U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick agreed to testify on his connection to Jeffrey Epstein as part of the House Oversight Committee&#8217;s investigation into Epstein and his circle of powerful friends.
Lutnick told <a href="https://www.axios.com/2026/03/03/lutnick-epstein-files-testify-house">Axios</a> on Tuesday that he volunteered for the Epstein deposition, maintaining that he did &#8220;nothing wrong&#8221; and wants &#8220;to set the record straight.&#8221; President Donald Trump&#8217;s Commerce secretary once lived next door to Epstein in Manhattan and visited Epstein&#8217;s infamous Caribbean island in 2012, four years after Epstein pled guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution. Lutnick has not been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein&#8217;s sex crimes.
Lutnick is set to testify before the Republican-led Oversight Committee in the coming weeks, with the hearing taking place behind closed doors, similar to the hearings of former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who were grilled by lawmakers over their connection to Epstein last week.
&#8220;Secretary Lutnick has proactively agreed to appear voluntarily before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform,&#8221; committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) <a href="https://x.com/RepJamesComer/status/2028924167601463721">said</a>. &#8220;I commend his demonstrated commitment to transparency and appreciate his willingness to engage with the Committee. I look forward to his testimony.&#8221;
The deposition will likely focus heavily on Lutnick&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-cabinet-secretary-confirms-he-visited-epsteins-island-with-wife-and-children-in-2012">lunch with Epstein</a> on the financier&#8217;s island on Christmas Eve in 2012. Last month, Lutnick testified under oath during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing that he visited Epstein&#8217;s Little Saint James island while on vacation with his family.
&#8220;My wife was with me as were my four children and nannies. I had another couple — they were there as well with their children — and we had lunch on the island. That is true, for an hour, and then we left with all of my children, with my nannies and my wife all together,&#8221; Lutnick said.
A photo showing Lutnick with Epstein on Little Saint James was released as part of the Justice Department&#8217;s Epstein files dump in January, but the image was removed after it was made public. The Justice Department then released the photo again last week. A DOJ spokeswoman <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/photo-of-howard-lutnick-on-epsteins-island-was-removed-from-justice-department-files/">told</a> CBS News that the photo was flagged for nudity and taken down, but later restored after it was reviewed.

Lutnick was criticized for failing to mention the 2012 lunch on Epstein&#8217;s island when he told the New York Post’s Miranda Devine last year that after he and his wife first met Epstein in 2005, he vowed to never be in the same room as him. Lutnick suggested he and his wife were unnerved after Epstein gave them a tour of his home in Manhattan and pointed out a massage table “in the middle” of his home, making remarks about getting the &#8220;right kind of massage.&#8221;
“In the six or eight steps that it takes to get from his house to my house, my wife and I decided that I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again,” Lutnick told Devine last October. “So I was never in the room with him socially, for business, or even philanthropy. If that guy was there, I wasn’t going because he’s gross.”
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) grilled Lutnick over his relationship with Epstein last month, saying, &#8220;Secretary Lutnick, I think you understand the root of concern here. It’s the way you described, very emphatically, your first encounter with him … [and] said you were disgusted and would never have any contact with him again.&#8221;
Lutnick told senators that he doesn’t remember “why we did it,” referring to the lunch with Epstein on his island, but said it was false “to suggest there was anything untoward about that.” The Trump official also said that he did not witness anything inappropriate when he was on the island with Epstein.
When asked about a potential Lutnick deposition, President Trump said last Friday that &#8220;Howard would go in and do whatever he has to say.&#8221;
&#8220;He&#8217;s a very innocent guy — doing a good job,&#8221; Trump added.
The White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-cabinet-secretary-confirms-he-visited-epsteins-island-with-wife-and-children-in-2012">told</a> The Daily Wire last month that President Donald Trump remains confident in Lutnick’s ability to lead the Commerce Department.
“President Trump has assembled the best and most transformative cabinet in modern history. The entire Trump administration, including Secretary Lutnick and the Department of Commerce, remains focused on delivering for the American people,” White House Spokesman Kush Desai said.
Lutnick&#8217;s quick agreement to testify before the House Oversight Committee is a sharp contrast with the Clintons&#8217; months-long fight with the committee as they fought subpoenas sent by Comer and did not show up for their scheduled deposition in January. The Clintons only agreed to testify after the House began contempt proceedings.
House Democrats have also called for President Trump to testify before the Oversight Committee, arguing that Republicans &#8220;set a new precedent&#8221; when they subpoenaed the Clintons.

As the conflict in the Middle East continues, social media platform X announced on Tuesday that it will suspend users from collecting ad revenue if they post &#8220;videos of armed conflict&#8221; generated by artificial intelligence without disclosing that the video is not authentic.
Nikita Bier, the head of product at the Elon Musk-owned social media platform, said X is changing its policies to crack down on users making money through X&#8217;s revenue sharing program by misleading the public during a time of war. Beginning on Tuesday, users who post AI-generated content depicting war without a disclosure will not be able to make money on their posts for 90 days, and a second violation would result in a permanent ban from the program.
&#8220;During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people,&#8221; Bier <a href="https://x.com/nikitabier/status/2028873177028555201">said</a>.
Bier said that X will rely on its public fact-checking system known as Community Notes and a post&#8217;s metadata to flag whether a video is AI-generated. X&#8217;s move does not prohibit users from posting AI-generated videos depicting war. Bier explained that if content creators want to post an AI-generated video, they should add a &#8220;Made with AI&#8221; label that X provides in its options before someone posts.
The social media company&#8217;s move was widely praised by X users who argue that the explosion of AI-generated content in recent months risks misinforming the public when major events, such as the conflict in the Middle East, take place.
Since the conflict began over the weekend, pro-Iran accounts have posted AI-generated content <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0626cqjLOSI">claiming</a> to show the USS Abraham Lincoln getting destroyed by Iranian missiles.
U.S. Central Command <a href="https://x.com/CENTCOM/status/2028124242273767557">responded</a> on Sunday to false claims that the USS Abraham Lincoln was hit by Iranian missiles.
&#8220;Iran’s IRGC claims to have struck USS Abraham Lincoln with ballistic missiles. LIE,&#8221; CENTCOM stated. &#8220;The Lincoln was not hit. The missiles launched didn’t even come close. The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOM’s relentless campaign to defend the American people by eliminating threats from the Iranian regime.&#8221;
Other pro-Iran accounts have also posted dated or manipulated footage that have exaggerated the damage caused by missiles the regime fired at Israel in recent days. At least one AI-generated <a href="https://x.com/ShaykhSulaiman/status/2028822299827151035">video</a> falsely claiming to show rockets raining down on Tel Aviv spread on X on Tuesday. As of publication, the video had not been labeled as AI by Community Notes, despite numerous users pointing out the clear signs that the video was fake, such as the identical designs of the roofs of all the buildings seen in the video.
X&#8217;s revenue sharing program allows users to collect some of the ad revenue generated from their posts if they get enough engagement. As AI tools improve, however, some users are making money off of AI-generated videos that appear to show breaking news events or global conflicts.
The U.S.-Iran conflict is not the first time AI-generated videos have duped social media users. Throughout the Ukraine-Russia war, fake videos have popped up on social media. Most recently, AI-generated videos depicted Ukrainian soldiers surrendering on the front lines.

Former President Bill Clinton offered an unprompted defense of President Donald Trump during his Jeffrey Epstein deposition before the House Oversight Committee last week.
Clinton seemed to say more than what his lawyers would have preferred multiple times throughout the deposition. At one point, he went beyond his initial answer to a Trump-related question from ranking Democrat Robert Garcia of California after Garcia had yielded his time.
When Garcia asked Clinton if he thinks Trump should also face questions from the Oversight Committee about his ties to Epstein, Clinton replied, &#8220;That&#8217;s for you to decide, but he did know him well.&#8221; Clinton then said that he and Trump &#8220;had a brief discussion&#8221; about Epstein.
Garcia ended his line of questioning after Clinton&#8217;s answer, but the former president then offered a longer response on President Trump.
&#8220;I hate this because I don&#8217;t want to inject anything,&#8221; Clinton said as one of his lawyers appeared unsure of what the former president was going to say next. &#8220;But I do not want to leave the impression — but since there was no follow-up question, the president never — this is 20-something years ago — never said anything to me to make me think he was involved with anything with regard to Epstein either.&#8221;
&#8220;He just didn&#8217;t,&#8221; Clinton added. &#8220;He just said, &#8216;We were friends, and then we had a falling out over a land deal or a property deal.'&#8221;

Clinton said he and Trump spoke about Epstein while they were playing a round on Trump&#8217;s golf course in 2002 or 2003. The former president testified he didn&#8217;t recall whether Trump brought up Epstein during their conversation, adding, &#8220;I would be shocked if I did.&#8221;
&#8220;He somehow knew I had flown in Jeffrey Epstein&#8217;s aircraft and he said, &#8216;We had some great times over the years, but we fell out all because of a real estate deal,'&#8221; Clinton added.
Last Friday, during a brief recess in Clinton&#8217;s deposition, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) told reporters that Clinton had discussed President Trump and said Trump &#8220;has never said anything to me to make it seem like he was involved.&#8221; Shortly after Comer spoke to reporters, ranking member Garcia said that the chairman&#8217;s description wasn&#8217;t completely accurate.
&#8220;President Clinton did bring up some additional information about some discussions with President Trump. I think the way Chairman Comer described it, I don&#8217;t think is a complete accurate description of what actually was said,&#8221; Garcia told reporters.
Later in the deposition, Clinton reiterated that he has &#8220;no information that [Trump] did anything wrong.&#8221;
&#8220;I just want it all out there,&#8221; the former president added. &#8220;I want everybody to get it all out there and let everybody see where we are.&#8221;
Trump said on Friday that he didn&#8217;t believe Bill Clinton should have been deposed over his relationship with Epstein.
“I don’t like seeing him deposed,” Trump said, adding, “I like him.”
Democrats have repeatedly said they will push to subpoena Trump over his ties to Epstein after Republicans &#8220;set a new precedent&#8221; by deposing former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Former President Bill Clinton faced multiple questions surrounding a Jeffrey Epstein-related photo that showed him soaking in a hot tub with an unknown woman.
During his four-and-a-half-hour deposition before the House Oversight Committee last week, Clinton was handed the hot tub photo. The woman&#8217;s face was redacted in the Justice Department&#8217;s Epstein files dump.
The former president, who took dozens of trips with Epstein in the early 2000s, said that the photo was taken in Brunei, a small country in Southeast Asia. Clinton testified that he does not remember who the woman in the photo is.
&#8220;I had forgotten that there was anybody in the hot tub,&#8221; Clinton told lawmakers, adding, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know who that is.&#8221;
Asked if he engaged in any sexual activity with the woman in the photo, Clinton responded, &#8220;No.&#8221;

Clinton said the hot tub was in the same area as a large pool where other people were swimming when the photo was taken. Asked if anyone in the pool area was a minor, Clinton said, &#8220;No.&#8221; He also said that he believes a Secret Service agent was &#8220;at the other end of the pool.&#8221; Another photo released by the Justice Department shows Clinton swimming in the pool with Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell and a woman whose face was redacted.
Clinton said the pool area was not public and was on a hotel floor next to multiple suites where the former president and his team were staying on invitation from the sultan of Brunei. Clinton testified that he swam in the pool and enjoyed the hot tub for a brief time late at night before going to bed.
&#8220;I swam around, I sat in the hot tub for five minutes or whatever it was, and I got up and went to bed,&#8221; he said.

Clinton joined Epstein on the financier&#8217;s infamous airplane at least 26 times. Many of the trips were part of Clinton&#8217;s global AIDS initiative, according to the former president.
Clinton testified that he took his final flight on Epstein&#8217;s &#8220;Lolita Express&#8221; in 2003, five years before Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting a child for prostitution. Asked why he stopped traveling with the well-connected financier, Clinton said that after his AIDS initiative &#8220;picked up steam,&#8221; he began receiving offers from other people he &#8220;knew better&#8221; and &#8220;really cared about the work&#8221; who wanted to help with transportation.
&#8220;I thought Mr. Epstein was an interesting man, but I didn&#8217;t think he was really interested in what I was doing,&#8221; he added. Clinton said he had an agreement with Epstein. The late financier would provide the private jet for transportation. On those trips, Clinton said he would chat with Epstein about politics and economics.
&#8220;He never asked me anything untoward,&#8221; Clinton said of Epstein. &#8220;It&#8217;s just I thought I had done what I promised, what I promised to do, and he had done what he promised to do. And I&#8217;ve always, over the years, with donors, tried not to overstay my welcome.&#8221;
Clinton said he first learned of Epstein&#8217;s sex crimes in 2008 when he pleaded guilty.
&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing that I saw when I was around him that made me realize he was trafficking women,&#8221; the former president added.

Former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Clinton threatened to walk away from her Jeffrey Epstein testimony and dared Congress to hold her in contempt if she did, newly released video of her deposition reveals.
The videos of former President Bill Clinton and his wife&#8217;s Jeffrey Epstein depositions were released on Monday, allowing Americans to go behind the closed door hearings that took place last week. Both former President Clinton and Secretary Clinton&#8217;s videos are over four-and-a-half hours long as the Democrats were grilled about their connection to Epstein.
During Hillary Clinton&#8217;s deposition, she threatened to leave the room after a photo of her testifying was shared on social media. As the deposition began, Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado shared a photo of Hillary Clinton with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, who then posted it on X.
One of Hillary Clinton&#8217;s lawyers interrupted the hearing to ask if sharing the photo was consistent with House rules.
&#8220;I&#8217;m done with this if you guys are doing that!&#8221; the former secretary of state fumed. &#8220;You can hold me in contempt from now until the cows come home. This is just typical behavior.&#8221;
The deposition was briefly derailed as Hillary Clinton&#8217;s lawyers called for a break.

Hillary Clinton has never been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein&#8217;s crimes. While she maintains she never met Epstein, Clinton has acknowledged that she spoke with Epstein&#8217;s associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, “on a few occasions.”
Hillary Clinton&#8217;s testimony frustrated Republicans. The former senator and secretary of state often responded to questions by stating that she did &#8220;not recall&#8221; or by deferring to her husband.

Republicans on the Oversight Committee were mostly happy with Bill Clinton&#8217;s answers, with some GOP lawmakers even saying that the former president often spoke more candidly “than his attorneys were comfortable with.&#8221; Bill Clinton was close to Epstein before the financier pled guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution in 2008. In the early 2000s, Bill Clinton traveled with Epstein numerous times and photos released recently by the Justice Department show the former president schmoozing with Epstein and Maxwell, as well as multiple photos that show Bill Clinton in a swimming pool with Maxwell and enjoying a hot tub with a woman whose face was redacted.
During the deposition, Bill Clinton testified that he does not know who the woman in the hot tub was. He said that there were also other people in the pool area when he was in the hot tub, including a Secret Service agent. When asked if he engaged in any sexual activity with the woman in the photo, Bill Clinton said, &#8220;No.&#8221;
The former president has not been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein&#8217;s sex crimes.

A Waymo driverless taxi blocked an entire street as an ambulance attempted to respond to the deadly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-probes-potential-nexus-to-terrorism-in-deadly-austin-shooting-spree">mass shooting</a> at a bar in Austin, Texas, early Sunday morning.
A video of the incident went viral on social media over the weekend, and Austin officials confirmed that the Waymo robotaxi was blocking the road as first responders tried to drive to Buford’s, a popular bar near the University of Texas at Austin. The bar was the scene of a mass shooting where a Senegalese immigrant, who wore a shirt depicting the Iranian flag, killed at least two people and wounded over a dozen more.
The video shows the Waymo vehicle sitting perpendicular to the road and blocking an ambulance as EMS attempted to drive to the scene of the shooting. The robotaxi appeared to be waiting for its passengers as it blocked most of the street.
One woman was heard on the video saying, &#8220;This is why we should not have self-driving cars!&#8221;
&#8220;We just need to get in it, I think,&#8221; a man said.
The driverless car blocked the road for nearly two minutes before a police officer got into the Waymo and manually drove it off the street. By that time, the ambulance appeared to back up and take an alternate route to the scene of the shooting.

A Waymo spokeswoman told The Daily Wire that the driverless vehicle &#8220;identified a road blockage&#8221; as it was picking up passengers and then &#8220;began executing a U-turn.&#8221; When another ambulance appeared on the street, the Waymo &#8220;briefly yielded and was assisted by a nearby officer,&#8221; according to the spokeswoman.
Matthew Turnage said that after he left, he ordered an Uber ride, and the rideshare service sent him the Waymo car.
&#8220;We left a club at 2 a.m. and were walking to get a ride home. We just so happened to get a Waymo car from Uber and when we found the car, it was trying to pick us up but got stuck in the middle of the street and blocked emergency vehicles for a couple of minutes,&#8221; Turnage <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/austin-mass-shooting/video-waymo-seen-blocking-first-responders-during-west-sixth-shooting/">told</a> KXAN Austin.
Robert Luckritz, chief of the Austin-Travis County EMS, said on Monday that the Waymo incident likely didn&#8217;t affect the &#8220;overall&#8221; response. Luckritz added that around 20 emergency vehicles made it to the scene of the shooting, with the first emergency vehicles arriving within 57 seconds of the first 911 call.
&#8220;So in the grand scheme of the impact of the overall incident, we don&#8217;t believe it had any impact on patient outcomes,&#8221; he said.
Luckritz said that officials communicated their &#8220;concerns&#8221; with Waymo &#8220;and [are working] with them to try to address this issue moving forward.&#8221;
Austin was one of the first cities to allow driverless car companies, such as Waymo and Tesla, to put robotaxis on its streets. While Waymo argues that its robotaxis have fewer accidents than human drivers, the driverless vehicles have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waymo-woes-self-driving-robotaxis-racking-up-crashes-and-mystery-riders-in-the-trunk">caused</a> traffic jams, driven through police standoffs, and <a href="https://x.com/niccruzpatane/status/1929590206488883246">blocked</a> emergency vehicles in the past.
Police said at a press conference that the death toll from the shooting could soon rise to three as one victim could be taken off of life support later on Monday. Federal authorities are investigating the incident as a potential terrorist attack. Along with the Iran-themed shirt, the gunman, identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, also wore a sweatshirt emblazoned with the phrase &#8220;Property of Allah.&#8221;

President Donald Trump told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Monday that the U.S. military&#8217;s &#8220;Operation Epic Fury&#8221; is &#8220;a little ahead of schedule,&#8221; and hinted at a &#8220;big wave&#8221; of military action that is &#8220;coming soon.&#8221;
Tapper&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/02/politics/trump-interview-iran-jake-tapper">report</a> on his phone call with Trump came shortly after General Dan &#8220;Raizin&#8221; Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the United States had established air superiority over Iran. In a nine-minute phone call with Tapper, Trump added that America is &#8220;knocking the crap out of Iran&#8221; and that “We haven’t even started hitting them hard.&#8221;
&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to see it go on too long,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I always thought it would be four weeks. And we’re a little ahead of schedule.&#8221;
General Caine said earlier on Monday that more U.S. forces are currently being deployed to the Middle East to &#8220;provide the president with credible options should action be required.&#8221; Forces already in the region were also being strategically repositioned, Caine added.
Trump also <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/02/us-news/trump-wont-rule-out-sending-us-troops-into-iran-if-necessary-tells-the-post-i-dont-care-about-polling/">spoke</a> to the New York Post on Monday morning and did not rule out putting U.S. boots on the ground in Iran.
&#8220;I don’t have the yips with respect to boots on the ground,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Like every president says, ‘There will be no boots on the ground.’ I don’t say it,” Trump said. “I say ‘probably don’t need them,’ [or] ‘if they were necessary.&#8217;”
At least four American troops have been killed in the operation so far. The U.S. soldiers were killed when an Iranian missile evaded defense systems and slammed into an area in Kuwait, where the troops were stationed. Three U.S. F-15Es were also shot down in Kuwait in a friendly fire incident, but the six crew members aboard the three fighter jets ejected safely.
The joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran has killed 49 Iranian military and political leaders, including the country&#8217;s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. An airstrike took out the Iranian leaders as they met at Khamenei&#8217;s compound, with Trump saying U.S. officials were &#8220;shocked&#8221; to take out so many leaders in one bombing.
“They don’t even know who’s leading them now,” Trump added.
&#8220;We’re right on schedule, way ahead of schedule in terms of leadership — 49 killed — and that was, you know, going to take, we figured, at least four weeks, and we did it in one day,&#8221; Trump told the Post.
Tapper also asked Trump about who could emerge as the next leader of Iran, but the president said his administration doesn&#8217;t know who could take over next. War Secretary Pete Hegseth told reporters on Monday morning that the Trump administration is focused on taking out Iran&#8217;s military and nuclear capabilities, not on regime change.

During the press conference, General Caine said the United States has established air superiority over Iran, which he said would &#8220;enhance the protection of our forces&#8221; as well as &#8220;continue the work over Iran.&#8221;
After the United States, along with Israel, decimated Iran&#8217;s military and took out numerous military and political leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran responded by launching missiles toward U.S. bases in neighboring Arab countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. At least four American troops were killed in an Iranian rocket attack on Kuwait.
Iran&#8217;s Arab neighbors have also condemned the regime for launching missiles at airports and residential areas.
Hegseth said on Monday morning that the Trump administration has a clear goal of destroying Iran&#8217;s military and nuclear infrastructure and is not concerned with regime change.

Trump offered members of Iran&#8217;s Islamic Revolutionary Guard, armed forces, and police &#8220;complete immunity&#8221; if they were to lay down their weapons.

During his address, Trump warned that Iran would respond to the joint U.S. and Israeli strikes by targeting American troops in the region. The United States has multiple military bases in Arab countries surrounding Iran, and Trump has been building up a massive armada of U.S. ships and fighter jets around Iran in recent weeks.
&#8220;My administration has taken every possible step to minimize the risk to U.S. personnel in the region. Even so, and I do not make this statement lightly, the Iranian regime seeks to kill,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost, and we may have casualties. Iran already responded to the U.S. strikes by targeting a U.S. military base in Bahrain. A video obtained by Fox News shows a missile striking a U.S. naval base in Bahrain, obliterating an empty warehouse, according to a U.S. official. No Americans were wounded in the retaliatory attack, a U.S. official said.

President Donald Trump said Senator Ted Cruz could be Supreme Court nominee in the near future, praising the Texas Republican during a speech in Corpus Christi on Friday evening.
Trump, who was once a fierce critic of Cruz, called the senator &#8220;an amazing guy&#8221; who is &#8220;so good and so talented.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m thinking about putting him in the Supreme Court,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I&#8217;m thinking because it&#8217;s very hard, getting these nominations through is tough.&#8221;
The president added that Cruz would receive &#8220;100%&#8221; of the Democratic and Republican vote, arguing that Cruz&#8217;s foes would &#8220;want to get him out of [the Senate]. He is such a pain in the ass.&#8221;
Trump also floated the idea of a Cruz Supreme Court appointment during a speech last month, calling the senator a &#8220;brilliant legal mind.&#8221; Cruz, however, shot the proposal down in January.

Cruz added that he wants to be &#8220;right in the middle&#8221; of political battles, something the Republican said a &#8220;principled federal judge&#8221; would stay out of.
After completing law school, Cruz clerked for Chief Justice William Rehnquist at the Supreme Court from 1996 to 1997. Trump first discussed the idea of nominating Cruz to the Supreme Court with the senator privately after the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, according to Cruz.
&#8220;I wrestled with it because I knew Justice Scalia and revered him,&#8221; Cruz added. &#8220;And to have the opportunity to succeed him, I mean, talk about taking your breath away.&#8221;
While none of the Supreme Court justices have announced plans to retire anytime soon, there has been talk of either Samuel Alito or Clarence Thomas, the two oldest and most conservative justices, retiring within the next couple of years to give Trump a chance to replace either of them with another conservative. Thomas is 77-years-old and Alito is 75.
Alito is set to release a book in early October, which has sparked rumors that the conservative justice could be hanging up his robe before the beginning of the Supreme Court&#8217;s next term, which also begins in October. Alito has served on the court for 20 years, while Thomas is the longest-tenured justice, nearing his 35th year on the high court.
When asked about Thomas or Alito potentially retiring in the near future, Trump <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/09/donald-trump-full-interview-transcript-00681693?nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&amp;nname=playbook&amp;nrid=fe8db97b-d67e-4e92-8f3a-1577ce038e35">told</a> POLITICO in December that he wants both of them to stay on the court.
&#8220;Both of those men are fantastic,&#8221; he said.
After Republicans successfully prevented former President Barack Obama from tapping Merrick Garland as Scalia&#8217;s replacement — thanks to the efforts of then-Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch in 2017. Trump went on to nominate two more justices, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, during his first term. The Jeffrey Epstein-related deposition of former President Bill Clinton before the House Oversight Committee concluded around six hours after it began on Friday, with Clinton often getting &#8220;candid&#8221; with lawmakers.
The Republican lawmakers who attended the hearing said that Clinton was very cooperative as the former president attempted to answer each question from lawmakers and often spoke more candidly &#8220;than his attorneys were comfortable with.&#8221; House Committee Chairman James Comer, who oversaw the hearing, said the deposition was &#8220;historical.&#8221;
&#8220;I believe that in the history of Congress, the two highest ranking to ever be deposed by Congress would be President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton,&#8221; Comer added. &#8220;This is a serious investigation, and we will continue to try to get the truth to the American people and justice for the victims.&#8221;
Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina thanked Clinton for cooperating during the hearing.
&#8220;He did attempt to respond to every single question asked, even when his attorneys told him to shut up, he kept going,&#8221; Mace said.
Neither Clinton nor the Democratic committee members addressed the media outside after the hearing like the Republicans did.
The Oversight Committee said it will release video of both Bill and Hillary Clinton&#8217;s depositions within 24 hours, adding that transcripts of the hearings will be released once the Clintons&#8217; lawyers approve them. Comer promised to subpoena more people who were connected to Epstein to testify before the committee, but he didn&#8217;t reveal who the committee&#8217;s next target would be.
Earlier on Friday, Comer said that Clinton discussed President Donald Trump during his deposition on Jeffrey Epstein on Friday. Comer said that when Democrats asked former President Clinton what he knew about Trump&#8217;s relationship with Epstein, Clinton said that Trump never told him anything that would make it seem like Trump &#8220;was involved&#8221; with Epstein.
&#8220;I know there&#8217;s a lot of obsession about President Trump from the media &#8230; I want to make a statement because [the Democrats] probably won&#8217;t mention this when they come out here,&#8221; Comer said. &#8220;Ranking member [Robert] Garcia asked, &#8216;Should President Trump be called to answer questions from this committee?&#8217; And President Clinton said, &#8216;That&#8217;s for you to decide.&#8217; And [Clinton] went on to say, &#8216;President Trump has never said anything to me to make it seem like he was involved.'&#8221;
Earlier on Friday, President Donald Trump, who was also close to Epstein in the late 1990s and early 2000s, told reporters that he doesn&#8217;t believe Bill Clinton should have been deposed over his relationship with Epstein.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t like seeing him deposed,&#8221; Trump said, adding, &#8220;I like him.&#8221;
Despite Comer suggesting that Bill Clinton&#8217;s deposition would go &#8220;even longer&#8221; than his wife Hillary Clinton&#8217;s testimony, which lasted over six hours on Thursday, the hearing was finished around the same time as the former first lady&#8217;s. Republicans said that Hillary Clinton answered most of their questions, but they were disappointed that the former secretary of state and first lady told them around a dozen times, &#8220;You&#8217;ll have to ask my husband,&#8221; Comer said.
&#8220;So, we have a lot of questions for her husband tomorrow,&#8221; the House Oversight chairman <a href="https://x.com/GOPoversight/status/2027207016964300899">told</a> reporters on Thursday evening. &#8220;And I&#8217;m confident that deposition will last even longer than this one.&#8221;
Former President Clinton posted his opening statement on social media shortly after his closed-door testimony kicked off. In his statement, which was much shorter than that of his wife&#8217;s, the former president claimed that he &#8220;saw nothing&#8221; and &#8220;did nothing wrong.&#8221; He also said that members of Congress will likely hear him say &#8220;I don&#8217;t recall&#8221; numerous times during the deposition.
&#8220;That might be unsatisfying. But I&#8217;m not going to say something I&#8217;m not sure of,&#8221; Clinton added. &#8220;This was a long time ago, and I am bound by my oath not to speculate, or to guess.&#8221;

The &#8220;I don’t recall&#8221; line became closely associated with Bill Clinton during prior legal proceedings — most notably his 1998 grand jury testimony during the Monica Lewinsky investigation, where variations of memory-related responses were widely discussed and scrutinized.
Just before 12:30 p.m. ET, Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida gave an update to reporters and said Bill Clinton was &#8220;cooperative and answering questions.&#8221;

Before heading inside to begin Bill Clinton&#8217;s deposition on Friday, Comer called it &#8220;a historical day for the United States Congress.&#8221;
&#8220;We already had a big portfolio of questions for him, but that increased yesterday,&#8221; Comer added.
Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace said on Friday morning that Hillary Clinton did not want to answer questions about the photos that show her husband hanging out with Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, along with  unknown women. Mace also accused Hillary Clinton of responding to some of her “pointed” questions by “screaming.”
“She was unhinged,” Mace added. “And I hope that President Clinton is less unhinged today than his wife was yesterday.”
Mace also called for the Oversight Committee to subpoena Trump&#8217;s Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, a move that California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna said would have the support of Democrats. Lutnick met with Epstein multiple times, including at least one time on Epstein&#8217;s infamous island. The Commerce secretary said that he did not engage in or witness any illegal activity, and Lutnick has not been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein&#8217;s crimes.
Asked about a potential Lutnick subpoena, Trump said the Commerce secretary is &#8220;innocent&#8221; and would &#8220;go in and say whatever he has to say.&#8221;
On Thursday evening, Hillary Clinton spoke to reporters outside the performing arts center where her deposition took place in Chappaqua, New York, and blasted Republicans for asking &#8220;very repetitive&#8221; questions after she stated that she never met Epstein. Hillary Clinton also suggested that her husband will focus on the &#8220;chronology&#8221; of his relationship with Epstein and argue that he only spent time with the financier before Epstein was charged and pleaded guilty to soliciting a child for prostitution.
&#8220;I think it is fair to say that the vast majority of people who had contact with [Epstein] before his criminal pleas in &#8217;08 were like most people, they did not know what he was doing,&#8221; Hillary Clinton said. &#8220;And I think that is exactly what my husband will testify to tomorrow.&#8221;
The former president will likely have much more to address during his deposition than his wife, as Bill Clinton traveled numerous times on Epstein&#8217;s private plane. He also appears in multiple instances in the Epstein files recently released by the Justice Department, including in photos that show the former president schmoozing with Epstein and Maxwell, as well as multiple photos that show Bill Clinton in a swimming pool with Maxwell and enjoying a hot tub with a woman whose face was redacted.
The former president was also seen in a picture getting a back massage from Chauntae Davies, one of Epstein’s accusers. Davies has not accused Clinton of acting inappropriately.

Comer said on Friday before the deposition that House Republicans plan to ask Bill Clinton about the photos as well as his trips on Epstein’s private jet.
House Democrats also made a few comments before heading into the building for former President Clinton’s deposition. Rep. Robert Garcia of California said that Democrats want “serious answers” from Bill Clinton. Garcia then blasted his Republican colleagues, who Hillary Clinton accused of asking irrelevant questions, including inquiries about UFOs, during Thursday’s deposition.
“What we don’t want is a side show and questions about UFOs, or about conspiracy theories from decades ago, which is what unfortunately happened yesterday,” Garcia said. “A series of bizarre questions were asked of Secretary Clinton.”
The Democrats also repeated their demand from Thursday and urged Republicans to subpoena President Donald Trump. Garcia said that Republicans have “set a new precedent” by asking a former president to testify over his relationship with Epstein.
Neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton has been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein&#8217;s sex crimes, and the former president and first lady have stated that they never visited Epstein&#8217;s private island. After photos of Bill Clinton were released among the millions of Epstein-related documents and files by the Justice Department, the former president&#8217;s chief of staff, Angel Ureña, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bill-clinton-responds-to-shocking-photos-in-epstein-file-dump">accused</a> the Trump administration of scapegoating Bill Clinton.
“The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Ureña said. “This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy, 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be.”
Documents released by the Justice Department also show that Maxwell had a major role in the founding of the Clinton Global Initiative, a project of the Clinton Foundation to bring world leaders together to discuss future action. While coordinating with Epstein, Maxwell took part in budget discussions when the former president was first attempting to launch the initiative in 2004, just two years before Epstein was indicted, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/08/us/politics/epstein-clintons-maxwell.html">reported</a>.
Maxwell, a British former socialite, told the Justice Department during an interview last year that Bill Clinton was her friend, &#8220;not Epstein&#8217;s friend.&#8221;

The Manhattan District Attorney&#8217;s Office, led by leftist Alvin Bragg, said it would not pursue an assault charge for a 27-year-old man who is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nypd-nabs-27-year-old-after-mamdani-dismissed-mob-targeting-police-as-kids-at-a-snowball-fight?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=NYPD+Nabs+27-Year-Old+After+Mamdani+Dismissed+Mob+Targeting+Police+As+%E2%80%98Kids+At+A+Snowball+Fight%E2%80%99">accused</a> of hurling chunks of snow and ice at New York&#8217;s Finest earlier this week.
Gusmane Coulibaly, who NYPD officers arrested on Thursday, was initially charged with assaulting a police officer after a mob of people surrounded officers at Washington Square Park on Monday and launched snowballs at them. His other charges of obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct were also downgraded. The only charges prosecutors are willing to pursue are harassment and a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of governmental administration, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/26/us-news/manhattan-da-ditches-cop-assault-charge-in-case-against-washington-square-park-snowball-fight-miscreant/">reported</a>.
The New York City Police Benevolent Association, a union representing over 50,000 active and retired NYPD officers, blasted the district attorney&#8217;s office over its decision to drop the assault charge for Coulibaly. Patrick Hendry, the president of the union, accused Coulibaly and three other suspects who are still wanted of placing rocks in the snowballs before launching them at police officers.
“So why wasn’t assault charged? Why was harassment charged? Why do they feel that that didn’t cause an injury to a police officer, which he clearly, clearly has an injury below his eye?” Hendry asked.
Two NYPD officers were treated at the hospital for lacerations to their faces after they were hit with the snowballs.
Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Victoria Notaro told the court that prosecutors would have a difficult time proving that Coulibaly was responsible for the minor injuries to the officers, according to the Post.
Thursday&#8217;s arrest over the snowball ambush was Coulibaly&#8217;s second run-in with law enforcement this month. The NYPD said that the 27-year-old man was arrested &#8220;less than three weeks ago for attempted robbery in the transit system.&#8221;

The decision from the district attorney&#8217;s office to drop the assault charge comes after New York City democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/it-was-a-snowball-fight-mamdani-downplays-unruly-mob-that-injured-nypd-officers">downplayed</a> the mob&#8217;s actions, saying earlier this week, “I can just tell you from the video I saw it looked like kids at a snowball fight.”
Mamdani&#8217;s office told The Daily Wire on Thursday that the mayor does not believe any action during Monday&#8217;s snowball ambush of police officers &#8220;rises to the level of criminal charges.&#8221;
&#8220;As the mayor has said, police officers deserve to be treated with respect. The videos he saw showed a snowball fight that got out of hand,&#8221; Mamdani spokeswoman Dora Pekec said.
The mayor&#8217;s stance on the incident is at odds with other New York officials, including the city&#8217;s Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. Tisch called the mob&#8217;s actions &#8220;criminal,&#8221; while Hochul said it is “never acceptable to throw anything at a police officer.”
