Israeli archaeologists have found a stone seal from 2,700 years ago, when the Biblical First Temple was still standing, again affirming the reality of the Biblical history of Jerusalem.
“This singular find joins the list of countless archeological discoveries in the City of David &#8211; the historic site of Biblical Jerusalem &#8211; affirming Jerusalem&#8217;s Biblical heritage,” Ze&#8217;ev Orenstein, director of International Affairs for the City of David Foundation, told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/faith-values/israeli-archaeologists-discover-unique-ancient-seal-affirming-biblical-account-jerusalem-2700-years-ago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> of the seal found near the southern wall of the Temple Mount, adding, “It similarly serves as yet another affirmation of the thousands-of-year-old bond rooting the Jewish people in Jerusalem &#8211; not simply as a matter of faith, but as a matter of fact.”
“The seal, made of black stone, is one of the most beautiful ever discovered in excavations in ancient Jerusalem, and is executed at the highest artistic level,” Dr. Yuval Baruch and Navot Rom of the Israel Antiquities Authority stated. The name “LeYehoʼezer ben Hoshʼayahu” is inscribed on the seal.

“Contrary to what may be commonly thought, it seems that literacy in this period was not the realm only of society’s elite,” Baruch continued. “People knew how to read and write – at least at the basic level, for the needs of commerce. The figure of a winged man in a distinct Neo-Assyrian style is unique and very rare in the glyphic styles of the late First Temple period. The influence of the Assyrian Empire, which had conquered the entire region, is clearly evident here.”
“The researchers believe that the object, upon which originally the demon image alone appeared, was worn as an amulet around the neck of a man named Hoshʼayahu, who held a senior position in the Kingdom of Judah’s administration,” VIN News<a href="https://vinnews.com/2024/08/29/first-temple-seal-bearing-biblical-name-yehoezer-ben-hoshayahu-found-near-temple-mount/"> reported</a>. “The hypothesis is that upon Hoshʼayahu’s passing, his son Yehoʼezer inherited the seal&#8230;”
The name Yehoʼezer appears in the Bible in Chronicles I 12:7 in its abbreviated form, Yoʼezer, named as a warrior for King David before he was king and was in hiding.
“Also, in the book of Yirmiyahu (43:2), describing the events of this very period, a person is mentioned with a parallel name, Azariah ben Hoshʼaya. The two parts of his first name are written in reverse order to the seal owner’s name, and his second name is the same, appearing in its abbreviated form. This writing form in the text fits the name on the newly discovered seal and it is thus appropriate for this time period,” VIN News <a href="https://vinnews.com/2024/08/29/first-temple-seal-bearing-biblical-name-yehoezer-ben-hoshayahu-found-near-temple-mount/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>.
Palestinians often insist that the Jewish claim of the Biblical Temples on the Temple Mount is false; in June 2022, the prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority, Mohammed Shtayyeh, said that the Jews of Israel have never proven that the Biblical Temples stood in Jerusalem.
Yet as far back as 1924, even the Supreme Muslim Council, headed by the infamous Jew-hater Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Hajj Amin Aa-Husseini, published a guide to the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism and the site of the Biblical Temples of Israel, which admitted of the Temple Mount, “Its identity of Solomon’s Temple is beyond dispute.”
In February 2018, archaeologists announced that they found physical evidence corroborating the existence of the Biblical prophet Isaiah.
Writing in <a href="https://www.baslibrary.org/biblical-archaeology-review/44/2/7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biblical Archaeology Review</a>, Eilat Mazar, who headed the dig at which the discovery was found, described the evidence. According to <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/did-archaeologists-just-prove-the-existence-of-prophet-isaiah?source=twitter&amp;via=mobile" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Beast</a>, Mazar stated that it was “a small piece of clay (an impression left by a seal), a mere 0.4 inches long, which appears to bear the inscription ‘Isaiah the prophet.’”

The discovery came as part of the excavations at the Ophel excavation in Jerusalem, which had <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/does-this-tiny-piece-of-clay-mean-the-bible-is-true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">already yielded</a> a 2,700-year-old clay seal impression that had belonged to the governor of Jerusalem, thus proving that the Jewish people had an administrative presence almost three thousand years ago and that Biblical administrative structures were genuine.
Mazar wrote that the new find, one of the many clay seal impressions known as bullae found at the site, was near the bullae <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/archaeologist-says-the-bibles-king-hezekiah-is-real" target="_blank" rel="noopener">already discovered</a> to have a mark from a seal of the Biblical King Hezekiah. He noted, “alongside the bullae of Hezekiah … [were] 22 additional bullae … among these is the bulla of ‘Yesha‘yah[u] Nvy[?].’” That is Hebrew for Isaiah the Prophet.
According to the Book of Isaiah, the prophet lived from the 8th century B.C. to the 7th century B.C. during the reign of King Hezekiah, who was regarded as the greatest king the Jewish people had except for King David.

Ben Shapiro: Here you start to see the beginnings of the age of a constitutional monarchy. There are even hints of this in Deuteronomy. One of the laws in Deuteronomy is that the king is supposed to carry around his own Sefer Torah. He&#8217;s subject to the law. The king is not above the law. Judaism is very clear about that and so is Christianity. Henceforth, the idea of limitations on absolute government are part and parcel of the whole system.
Jordan B. Peterson: One of the things that, to me, lends historical credence to those sorts of stories is that it does not exactly show David in a positive light. So what kind of propaganda is that exactly?

Shapiro: That is definitely one of the things in favor of biblical narrative is that when you show all the warts, it suggests that you&#8217;re not propagandizing.
Peterson: Yes, definitely. And that happens a lot.
Shapiro: That&#8217;s the entire Exodus story. The idea is that you have an absolute monarch in Pharaoh, and he is a god, so everything he says goes. Then people are brought forth from slavery to freedom, but the freedom requires subjugation to God. You&#8217;re still a servant, but you&#8217;re not a servant of a person anymore. Now, you&#8217;re a servant of an ideal. You&#8217;re a servant of a higher power. And that means inherently limiting the power of human beings.
Shapiro: This is like a massive cistern.
Ze’ev Orenstein (Director of International Affairs): So, you see here, it&#8217;s an ancient cistern. You see the plaster, here, on that wall that would keep the water in.
Peterson: So people would have carved this out of the rock?

Orenstein: Sure. One of the challenges that Israel still has is water scarcity. And so here&#8217;s how you would store water. Now, keep in mind, if we are coming from next to the palace, this is not a private person’s cistern. This, you can see, is a massive area. This is the cistern that archeologists believe could have been the cistern where Jeremiah was thrown into a pit. Jeremiah was perceived at that time to be a traitor. He had said that if the people don&#8217;t change their ways, Jerusalem is going to be destroyed. But he was a prophet of doom. Nobody wanted to hear what he had to say, and the advisors of King Zedekiah got tired of hearing this guy go around calling for the surrender of the city, so they threw him down into a pit. Now, can I tell you for sure Jeremiah is thrown into this pit? I can&#8217;t tell you that, and if not this one, it was one near here like this one.
Peterson: All pits are the same, if you’re thrown into them.

Orenstein: Here, they say, what&#8217;s the plan? He&#8217;s going to drown, right? It’s a cistern. But the Bible makes it clear: There&#8217;s no water; there&#8217;s mud. And he&#8217;s sinking into the mud until a servant to the king goes before Zedekiah, and he says, “You might not like what Jeremiah is saying, but it’s not him who’s saying it. He’s a prophet. He&#8217;s a man of God. The words are God&#8217;s words. You can&#8217;t do this to Jeremiah.” And the king says, “All right, you&#8217;re right. Go take 30 people with you and pull Jeremiah up out of the pit.” And then it goes on to say how he keeps true to his message about what&#8217;s going to happen to Jerusalem. But this is where, back to the last days of Jerusalem before the Babylonians destroyed it, you have Jeremiah here sinking into the mud, hearing the impending destruction above. This is where it’s playing out. We take for granted today the ability to be critical of our leadership, to hold our leaders accountable. But going back thousands of years, there was a position in biblical times, that of the prophet, whose role was to go to the highest levels of society and to hold those leaders accountable and let them know that there are consequences for falling short. There are consequences for making poor decisions, unethical decisions.

Shapiro: Both the Judaic side of government and the Greek side of government are predicated on the idea that there are limitations to what government can do. You can make the case that the biblically based system is more of a limited monarchy, where the powers of the king are fairly limited, but the kingship is not derived from the people. And the Greek system is that authority is derived from the people and is almost unlimited. When Aristotle talks about how there are three types of governments and all have the capacity to devolve into tyranny, that&#8217;s what he&#8217;s talking about. You can have a benevolent monarch, which is more like the biblical system, but even the Bible is pretty divided over whether kings are good or necessary. Samuel gives a whole speech before the appointment of King Saul, saying, “You guys are really going to hate this king thing. You probably shouldn&#8217;t do it.” And the people say, “Well, no. We want it anyway.” And God says, “Ok, fine. If they want it, they&#8217;re going to get it.”

A deep-sea expedition group says that it has discovered what appears to be Amelia Earhart’s plane, which went missing after the famed pilot crashed somewhere in the South Pacific during her flight around the world.

Deep Sea Vision says that it believes Earhart and her navigator got off track because they forgot to take into account the International Date Line leading them to be off target and crash into the ocean.
“This is maybe the most exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life,” Deep See Vision CEO Tim Romeo <a href="https://www.wsj.com/science/amelia-earhart-lost-plane-found-843e9e9c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Wall Street Journal of a return trip to survey the wreckage. “I feel like a 10-year-old going on a treasure hunt.” 
The group posted photos of the wreck on Sunday, announcing news of the find.
“On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan took off from Papua New Guinea, nearing the end of their record-setting journey around the world never to be seen again. Until today,” Deep Sea Vision said.

Romeo, a former U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, said that the plane appears to be in good condition despite its being in the ocean for over 80 years.
&#8220;We always felt that she [Earhart] would have made every attempt to land the aircraft gently on the water, and the aircraft signature that we see in the sonar image suggests that may be the case,” he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re thrilled to have made this discovery at the tail end of our expedition, and we plan to bring closure to a great American story.&#8221;

The discovery of the craft was made after the group searched over 5,200 miles of ocean over a 90 day period. The group used the <a href="https://www.deepseavision.com/service-details#wreck-hunting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HUGIN 6000</a>, an autonomous underwater vehicle, to search massive portions of the ocean at a time.
Dorothy Cochrane, aeronautics curator at the Smithsonian&#8217;s National Air and Space Museum, said that she was looking into Deep Sea Vision’s findings.
&#8220;We are intrigued with DSV&#8217;s initial imagery and believe it merits another expedition in the continuing search for Amelia Earhart&#8217;s aircraft near Howland Island,” she said.

&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting to be a part of a story that&#8217;s bigger than ourselves — to be a part of bringing a story to life that has significance not for millions, but for billions,&#8221; Ze&#8217;ev Orenstein, director of international affairs for the City of David Foundation, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6336698717112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News Digital.
The discovery comes amid an excavation project in the ancient city of the Middle East carried out by the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Israel National Parks Authority, and the City of David Foundation, which works to preserve and develop the city and its environs by connecting people through different faiths and backgrounds in Jerusalem.
Construction crews and archaeologists began working on an excavation project at the historic site of Biblical Jerusalem in 2004 after a large water pipe south of Jerusalem&#8217;s Temple Mount, at the southern end of the ridge known as the City of David, burst, according to the Biblical Archaeology Society.
In recent weeks, however, archaeologists discovered a set of eight steps at the project site — about the size of two Olympic swimming pools — dating back to the days when Jesus and millions of others used the pool as an ancient ritual bath.
According to the <a href="https://www.bible.com/bible/114/JHN.9.6-10.NKJV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gospel of John</a>, the story of Jesus and the blind man at the pool began when Jesus and His disciples encountered a man who had been blind since birth. The disciples asked Jesus if the man or his parents caused him to be born blind. Jesus answered that neither caused his disability, but rather, the man had been born blind so that God&#8217;s work might be revealed in him.
&#8220;We must do the work of him who sent me while day lasts; night is coming when no man can work,&#8221; Jesus said. &#8220;While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.&#8221;
Jesus then put clay made from the ground and his saliva over the blind man&#8217;s eyes and said to him, &#8220;Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam.&#8221;

The blind man went to the pool, washed the clay from his eyes, and returned with his vision restored.
Construction of the pool reportedly began more than 2,700 years ago when Judean King Hezekiah first ordered the digging of a 1,750-foot tunnel under the City of David to bring water from the Gihon Spring, which lay outside the city wall, inside the city to a pool on the opposite side of the ridge, according to the <a href="https://www.biblicalarchaeology.org/daily/biblical-sites-places/biblical-archaeology-sites/the-siloam-pool-where-jesus-healed-the-blind-man/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biblical Archaeology Society</a>.
Hezekiah foresaw the likelihood of a looming attack from the Assyrians and presumed the water supply would help the Judeans survive. The tunnel continued to carry fresh water into the part of Jerusalem that would lead to the construction of several different pools, including the Second Temple pool that Jesus knew.
More than 2,000 years later, the biblical site revered by Christians and Jews worldwide marvels at the discovery.
&#8220;The ongoing excavations within the City of David — the historic site of Biblical Jerusalem — particularly of the Pool of Siloam and the Pilgrimage Road, serve as one of the greatest affirmations of that heritage and the millennia-old bond Jews and Christians have with Jerusalem,&#8221; Orenstein said.
The site, which runs from the Pool of Siloam in the south along the Pilgrimage Road and up to the footsteps of the Western Wall, Southern Steps, and Temple Mount, represents the most significant half-mile on the planet, he added.
&#8220;There is no half mile that means more to more people that affirms Jerusalem&#8217;s biblical heritage not simply as a matter of faith, but as a matter of fact,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;And obviously living in a time where so much of biblical heritage is being questioned — to be able to be unearthing all of this historical heritage and antiquity that shows that whether for Jews or Christians, that you could see it, you could touch it, you could walk on it, that really our heritage in Jerusalem going back thousands of years, not simply a matter of faith, but a matter of fact, being unearthed here in the city of David,&#8221; he added.
In January, Rev. Johnnie Moore, president of the Congress of Christian Leaders, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/steps-where-jesus-walked-and-healed-a-blind-man-unearthed-for-first-time-in-2000-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News Digital, &#8220;In the Pool of Siloam, we find evidence of history preserved for us, revealed at just the right time.&#8221;
&#8220;Theologically, it affirms scripture, geographically it affirms scripture, and politically, it affirms Israel&#8217;s unquestionable and unrivaled link to Jerusalem. Some discoveries are theoretical,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This one is an undeniable. It is proof of the story of the Bible and of its people, Israel.&#8221;
Visitors have accessed a small section of the pool previously excavated, but the City of David plans to open the entire historic site once crews complete the project.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a big responsibility. And it&#8217;s also a big privilege, and the best is truly yet to come,&#8221; Orenstein said.

A ship that sank into the depths of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lake Michigan</a> in 1881 has been discovered by shipwreck hunters, who described the ship as being like “a time capsule” into the past because of how well it has survived over the years. 
The Trinidad, a schooner that transported grain between Wisconsin, Illinois, and New York, was <a href="https://apnews.com/article/wisconsin-shipwreck-trinidad-discovered-lake-michigan-687b68a5a1572dcb9089d8cf2b3d438b" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> in July by Brendon Baillod and Robert Jaeck. The remains of the ship were found roughly 10 miles off the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/wisconsin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wisconsin</a> coastline two years after the two maritime historians began their mission. 
“We were stunned to see that not only was the deckhouse still on her, but it still had all the cabinets with all the dishes stacked in them and all the crew’s effects,” Baillod <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/02/us/lake-michigan-trinidad-shipwreck.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the New York Times. “It’s really like a ship in a bottle. It’s a time capsule.”

There were eight men aboard the ship who escaped in a lifeboat and made it to Algoma, Wisconsin, in May 1881. The ship&#8217;s dog went down with the wreck. 
&#8220;The captain and the crew immediately escaped in the ship’s yawl and after battling waves, the cold crew made it in to Algoma (then Ahnapee). The only loss aboard the TRINIDAD was the ship’s mascot, a large Newfoundland dog who was asleep next to the stove when the ship began to sink,&#8221; the Wisconsin Historical Society <a href="https://www.facebook.com/wisconsinhistoricalsociety/posts/pfbid033JSvKSQN4TfYVQCTSvpZiTxJpr7BajL7Vhw5kDy6EbdMnB5qgPXV3hsiMGuexWaVl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Baillod and Jaeck used the account written by John Higgins, the ship’s captain, to help them locate areas to search for the wreck. 
“The wreck is among the best-preserved shipwrecks in Wisconsin waters with her deck-house still intact, containing the crew’s possessions and her anchors and deck gear still present,” a press release on the ship’s finding said. 
The Wisconsin Historical Society helped to charter an underwater craft to survey the wreckage of the Trinidad and confirm its location.

The ship was originally constructed in 1867 and used to facilitate grain trade between the upper Midwest, Pennsylvania, and New York. The 140-foot long schooner went down with a load of coal after it sprung a leak going through the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal in Door County Wisconsin, according to the Associated Press. The ship was reportedly not well kept, which contributed to its demise. 
“If you lived in Philadelphia, Boston or New York in the 1860s and ’70s and you’re eating a sandwich, the bread in that sandwich was almost certainly grown in Wisconsin and brought on a schooner,” Baillod told the Times. 
Baillod said that he hopes that the wrecked ship could be made visible to the public. 
“These are resources that are held in public stewardship, owned by the public,” he said. “They should be visible by the public.”

A man recently made the discovery of a lifetime when he unearthed a massive cache of rare Civil War-era coins — the majority of them gold — on his Kentucky farm earlier this year. 
The incredible find, <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/07/11/man-discovers-700-civil-war-coins-worth-millions-buried-at-kentucky-farm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dubbed</a> the “Great Kentucky Hoard,” could be worth millions of dollars. The unidentified man who found the coins recorded himself as he sifted through the dirt, pointing out the different types of gold coins he had discovered. The location of the discovery has not been revealed. 
“This is the most insane thing ever,” the man said in the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JDUdmp-L3Q&amp;t=19s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a>. “These are all $1 gold coins, $20 gold coins, $10 gold coins and, look, I’m still diggin’ them out.”
The rare coins date between 1840 and 1863 and include eighteen 1863-P $20 Gold Liberty coins, which is the rarest year for that specific coin, <a href="https://www.govmint.com/great-kentucky-hoard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to GovMint, a coin dealer. These reportedly often fetch six figures. 
Additionally, “hundreds” of American gold dollars from 1850 to 1862 were discovered, as reported by the Numismatic Guaranty Company, a coin grading service. Roughly 95% of the hoard is made up of gold dollars, and some silver coins were also discovered.

“The importance of this discovery cannot be overstated, as the stunning number of over 700 gold dollars represents a virtual time capsule of Civil War-era coinage, including coins from the elusive Dahlonega Mint,” rare coin dealer Jeff Garrett <a href="https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/11795/kentucky-hoard-civil-war-coins/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> of the hoard.
The story behind the hoard is also interesting, as it’s often reported that wealthy Kentuckians buried much of their wealth to prevent it from being stolen from bootleggers and outlaws, the Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12287423/Kentucky-man-digs-700-rare-coins-worth-MILLIONS-know-youre-sitting-fortune.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes</a>. Georgia Southern University archeologist Ryan McNutt <a href="https://www.livescience.com/archaeology/kentucky-man-finds-over-700-civil-war-era-coins-buried-in-his-cornfield" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Live Science, &#8220;given the time period and the location in Kentucky, which was neutral at the time, it is entirely possible this was buried in advance of Confederate John Hunt Morgan&#8217;s June to July 1863 raid.&#8221; 
Just a month after the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in 1861, Kentucky Democratic Governor Beriah Magoffin officially <a href="https://www.battlefields.org/learn/articles/house-divided-civil-war-kentucky" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> the state neutral, making Kentucky one of four slave states <a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/civil-war-glass-negatives/articles-and-essays/time-line-of-the-civil-war/1861/#:~:text=Four%20Slave%20States%20Stay%20in,kept%20these%20states%20from%20seceding." target="_blank" rel="noopener">not to secede</a> from the Union, despite divided loyalties among the citizenry. Two years later, after numerous successful raids of the Bluegrass State, Morgan and his men set out from Sparta, Tennessee, and made their way into Kentucky. His attack would go into Indiana and end in Ohio, and it cost the Union hundreds of thousands of dollars in both military and civilian property damages, <a href="https://www.battlefields.org/learn/articles/morgans-great-raid-1863" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the American Battlefield Trust.

An archeologist who believes the Biblical city of Sodom was located at a site in Jordan recently explained his view in a fascinating <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzZH1HfY5uk&amp;t=1114s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a>. 
Dr. Steven Collins, Trinity Southwest University’s <a href="https://trinitysouthwest.com/faculty-administration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Executive</a> Dean, <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2023/07/11/archaeologist-claims-jordan-site-sodom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a> to Joel Rosenberg, host of The Rosenberg Report, why he believes Sodom — which, along with Gomorrah, was destroyed by God with fire and brimstone because of its wickedness — is actually located at Tell el-Hammam in Jordan, as opposed to the more popular view that Sodom was located at a site near the south of the Dead Sea. 
“There’s so much specific information about the location of these cities that you would practically have to be blind and illiterate not to be able to find the location of Sodom because there are at least 25 known pieces of geography [in scripture] that you can triangulate between to take you to the city of Sodom,” Collins told Rosenberg in an interview that aired last month. 
Rosenberg said he began excavating the site 18 years ago, which is close to the mouth of the Jordan River and northeast of Jerusalem. During the first season of digging, a piece of pottery believed to be a storage jar was reportedly discovered that looked “melted on the surface.” 
The archeologist told the host that a member of his dig team said it looked similar to trinitite, which is the <a href="https://www.orau.org/health-physics-museum/collection/nuclear-weapons/trinity/trinitite.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">glassy residue</a> left on the floor of the desert in Alamogordo, New Mexico, after a nuclear bomb test in 1945. 
“There was a little – about a one-and-a-half, two-millimeter flow of that glass over the edge of the break,” Collins said of the pottery. “So it was obviously a flash heat.”
Another piece of evidence Collins points to as possibly supporting his account is a 2021 <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-97778-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> that said a “Tunguska sized airburst” destroyed the ancient city of Tell el-Hammam, which is the same location Collins is claiming was once Sodom. 
“All the observations stated in Genesis are consistent with a cosmic airburst,” James Kennett, one of the authors of the study, <a href="https://www.news.ucsb.edu/2021/020400/ancient-disaster" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “[B]ut there’s no scientific proof that this destroyed city is indeed the Sodom of the Old Testament.”
One piece of scripture Collins believes supports his hypothesis is Genesis 13, which says Lot traveled from Bethel and Ai to the east before pitching his tent near Sodom. This is a “verbal map” to get to Sodom, the archeologist believes, adding that Tell el-Hammam is east of Bethel and Ai.
Many Biblical archeologists and scholars believe that Sodom was actually located at an ancient city called Bab edh-Dhrahe in the south of the Dead Sea, Answers in Genesis <a href="https://answersingenesis.org/archaeology/have-we-found-sodom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes</a>. According to the organization, Bab edh-Dhrahe is more likely the site of Sodom based on discoveries of early pottery and evidence of fiery destruction. They also cite various scriptural references which point to Sodom being south of the Dead Sea, including Genesis 10, Genesis 14, Genesis 19, and Ezekiel 16.

Archeologist Explains Why He Believes He Discovered Biblical City Of Sodom

Archeologists working at the ancient volcanic ruins of Pompeii, Italy, discovered what looked like a painting of a pizza, a discovery that could have rewritten the history of the Italian dish. 
The depiction shows a circular, flat piece of dough — but not with the toppings that appear on traditional pizzas today. Instead of pepperoni, cheese, and sausage, this pie was a “support” for pomegranate, spices and herbs, a date, and what appears to be a type of pesto, according to the <a href="http://pompeiisites.org/en/comunicati/pompeii-a-still-life-discovered-by-the-new-excavations-of-regio-ix/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> from the Archeological Park of Pompeii. 
“What was represented on the wall of an ancient Pompeian house could be a distant ancestor of the modern dish,” the news release said. 
Alongside the fruit and bread, which archeologists describe as a focaccia, a goblet of wine sits on the silver platter. The press release says that two primary ingredients for a traditional pizza are missing — tomato and mozzarella. The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/italy-pompeii-pizza-d421fa838dfcfb35213d2f62353b7c38" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes</a> that during this time period, neither of those ingredients were available. Tomatoes were brought to Italy around <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/tomato-italy-history/index.html#:~:text=The%20tomato%2C%20it%20turns%20out,made%20its%20way%20to%20Italy." target="_blank" rel="noopener">roughly</a> 1500 A.D. from the Americas.
The painting is described as a fresco by archeologists — a rapid watercolor mural painting technique. It’s located on the wall of a house that would have been next to a bakery before Pompeii was buried in ash in 79 A.D. According to Pompeii site director Gabriel Zuchtriegal, the depiction is a perfect example of the &#8220;luxury of silver trays” but also of a &#8220;frugal and simple meal,” <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-66031341" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the BBC.

Archeologists made the discovery while excavating the atrium of the house, which had previously been partially dug between 1888 and 1891, but they reopened their research into the location in January, the press release notes. While digging, archeologists also discovered the skeletons of three bodies near an oven.

“Pompeii never ceases to amaze; it is a chest that always reveals new treasures,” Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy’s minister of culture, said. “The global value of this site, which we are dedicating our attention to, needs to be underlined.”
According to Reader’s Digest, it’s <a href="https://www.rd.com/article/who-invented-pizza/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">believed</a> that modern pizza was invented in Italy sometime in the 1700s, though, depending on your definition of a pizza, it could date much further back than that. The outlet notes that Persians were baking flatbreads topped with cheese and dates, which parallels the description of the Pompeii “pizza” painting. 
Pompeii was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pompeii-home-of-slaves-turned-roman-elite-opens-after-20-year-restoration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">well-preserved</a> because of the thick volcanic ash that covered the city after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Roughly one-third of the city remains buried.
“The unexplored city covers an area of about 22 hectares of neighborhoods and houses that [are] still buried under the lapilli and ashes; this is nearly a 1/3 of the whole town,” the Pompeii news release states.

‘Pizza’ Painting Discovered At Pompeii, But Classic Ingredients Are Missing

Dutch archeologists have announced the discovery of an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/archaeology" target="_blank" rel="noopener">archeological</a> site that was a religious burial ground used as a solar calendar — a discovery that’s been dubbed the “Stonehenge of the Netherlands.”
Researchers announced the find this week after excavating the site between 2017 and 2018. The location, described as a &#8220;sanctuary,&#8221; includes a burial mound and ditches that allow the sun to shine through on the summer and winter solstices, similar to the famous Stonehenge in the United Kingdom. Roughly a million objects from the site and surrounding areas were excavated — some of which date to the Stone Age.

Archaeologists have found a 4,000-year-old religious sanctuary on an industrial site,” the municipality of Tiel, where the site was discovered, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/21/archaeologists-unearth-stonehenge-netherlands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> on its Facebook page. “This is the first time a site like this has been discovered in the Netherlands.”
The sanctuary was roughly <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/4000-year-old-archaeological-site-dubbed-stonehenge-netherlands-unearthed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">four</a> soccer fields long and built with wood and soil. There were multiple mounds, cemeteries, wooden posts, and a “ritual” road; the solar calendar was likely located on the largest mound, De Telegraaf, a Dutch newspaper, <a href="https://www.telegraaf.nl/nieuws/443844941/sporen-van-4000-jaar-oud-heiligdom-gevonden-in-tiel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The solar calendar would have been used to determine harvest days and important events. The site is also believed to have been used for rituals, as &#8220;rows of poles stood along pathways used for processions.&#8221; The large mound was likely an observation point, and it’s believed all three mounds were used for roughly 800 years.

“A person, for example a priest or priestess, stood on the hill, which was flat on top and on which probably stood a large pole. The priest then viewed the position of the sun from the fixed point of the pole. There were more posts around the hill as markers. They helped the priest determine the exact time of the year,” a <a href="https://www.theblaze.com/news/stonehenge-of-the-netherealnds-archaeologists-discovery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spokesman</a> told De Telegraf.
“On certain days the sun shone straight through those passages on the hill. Just like in Stonehenge, where the sun shines through the stones on important days,” the spokesman added.

The outlet notes that in the openings on the mount, where the sun shines through, archeologists discovered human skulls, animal remains, a spearhead, and other valuable items. Several graves at the site were also discovered, including one with a woman buried with the oldest bead ever found in the country. Researchers revealed the glass bead had come from Mesopotamia, in modern-day Iraq, indicating the people had contact with groups over 3,000 miles away, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/stonehenge-like-4000-year-old-sanctuary-discovered-netherlands-2023-06-21/#:~:text=AMSTERDAM%2C%20June%2021%20(Reuters),a%20similar%20purpose%20to%20Stonehenge." target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes</a>.
&#8220;Glass was not made here, so the bead must have been a spectacular item, as for people then it was an unknown material,&#8221; Stijn Arnoldussen, a professor at the University of Groningen, told The Guardian.
It took researchers six years to analyze all the artifacts discovered at the historic site. While some items date from the Stone Age, others hail from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman Empire, and Middle Ages, according to Reuters. Many of these items are expected to go on display for the public to see.

Archeologists have come across the ruins of an ancient Mayan city complete with buildings and pyramidal structures, the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) <a href="https://inah.gob.mx/boletines/descubren-antigua-ciudad-maya-campeche-la-nombran-ocomtun-columna-de-piedra" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> Tuesday. 
The city, which archeologists believe would have once been an important regional center, dates between roughly 250 to 1,000 A.D. Located in the thick jungle of the Balamkú ecological reserve in the Yucatan Peninsula in southern Mexico, the settlement was discovered by a team led by Slovenian archeologist Ivan Ṡprajc. 
&#8220;The biggest surprise turned out to be the site located on a &#8216;peninsula&#8217; of high ground, surrounded by extensive wetlands,&#8221; Ṡprajc said. &#8220;Its monumental nucleus covers more than 50 hectares and has various large buildings, including several pyramidal structures over 15 meters high.&#8221;
Archeologists discovered the buildings, stone columns, and even multiple 50-foot pyramids that make up the city in a largely unexplored section of the jungle. They named it Ocomtún, which is the Mayan word for “stone column,” because of the multiple scattered stone columns across the settlement, according to INAH.

The University of Houston conducted laser scanning (LiDAR) of the region in March, which located &#8220;numerous concentrations of pre-Hispanic structures.” From May to June, Ṡprajc and his team further studied and documented the site.
“The site served as an important center at the regional level, probably during the Classic period (250-1000 AD),” Ṡprajc said. “The most common ceramic types that we collected on the surface and in some test pits are from the Late Classic (600-800 AD); however, the analysis of samples of this material will offer us more reliable data on the sequences of occupation.”
According to the researchers, the columns were likely entrances to the upper rooms of buildings. The city is built around three main plazas with numerous “patio groups,” INAH says. Between two of the plazas, Ṡprajc explains, &#8220;There is a complex made up of various low and elongated structures, arranged almost in concentric circles.” The team even discovered what they believe to be a court for a ball game.

The northwestern part of the settlement is where the majority of the buildings and structures are located, and a “causeway” connects it to the southwestern portion of the city, according to the researchers. While most of the pyramids measure roughly 50 feet tall, one reaches 82 feet.

The archeologists believe the site likely collapsed between 800 and 1,000 A.D., based on analysis of the buildings and structures, which would be in line with the Mayan civilizational collapse in the southern lowlands, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-65974439" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the BBC.
Ṡprajc explains that analysis of the buildings and remains discovered &#8220;a reflection of ideological and population changes in times of crises that, finally, by the 10th century, led to the collapse of the complex sociopolitical organization and the drastic demographic decline in the Maya Central Lowlands.&#8221;

Researchers have revealed what the face of an Anglo-Saxon teenage girl who died more than 1,300 years ago looked like, according to a <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/stories/trumpington-cross-burial-facial-reconstruction-new-evidence-revealed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from the University of Cambridge. 
The 16-year-old girl was buried in Trumpington, England, in a bed burial, one of only 18 cases found in the United Kingdom. It’s believed that she was a member of the aristocracy or may even have a royal background, according to researchers. Using skull analysis, researchers have now revealed what she may have looked like. 
“It was interesting to see her face developing,” Hew Morrison, the forensic artist who worked on the reconstruction, said. “Her left eye was slightly lower, about half a centimeter, than her right eye. This would have been quite noticeable in life.”

Using skull measurements and tissue depth data for Caucasian females, Morrison was able to reconstruct her face, according to the university report. Morrison says without DNA analysis, he wasn’t sure of her hair and eye color, although the image is a “strong indication” of what she looked like before her death, the university notes. 
Archeologists discovered the burial a decade ago in Trumpington, located roughly 60 miles north of London, and dated the grave to the mid-7th Century. The girl was buried on a wooden bed with an “ornate” gold and garnet cross on her chest — believed to be one of only five crosses like that found in Britain. She also had a gold chain with two gold pins on her neck, which may have been connected to a veil of fine linen, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-65919518" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the BBC.  
The cross is known as the “Trumpington Cross,” and researchers say it signifies that she may have been of England’s earliest converts to Christianity. A similar cross was found in the coffin of St. Cuthbert, known as “northern England’s most popular saint,” Oxford Dictionary of Saints <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/17/memorial-to-st-cuthbert-restored-to-lindisfarne-after-nearly-500-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notes</a>. 
“She must have known that she was important and she had to carry that on her shoulders,” Dr. Sam Leggett, a bioarcheologist who worked on the analysis of the bones and teeth of the girl, said.

Through an isotopic analysis of her bones and teeth, researchers believe the girl moved from the Alps, possibly near southern Germany, to England after the age of seven, based on her diet. They noticed that the amount of protein she consumed decreased shortly before her death. Legget says that her diet would have been higher in meat and dairy in Germany, but her exact cause of death is still unknown. 
“She was probably quite unwell and she traveled a long way to somewhere completely unfamiliar – even the food was different,” Leggett said. “It must have been scary.”
The image of the girl will go on display Wednesday until April 2024 in an exhibit called “Beneath Our Feet: Archaeology of the Cambridge Region” at the University of Cambridge. The Trumpington Cross and the decorative headboard of the burial bed will also go on display, the BBC notes. 
&#8220;She&#8217;s a wonderful example of bringing the past to life,” Leggett told the outlet.

Researchers Reconstruct Face Of Anglo-Saxon Teenage Girl Buried With Rare Gold Cross

Archeologists in Peru announced on Wednesday that they <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/archaeologists-peru-find-3000-year-old-mummy-lima-2023-06-14/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">uncovered</a> a 3,000-year-old mummy that was offered as a human sacrifice.
The find, which comes following a string of similar discoveries in the country, was initially spotted by students from San Marcos University, a college in Peru’s capital, Lima. The students first discovered a cotton bundle containing the hair and skull of the person and later uncovered the remainder of the mummy. 
The mummy is a male and was found in the capital of Lima, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/archaeologists-peru-find-3000-year-old-mummy-lima-2023-06-14/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Reuters. Archeologist Michael Aguilar told the outlet experts believe it was from the Manchay culture, which lived in the Lima valleys between 1500 and 1000 BC. The Manchay culture is known for having built U-shaped temples on the central coast of Peru, according to a DePaul University Department of Anthropology <a href="https://dpuanthropology.wordpress.com/2017/10/12/at-the-mouth-of-madness-the-manchay-culture-and-the-initial-period-on-the-central-coast-of-peru/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>. 
The mummy &#8220;had been left or offered (as a sacrifice) during the last phase of the construction of this temple,&#8221; Aguilar told Reuters, adding that it was roughly 3,000 years old.

According to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-65915074" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a>, the archeologists were digging at the site of a landfill, having removed more than eight tons of trash prior to their search. The mummy had been laid out flat, which is in line with practices of the Manchay culture in the “formative area” of 3,000 years ago, Aguilar said, according to the outlet. It was <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-65915074" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrapped</a> in cloth made from vegetable fiber and cotton. 
In addition to the mummy, archeologists discovered seeds, corn, and coca leaves buried with the mummy. It’s probable that these items were part of the sacrifice. Coca, the raw material in cocaine, has a deep history in Peruvian culture, being used for thousands of years as parts of daily life and sacred rituals, <a href="https://daily.jstor.org/what-coca-means-in-peru/#:~:text=Coca%20has%20a%20long%20history,and%20celebration%20of%20life%20events.&amp;text=In%20the%20U.S.%2C%20we%20mostly,history%20aside%20from%20illicit%20drugs." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to JSTOR Daily. 
As for the U-shaped temples, the anthropology report notes that they would consist of three mounds in the shape of a U; a main pyramid and two side mounds, with one side being longer than the other. The larger side would have typically been connected to the main pyramid. Reuters notes that these temples would face toward the sunrise. 
A group of people who lived in today’s Peru and Chile — the Chinchorros — were the first group to practice mummification, thousands of years before the Egyptians, <a href="https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/mummies/peru#:~:text=Mummification%20was%20practiced%20by%20numerous,to%20their%20loved%20ones'%20graves." target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the American Museum of Natural History. It was common in Peru before the Spanish arrived and practiced by multiple cultures over 6,000 years ago, the museum notes.

The recent discovery follows a year of big archeological news in the Andean country. A month before that, a 26-year-old man was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/man-who-sleeps-with-girlfriend-mummy-arrested-gets-shocking-surprise-its-not-a-juanita-its-a-juan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">detained</a> after police said he had possession of a mummy in his delivery bag in Lima that he claimed was his “spiritual girlfriend.” In February, six mummified children were <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ancient-mummies-children-peru-sacrifice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discovered</a> in a tomb near Lima, thought to be roughly 1,000 to 1,200 years old.
