On Wednesday, a female news anchor in Denver found that when the chips are down, especially if they’re hot, they don’t stay down long.
Sitting with her all-male colleagues on KWGN’s Daybreak, anchor Natalie Tysdal attempted to join them in the “one chip challenge,” which entailed eating a Paqui Chip, touted as the world’s hottest chip and made with the Carolina Reaper pepper.
The website of the makers of the chip shows people preparing for the challenge with milk or ice cream.
As they unwrapped the chips, Tysdal said, “It says Carolina Reaper Pepper. That’s what kind of pepper it is?” Another host chimed in, “But we were promised milk.” Tysdal: “At least there’s some sea salt.” One host, admonishing Tysdal, who had taken a small bite and taken a selfie, “It’s not a tiny bite challenge, it’s a one chip challenge.” Another host, to Tysdal, “C’mon, eat the rest of the chip already.”
Tysdal started, “Can you lick your fin – ohh …” but then the effect of the chip hit her. Grabbing her coffee and slugging it down, she then disappeared behind the desk to start vomiting.
On Facebook, Tysdal wrote of her experience:
So, what really happened on TV this morning with the “one chip challenge?” I thought I was okay until I had a drink of my coffee to wash down the chip. I threw up, couldn’t breathe and felt like fire was coming out of my mouth, nose and ears. I had a bottle of water, a glass of milk, a tablespoon of honey and 3 mints and still felt on fire. An hour later I had chills and a massive headache. Three hours have gone by and I feel like I was beat up in a dark alley. Oh, and did I mention I shared the chip with my producer Scott Elliott? CRAZY! I wouldn’t recommend it.
