ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit and his golden retriever, Peter, recently headlined a Business Council of Alabama fundraising dinner benefiting its GOP-aligned political action committee, which reportedly donated $155,000 to Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) gubernatorial campaign the following day.

The October 21 event was promoted as a business gathering featuring Herbstreit’s insights on leadership and success. The official announcement also disclosed that contributions would support Progress PAC, the council’s political action committee. Sponsorships reportedly ran up to $50,000, and “big-ticket donors” joined a roundtable with the ESPN star.

The council thanked its “featured speaker” and “featured retriever” on X the next day.

Awful Announcing, citing David Covucci’s FOIAball newsletter, reported that Progress PAC has donated $2.6 million to Republican candidates in Alabama since 2024. It gave $260,000 to Democrats during the same period; however, most ran unopposed.

The outlet suggested Herbstreit’s appearance contradicts his comments last month that he doesn’t closely follow politics. The remarks followed criticism of ESPN’s College GameDay interview with Sen. Ted Cruz about college sports legislation. The network was blasted for not giving equal time to an opposing viewpoint.

Herbstreit did not take part in the discussion with Cruz. He has described himself as politically independent, saying, “I don’t really get into politics,” and, “So whoever helps us as a country, I’m for. Whether that’s somebody on the left, somebody on the right.”
