In her opening statement at Thursday’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki supported “gender-affirming health care” regarding children who have been deemed “transgender” kids, intoning, “To be clear, every major medical association agrees that gender-affirming health care for transgender kids is a best practice and potentially lifesaving.”

Psaki began by, of course, targeting Republicans, claiming that the treatment doled out to children deemed “transgender” was “medically necessary” and “lifesaving,” as she stated, “Republican lawmakers are currently debating legislation that, among many things, would target trans youth with tactics that threatens to put pediatricians in prison if they provide medically necessary, lifesaving healthcare for the kids they serve.”

She referred to legislation in Alabama that requires public school students to use restrooms and locker rooms agreeing with the sex shown on their birth certificates and also would ban classroom instruction or discussion on sexual orientation or gender identity for children in grades K-5, snapping, “Just like the extreme government overreach we’ve seen in Texas, where politicians have sent state officials into the homes of loving parents to investigate them for abuse — just to harass and intimidate the LGBTQI+ community — today’s vote in Alabama will only serve to harm kids.”

She threatened, “But Alabama’s lawmakers and other legislators who are contemplating these discriminatory bills have been put on notice by the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services that laws and policies preventing care that health care professionals recommend for transgender minors may violate the Constitution and federal law.”

Then she claimed, “To be clear, every major medical association agrees that gender-affirming health care for transgender kids is a best practice and potentially lifesaving.”

What does “gender-affirming” care include?

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) states that gender-affirming care includes puberty suppression and hormone therapy, writing, “Gender-affirming care, including puberty suppression and hormone therapy, is potentially lifesaving.”

Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry enthuses, “Although less frequent than other forms of gendering-affirming care, medical procedures, such as chest surgery, may be performed on older adolescents who have shown a consistent and persistent gender identity, are stable with respect to their mental health, and have parental support.”

The Williams Institute at UCLA’s School of Law writes, “Gender-affirming care, including the use of hormones to delay puberty and to promote the development of secondary sex characteristics that are consistent with a child’s gender identity, is recommended for transgender youth by the American Academy of Pediatricians and the Endocrine Society and is viewed by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA) as evidence-based patient care.”
