An experimental cancer vaccine has kept high-risk melanoma from returning for longer and reduced the risk of it spreading in a late-stage trial.
Moderna and Merck said Wednesday in a <a href="https://www.merck.com/news/merck-and-moderna-announce-phase-3-interpath-001-trial-of-intismeran-autogene-plus-keytruda-met-endpoints-of-recurrence-free-survival-rfs-and-distant-metastasis-free-survival-dmfs-in-patient/">press release</a> that their experimental personalized mRNA vaccine, Intismeran, combined with Merck’s Keytruda, met both its primary and secondary goals in a late-stage trial of high-risk melanoma patients who had already undergone surgery. The coupling prolonged the time before the cancer returned and reduced the chance it would spread to other organs.
The late-stage trial was conducted on more than 1,000 people, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/health/pharma/moderna-merck-vaccine-succeeds-in-preventing-melanoma-from-returning-540e9e18">according</a> to The Wall Street Journal. Every participant had already undergone surgery to remove a melanoma. Roughly half received the personalized vaccine along with Keytruda. The rest received Keytruda by itself. Treatment lasted about a year. The aim was to lower the odds that the cancer would return after the tumor was gone.
“I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of a new field,” Jane Healy, a vice president of oncology at Merck, told The Wall Street Journal. The goal for patients, she said, is “to give them longer without having to worry about treatments for cancer.”
The companies withheld their exact figures on the duration patients stayed free of progressing disease and how long they lived overall. Those numbers are scheduled to be presented at a medical meeting later this year. How strong and how well tolerated the benefit proves to be will shape both regulatory chances and eventual use.
No personalized mRNA cancer vaccine had previously succeeded in a late-stage trial. The outcome follows prolonged efforts to design treatments that target the unique mutations present in each patient’s tumor.
The outcome gives Moderna a potential entry into the cancer-drug market, which exceeds $240 billion, at a time when its COVID-19 vaccine revenue has been falling. Merck, meanwhile, could gain another product to help offset the coming loss of exclusivity on Keytruda.
Moderna’s stock jumped  &#8220;more than doubled&#8221; Wednesday morning, and Merck shares rose more than 10%, per the Journal.
“We are now an oncology company,” Moderna Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel said. “By Christmas, you could have a company that’s going back into sales growth for the first time in four years.”
Each dose is made personalized to the patient. Once the melanoma is surgically removed, a blood sample and tumor biopsy are sent for analysis. Researchers pin down mutations specific to that patient’s cancer cells that are most likely to be noticed by the immune system. Those genetic targets are then written into mRNA and turned into a vaccine. Manufacturing takes about six weeks from the time of the biopsy. In the meantime, patients begin Keytruda to keep the disease in check, WSJ reported.
The two companies started working together on these types of vaccines in 2016. They chose melanoma first because the tumors typically contain many mutations. Additional trials are already running in bladder cancer, a frequent type of lung cancer, and kidney cancer.

Tommy John, the four-time All-Star pitcher whose 26-year Major League Baseball career was extended by the groundbreaking elbow surgery that bears his name, has died at 83.
John died Saturday at his home in Florida. His wife, Cheryl John, said the cause was bladder cancer.
John won 288 games during a career that stretched from 1963 to 1989 — the second-most by any pitcher of the modern era who has not been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He pitched for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels, and Oakland Athletics.
But John’s greatest contribution to baseball came after his career appeared to be over. On July 17, 1974, while pitching for the Dodgers, John tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. At the time, such an injury was generally considered career-ending for a pitcher.
Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe offered John an experimental alternative: reconstructing the damaged ligament using a tendon taken from his right forearm. Jobe reportedly gave John roughly a 1% chance of returning to the mound.
John underwent the procedure in September 1974, missed the 1975 season, and returned in 1976. He went on to pitch another 14 seasons, winning 164 games after the surgery.
His best years came after the operation. John won 20 games three times, including consecutive 20-win seasons with the Yankees in 1979 and 1980. He finished his career with a 288-231 record, a 3.34 ERA, and 2,245 strikeouts.
The procedure became known as Tommy John surgery and has since transformed baseball. More than 1,000 professional pitchers have undergone the operation, according to the <a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/public-health/prevention-wellness/what-doctors-want-patients-know-about-tommy-john-surgery">American Medical Association</a>, while roughly one-third of active Major League pitchers had undergone the procedure as of 2023.
Among the many stars to return from Tommy John surgery are Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, Hunter Greene, Justin Verlander, Chris Sale, Jacob deGrom, and Gerrit Cole. Hall of Famers John Smoltz, Paul Molitor, and Billy Wagner also underwent the procedure.
John and Jobe were honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 for their contributions to baseball.
Despite his accomplishments, John never received enough support for induction into the Hall of Fame. He spent 15 years on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot and never received more than 31.7% of the vote.
John later became a broadcaster, coach, minor league manager, and motivational speaker. He also became critical of the increasing use of Tommy John surgery among young pitchers, arguing that the procedure should not be treated as an easy solution to preventable arm injuries. 
John is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and three children. His son Taylor died in 2010.
John’s playing career made him a baseball legend. The surgery that bears his name made his impact far greater: generations of players were given a chance to keep playing because John was willing to be the first to take an extraordinary gamble.

Former President Joe Biden&#8217;s prostate cancer has progressed beyond the bone metastases disclosed at his 2025 diagnosis and is causing him significant pain, his son Hunter Biden said in an interview Friday.
“The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further,” Hunter Biden said during an interview with <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy8ey458pv5o">BBC Newsnight</a>. “It’s very painful and it’s very debilitating in many respects.”
Hunter Biden became emotional while discussing his father’s condition, describing it as “really sad to watch” and saying he wished the former president would complain more about what he is experiencing.
Joe Biden, 83, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joe-biden-diagnosed-with-aggressive-form-of-prostate-cancer">diagnosed</a> with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May 2025, several months after leaving the White House, following a medical examination prompted by urinary symptoms. His office said at the time that the cancer had a Gleason score of 9 and had already metastasized to his bones, while describing it as hormone-sensitive and therefore potentially responsive to treatment.
Hunter Biden said his father remains active despite the progression of his illness. “He’s still out there. He’s still doing his thing,” Hunter Biden said. “He so believes in this country.”
“My dad is, to this day, the center of our family,” he added. “He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”

Johnson &amp; Johnson announced on Monday it will be paying $5.5 billion to settle 76,000 lawsuit claims that its talc baby powder caused ovarian cancer.
Lawsuits about J&amp;J’s talc-based baby powder have entrenched the company in legal battles for the past 15 years. J&amp;J has settled similar lawsuits alleging that the baby powder contained asbestos and thus caused mesothelioma, but had not previously settled the ovarian cancer claims.  
This agreement came after a federal court <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/us-judge-casts-doubt-69000-cases-alleging-jj-talc-caused-cancer-2026-07-22/">decision</a> on July 22 decreed that most claimants could not effectively tie the Johnson &amp; Johnson baby powder to their ovarian cancer.
“[The court confirmed] what we have maintained for years: that these claims lack scientific merit and were sustained only by unreliable expert opinions that could not survive rigorous judicial review,” Erik Haas, Johnson &amp; Johnson’s Worldwide Vice President of Litigation, <a href="https://www.jnj.com/media-center/press-releases/johnson-johnson-announces-a-proposed-resolution-of-ovarian-talc-litigation">said</a> in a statement. “While we are confident the Company would have ultimately prevailed with further litigation… this resolution allows the Company to put this matter behind it and remain focused on its mission to develop medicines and devices that save lives.”
Johnson &amp; Johnson repeated in its statement that the lawsuits were “meritless” and said that “Studies show talc is safe, does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer.” 
Chris Seeger, an attorney representing about 2,500 plaintiffs with talc claims, <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/johnson-johnson-agrees-pay-5-5b-settle-talc-lawsuits">told</a> Fox News that he helped negotiate the settlement. He also stated that J&amp;J could actually pay $7 billion or more because the settlement does not put a cap on the total payout but rather assigns specific values to qualifying ovarian cancer claims.
&#8220;We got a fair settlement, and our clients are going to be happy with it,&#8221; Seeger <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/johnson-johnson-announces-55-billion-settlement-talc-lawsuits-2026-07-27/">said</a> in an interview with Reuters.
Johnson &amp; Johnson plans to pay $3 billion of the $5.5 billion settlement in 2027 and the remainder in 2028 or later. 95% of claimants must agree to the settlement before it can take effect.
The company previously attempted a legal strategy to have shell-company subsidiaries declare bankruptcy in order to settle these cancer cases, but that proved unsuccessful.

Scientists are growing increasingly optimistic about new frontiers in melanoma treatment, with two promising developments pointing toward unconventional sources for combating the deadliest form of skin cancer.
The most recent breakthrough comes from the icy waters of Antarctica, where a team from the University of South Florida recently completed a six-week expedition to collect samples of ascidians, small marine invertebrates commonly known as sea squirts, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2026/jun/29/sea-squirt-melanoma-treatment-research">The Guardian</a> reports. These creatures naturally produce bacterial toxins to ward off predators, and researchers believe those same toxins could be redirected toward fighting melanoma.
Bill Baker, a USF chemistry professor who led the effort, says early results are encouraging. Tests have already demonstrated that the substance eliminates melanoma cells in mice without harming the animals themselves — a critical early indicator that it could safely behave as a therapeutic drug. Baker described the milestone as a career highlight, noting that moving beyond petri dish results to demonstrating real physiological impact in living animals represents a significant leap forward.
The path to an approved human treatment remains long. Baker acknowledged that rigorous, multi-stage clinical trials would be required before any drug could reach patients. However, knowledge gained during this year&#8217;s expedition — including new insights into how the cancer-killing bacterium coexists inside the ascidian — could help accelerate that timeline.
Laboratory work is already underway in collaboration with the Desert Research Institute and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, including efforts to synthetically reproduce the toxin. That step is critical: harvesting enough of the compound from wild Antarctic organisms would be ecologically destructive and logistically impossible at the scale needed.
The expedition itself was no small feat. Divers descended up to 130 feet in freezing, unpredictable waters, navigating hazards, including leopard seals, shifting sea conditions, and poor visibility.
This discovery adds to a growing body of research exploring novel, non-traditional approaches to melanoma treatment.
In a separate development <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cancer-fighting-vibrating-molecules-99-efficiency-against-lab-cultures-of-melanoma-cells-reported">reported</a> in late 2024, researchers at Rice University made waves with a very different method: using light-activated molecules, dubbed &#8220;molecular jackhammers,&#8221; to physically rupture cancer cells. When stimulated by near-infrared light, these small dye molecules vibrate in unison and tear apart the outer membranes of malignant cells. In laboratory cultures of human melanoma cells, the technique achieved a 99% elimination rate, with half of the mice in animal trials becoming completely tumor-free.
Together, the two lines of research underscore a broader trend: some of the most promising weapons against cancer may come from the natural world or from physics-based approaches that bear little resemblance to conventional chemotherapy — offering renewed hope for patients facing one of oncology&#8217;s toughest diagnoses.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Thursday shared a major health update on her husband’s aggressive cancer battle. 
The top Trump cabinet official revealed her husband, Abraham, was diagnosed with a “very rare” form of cancer called sacral chordoma. The slow-growing bone cancer typically starts in the bones of the spine or skull, according to the Mayo Clinic.  The disease can grow anywhere along the spine and mostly affects adults ages 40 to 60, with surgery as “the main treatment.” 
On Thursday, Gabbard took to X to provide an encouraging update on Abraham’s course of treatment.

A new drug in development has shown promising results in restricting cancer cells&#8217; ability to hide from the immune system and reduced tumors in some patients by at least 30%. 
<a href="https://www.deccanchronicle.com/lifestyle/health-and-well-being/new-experimental-cancer-drug-removes-tumours-invisibility-cloak-early-trial-shows-1960776">Immunotherapy treatments</a> for cancer have improved survival rates, but due to cancer’s ability to play “hide-and-seek,” many drugs become ineffective. However, <a href="https://www.greywolftherapeutics.com/news/greywolf-therapeutics-reports-durable-clinical-responses-with-first-in-class-oral-erap1-inhibitor-grwd5769-across-six-solid-tumor-types">Greywolf Therapeutics</a>, an Oxford-based biotech company that focuses on treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases, developed a <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/jun/01/cancer-smart-drug-cells-invisibility-cloak-shrink-tumours-trial?utm_source=chatgpt.com">drug</a> designed to &#8220;stop cancer cells concealing themselves from the immune system, allowing immunotherapy treatments to identify and destroy them.” 
A trial, led by the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, England, tested 83 patients with cervical, bladder, liver, bowel, lung, or head and neck cancers. The patients were given the drug and immunotherapy treatment, cemiplimab. In the trial across the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Australia, the research found tumors shrank in 26 patients, and 15 of those patients had tumor reductions by at least 30%.

The drug, called GRWD5769, shrank tumors in all six cancer types and halted the progression of the disease for at least six months in 18% of the cervical cancer patients, 32% of liver cancer patients, 36% of bladder cancer patients, 38% of head and neck cancer patients, 51% of bowel cancer patients, and 55% of lung cancer patients. 
The results of the trial were presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting in Chicago by <a href="https://www.greywolftherapeutics.com/news/greywolf-therapeutics-reports-durable-clinical-responses-with-first-in-class-oral-erap1-inhibitor-grwd5769-across-six-solid-tumor-types">Professor Fiona Thistlethwaite,</a> the medical director of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Clinical Research Facility at The Christie. She said that she is excited about the trial because it shows “strong signals of efficacy across six tumor types that have shown great resistance to immunotherapy, with very few side effects. That&#8217;s unusual at such an early stage.” 
Thistlethwaite told The Guardian, “For a drug that is given as a tablet, this is very impressive. It’s early days, and we need further studies, but this is a new drug with a new mechanism that clearly helps immunotherapy perform more effectively.”
The drug works by addressing <a href="https://blogs.iu.edu/sciu/2020/08/22/cancer-invisibility-cloak/">an issue that has plagued</a> scientists for decades: cancer’s ability to play hide-and-seek. The way the body fights foreign cells — bacteria and viruses — is by antigen-presenting cells (APCs) showing T-cells the external invaders, which then fight the disease. The problem with cancer cells is that they are not external invaders, but the body’s own cells, which become mutated. They coat themselves with PD-L1, a protein normal cells produce that works to hide their identity to T-cells, effectively playing hide-and-seek.
The new drug can “reveal hidden tumors through T-cell diversification and priming,” <a href="https://www.greywolftherapeutics.com/grwd5769#:~:text=What%20stage%20of%20development%20is">according to the Greywolf website,</a> which means that through the drug inhibiting ERAP1, it removes cancer’s &#8220;invisibility cloak” and allows T-cells to detect tumor cells originally invisible.

The revelation stunned many in Washington and conservative media circles, especially as the former attorney general has remained closely tied to President Donald Trump following her DOJ exit. Trump is reportedly planning to tap Bondi for a new artificial intelligence advisory role inside the administration.

Former Nebraska Republican Senator Ben Sasse said he does not fear his death during an <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/09/opinion/ben-sasse-death-pancreatic-cancer.html">interview</a> with Ross Douthat earlier this week.

Sasse is now in the fourth month since his diagnosis, having been told he had three to four months to live.
“I believe in the Resurrection, and I believe in a restoration of this world, and so I did not feel great fear about my death,” Sasse said. “I didn’t want the pain I was going through, I didn’t want to be a pansy-ass in my final moments.”
Sasse had a bloody face during his interview, a side effect of a new cancer treatment, he told Douthat. The treatment is extending the lives of cancer patients, but causes bleeding, peeling, and rashes.
“It’s a nasty drug,” Sasse said. “It causes crazy stuff, like my body can’t grow skin, and so I bleed out of a whole bunch of parts of me that shouldn’t be bleeding.”
Sasse has done several interviews since his diagnosis, and he told Douthat he has “time to redeem.”
“You gotta redeem the time, and there’s only so many bits of unsolicited advice I can give my children,” Sasse said when asked why he is choosing to talk to journalists. “You journalists want to talk, and if you don’t have anybody better, I’m your man.”
Although Sasse said he has made peace with his mortality, he added that he does have regrets about having prioritized poorly throughout his life.
“We’re all on the clock, and I wanted to have prioritized better, and whether I really only had three or four months left or if I get nine to 12 months left, I wanna prioritize better from then. But in my tradition, in Christianity, the need for daily repentance is just a truth. I am broken,” Sasse said. “And I get to repent every day of my sins — of both omission and commission. And yet, at a slightly bigger level, if you’re only gonna get three or four months, you really wanna get some of your affairs in order.”
Sasse said he has felt a heaviness about the diagnosis because he does not want to leave his children without a father.
“I knew that God was not surprised by the diagnosis,” Sasse said. “There is not a maverick molecule in the universe. But I didn’t like the idea of my 14-year-old son not having a dad around at 16. I didn’t like the idea of my daughters, who are 22 and 24, not having their dad there to walk them down the aisle.”
Despite his concerns, Sasse said, he is still at peace.
“I’ve continued to feel a peace about the fact that death is something that we should hate, we should call it a wicked thief, and yet, it’s pretty good that you pass through the veil of tears one time and then there will be no more tears,” Sasse said.

Bayer said on Tuesday its Monsanto unit had reached an agreement worth as much as $7.25 billion to resolve tens of thousands of current and future lawsuits claiming that its Roundup weedkiller caused cancer.
The German company said the proposed nationwide settlement, filed on Tuesday in state court in St. Louis, Missouri, would establish a long-term claims program funded by capped annual payments over up to 21 years.
The company, which acquired Roundup as part of its $63 billion purchase of agrochemical company Monsanto in 2018, is facing claims over Roundup from approximately 65,000 plaintiffs in U.S. state and federal courts.
The plaintiffs say they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other forms of cancer after using the weedkiller, either at home or on the job.
Following the announcement, Bayer shares rose as much as 7.7% to reach their highest level since September 12, 2023. Frankfurt-listed Bayer shares were up 7.2% by 1839 GMT.
Bayer said it expects its provisions and litigation liabilities to rise from 7.8 billion euros ($9.24 billion) to 11.8 billion euros. It anticipates around 5 billion euros in litigation-related payouts in 2026, and now expects negative free cash flow for the year.
Roundup is among the most widely used weedkillers in the United States. Bayer has said decades of studies have shown Roundup and its active ingredient, glyphosate, are safe for human use.
The deal covers the bulk of the lawsuits, but requires a judge&#8217;s approval and a minimum number of plaintiffs to opt in. It does not require Bayer to admit liability or wrongdoing and allows the company to back out if too many plaintiffs decline to participate.
It is also designed to head off future lawsuits, and allows people who can prove they have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and were exposed to Roundup prior to Tuesday to file claims to receive a portion of the settlement up to 21 years from now.
The agreement was negotiated with Motley Rice, Seeger Weiss and other law firms that would represent a nationwide class of plaintiffs, if the court allows the deal to proceed.
Bayer CEO Bill Anderson said on a call with investors and reporters that he is confident the proposed class action settlement will resolve the vast majority of the claims, although he declined to say how many people currently support the deal.
Attorneys who negotiated on behalf of the plaintiffs said the deal represents the best path forward. Payouts will be determined by a tiered system that considers exposure, age at diagnosis and cancer type. Individuals could receive up to $198,000 or more, according to attorney Eric Holland.
The company said it had separately reached confidential settlements to resolve other Roundup cases with specific law firms, although the company would not name the firms or specify the amount of those deals.
Tuesday&#8217;s proposed settlement comes after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal in a case that Bayer argues will sharply limit its liability in the litigation.
The company said the Supreme Court case, scheduled for oral arguments at the end of April, remains essential to resolving the Roundup litigation.
Bayer is arguing that consumers should not be able to sue it under state law for failing to warn that Roundup increases cancer risk because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has found no such risk and requires no such warning. Bayer argued that federal law does not allow it to add any warning to the product beyond the EPA-approved label.
A favorable ruling would wipe out several large verdicts that remain on appeal and could also prevent future claims from individuals who choose to opt out of the nationwide settlement.
Bayer investors welcomed news of the proposed settlement but some, like Markus Manns, portfolio manager at Bayer shareholder Union Investment, cautioned it was &#8220;not yet the breakthrough that many investors had hoped for.&#8221;
&#8220;The settlement buys Bayer time, but without a win in the Supreme Court, a new wave of lawsuits could roll over Bayer in a few years,&#8221; Manns said.
The company had previously paid about $10 billion to settle most of the Roundup lawsuits that were pending as of 2020, but failed to get a settlement then covering future cases.
It has had a mixed record with cases that have gone to trial. It prevailed in a series of Roundup trials, but has been hit with large jury awards in the past few years, including a $2.1 billion verdict in a case in the U.S. state of Georgia in March.
The verdicts shattered both investor confidence and company hopes that the worst of the Roundup litigation was over, and put pressure on Bayer to find a comprehensive solution to the lawsuits.
