President Donald Trump promised on Friday to deliver &#8220;rapid&#8221; solutions and reconstruction for residents in areas of North Carolina that were decimated by Hurricane Helene last fall.
Trump spoke at a press conference after meeting with people in Swannanoa, North Carolina, on Friday, promising to immediately sign an executive order &#8220;slashing all red tape and bureaucratic barriers and permits to ensure the rapid reconstruction of the roads here in western North Carolina.&#8221;
&#8220;We&#8217;re going to go through a permitting process that&#8217;s called no permitting. Just get it done,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;That&#8217;s the way they built them many years ago. I guarantee you that.&#8221;

Earlier this month, dozens of Hurricane Helene victims were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dozens-of-north-carolina-hurricane-victims-lose-fema-sponsored-housing-senators-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">forced to leave</a> the hotels they were staying in when their FEMA-sponsored vouchers expired, according to North Carolina Republican Sens. Ted Budd and Thom Tillis. FEMA told the senators that they were working on a solution for the North Carolina residents who lost their homes. During Trump&#8217;s press conference, he also gave the microphone to victims to share stories of how the hurricane affected them.

Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to declassify the JFK and RFK files, along with the files on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. After signing the order, the president told his aide to give the pen he used to RFK Jr., his nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary.
&#8220;A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades. And everything will be revealed,&#8221; Trump said.
In a post on Friday, Kennedy thanked Trump &#8220;for trusting American citizens and for taking the first step down the road towards reversing this disastrous trajectory&#8221; of government secrecy. According to Trump&#8217;s order, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the Attorney General will have 15 days to come up with a plan for the release of the JFK files and 45 days to plan for the release of the RFK and MLK files. The Senate still has to confirm Tulsi Gabbard to serve as DNI and Pam Bondi to serve as AG.

Democrats have criticized Patel&#8217;s nomination, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0qysxWQ8EE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arguing</a> that he lacks the &#8220;experience, temperament, or judgment&#8221; necessary to run the FBI. Democrats have complained about Kennedy&#8217;s vaccine stances, while some Republicans have urged the Senate to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-mike-pence-org-urges-senators-to-oppose-rfk-jr-confirmation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vote against</a> RFK Jr. over his stance on abortion. The college football national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame on Monday was the third-lowest-rated national championship game since the beginning of the College Football Playoff (CFP) era, which goes back to 2014.
An average of 22.1 million viewers tuned in to <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/43525435/cfp-title-game-most-watched-season-viewership-down" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ESPN</a> to watch the Buckeyes win over the Fighting Irish, a 12% drop from last year&#8217;s national championship game between Michigan and Washington that was watched by an average of 25 million people. Only the 2021 national championship game — which came at the end of a season that saw many canceled games due to the COVID pandemic — and the 2023 championship game between Georgia and TCU — which ended in a historic blowout — had <a href="https://saturdayblitz.com/declining-tv-ratings-for-college-football-playoff-national-title-should-be-reason-for-concern" target="_blank" rel="noopener">worse ratings</a> than this year&#8217;s championship game.
The lower ratings for college football&#8217;s biggest game came on the back of the first 12-team CFP, a massive expansion from the sport&#8217;s previous four-team playoff. The drop in ratings this year is surprising since the championship game featured two historically successful teams with large markets. According to <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/12/19/college-sports-programs-valuations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNBC</a>, Ohio State is the most valuable college sports program in the country with Notre Dame close behind at #6. The schools&#8217; large fan bases combined with the expanded playoff format, however, didn&#8217;t resonate with viewers as championship games have in the past.
Another factor that could&#8217;ve affected viewership on Monday night was the inauguration and immediate actions of President Donald Trump, which drew many people to Fox News and other news networks throughout the day.
Ohio State jumped out to a big lead in the third quarter when they went up 31-7, but Notre Dame crawled their way back into the game late in the fourth quarter. The TV audience for the game peaked during the second quarter at 26.1 million viewers when the game was a 7-7 tie, according to ESPN.

During her time in office, Benson has been repeatedly rebuffed by courts for attempting to create new rules for poll watchers without going through the proper process. Benson was also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rnc-sues-mi-dem-secretary-of-state-over-guidance-for-absentee-ballots" target="_blank" rel="noopener">challenged</a> by the Republican National Committee in the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election for allegedly issuing guidance contradictory to Michigan law regarding absentee ballots.
Benson is the first Democrat to officially announce her bid for governor. Two students were shot in the cafeteria of Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday, before the gunman turned the gun on himself, according to police.
Fox 17 Nashville <a href="https://fox17.com/news/local/2025-jan-22-metro-police-3-shot-at-antioch-high-school-nashville-tennessee-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the gunman entered the cafeteria and shot two students before shooting himself. The Metro Nashville Police Department identified the shooter as a 17-year-old male who shot two students with a pistol. One female victim was killed and a male student was transported to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is in stable condition after suffering a &#8220;graze wound.&#8221; The gunman then shot and killed himself. Police initially said that two female students were shot, but <a href="https://x.com/MaddieNolanTV/status/1882155451896193418" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> now state that one female student was killed and one male student was wounded by the gunman.

The U.S. Coast Guard is &#8220;immediately&#8221; deploying more assets to the nation&#8217;s maritime borders to prevent migrants from illegally entering the U.S.

Corbett was released just hours after President Donald Trump was sworn into office and after the Biden administration ramped up its negotiations with the Taliban in the past month. According to the Taliban, Corbett and one other hostage who wasn&#8217;t named were exchanged for terrorist Khan Muhammad, who was serving a life sentence in California, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/american-held-afghanistan-released-final-hours-biden-administration-rcna188496" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;Today, our hearts are filled with overwhelming gratitude and praise to God for sustaining Ryan’s life and bringing him back home after what has been the most challenging and uncertain 894 days of our lives,&#8221; the Corbett family said in a statement shared with The Daily Wire.
The family thanked Trump, former President Joe Biden, incoming National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, incoming Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler, former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and former Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens for &#8220;their tireless work and steadfast dedication to bringing Ryan back to us.&#8221;
Muhammed, the terrorist exchanged for Corbett&#8217;s release, was convicted and sentenced on drug and narco-terrorism charges. The <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archive/opa/pr/2008/December/08-crm-1145.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Justice</a> said that Muhammed &#8220;sought to kill U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan using rockets&#8221; and attempted to send heroin to the U.S.
Corbett and his family first moved to Afghanistan in 2010 and started Bloom Afghanistan, an enterprise focused on improving the war-torn country’s private sector. The Corbett family safely evacuated from Afghanistan when the United States withdrew under Biden’s orders in August 2021, and then Ryan returned around five months later. He was captured by the Taliban a year after the Biden administration&#8217;s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Corbett&#8217;s wife, Anna, worked tirelessly to secure her husband&#8217;s release. Marco Rubio was sworn in as the 72nd U.S. Secretary of State Tuesday morning after a 99-0 vote from the Senate to confirm him on Inauguration Day.
In an interview on CBS Mornings shortly after being sworn in, Rubio emphasized the importance of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s going to be the official policy of the United States that the war in Ukraine needs to come to an end.&#8221; President Donald Trump vowed on the campaign trail to end the nearly three-year-long stalemate within the first 24 hours of being in office.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a war and a conflict that was started by Russia, but it is now a stalemate, a protracted and bloody conflict,&#8221; Rubio said. &#8220;It&#8217;s been incredibly destructive, I would argue for both Russia and Ukraine, but Ukraine is paying the biggest price of all to its energy infrastructure. To the people whose lives that are lost, to the millions of Ukrainians that have had to leave their countries and are living overseas, the conflict needs to end.&#8221;
&#8220;And it&#8217;s a policy of the United States that we want it to end, we want to do everything we can to help it end,&#8221; Rubio added.
