year and reached their lowest level since 2019, according to Trading Economics. <a href="https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/poultry">Poultry</a> prices have also dropped over 12% since last year. Gas prices nationwide have tumbled since Trump took office, with the current U.S. average down over 15 cents per gallon compared to this time last year, according to <a href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/gas-prices-nudge-higher-remain-lower-than-last-year/">AAA</a>.
Trump made sure to mention the drop in gas prices during the briefing on Tuesday afternoon, saying, &#8220;Everybody in this room agrees that gasoline prices are way down. When that happens, everything else goes down.&#8221;
The Trump administration has also floated some other policies to address the economic pinch that many Americans are feeling, such as allowing Americans to tap into their 401k penalty-free to purchase a home. Last week, President Trump demanded that credit card companies cap interest rates at 10%, an idea that has been criticized by many conservatives. The administration has also promised that Americans would see massive tax refunds this year thanks to the president&#8217;s tax policies.

The Canadian military recently modeled a hypothetical American invasion of the country and reviewed different responses to the United States deploying troops across the border, Canadian outlet The Globe and Mail <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-military-models-canadian-response-to-hypothetical-american-invasion/">reported</a> on Tuesday.
The Globe and Mail cited two senior government officials who said the Canadian military is working on a step-by-step plan to respond to a U.S. incursion. The officials reportedly stressed that the model is not a specific military plan, adding that it remains unlikely that the United States would actually launch an offensive operation against its neighbor to the north.
Canada&#8217;s reported preparations come as President Donald Trump ramps up his efforts to acquire Greenland and continues to float the idea of taking control of Canada. In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115925888562624963">shared</a> a photo of an Oval Office meeting with leaders of European nations, and in the background, the image was altered to show a map of the United States controlling Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela.

The United States, meanwhile, fields roughly 1.3 million active-duty troops and commands the world&#8217;s most sophisticated air power.
To fend off a hypothetical U.S. attack, Canada would rely on small militias of volunteer or civilian fighters, The Globe and Mail reported. The militias would focus on ambushing U.S. forces and using drone attacks. Some of the tactics would mirror how the Taliban fought American and Canadian troops in Afghanistan during the West&#8217;s 20-year occupation of the Middle East country, one of the government officials told the Canadian outlet.
Canada, a NATO member, could also rely on its European allies if its sovereignty is threatened.
“You know if you come after Canada, you are going to have the world coming after you, even more than Greenland. People do care about what happens to Canada, unlike Venezuela,” retired Canadian Major General David Fraser told The Globe and Mail. “You could actually see German ships and British planes in Canada to reinforce the country’s sovereignty.”
While Canada prepares a plan for how to fight back against a potential American invasion, the nation&#8217;s military maintains a working relationship with the U.S. military. Aircraft from NORAD, the joint U.S.-Canada aerospace defense alliance, are set to <a href="https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/article/norad-aircraft-to-arrive-in-greenland-for-long-planned-activities-canada-us-command/">arrive</a> in Greenland this week for &#8220;long-planned &#8230; activities&#8221; focused on the defense of North America.
Early into his second term, Trump frequently floated the idea of Canada becoming the &#8220;51st state.&#8221; Shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took over as the country&#8217;s leader, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-tells-newly-elected-canadian-pm-never-say-never-to-canadian-statehood">said</a> “it would be much better for Canada” to become part of the United States, prompting Carney to shoot back and say that Canada “won’t be for sale, ever.”
In May, Trump said that the United States would protect Canada under the president&#8217;s proposed &#8220;Golden Dome&#8221; missile defense system for a $61 billion fee. Or, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-canada-considering-offer-to-become-cherished-51st-state">offered</a> to provide missile defense for Canada for &#8220;ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State.&#8221;
Trump also enraged Canadian leaders and residents shortly after being sworn in for his second term when he imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian products.
As Trump focuses on acquiring Greenland, America&#8217;s NATO allies are scrambling to negotiate with the United States while also standing firm on red lines they have drawn for Greenland. Multiple NATO countries have sent troops to Greenland to conduct military exercises amid Trump&#8217;s threats to take over the territory. Canada is also considering sending a small contingent of soldiers to Greenland to take part in the exercises, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canada-could-send-small-contingent-troops-greenland-says-source-2026-01-19/">reported</a>.

Trump also <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115926107400617491">shared</a> a screenshot of a text message he received from Rutte, in which the NATO secretary general praised Trump for his work in securing a <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jan/19/syria-declares-victory-ceasefire-kurdish-led-force">ceasefire</a> in Syria and promised to find &#8220;a way forward on Greenland.&#8221;
&#8220;Mr. President, dear Donald — what you accomplished in Syria today is incredible. I will use my media engagements in Davos to highlight your work there, in Gaza, and in Ukraine,&#8221; Rutte added in the message. &#8220;I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland. Can&#8217;t wait to see you. Yours, Mark.&#8221;
Rutte&#8217;s friendly message to Trump comes as America&#8217;s European allies try to figure out how to respond to Trump&#8217;s push to control Greenland, a plan Europe has strongly denounced. Since Trump has ramped up his effort to acquire Greenland, NATO nations deployed troops to the territory last week for a military exercise.
Over the weekend, Trump announced that he would impose additional tariffs on eight European nations that have opposed his Greenland push. The additional tariffs are set to take effect on February 1 and will apply to imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.
Trump also shared a screenshot of a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115925848634299232">message</a> from French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday. In the message, Macron tells Trump, &#8220;I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland. Let us try to build great things.&#8221; Macron then suggested holding a meeting in Paris between the Group of 7 countries on Thursday, adding that he could also invite leaders from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia.
Trump was upset with Macron on Tuesday after the French president rejected an offer to sit on Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Board of Peace&#8221; overseeing Gaza. Macron argued that Trump&#8217;s board &#8220;goes beyond the framework of Gaza and raises serious questions, in particular with respect to the principles and structure of the United Nations, which cannot be called into question.”
In response, Trump <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/20/trump-threatens-200percent-tariff-on-french-wines-and-champagnes-.html">said</a> he might impose a 200% tariff on French wines.
“Well, nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon,” Trump said of Macron. “So you know, that’s all right. What I’ll do is, if they feel like [being] hostile, I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join.”

The richest man in the world made the biggest move yet in the Republican Senate primary in Kentucky, donating $10 million to help a friend of Vice President JD Vance win the seat of retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell.
Elon Musk&#8217;s $10 million to a political action committee that backs Nate Morris is the largest single donation the SpaceX and Tesla CEO has ever made to a Senate candidate, Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2026/01/19/elon-musk-10-million-campaign-donation-kentucky">reported</a>. Morris, a 45-year-old businessman whose ancestors live in Appalachia, is friends with Vance, whose family also has roots in Appalachia. Morris is running in what promises to be a tightly contested race between Rep. Andy Barr and former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, two conservatives with strong name recognition in the state.
Musk&#8217;s donation was reported on Monday, around two months after the billionaire met with Vance for a dinner at the vice president&#8217;s residence. The dinner also included White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich, according to Axios.
Morris has supported Republican candidates since 2004 when he donated to President George W. Bush&#8217;s re-election campaign. Paul is now one of the president&#8217;s most vocal critics in Congress.
Morris recently spoke to Musk about his opposition to McConnell and the so-called establishment wing of the Republican Party, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/19/us/politics/elon-musk-nate-morris-kentucky-senate-mitch-mcconnell.html">reported</a>. He was endorsed by the late conservative commentator Charlie Kirk shortly before Kirk was assassinated, and has also been endorsed by Sens. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN).
As of January, the limited polling <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/polls/kentucky-us-senate-election-polls-2026.html">data</a> for the GOP primary showed Morris far behind Cameron and Barr, but with four months until the primary and with major help from Musk, Morris is set up to be competitive in the race. Musk&#8217;s donation to the Morris-aligned super PAC shows that the billionaire is ready to open his checkbook for Republicans in the 2026 midterms, but also suggests that Musk will be strategic about who he backs. Musk clashed with Trump and Republican leaders shortly after becoming a senior adviser to the president last year, taking issue with Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Big, Beautiful Bill&#8221; and what he viewed as irresponsible government spending.

The DOJ investigation focuses on federal statute, 18 U.S.C. § 372, which addresses two or more people who conspire through &#8220;force, intimidation or threats&#8221; to prevent federal law enforcement officers from carrying out their duties, CBS News reported.
Both the governor and the mayor have made inflammatory statements about Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents following the deadly shooting of Renee Good last week. In an address on Wednesday night, Walz urged Minnesotans to follow ICE agents and record their actions to help the state “create a database of the atrocities against Minnesotans” that could be used for “future prosecutions.”
In the hours after Good was shot and killed, Frey told ICE to &#8220;get the f*ck out of Minneapolis.&#8221; Later, Frey said that ICE agents were &#8220;causing chaos&#8221; in Minneapolis and suggested that residents were asking for the city police to &#8220;fight&#8221; ICE agents &#8220;on the streets&#8221; before he urged residents to remain peaceful.
As the Minnesota Democratic leaders have denounced ICE&#8217;s actions, demonstrations in Minneapolis continue, some of which have turned violent. On Wednesday night, a federal agent was ambushed and attacked by three illegal immigrants while attempting to make an arrest, according to the Department of Homeland Security. After the second ICE-involved shooting, demonstrators descended on the scene of the incident and confronted federal officers. Some of the agitators threw fireworks at law enforcement, and the crowd was cleared out of the area with tear gas.

The Kremlin said on Friday that it is closely monitoring President Donald Trump&#8217;s push to acquire Greenland, calling the proposal by the United States &#8220;extraordinary from the standpoint of international law.&#8221;
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/16/greenland-russia-trump-takeover-threats-annex-denmark.html">said</a> that Trump “has said that international law is not a priority for him,&#8221; adding, &#8220;The situation is developing along a different trajectory, and we, along with the rest of the world, will be watching to see which one,&#8221; CNBC reported. Earlier this week, Russia rejected claims that it has its sights set on Greenland, calling such claims a &#8220;fictitious pretext&#8221; used by NATO to grow its military presence in the Arctic, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-says-nato-talk-moscow-beijing-being-threat-greenland-is-myth-create-2026-01-15/">Reuters</a>.
Russia is far from a valid judge on the rules of international law. The country is still engaged in a war that it started by invading Ukraine in February 2022. In recent months, Moscow has fired missiles and drones at civilian targets in Kyiv and surrounding cities, with an <a href="https://ukraine.ohchr.org/en/2025-deadliest-year-for-civilians-in-Ukraine-since-2022-UN-human-rights-monitors-find">estimated</a> 2,514 Ukrainian civilians being killed at the hands of Russia in 2025.
Trump has said multiple times that acquiring Greenland is a priority for U.S. national security, arguing that Russia and China have their own plans for taking over the territory. The president <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-greenland-is-non-negotiable-for-u-s-security?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump%3A+Greenland+Is+Non-Negotiable+For+U.S.+Security">said</a> earlier this week that Greenland is “vital” for his plans to build a “Golden Dome” of defense to protect the United States.
&#8220;NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!” Trump said.
In an interview with The New York Times last week, Trump also suggested he prioritizes his &#8220;own morality&#8221; and his &#8220;own mind&#8221; over international law. The president said that the United States would abide by international law, but then added, “It depends [on] what your definition of international law is.”
Many NATO countries — including Denmark, which oversees Greenland&#8217;s defense — have rebuked Trump over his effort to acquire Greenland while ramping up military presence around the territory. Denmark, France, Sweden, and Norway are conducting joint military exercises in Greenland, a move that has seemingly enraged Moscow. Russia accused NATO of &#8220;using high-profile statements from Washington on the Greenland issue solely to promote an anti-Russian and anti-Chinese agenda.&#8221;
&#8220;We consider the alliance&#8217;s policy of escalating confrontation in the Arctic to be counterproductive and extremely dangerous,&#8221; Russia added.
Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry, who&#8217;s also serving as Trump&#8217;s special envoy to Greenland, said that Russia and China have increased production of icebreaker ships in the past year, suggesting that both countries are seeking &#8220;to gain control of the Arctic.&#8221;
&#8220;China and Russia have built more icebreakers in one year than the United States has built in the history of our country. They aren’t just building them for fun,&#8221; Landry <a href="https://x.com/JeffLandry/status/2012200748243665336">told</a> Fox &amp; Friends Friday morning. &#8220;It is vital that America secures Greenland and reinforces the Monroe Doctrine for the future of national security.&#8221;
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt met with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House earlier this week to discuss Trump&#8217;s push to acquire Greenland. Following the meeting, Rasmussen said that both sides agreed to disagree, with Denmark sticking firm to its “red lines.”
“For us, ideas that would not respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the right of self-determination of the Greenlandic people are, of course, totally unacceptable,&#8221; Rasmussen added.
