It wasn’t just John Lennon who was responsible for the worst song in pop music history; lump in Yoko Ono, too.
The National Music Publishers Association is acknowledging Yoko Ono will share credit for John Lennon’s 1971 peace anthem Imagine.
Sean Ono Lennon, the couple’s son, posted his excitement on Instagram:
Proudest day of my life: The National Music Publishers Association just gave the centennial (song of the century) award to Imagine, but WAIT! Surprise! They played an audio interview of my father saying (approximately) ‘Imagine should’ve been credited as a Lennon/Ono song, if it had been anyone other than my wife I would’ve given them credit.’ Cut to: my mother welling up in tears, and then Patti and Jesse Smith @michiganmanhattan Imagine! Patience is a virtue! (PS they officially declared Imagine to be a Lennon/Ono song and gave my mother a second award!)
Imagine is not only execrable musically, as it uses the most basic chords imaginable; it has possibly the most overtly Communist, anti-God lyric ever written. First, rejecting God:
Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Then a tribute to hedonism:
Imagine all the people living for today
The classic leftist line that all cultures and countries are equivalent:
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Oh, that’s right, Godless people like Nazis and Communists never kill people:
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
And the stirring conclusion:
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Wait! We almost forgot an attack on private property:
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need…
Here’s something to imagine; a world that has no unicorns and lollipops raining from the sky.
Reality: it’s all we’ve got.
