Yale University administrators have replaced “freshman” and “upperclassman” with the terms “first year” and “upper-level students” in official campus publications, Yale Daily News (YDN) reported on Friday.
The terminology shift, YDN claims, comes from calls for “greater gender inclusivity.”
“We’re not trying to be language police,” said Yale’s dean Marvin Chun, describing the new terminology as “modern.”
“It’s really for public, formal correspondence and formal publications … we’re not trying to tell people what language to use in their everyday casual conversations,” said Chun.
The new terminology will be reflected in Yale’s undergraduate handbook of regulations.
Yale has a permanent “Committee on Racial and Ethnic Harassment,” as well as a rotating consultant dedicated to addressing “complaints relating to harassment on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, race, or ethnic origin.”
Similar “gender-neutral” pursuits have occurred at various colleges and universities, including Vanderbilt University’s adoption of nonsense pronouns such as “ze,” “zir,” “zirs,” “hir,” and “hirs,” through its “Faculty Senate Gender Inclusivity Task Force.”
Estimated costs for Yale’s undergraduate tuition and fees is $51,400 per year. Total costs for undergraduate students living on campus are estimated as $70,570.
