Hollywood celebrities, who know as much about the byzantine world of politics and the letter of the law as they do about nuclear physics, are using the opportunity of the President Trump/James Comey political tornado to weigh in with advice for Congress and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein: create an independent commission and appoint a special prosecutor to investigate possible collusion between Russia and President Trump’s presidential campaign.
In a letter to Rosenstein, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Alec Baldwin, Zoe Saldana, Julianne Moore, Sally Field, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Moore, Patti Lupone, Lee Daniels, Paul Haggis, Dustin Lance Black, Melissa Etheridge, Jane Fonda, Josh Gad, Chris Evans and Marisa Tomei expressed their highly-informed opinion that Congress should appoint a special prosecutor, writing:
The founders of our nation intended to ensure that no one branch of government could supersede the authority of the others and that no individual, not even the president, would be above the law … Today, we fear the bedrock principles of our democracy are being put to the test in ways unlike any others in our nation’s history. Donald Trump’s’s actions over the past week have put our country on a path toward a constitutional crisis.
The letter was also signed by the major signatories of the leftist movement, including the American Civil Liberties Union, EMILY’s List, People for the American Way and MoveOn.org.
The letter continues, “It is the unanimous opinion of out nation’s top intelligence agencies that Russian actors interfered with the presidential election … Getting to the bottom of this interference can not and should not be a partisan matter.” The letter concludes, “We ask that you put country before party to ensure that the integrity and well-being of our nation and its people remain your top priority, as they should.”
Hollywood celebrities (combined IQ: negligible) have issued their opinion. We can all rest easy now.
