Speaking on ABC’s “The View” on Monday, co-host Whoopi Goldberg blasted the new darling of the Left, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for “pooping” on other Democrats and icily said Ocasio-Cortez should “sit still” and “learn the job” first.
According to Mediate, Goldberg’s comments were prompted by a discussion of Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks during a “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper. Mediate reported, “Anderson Cooper asked Ocasio-Cortez about her previous intentions to support Democratic primary candidates to unseat incumbent Democrats, which the 60 Minutes correspondent and CNN host noted as ‘politically dangerous tactics.’ Ocasio-Cortez replied, ‘It’s absolutely risky. It requires risk to try something new, but also we-we know so much of what we’ve tried in the past hasn’t worked, either.’”
Goldberg’s remarks started like this:
Listen, let me just say this about Ocasio-Cortez: She just got in on Thursday; she was sworn in, and she is very opinionated, which we like. We like opinionated women. But it is very, very difficult when people make accusations where you say, you know, the Democrats have done nothing, the establishment of the Democrats have done nothing. And I just want to throw this out to you. (Rep.) John Lewis (D-GA) wasn’t sitting still. [Sen.] Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) wasn’t sittin’ still. There are a whole bunch of people in the Democratic Party who have been busting their a**** to make sure that women get what they need; people get what they need; children get what they need. So you just got in there and I know you got lots of good ideas, but I would encourage you to sit still for a minute and learn the job. And just, you know, there are people in that party who have been working their tails off for this country —
Co-host Joy Behar interrupted, “And they know a lot.”
Goldberg echoed, “And they know a lot and you could learn some stuff from that. And I just feel like, you don’t have to be born into it. You don’t have to know it when you step out, but before you start pooping on people and what they’ve done, you got to do something too.” She added, “You can’t poop on what was when you’re coming in on the shoulders of quite a few giants.”
After Ocasio-Cortez was elected to Congress, she stated her intention to support Democratic candidates challenging Democrat incumbents, saying, “Long story short, I need you to run for office. All Americans know money in politics is a huge problem, but unfortunately the way that we fix it is by demanding that our incumbents give it up or by running fierce campaigns ourselves. That’s really what we need to do to save this country. That’s just what it is.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, who co-founded the group Justice Democrats, which supported Ocasio-Cortez in her bid to oust incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, added, “We need new leaders, period. We gotta primary folks.”
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “If you’re a strong progressive leader in your community and committed to getting money out of politics, I want you to join me in Congress. I want you to run.”
