An <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal immigrant</a> was just charged in a shooting in Alabama as the country endures an unprecedented illegal immigration crisis.
Mexican national and illegal immigrant Alberto Martinez-Fidel was charged in the non-lethal shooting of a man in Montgomery, Alabama. Martinez-Fidel was charged with first-degree assault after allegedly repeatedly shooting a man with a handgun at close range, wounding him after striking the alleged victim in the back and buttocks. Martinez-Fidel’s bond was set at $30,000.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed in a statement that Martinez-Fidel is a Mexican national who is illegally present in the United States.
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations filed a detainer on Alberto Martinez-Fidel, 46, an unlawfully present Mexican national Aug. 5, 2024, after his arrest by the Montgomery Police Department. ICE does not have any previous immigration information on this individual,” ICE <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/border/2024/08/07/border-town-usa-mexican-national-charged-in-alabama-shooting-illegally-in-u-s-says-ice/">explained</a> in a statement.

The arrest of Martinez-Fidel comes as the United States has experienced a wave of illegal immigrant crime. Concerns about these crimes reached a fever pitch earlier this year after the tragic death of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student who was allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant named Jose Ibarra, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national.
There is also the case of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mother-of-12-year-old-alleged-murdered-by-venezuelan-illegal-aliens-speaks-out">Joceyln Nungaray</a>, a 12-year-old girl from Houston, Texas who was allegedly murdered by two illegal immigrants who entered the United States under the Biden-Harris administration.
A Honduran illegal immigrant was also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-charged-in-killing-of-new-orleans-woman">charged in connection to the murder</a> of Kristie Thibodeaux, a tour guide in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
One El Salvadoran <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-alien-ms-13-member-wanted-for-murder-arrested-in-south-carolina">illegal alien and MS-13 member</a> who was wanted for murder was recently arrested in South Carolina shortly after an illegal immigrant from Guatemala was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-alien-ms-13-member-wanted-for-murder-arrested-in-south-carolina">charged with sexual battery</a> after allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
The various arrests come as two other illegal immigrant murder suspects who were wanted by the international police were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-arrest-second-illegal-immigrant-murder-suspect-living-in-colony-ridge">recently apprehended</a> in Texas by the Splendora Police Department, which worked in conjunction with federal authorities. The two illegal immigrants both lived in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/colony-ridge">Colony Ridge</a>, a massive land development north of Houston that has become infamous for tailoring its financial and marketing practices to attract illegal immigrants.

A district court in Alabama has blocked the Biden administration’s guidelines that force schools that receive public funding to allow trans-identifying males into girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports.
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina asked for an emergency stay of the rules, which were set to go into effect on Thursday after previously being rejected. The stay was granted late Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, a federal judge had denied the states’ motion to block the new guidelines, CBS 42 <a href="https://www.cbs42.com/alabama-news/alabama-judge-allows-new-title-ix-rule-protecting-lgbtq-students-to-move-forward-in-4-states/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. However, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/florida-politics/2024/07/31/us-appeals-court-sides-with-florida-halts-title-ix-gender-identity-rule/">granted</a> the states’ appeal of the motion, and the case will move forward with an accelerated briefing schedule.
The Biden administration’s rules have now been blocked in 26 states. Oklahoma blocked the rules on Wednesday, just one day before they were to take effect.
On Wednesday, Judge Jodi Dishman, a Trump-nominated judge, <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.okwd.126841/gov.uscourts.okwd.126841.48.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> in favor of Oklahoma’s motion for a preliminary injunction against the federal guidelines. Dishman issued her ruling even after numerous blue states filed an amicus brief arguing against the injunction.
In addition to the rules being blocked in 26 states, dozens of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bidens-title-ix-rules-allowing-men-in-womens-sports-blocked-in-21-states-where-things-stand" target="_blank" rel="noopener">K-12 schools and universities</a> across the country have been blocked from implementing the rules.
Title IX is a federal statute that bans sex discrimination, but the Biden administration has expanded the definition to include sexual identity and gender identification. Courts across the country have determined that this expanded definition is wrong.
On June 13, U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty, a Trump appointee, issued <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-blocks-bidens-transgender-title-ix-rules-in-4-states" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a preliminary injunction</a> against the Biden rules, calling them an “abuse of power” and a “threat to democracy.” His ruling blocked the new guidance from taking effect in Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Montana.
“Title IX was written and intended to protect biological women from discrimination,” Doughty <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.lawd.205659/gov.uscourts.lawd.205659.53.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “Such purpose makes it difficult to sincerely argue that, at the time of enactment, ‘discrimination on the basis of sex’ included gender identity, sex stereotypes, sexual orientation, or sex characteristics. Enacting the changes in the Final Rule would subvert the original purpose of Title IX: protecting biological females from discrimination.”
On June 17, U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves, a George W. Bush appointee, issued <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/court-issues-preliminary-injunction-on-bidens-title-ix-rewrite-stops-it-in-6-states" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a preliminary injunction</a> blocking the rules in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. A few weeks later, on July 2, U.S. District Judge John Broomes, another Trump appointee, issued a similar ruling blocking the new Title IX rules in Alaska, Kansas, Utah, and Wyoming.
Broomes’ <a href="https://www.bloomberglaw.com/public/desktop/document/KansasStateofetalvUnitedStatesDepartmentofEducationetalDocketNo52?doc_id=X7VSH1UVO6B9K1AAI088P6TS9IF" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruling</a> went further, however,  and included <a href="https://www.scag.gov/media/pskl4phx/ks-v-u-s-dept-of-education-list-of-schools-enjoined.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a massive list</a> of K-12 schools and universities across the country where the rules would also be blocked. That list came from schools attended by children of the defendants in that lawsuit, Moms for Liberty, and members of the Young America’s Foundation.
On July 11, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, another Trump appointee, issued another ruling that blocked the Biden Title IX guidance in Texas, Newsweek <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/transgender-policy-texas-schools-donald-trump-kacsmaryk-title-ix-1924387" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time.
On July 24, U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel, a Clinton appointee, <a href="https://t.co/mdh7ZBIJAZ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blocked</a> the rules in Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
That brought the total number of states where the rules can’t be implemented to 21, and Oklahoma now brings the number to 22.
The Biden administration has argued to at least implement the Title IX guidance that doesn’t include transgender capitulations – such as the provisions regarding reduced due process protections – in the states that have blocked the rules so far, The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/lgbtq/4787089-doj-asks-supreme-court-restore-title-ix/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
In the rulings against the regulations, however, judges have noted that because of the Biden administration’s redefinition of the word “sex” to include gender identity, transgender issues can’t be carved out from the rules as a whole.
“[T]he fact that the definition permeates the entire Rule, the Court concludes that it would be a nearly impossible task to excise the remaining regulations without also eliminating those regulations that involve sex discrimination,” Judge Sippel wrote in his ruling. Other judges wrote similar statements.

The federal government engaged in a stunning deception by secretly shaping a medical association’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender" target="_blank" rel="noopener">transgender policy</a> for political aims — then arguing in court that red states were not allowed to diverge from that policy, because it would be putting politics over scientific expertise.
The findings could deal a crippling blow to the Biden administration’s efforts to stop Republican-led states from banning the genital mutilation of children, and prove embarrassing for the judges &#8212; including an appointee of Donald Trump &#8212; who appeared to accept the argument that medical associations are above politics and should be deferred to by red-state politicians.
The Biden administration sued states including Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky, with transgender guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) as its key piece of evidence. But the documents obtained via discovery in an Alabama lawsuit show that, in fact, the WPATH guidance was crafted in close collaboration with the Biden administration specifically with an eye to influence such lawsuits and block legislation.
Rachel Levine, a transgender Biden political appointee in the Department of Health and Human Services, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admins-rachel-levine-met-with-wpath-as-he-pushed-for-removal-of-trans-surgery-age-restrictions?topStoryPosition=3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pressured WPATH</a> not to recommend that gender surgeries be limited to a specific age, fearing that spelling out the age &#8212; which would be low &#8212; would make it easy for citizens to object to them as radical and lead to a backlash.
“She liked the SOC-8 very much but she was very concerned that having ages (mainly for surgery) will affect access to health care for trans youth and maybe adults too. Apparently the situation In the USA is terrible and she and the Biden administration worried that having ages in the document will make matters worse. She asked us to remove them,” a WPATH email said.
WPATH complied, with officials noting that they were still suggesting surgeries for minors, just making it more difficult to get a “headline” out of it by obscuring it.
Some in WPATH chafed at letting politics govern a medical document, with one noting that it was a “global document” that should not be contorted for one country’s politics and saying, “I am a little surprised that we would be asked to do this after all the care and endless discussion by experts to reach this consensus on ages for surgeries.”

“I’m concerned about the headline: SOC 8 changes at last minute at request of USA official,” one wrote. Another said: “It is frustrating to have to have politics in our brains as we make these decisions. But it is what it is!”
After Tennessee state lawmakers voted to ban the gender conversion of minors, private individuals sued the state in federal court, and the Biden administration intervened, taking their side. The <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.tnmd.94244/gov.uscourts.tnmd.94244.41.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">administration argued</a> that “Standards of care for treating transgender youth diagnosed with gender dysphoria have been published by several well-established medical organizations, including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health” and, “The standards of care published by these organizations provide a framework that is based on the best available science and clinical experience.” Of 60 footnotes, eight cite directly to WPATH.
Judge Eli Richardson, a Trump appointee hearing the case in the Middle District of Tennessee, relied on WPATH’s SOC to <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.tnmd.94244/gov.uscourts.tnmd.94244.167.0.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">block enforcement of the law</a>, saying that the state only has a compelling interest in banning something if it is harmful, and WPATH says transgender procedures are safe.
“WPATH is the leading association of medical and mental health professionals in the treatment of transgender individuals. … The guidelines are based on scientific research and clinical experience,” he wrote. “The Court thus evaluates Defendants’ evidence in light of the prevailing standards of care and conclusions contained in the WPATH and Endocrine Society guidelines.”
Tennessee argued that children may regret not being able to procreate as a result of their gender surgeries, but Richardson relied on WPATH, writing, “Indeed, the WPATH guidelines explain that &#8216;there is evidence that fertility is still possible for individuals taking estrogen and testosterone&#8230;&#8217; The Court is therefore not convinced that possible negative impacts on fertility warrant an outright ban on procedures used to treat gender dysphoria in minors.”
He noted that he is not the only judge who has made law based on the SOC, saying, “The Court finds further support for its reliance on information contained in the guidelines in the fact that several courts in cases similar to this have relied on these guidelines.”
Tennessee lawmakers similarly explained, as an example of harms averted by a ban, that people undergoing gender surgery are often unable to have sexual function, but Richardson said that the WPATH guidelines say that “gender affirming care can help [transgender individuals] improve their sexual function and increase their sexual pleasure and satisfaction.” (Richardson might have been embarrassed to know that in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leaked-files-from-transgender-medical-org-show-medical-malpractice" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leaked documents</a>, WPATH President Marci Bowers said she had never seen a single boy whose puberty was blocked achieve orgasm as a transgender woman.)
Richardson’s ruling was ultimately overturned by an appeals court. But the Supreme Court has agreed to take up the Tennessee case, a move that the DOJ is attempting to use to stall a similar ban in Alabama, where a lawsuit resulted in the unearthing of the WPATH documents.
Stanley Goldfarb, a longtime professor of medicine and chairman of <a href="https://donoharmmedicine.org/content-author/dr-stanley-goldfarb/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Do No Harm</a>, a group that opposes injecting leftist politics into medicine, told The Daily Wire, “It is shameful and wrong that Levine and allies manufactured the outcome they needed to corner politicians into endorsing dangerous and experimental medical treatments for children” and “used the power of the federal government to bully WPATH into disguising bad politics as independent, evidence-based science.”
Attorneys general in the conservative states argued that WPATH standards were based on flimsy science. The emails obtained in discovery in the Alabama case showed that WPATH members themselves agreed.
One reason some members were willing to give into Levine’s demands to remove recommended ages for surgery was because, they acknowledged, there was little medical evidence supporting WPATH’s recommendations in the first place. “I’m concerned about the headline: SOC 8 changes at last minute at request of USA official. The one reason I might be ok changing is we don’t have exact data/studies in recommending the ages,” one WPATH member said. “I do wonder how they will be defended in court cases, but it should be done.”
Jon Arcelus Alonso, the co-chair of the SOC initiative, chided WPATH President Marci Bowers for internally acknowledging that the group’s recommendations were often based on scant scientific evidence. Instead, Bowers said they were based on the “consensus” of members. “In the last few days I have heard from Marci that the ages don’t have any scientific backup. Our guidelines are not only evidence based but they are primarily consensus based. There are many recommendations in the SOC that don’t have direct evidence,” he wrote.
He urged WPATH to confidently profess to be the embodiment of medical science regardless. “We need to believe that we are the experts and we know what we are saying and no being shaken by others,” he added.
Another WPATH member dismissed the need for scientific precision, writing, “My hope with these SoC is that they land in such a way as to have serious effect in the law and policy settings that have affected us so much recently; even if the wording isn&#8217;t quite correct for people who have the background you and I have.”
Meanwhile, Loren Schechter, an expert witness in some of the lawsuits who was involved in WPATH, advocated for removing language in which the group characterized how strong the scientific evidence was for each of its statements.
“I am concerned about language such as ‘insufficient evidence,’ ‘limited data,’ etc… I say this from the perspective of current legal challenges in the US. Groups in the US are trying to claim that gender-affirming interventions are experimental and should only be performed under research protocols (this is based on two recent federal cases in which I am an expert witness). In addition, these groups already assert that research in this field is low quality (ie small series, retrospective, no controls, etc&#8230;). My specific concern is that this type of language (insufficient evidence, limited data, etc&#8230;) will empower these groups,” she wrote.

Biden Admin Influenced Transgender Medical Guidance, Then Cited It In Court As Science That Couldn’t Be Questioned By Red States

The fight to keep sexually explicit books away from children is not just being fought in big liberal cities.
Even in deep red Alabama, there is resistance to removing books such as the sexually explicit LGBT-themed book “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” in which there are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/its-time-to-unite-against-the-real-enemy">graphic descriptions</a> of anal rape and incest. It&#8217;s the book that Louisiana Senator John Kennedy read aloud during a Senate committee hearing last year, shocking all in attendance.  The book <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/concern-raised-over-sexually-explicit-book-in-olathekansas-seventh-grade-classroom/">graphically describes</a> sexual activities and includes lines like, &#8220;He didn’t know I was a virgin, and I did my best to act dominant like my favorite porn star,&#8221; and, &#8220;He reached his hand down and pulled out my d**k. He quickly went to giving me head.&#8221;
But just last month, an effort from concerned residents in one small Alabama community asking for the book to be moved to the adult section of their local library was denied. Under current guidelines, parents can complain about a book, but a committee appointed by the library director decides the fate of the book. The committee in charge of reviewing &#8220;All Boys Aren&#8217;t Blue&#8221; in Huntsville-Madison County unanimously ruled that it should stay in the library’s young adult section. 
Cindy Hewitt, the executive director of the Huntsville-Madison Library, told one concerned resident on May 28 that the committee found that though the content in the book is “frank and open” it is “relevant to the author’s history,” according to a letter obtained by The Daily Wire. According to Hewitt, the committee found that it would be a “disservice to remove it from the collection as it would neglect to consider the real-world issues of sex and sexual abuse that some teenagers may already be experiencing.” 
A new policy set to go into effect next month, however, could create a new calculus for local libraries. After July 15, funding for state libraries will be tied to removing sexually explicit and graphic books from the children’s sections of public libraries.
Under the new rules, libraries will be required to come up with a “selection criteria for minors and how they are safeguarded from sexually explicit or other material deemed inappropriate for children or youth.”
The policies also stipulate that libraries will need to have provisions in place to move books that have been deemed sexually explicit or inappropriate for children. The amended rules say that libraries shall “approve written guidelines that ensure library sections designated for minors under the age of 18 remain free of material containing obscenity, sexually explicit or other material deemed inappropriate for children or youth.”
Another rule would create guidelines for library cards handed out to minors, including that parents need to give approval and that the cards can’t be used to check out books from the adult section of the library. This would give parents, like the ones attempting to have &#8220;All Boys Aren&#8217;t Blue&#8221; moved from the young adult shelves of the Huntsville-Madison County Library, a new avenue to have their complaints addressed.
John Wahl, the chair of the Alabama Republican Party and a member of the Alabama Public Library System, told The Daily Wire that he fully expects the policies to go into place.
”Once these go into effect on July 15, Alabama will have some of the strongest regulations in the country to make sure children are protected,” Wahl told The Daily Wire. “It is time that we protect children from social engineering and from materials that really are not appropriate for them.” 
He added that parents had come before the APLS board to tell them about sexually explicit books their kids had found at local libraries. He said that the people of Alabama “want the libraries to be cleaned up” and that taxpayer dollars should not go to purchase explicit books aimed at children.

Media and leftist activists have attempted to portray the pending rule as a &#8220;book ban,&#8221; but backers say its a misrepresentation.
“No one is about banning books. We’re not trying to ban anything. We are trying to definitely protect children though,” APLS board member Amy Minton told The Daily Wire. “Why do we have these books in our public libraries that encourage the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity when it&#8217;s against the current law of Alabama?”
She added that the vast majority of public comments sent in related to the policies were in support. 
According to Elizabeth Stewart, an organizer with the conservative group Moms for Liberty and resident of Athens, Alabama, a large part of the push for children’s books with graphic material is coming from the American Library Association, which wants to expose children to “various forms of sexual activity.”
The American Library Association is run by a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/marxist-lesbian-president-of-american-library-association-doubles-down-on-agenda-for-a-better-world">self-described</a> “lesbian Marxist” and has vigorously protested any effort to shield children from graphic materials while pushing leftist ideology. 
”Everytime we make a choice to put something in, we are simultaneously making a choice to not put something in,” Stewart said. “And so it does make a difference — there’s not an endless space in each library to put everything which is why age appropriate curriculum material selection policy has to be written well.”

Library boards will play an important part in developing policies that will be in accordance with the new APLS guidelines.
Stewart told The Daily Wire that it is important for local citizens to take responsibility for their own communities. That’s why she’s been pushing for clarity on the makeup of her own Athens-Limestone County Public Library board, which has been embroiled in controversy the last several months over its policies on sexually-themed books and board appointments. 
The controversy began when longtime librarian and mother Carissa Callan was alarmed by a posted policy that said the library was supposed to supply books on sex “that reflect changing attitudes and departures from traditional mores.” As a resident of Limestone County, Callan applied for a spot on the board, as the library&#8217;s publicly posted policies said three board appointments were given to the city and two to the county.
After being denied an application on the board, Callan and Stewart discovered that the library board was completely controlled by the city, contradicting posted policy. The city makes up just about 26% of Limestone’s population of around 110,000. The library’s total expected revenue for fiscal year 2024 came to around $628,600. This funding came from multiple sources, including the county and the state, totaling around $224,244, according to records viewed by The Daily Wire. 
Stewart said that county citizens were effectively getting taxed twice for something they did not have a voice on. 
“The county citizens are getting hit twice. They’re paying their local county commission for no representations,” Stewart told The Daily Wire. “The state of Alabama has been funding this library for 15 years under documentation and legal bylaws stating that it has remained a joint library effort and a joint board.” 
The city of Athens told The Daily Wire that the incorrect information about the board appointment on the website appeared to be the result of “human error,” and that it had been removed from the website “weeks ago.” 
The library’s <a href="https://www.alcpl.org/using-the-library/library-policies/">current page</a> on policies says it is “under construction,” and current policies on board membership cannot be found online. However, the library’s updated policies from this May are available upon request from the library, and were obtained by The Daily Wire. 
That policy no longer contains the requirement for books &#8220;that reflect changing attitudes and departures from traditional mores,&#8221; but now stipulates that the library board is all appointed by the city. Limestone residents still have questions about why the county provides funding without getting to make any board appointments. 
The Limestone County Commission <a href="https://www.enewscourier.com/news/commission-approves-update-to-library-board/article_8ebaca96-2297-11ef-82e9-df2c6fe9f708.html">voted</a> last week to approve a resolution that expresses a goal of forming a joint-library board again with at least two county representatives. The resolution would require an agreement to be reached by October 1. The exact details appear to still be up in the air and county residents remain unconvinced that the board will be changed. 
A spokeswoman for Athens said that the “city and the county are exploring modifications so that the board contains appointments from both the city and county,” adding that “when/if those changes are made, the library policy will also be changed.”
None of the members of the Limestone County Commission responded to Daily Wire requests for comment. 
Limestone residents also believe that there should be an independent review of the board regardless of whether the county is given any seats on the board or not. Wahl agrees, saying that there should be an independent review from outside to ensure that a fair resolution is found. 
Stewart said that there needs to be a legitimate board in place in Athens before they can develop a policy on sexually explicit books in accordance with the APLS. Regardless, the Athens-Limestone Library will need to submit its policy by October if the new guidelines take effect in July.

The newly crowned National American Miss, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/beauty-pageant">Miss Alabama</a> is facing backlash online for what critics are saying is the promotion of unhealthy lifestyles.
Sara Milliken, 23, was named the winner of the National American Miss pageant competition over Memorial Day weekend and has since gone viral online. The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alabama">Alabama</a> native auditioned twice previously and did not place, then won the crown in 2024. 
“No matter what your body looks like, no matter where you come from, you can do anything you set your mind to,” she told <a href="https://www.wkrg.com/mobile-county/cyberbullying-after-viral-facebook-post-spurs-outpouring-of-support-for-alabama-pageant-queen-explanation-of-comment-moderation/">WKRG</a> in an interview about the win.
The contestant said she expected negativity because of her <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/obesity">weight</a>. “Even something that you type over a screen can have a lasting impression on people,” she told the outlet. “Even though I&#8217;m not at that point, it can lead people to do some very dark things to themselves,” the beauty pageant winner added.
Many of the negative comments focused on how Milliken’s win glorified obesity, noting how this was not meant to be a personal attack.
“Calling her beautiful is fine and good that’s all in the eye of the beholder,” one Facebook commenter wrote. “But let’s be honest with ourselves&#8230; she’s extremely unhealthy and this is a slap in the face to the young girls who have worked hard and maintained a diet to actually be a beauty queen.”
“This is an embarrassment to the state of Alabama,” the social media user added.

The newly crowned Miss Alabama responded to the negative comments with a lengthy Instagram <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C7sDg0hvhmn/">post</a>.
“Recently I have been the target of an overwhelming amount of online hate, negativity, and bullying. Honestly, it doesn’t affect me in the way most would think it does. A lot of people see me stepping into this title as wanting to be ‘in the spotlight’ and because of that their words are justified. The truth is I wanted this title so desperately to serve my community,” Milliken wrote.
“More than anything I just wish people could find something more interesting to do or something more interesting to talk about,” she continued. 
“The things that has been said about me is truly disgusting and I cannot fathom how people think it’s ok to say these things. The easy thing would be to give up. I could hide my face. Stop posting on social media. Make no appearances. Stay low key until Nationals. I could even give in and give up my title. But instead I say WATCH ME.”
Besides controversy over the Miss Alabama crowning, pageant fans are also questioning the state winner in the Miss USA competition. Bailey Anne Kennedy, a biological male who identifies as trans, became the first “trans woman” to be named <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/newly-crowned-miss-maryland-usa-is-a-man" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Miss Maryland</a>. Auburn University student Diane Westhoven was <a href="https://www.al.com/life/2024/06/miss-alabama-usa-2024-miss-southern-plains-wins-the-crown.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">crowned</a> Miss Alabama USA last weekend. 
Kennedy and Westhoven will next head to Los Angeles to compete for Miss USA. The competition is scheduled to air on Sunday, August 4 on The CW.

At least nine states have filed lawsuits against the Biden administration over its new Title IX rules forcing public schools to allow trans-identifying males to compete in women’s sports and use women’s bathrooms.
Earlier this month, the Education Department unveiled new Title IX regulations to prohibit schools from enforcing blanket bans on trans-identifying males in girls’ sports set to take effect in August.
Title IX is the 1972 federal civil rights law prohibiting sex-based discrimination at schools receiving federal funding.
As of Monday, Montana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Idaho, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina have all filed lawsuits over the administration&#8217;s interpretation of the civil rights law.

Likewise, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/TitleIxLawsuit.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">teamed</a> up to file a joint suit. Texas <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-sues-biden-administration-unlawfully-using-title-ix-mandate-radical#:~:text=“Texas%20will%20not%20allow%20Joe,undemocratic%2C%20and%20divorced%20from%20reality." target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed</a> its own lawsuit.
“For 50 years Title IX has protected girls and women’s rights, but President Biden has abandoned those protections to appease the woke left,” Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen <a href="https://dojmt.gov/attorney-general-knudsen-leads-coalition-against-biden-administrations-attack-on-womens-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
“This rule is not based in scientific reality. It redefines biological sex which will allow men to compete in women’s sports, violate women’s privacy, and put women and girls in dangerous situations on campus. I will continue to fight to protect women and uphold Montana’s laws against federal overreach,” the attorney general added.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused the administration of attempting to twist the federal law’s meaning to align with “radical gender ideology.”
“Texas will not allow Joe Biden to rewrite Title IX at whim, destroying legal protections for women in furtherance of his radical obsession with gender ideology,” Paxton <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-sues-biden-administration-unlawfully-using-title-ix-mandate-radical#:~:text=%E2%80%9CTexas%20will%20not%20allow%20Joe,undemocratic%2C%20and%20divorced%20from%20reality." target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in a statement Monday. “This attempt to subvert federal law is plainly illegal, undemocratic, and divorced from reality. Texas will always take the lead to oppose Biden’s extremist, destructive policies that put women at risk.”
The Biden administration’s new regulations will apply to all public K-12 schools, colleges, and universities that receive federal funding.
The <a href="https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/fact-sheet-us-department-educations-proposed-change-its-title-ix-regulations-students-eligibility-athletic-teams">new rules</a> state that schools that receive federal funding may not ban biological males in girls’ sports wholesale, but they may exclude them on a case-by-case basis.
“Sex-related criteria” at schools that would limit or ban a trans-identified student from playing on the team of their preferred gender must meet two standards. First, the criteria must be related to an “important educational objective,” and second, the criteria must also “minimize harms” to the trans-identified student.

Preventing sports-related injuries would be an example of an “important educational objective,” the department noted.
High school girls have been injured playing with trans-identifying males. Last year in North Carolina, a female high school volleyball player <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/female-high-school-volleyball-athlete-suffers-serious-head-injury-after-transgender-player-throws-abnormally-fast-ball/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suffered</a> severe trauma to her head and neck after a trans-identifying male player spiked a volleyball that hit her head.
Another example of an “important educational objective” would be “fairness in competition.”
Female athletes at high schools and colleges in several states have spoken out against competing against biological males.
The updated rules <a href="https://apnews.com/article/title-ix-transgender-bathroom-bans-645b5564ce227a9efe2c05f883609ae8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">may conflict</a> with laws in several states restricting trans-identifying students from playing on girls’ teams or using girls’ facilities.

A man who was arrested over the detonation of an explosive device in February outside the office of Alabama Republican Attorney General Steve Marshall advocated for leftist political causes, according to the Department of Justice. 
A 36-year-old man, who investigators <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/721860762/Kyle-Calvert">say</a> indicated support for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and anti-police sentiment, was <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-mdal/pr/irondale-alabama-man-charged-detonating-explosive-device-outside-alabama-attorney" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> on Wednesday of placing the explosive device outside of Marshall’s office early on the morning of February 24. 
The explosion took place at the intersection of Washington Avenue and South Bainbridge Street in Montgomery and followed reports of a suspicious package being at the scene. There were no injuries from the explosion.
The suspect, who is reportedly from Irondale, was charged by the DOJ with malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered explosive device. According to court documents, the same person who placed the explosive device outside of Marshall’s office additionally had placed a variety of “suspicious” stickers on government buildings near the attorney’s general office. 
Surveillance footage showed the suspect, wearing a hat, mask, and goggles, placing stickers on the Alabama state capitol building before walking toward Marshall’s office in the early morning hours of February 24. “The stickers placed on State buildings depicted different graphics, advocating for various political ideologies. Some included the phrase ‘Support your local antifa,’” a memo from the DOJ arguing for detainment of the suspect says.  
The memo contains a picture of nails that were included in the explosive device which was made with &#8220;a gasoline or lighter fluid substance, a mortar, firecrackers and nails. &#8230; The action of placing and initiating the IED on the walkway beside a government building demonstrates that this device was used as a weapon against property and/or to cause injury/death,” the memo says.

Stickers placed on the government buildings included the following far-Left messages in all caps: “Anti-fascism is community self-defense,” “abolish private property,” “topple all hierarchies,” “feminist action,” “eat the rich,” “death to fascism,” “support your local antifa,” “arm the homeless,” “my body my choice,” “F*** work let’s riot,” “friends don’t let friends become cops,” and “abolish ICE.”
Many of the stickers incorporated symbols of anarchy and guns into the messages and words, according to the court memo. Another video reviewed by investigators showed the suspect discussing his “violent impulses,” while another showed him saying “how the f*** are we not killing the government right now?”

During the investigation, authorities used surveillance footage and social media videos to trace the car seen leaving the scene of the bombing as well as the clothes that were worn and stickers that were used. The suspect could face 20 years in prison if convicted. 
“My staff and I are breathing a collective sigh of relief this morning knowing that this individual has been taken off the streets,” Marshall <a href="https://www.wbrc.com/2024/04/10/irondale-man-indicted-terrorism-charge-detonating-explosive-ags-office/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement after the charges were announced. “Although more information will be provided in the weeks to come, I think it is safe to say that this was not a random act of violence.”

Pro-life activists have long believed that fetuses are deserving of human rights because of the scientific belief that human life begins at conception. Contrary to what some may think, this goal is not out of reach. States are <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/personhood-bills-ivf-restrictions-alabama-rcna140228" target="_blank" rel="noopener">working</a> to enshrine fetal rights into law, recognizing fetuses as human beings who should be given the same rights as people who have already been born. 
As of March 15, 23 pieces of legislation had been introduced in 13 states that would create fetal personhood and outlaw abortion, according to the pro-abortion <a href="https://www.guttmacher.org/state-legislation-tracker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Guttmacher</a> Institute. With fetal personhood as the end goal for many in the pro-life movement, how these laws would impact the fertility treatment of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is now a main point of discussion. 
A recent decision by the Alabama Supreme Court essentially <a href="https://publicportal-api.alappeals.gov/courts/68f021c4-6a44-4735-9a76-5360b2e8af13/cms/case/343D203A-B13D-463A-8176-C46E3AE4F695/docketentrydocuments/E3D95592-3CBE-4384-AFA6-063D4595AA1D" target="_blank" rel="noopener">states</a> that embryos must be considered children under the letter of the law. It ruled that embryos fall under the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act, which creates a way for parents to receive punitive damages over the death of a child. It found that embryos qualify as “unborn children” and stated that the Act “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.” The decision called into question whether or not the IVF industry will be able to continue its treatments under pro-life legislation. The pro-life movement and the practice of IVF can co-exist, but their bond would be stronger if the procedures surrounding IVF were altered because of new laws protecting unborn life.
Although fetal rights will inevitably have a major impact on the IVF industry, this does not mean that supporters of IVF should shy away from such rights being enshrined into law. Many pro-life advocates, as well as conservative Christians, view IVF as an essential means to starting a family. A Facebook group <a href="https://www.facebook.com/search/groups/?q=christian%20ivf%20support&amp;sde=Abo6mQGTwumSH8ghiQqAvvjPX7NFviMO4wSBhxr6grIQwUayjg5k0ye5FNdIS2HCiLkkJOB-TfP5YV29lVJ9zt3H" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> “Christian IVF Support” has 2,000 members and conservative women have begun to speak out in favor of IVF practices. 
Hannah Nelson, a Christian mother who received IVF treatment in order to give birth to her son, responded to a post by conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey in late February. “There is an ethical and Christian way to do IVF,” she wrote, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2024/03/01/ivf-embryos-alabama-ruling-conservative-women/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to The Washington Post. “I am curious why you’re against that means of creating a family.”
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, told me about natural cycle IVF, a <a href="https://www.shadygrovefertility.com/article/stimulated-ivf-vs-natural-cycle-ivf/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">process</a> that <a href="https://lomalindafertility.com/is-natural-cycle-ivf-your-best-option/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">takes</a> one egg at a time from a woman during her menstrual cycle. The egg is <a href="https://www.ohioreproductivemedicine.com/2018/02/21/natural-ivf-and-mini-ivf/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fertilized</a> outside of the body, and <a href="https://www.wsj.com/health/did-i-need-to-make-extra-embryos-to-have-a-baby-a6b0c584?st=l0ewceljhfags4n&amp;reflink=article_imessage_share" target="_blank" rel="noopener">transferred</a> back into the woman, similar to traditional IVF, but without the use of drugs or multiple embryos. 
“There is natural cycle IVF which I believe only extracts a limited number of eggs and implants every embryo into the mother,” Hawkins explained over text. “I think many who are pro-life would be okay with [natural cycle IVF] as you aren’t ‘screening out’ humans or freezing them.”
There is also the process of “Minimal Stimulation IVF,” or “Mini IVF,” which <a href="https://fertilitynj.com/ivf/mini-ivf/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">incorporates</a> less medication to produce fewer eggs, resulting in fewer embryos. This could be another option for people who have concerns over the vast number of unused embryos that are frozen through the traditional IVF process, possibly to never be implanted and given a chance.

Without <a href="https://www.theregreview.org/2022/08/13/saturday-seminar-the-regulation-of-assisted-reproduction/">cohesive</a><a href="https://www.theregreview.org/2021/08/10/verniero-wild-west-fertility-clinics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> regulation</a>, the IVF industry as a business is not pro-life. One doesn’t have to look far to find pro-life parents who have gone through the IVF process and were forced to seek alternative clinics or received pushback when they wanted to implant all of their embryos.
The IVF industry does not promote pro-life practices in part due to clinics’ desires to have high success rates and make money. The procedure of in-vitro fertilization, however, can be completed in a way that gives value to the lives of unborn children. Laws that protect the unborn at all stages of life — whether in utero or prior to being implanted — will change the IVF industry for the better.
Legislators in the United States need only glance across the pond for a model on how to better protect human life created through fertility treatments. European countries have stricter laws on IVF and other fertility procedures. According to fertility treatment <a href="https://ivi-fertility.com/blog/regulations-legislation-assisted-reproduction-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">group</a> IVI, as of January 2022, 20 of the states in the European Union <a href="https://ivi-fertility.com/blog/regulations-legislation-assisted-reproduction-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">permit</a> donation of sperm and only 17 allow egg donation. The process of freezing one’s eggs or sperm is allowed in all countries in Europe if it is done because of medical reasons that could negatively impact a person’s ability to have children. In many other countries, however, it is not allowed for social reasons. The only states that permit &#8220;fertility preservation” for social purposes include Germany, Spain, Switzerland, as well as the United Kingdom. 
Even the United Kingdom, which <a href="https://www.fertilityclinicsabroad.com/ivf-abroad/ivf-united-kingdom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allows</a> access to IVF, has restrictions. The law does <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/health/5360625/danielle-lloyd-gender-selection-legal-uk-early-foetus-identification/#:~:text=The%20only%20way%20you%20can,a%20technique%20which%20does%20this." target="_blank" rel="noopener">not</a> permit parents to pick which embryo they would prefer based on the child’s sex unless it is for a medical reason. In the United States, this is widely <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/04/fertility-clinics-advertise-gender-selection-ethical-wuandary.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accepted</a>, even though several states ban sex selection for abortion, even when some of them <a href="https://www.abortionfinder.org/abortion-guides-by-state/abortion-in-kansas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allow</a> the <a href="https://www.abortionfinder.org/abortion-guides-by-state/abortion-in-north-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">procedure</a>. According to the Guttmacher Institute, as of August 2023, eleven states <a href="https://www.guttmacher.org/state-policy/explore/abortion-bans-cases-sex-or-race-selection-or-genetic-anomaly" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prohibit</a> abortion because of the sex of the baby.
No one conceived through fertility treatments — or parents who utilized these procedures — should be judged or ostracized. As Kristan Hawkins pointed out in our conversation, “those who were conceived via IVF are valuable persons who we are glad are here.”
The pro-life movement does not need to exist apart from IVF, but it can and should positively influence laws surrounding fertility treatments so that humans at all stages of life are given the rights they deserve.

Republican Alabama Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kay-ivey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kay Ivey</a> signed a law this week that bans state funding of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-dei" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diversity, equity, and inclusion</a> programs at state agencies and public universities and requires those institutions to have sex specific bathrooms.
Ivey signed the measure, SB129, on Wednesday after it easily passed both the state House and Senate. The legislation comes as DEI programs at institutions across the country have come under scrutiny for focusing on identity as opposed to merit. 
“My Administration has and will continue to value Alabama’s rich diversity, however, I refuse to allow a few bad actors on college campuses – or wherever else for that matter – to go under the acronym of DEI, using taxpayer funds, to push their liberal political movement counter to what the majority of Alabamians believe,” Ivey <a href="https://www.al.com/news/2024/03/alabama-gov-kay-ivey-signs-dei-bill-into-law-what-the-divisive-concepts-ban-will-do.html?utm_campaign=aldotcom_sf&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement. 
“We have already taken action to prevent this in our K-12 classrooms, and I am pleased to sign SB129 to protect our college campuses,” she added. “Supporting academic freedom, embracing diversity of cultures and backgrounds and treating people fairly are all key components of what we believe in Alabama, and I am more than confident that will continue.”
The <a href="https://www.legislature.state.al.us/pdf/SearchableInstruments/2024RS/SB129-enr.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">law</a> will “prohibit certain public entities from maintaining diversity, equity, and inclusion offices and from sponsoring diversity, equity, and inclusion programs,” prohibit the “promotion, endorsement, and affirmation of certain divisive concepts in certain public settings,” and ensure that male and females have separate bathrooms at public institutions. 
One of the divisive concepts included the belief that someone can be inherently racist or responsible for slavery because of the color of their skin. This concept has been widely promoted throughout the education system as students have been taught that all white people are racist or inherently an oppressor.

Other divisive concepts banned include teaching the concept of white guilt and promoting the idea that it is racist to believe in meritocracy and hard work. 
The measure was widely opposed by Democrats and liberal groups who claimed that it would be used to stop history teachers from talking about slavery and related topics. The legislation’s supporters said that the bill would not prevent anyone from teaching accurate history or discussing negative aspects of Alabama’s past. 
States like Florida and Texas have already enacted similar legislation and Republican lawmakers in Congress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-bill-would-eliminate-federal-funding-to-any-med-school-that-incorporates-dei" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have pushed</a> to pull federal funding from medical schools that incorporate DEI into their admissions or instruction.

An <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alabama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alabama</a> woman who admitted that she lied about being kidnapped last year was sentenced by a judge this week to probation and to pay restitution.
Carlee Russell, 26, was charged last summer with two misdemeanors — falsely reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident — and was subsequently found guilty of both counts.
Russell had told law enforcement officials that she had been kidnapped after she went missing for two days. She later <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/carlee-russell-admits-her-entire-kidnapping-story-was-a-hoax" target="_blank" rel="noopener">admitted</a> to making up the entire incident.
Hoover Municipal Judge Brad Bishop recommended last fall that Russell pay $18,000 in restitution and spend a year in prison.
Russell&#8217;s team appealed the ruling in an attempt to get her out of having to spend time in jail, ABC News reported. Their effort was successful as Russell was sentenced to pay $17,974.88 restitution to the city of Hoover and 12 months of supervised probation, community service, and evidence of continued mental health counseling, the report added.
The Alabama Attorney General&#8217;s Office said that they were &#8220;disappointed, but not surprised&#8221; that Russell avoided going to jail, but noted that changes would soon be happening in the state that would prevent someone from getting off the hook in the future.
&#8220;Current law provides a weak penalty for false reporting and fails to account for situations, like Ms. Russell&#8217;s, that result in a significant law enforcement response,&#8221; said Katherine Robertson, chief counsel for the Alabama attorney general. &#8220;Fortunately, the Governor will soon receive our legislation to increase penalties for false reporting when an imminent threat is alleged and will expand the amount of restitution that can be sought. The next time law enforcement resources are needlessly wasted in this manner, the offender will be forever labeled a felon.&#8221;
Russell attorney Emory Anthony acknowledged in a statement last year that his client had lied about the entire incident.
“There was no kidnapping on Thursday July 13,” the statement said. “My client did not see a baby on the side on the road.”

As voters head to the polls on Tuesday to choose their preference in the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries, many Americans will also vote in important down-ballot races.
Super Tuesday primary elections will be <a href="https://www.npr.org/live-updates/super-tuesday-2024-states-results" target="_blank" rel="noopener">held</a> in 16 states and one U.S. territory as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump move closer to their respective parties’ nominations. Other races in multiple states will likely have major implications for the battle over control of Congress.
Here are some down-ballot races to keep an eye on as the results start pouring in on Tuesday evening:
<h3>California Senate Primary</h3>
Numerous Democrats and Republicans are running for the seat of the late Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sen-dianne-feinstein-dies-at-90" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dianne Feinstein</a> (D-CA), who died in September. Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, Barbara Lee, and former MLB player Steve Garvey, a Republican, are expected to be in a tight race for the top two spots.
California holds a nonpartisan primary election for the Senate, in which the two candidates with the most votes — regardless of party affiliation — will move on to face each other head-to-head in the general election in November. Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-CA), a labor leader and activist whom Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom appointed to fill the Senate seat following Feinstein’s death, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2023-10-19/laphonza-butler-senate-race-2024-schiff-porter-lee-feinstein-garvey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in October that she would not run to hold onto the seat.
According to <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/2024/california/top-two-primary/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FiveThirtyEight’s average</a> of polls on the Senate primary in California, Schiff leads the pack at 25.5%, with Garvey coming in second at 20.4% and Porter in third at 18.4%. Lee remains farther behind in the polls, coming in at 9.1%.
<h3>Texas Democratic Senate Primary</h3>
Democrats in Texas will head to the polls on Tuesday to choose their nominee to run against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for the seat the conservative senator has held since 2013. Rep. Colin Allred (D-TX), a former NFL player who has been serving in Congress since 2019, and Democratic state Sen. Roland Gutierrez are the favorites in a crowded field to win the party’s nomination.
Democrats have put a lot of attention on Texas in Cruz’s past two re-election campaigns, hoping to steal a Senate seat in the red state. In 2018, Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/elections/results/texas-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lost</a> to Cruz by more than 200,000 votes. No Democrat has won an election for statewide office in Texas in 30 years, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-senate-race-2024-allred-cruz-a0a1b4a21feb99593d72cf4a2cf7f7aa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>.

Allred has outraised his Democratic opponents in the race, raking in more than $21 million during his campaign for the Senate, the AP reported. Gutierrez, meanwhile, has criticized Allred for joining 14 other Democrats in backing a GOP-led resolution condemning Biden for his handling of the border crisis.
The <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/2024/texas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most recent polls</a> on the Democratic primary in Texas show Allred leading Gutierrez by double digits, with one poll showing the former Tennessee Titans player ahead by 38 points. If one candidate doesn’t get a majority of votes in the primary, the top two candidates will head to a runoff election on May 28.
<h3>Texas GOP House Primary</h3>
Another Texas race, this one for a U.S. House seat, could be a close contest as 11 Republicans look to move on to the general election. Brandon Gill, the son-in-law of conservative documentary filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, is endorsed by both Trump and Cruz. He is <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2024/02/14/texas-congressional-district-26-2024-republican-primary-brandon-gill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">considered</a> the frontrunner in the race with John Huffman, the mayor of Southlake, Texas, being his most prominent challenger.
The Republican candidates are looking to win the seat of outgoing Rep. Michael Burgess, who announced in November that he would retire at the end of his current term. A candidate must get more than 50% of the vote to win the primary. The top two candidates will move on to a runoff in May if no candidate reaches the majority threshold.
<h3>Alabama GOP House Primary</h3>
A primary in the red state of Alabama is pitting two incumbent Republicans against each other after the state redistricted. Reps. Jerry Carl and Barry Moore, both second-term congressmen, must now fight for the 1st District seat.
Moore is backed by House Freedom Action, a group tied to the conservative House Freedom Caucus, of which Moore is a member. Since Alabama’s 1st District is safely Republican, the winner of Tuesday’s primary is expected to win the general election in November easily. A recent <a href="https://www.aum.edu/aum-poll-examines-gop-primary-race-for-alabamas-first-congressional-district/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poll</a> from the University of Auburn Montgomery shows Carl leading Moore 43% to 35%.
<h3>North Carolina Gubernatorial Primaries</h3>
Both Republicans and Democrats will vote for a nominee in the North Carolina gubernatorial primaries on Tuesday. Democratic Governor Roy Cooper is term-limited after this year, serving in the governor’s mansion since 2017.
On the GOP side, Trump-endorsed candidate Mark Robinson, who is currently the state’s lieutenant governor, is facing two other Republican candidates, Bill Graham and Dale Folwell. For Democrats, state Attorney General Josh Stein is widely expected to win the party’s primary as he looks to fend off four challengers.
The general election for North Carolina governor is expected to be competitive and expensive. According to <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/2024/north-carolina/general/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">polling</a>, Robinson and Stein are neck-and-neck in a potential general election matchup.

Republican leaders in Congress announced on Thursday that Sen. The speech, expected to air following Biden&#8217;s remarks to a joint session of Congress on March 7, gives Britt the opportunity to raise her profile within the party and help set the tone for the presidential election year. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) emphasized how Britt&#8217;s age, 42, makes for a stark contrast to 81-year-old Biden.
