“Dirty Jobs” host Mike Rowe recently revealed what he considers the single most dangerous job in the world, one he said he would “never do again.”
The blue-collar work advocate and popular TV host discussed the topic during a recent podcast episode, saying out of all the disgusting, death-defying job sites he’s explored, one stands out as being particularly treacherous. That came when he was opal mining in Australia.
The question posed by podcaster Shawn Ryan mentioned how Allied soldiers during the Vietnam War called “tunnel rats” would volunteer to crawl into deep, pitch-black Viet Cong tunnel networks to find enemies, gather info, and clear booby traps. 
Rowe said the tunnel rat gig was “tough to beat” in terms of being terrible, but also was able to come up with a modern equivalent that he would never do again.

“Opal mining. In the Australian outback, in a little town called Coober Pedy. It was 129 degrees when I was there that day. This is the opal capital of the world &#8230; the city itself is underground. It’s too hot to live above,” Rowe said on “The Shawn Ryan Show” last week.
He said the way to look for opals is to dig prospect shafts up to 60 feet deep to start looking for the gemstones. He described being that far underground with nothing but a flashlight and a hard hat as being “in a grave.” 
“The opal miners, on the other hand, are kind of like crab fishermen in the desert, and on steroids. Because there’s no OSHA in this part of the world,” he went on, saying he’s been in all types of mines but none like this before. “The night before we got to Coober Pedy, I wanted to look at the opal fields because we were gonna be working there all the next day … and I’m a little worried. They [flew] me over the fields.”
“When you look down, there are thousands of these prospect shafts that have been dug over the years. None of them are filled in. … As I’m flying, the pilot’s like, ‘Yeah, it&#8217;s a hell of a thing &#8230; There’s a lot of wildlife out here. There&#8217;s emu, there&#8217;s ostrich, kangaroo. There are hundreds of them at the bottom of these shafts. They fall in all the time … and they die down there.’ I said, ‘Well, that’s terrible.’” 
Rowe also said he was told sometimes tourists die in the open shafts while trying to capture pictures of the sunset.

So if an Israeli is in Australia and God forbid something happened to him and he comes to your hospital, would you kill him?&#8221;
Nadir answered by making a throat-slitting gesture, then said: &#8220;You have no idea how many Israelis came to this hospital and —&#8221; before trailing off. The judge acknowledged the obvious outrageousness of what was said — calling the nurses&#8217; alleged statements &#8220;at the very least likely highly disturbing to right-minded people&#8221; — but tossed the evidence anyway, citing both the privacy violation and the footage&#8217;s already-massive spread across social media and news outlets worldwide.
Prosecutors had argued the random, public nature of ChatRoulette meant the nurses had no reasonable expectation of privacy. &#8220;Not all private conversations are created equal,&#8221; Crown prosecutor Justin Hannebery KC said.
The pair, who pleaded not guilty, are still scheduled to face trial August 31. Both were fired and suspended indefinitely from practicing nursing anywhere in Australia after the video went viral.

Pavlou’s posts were a direct response to Eilish’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/billie-eilish-roundly-mocked-for-stolen-land-comments-at-grammys?author=Amanda+Harding&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Billie+Eilish+Roundly+Mocked+For+%E2%80%98Stolen+Land%E2%80%99+Comments+At+Grammys">remarks</a> during her acceptance speech at the Grammy Awards, where she declared, “No one is illegal on stolen land,” before adding, “F–k ICE.”
In the days following the speech, Pavlou <a href="https://x.com/DrewPavlou/status/2018442764384637336">launched</a> a crowdfunding campaign claiming he would travel to the United States and attempt to move into Eilish’s home, echoing her “stolen land” framing. “I am flying to the USA next Friday to attempt to move into Billie Eilish’s beachside Malibu mansion,” he wrote, adding, “No human being is illegal on stolen land.”
The fundraiser was later <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/04/us-news/australian-activist-drew-pavlou-launches-campaign-to-move-into-billie-eilishs-la-mansion-after-stolen-land-grammys-rant/">removed</a> after the platform said it could not verify his plan or the recipient of the donations. Pavlou subsequently launched a new fundraiser on GiveSendGo seeking money to fly to California and “buy” the property.
The mansion Pavlou referenced was not owned by Eilish herself but by her brother, Finneas O’Connell, and had been sold in 2022 for $5.6 million, according to the Los Angeles Times. The home was later destroyed in the Palisades Fire. Pavlou said he was unaware of that fact when he created the fundraiser.
In follow-up posts, Pavlou leaned into the irony of the situation, mocking the outcome as an unintended endorsement of border enforcement by leftist figures.
“She literally said ‘no one is illegal on stolen land’ but called ICE on me,” Pavlou <a href="https://x.com/DrewPavlou/status/2023307696947310683">wrote</a>. “Honestly amazing performance art — I somehow managed to get Billie Eilish and American liberals to endorse border control and deportations.”
Pavlou also claimed immigration officials questioned him extensively about his past activism, including his opposition to the Chinese Communist Party, describing the experience as “legitimately insane.”
Neither Eilish nor her representatives have publicly commented on Pavlou’s claims, and DHS has not confirmed whether any contact occurred between the singer’s legal team and immigration authorities.
Still, the episode has drawn attention online as a case study in the tension between celebrity activism and real-world immigration enforcement — and as Pavlou framed it, proof that even slogans about “stolen land” have limits when it comes to the expense of the sloganeers.

A 13-year-old Australian boy has gone viral after swimming for hours to get help for his family after they drifted out to sea.
The family was together using kayaks and paddleboards on Friday morning, but drifted too far offshore when weather conditions changed and were unable to make it back. This resulted in Austin Appelbee swimming 2.5 miles back to shore to get help, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/rescue-australia-swim-boy-c191a2f24e9aa594c073faa2d8c00086">reported</a>. 
“The waves are massive and I have no life jacket on. … I just kept thinking ‘just keep swimming, just keep swimming,’” Appelbee said of his amazing feat of strength and courage. “And then I finally, I made it to shore and I hit the bottom of the beach and I just collapsed.”
The teen originally tried to take one of the kayaks to go get help, but it began to take on water, and he had to abandon it. He was forced to remove his life jacket as well because it hindered his efforts to get back to shore.
Appelbee was able to alert authorities, who performed a helicopter rescue of his family members still adrift off the coast of Quindalup Beach in Western Australia. His mother, Joanne Appelbee, 12-year-old brother Beau, and 8-year-old sister Grace were all rescued hours after he left them. By the time of their rescue, the family had drifted 8.5 miles from the shore.
&#8220;I didn&#8217;t think I was a hero &#8211; I just did what I did,” he said of what happened, BBC <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly3ezj3rg3o">reported</a>. &#8220;I was thinking about mum, Beau, and Grace. I was also thinking about my friends and my girlfriend &#8211; I have a really good bunch of friends,&#8221; Appelbee added. &#8220;When I hit the floor I thought, how am I on land right now &#8211; is this a dream?&#8221;
Appelbee’s mom said she didn&#8217;t have an easy time letting him go. “One of the hardest decisions I ever had to make was to say to Austin: ‘Try and get to shore and get some help. This could get really serious really quickly,’” she told reporters, per the AP.
“The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough — his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings,” Inspector James Bradley of the South West District office said in a statement.  “This incident is a reminder that ocean conditions can change rapidly. Thankfully, all three people were wearing life jackets, which contributed to their survival.”
Rescuers called the teen’s heroic actions “superhuman.”
The family members were all evaluated and treated for minor injuries. None required hospitalization. Appelbee used crutches briefly due to having sore legs.

France&#8217;s National Assembly on Monday backed legislation to ban children under 15 years old from social media on Monday, amid growing concerns about online bullying and mental health risks.
The bill proposes banning under-15s from social networks and &#8220;social networking functionalities&#8221; embedded within broader platforms, and reflects rising public angst over the impact of social media on minors.
Lawmakers voted 116 to 23 in favor of the bill. It now passes to the Senate before a final vote in the lower house.
President Emmanuel Macron has pointed to social media as one factor to blame for violence among young people. He is urging France to follow Australia, whose world-first ban for under-16s on social media platforms including Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube came into force in December.
Macron wants the ban in place in time for the start of the next academic year in September.
&#8220;With this law, we are setting a clear boundary in society and saying social media is not harmless,&#8221; centrist lawmaker Laure Miller told the chamber as she presented the bill.
&#8220;Our children are reading less, sleeping less, and comparing themselves to one another more,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;This is a battle for free minds.&#8221;
Australia&#8217;s social media ban is being studied in countries including Britain, Denmark, Spain and Greece.
The European Parliament has called for the European Union to set minimum ages for children to access social media, although it is up to member states to impose age limits.
There is broad political and public support in France for curbing minors&#8217; access to social media.
Far-right lawmaker Thierry Perez said the bill responded to a &#8220;health emergency.&#8221;
&#8220;Social media has allowed everyone to express themselves, but at what cost to our children?” Perez said.
The French ban would require platforms to block access to young teenagers through age‑verification mechanisms compliant with European Union law.
Enforcing such bans can be difficult. Australia&#8217;s government acknowledged the rollout of its ban would be bumpy after children claiming to be under 16 flooded the country&#8217;s social media feeds with messages gloating about their continued ability to access networks.
The French legislation also extends an existing ban on smartphones in junior and middle schools to cover high schools.
A Harris Interactive survey in 2024 showed 73% of the public supported a ban on social media access for under-15s.
Teenagers on the streets of Paris were split in their views. Some said they acknowledged the dangers associated with social media. Others felt a ban was excessive.

According to Ryan, the new legal codes would allow the government to outlaw groups that have engaged in “hate crimes,” even if no other existing statute had been violated. Both sets of new laws ignore the real problems that led to the Bondi Beach attack. As Ryan says, “The underlying cause of what occurred in Bondi and the underlying cause of the sort of ethnic tensions that are playing out on the street has been the problems with our immigration program in Australia.”

The proposal would give Australia&#8217;s Department of Home Affairs more power &#8220;to cancel or reject visas for those who spread hate and division.&#8221;
The plan would also create a &#8220;new aggravated hate speech&#8221; charge for religious preachers and leaders who promote violence and would develop a list of organizations led by people who engage in violent rhetoric or promote racial hatred.
&#8220;Every Jewish Australian has the right to feel safe, valued and respected for the contribution that they make to our great nation,&#8221; Albanese <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgmneem1e89o">said</a> at a press conference. He added, &#8220;The terrorists, inspired by ISIS &#8230; sought to turn Australians against each other.&#8221;
Albanese has been criticized by many in Australia&#8217;s Jewish community for ignoring the rise in threats toward Jewish people since Hamas&#8217; terrorist attack on Israel more than two years ago. After Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, Jillian Segal, put forward a plan earlier this year to address antisemitism and “hate speech,” Albanese was accused of ignoring the proposal and failing to push back against antisemitism following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas terror attack. On Thursday, Albanese acknowledged that criticism from the Jewish community over his earlier inaction was valid.
&#8220;I accept my responsibility for the part in that as prime minister of Australia,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But what I also do is accept my responsibility to lead the nation and unite the nation. Because what people are looking for at this time isn&#8217;t more division.&#8221;
