After President Trump attacked him on Twitter, London Mayor Sadiq Khan seemed to huffily suggest canceling the city’s plans to hold a state visit ceremony for Trump when he visits Great Britain as president for the first time.
Speaking to Channel 4 News on Monday, Khan was asked what Trump’s “got against [him]” in reference to these tweets from the American president:
Khan’s office had responded, “He has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks urging Londoners not to be alarmed when they saw more police — including armed officers — on the streets …The Mayor is busy working with the police, emergency services and the government to co-ordinate the response to this horrific and cowardly terrorist attack and provide leadership and reassurance to Londoners and visitors to our city.”
Khan said on Monday, “Since Saturday I’ve been working with the police, with emergency services, with the government and others to deal with the horrific attack on Saturday. I just haven’t got the time to respond to tweets from Donald trump.”
Asked if Trump’s state visit to the U.K. should be canceled, Khan answered, “My position remains the same: I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the President of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for. I think one of the things, when you have a special relationship, it’s no different than when you’ve got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity, but you call them out when they’re wrong. And there are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.”
