Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) revealed in an emotional speech on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with high-risk prostate cancer.
“God works in mysterious ways; when you are an elected official, missed votes require an explanation,” Brooks said. “That is why I disclose this otherwise very personal, very private and very humbling matter.”
Brooks said his doctor notified him of the diagnosis on Halloween night. Brooks went on to say that losing the Alabama GOP Senate nomination might have saved his life because if he had won he might not have gone to the doctor for tests.
“Had I won, I would not have had time for my physical and PSA test,” Brooks continued. “I would not have had a prostate biopsy. I would not now know about my high-risk prostate cancer that requires immediate surgery. In retrospect, and paradoxically, losing the Senate race may have saved my life. Yes, God does work in mysterious ways.”
Brooks said that he is scheduled to undergo surgery next week and will miss and floor votes as a result.
