Protestors hit the streets of Ferguson, Missouri on Tuesday in honor of the two-year anniversary of Mike Brown’s death, but it seems they still didn’t get the memo that walking into oncoming traffic is a dangerous practice no matter how justified you feel.
The video of the incident (below), captured by a fellow protestor’s cellphone, shows the moment a man left the shoulder of the road, walked out into the middle of the street, and was hit by a car who refused to recognize him as a stop light.
“Shots were fired moments later as screaming witnesses surrounded the man and others chased the vehicle into the McDonald’s parking lot,” reads the video’s description. “Protesters dived behind parked cars, but it’s unclear if anyone was wounded by the gunfire…..The bullets — at least 20 rounds — erupted within 30 seconds of the collision at around 9:15 p.m. along W. Florissant Ave., a strip where rioters razed businesses during a spate of anti-police brutality demonstrations in 2014.”
City of Ferguson Public Relations Coordinator, Jeff Small said the driver did not intentionally hit the Black Lives Matter activist.
“By all accounts, her version of what happened seems to fit the version of what happened to a person driving down a busy West Florissant Avenue and not seeing a person standing there,” said Small.
Witnesses claim the shooter was part of the protest and was specifically targeting the female driver’s tires as the mob chased her down.
Ferguson Freedom Fighters organizer Larry Miller told the Daily News, “A young lady pulled out a gun and tried shooting out her tires. They were chasing the car, she was driving to get away because she didn’t know it was a dead end in the McDonald’s parking lot.”
Steve Giegerich of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweeted that there were no gunshot injuries, but three of the protestors, including the one hit by the car were taken to the hospital.
