A hilarious April Fool’s joke from 2014 targeting a college professor is going viral again.
Dr. Stephen Barrows, who was an associate professor of economics, was pranked by Aquinas College students who pulled off a hilarious April Fools’ Day prank. Barrows had implemented a policy whereby students who received phone calls in class would have to put them on speaker.
“At first we started thinking of just really ridiculous ideas, but then we remembered the cell phone policy: ‘If your cell phone rang in class, you had to answer it on speakerphone,” Bailey Terebinski, a Aquinas College senior, told FOX17.
Female student Taylor Nefcy’s phone rang.
“Professor Barrows is a good guy and he probably wasn’t going to force her to put it on speakerphone if we didn’t kind of egg her on. So we said, ‘Answer it, answer it!’ and you can hear that in the beginning of the video,” said Aquinas College junior Josh Weiland.
The exchange went like this:
Nefcy: Uh, hello.
Voice from phone: Hello, is this Ms. Nefcy?
Nefcy: Yes?
Voice: Hi. This is Kevin from the Pregnancy Resource Center. Per your request, I’m calling to inform you that the test results have come back positive. Congratulations!
Barrows: Okay, Okay, you might want to, um, shut that down.
Nefcy, apparently flustered: Okay, thank you.
Voice: There is no need to worry. I know you told us the father is no longer in the picture, but we will be in contact with you throughout the whole process. So don’t worry about anything. We provide counseling and other maternity services at no charge.
Nefcy: Thank you. I’ll call back later. Thank you.
Barrows: Hey, I want to publicly apologize –
Nefcy: That’s, that’s okay, I’ve –
Barrows: I’m very sorry.
Nefcy: I’ve been expecting this and I already know what I’m going to name the baby. The first name will be April and the middle name will be Fools.
Utter hilarity in class as Barrows shielded his face with a sheaf of papers. He finally managed, “Honest, honest to God. That was awesome. I was petrified.”
Barrows told FOX17 later the first thing he thought was, “Why isn’t she taking this off speakerphone?” Then he realized he had to publicly apologize. He admitted, “No woman should have to publicly reveal her pregnancy unless she’s doing it purposefully. So I just thought, ‘Oh, I am so sorry that this happened to her this way.” He changed the policy.
