Jaguars don't understand borders, but where the United States meets Mexico, they are having to adapt to them. Once the master of the plains of the Sonoran Desert, the animal is now struggling to survive in a landscape cut in two by a wall The barrier, which former US President Donald Trump boasted he would make "impenetrable" does little to discourage the thousands of people from Latin America, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe who arrive every day. But, say conservationists, it is deadly to wildlife. (Photo by VALERIE MACON / AFP)

U.S. Border Patrol agents reportedly came under fire this week while working on the southern border from gunmen operating inside Mexico.

Fox News correspondent Griff Jenkins said that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the Wednesday incident to the network.

The shots fired at Border Patrol agents from the Mexican side happened in the Ysleta area of the El Paso Sector, Jenkins posted on X. The incident, which did not yield any casualties, happened in the afternoon.

Federal law enforcement officials launched an investigation into the matter and described the incident as a “use of force” incident, meaning that Border Patrol agents returned fire.

“On May 8, 2024, Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Paso Sector were involved in a use of force incident while responding to reports of shots fired near the border in the Ysleta Station area of responsibility in Texas,” the statement said. “There are no reported injuries at this time. The incident is under review by Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility.”

The FBI released a separate statement on Friday confirming that they are involved in investigating the shooting and are collecting evidence at the crime scene.

“FBI El Paso was notified of the May 8th shooting that occurred by the Ysleta USBP Station – Lopez Gate,” the FBI said. “The FBI El Paso Violent Crime Task Force and the FBI Evidence Recovery Team were deployed to collect evidence at the crime scene. The FBI El Paso’s Violent Crime Task Force is working closely with the U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility on this assault on a federal officer investigation. As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details may be given at this time.”

The incident comes as the southern border has experienced catastrophic levels of illegal immigration because of President Joe Biden’s policies and reversal of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

In addition to more than 8 million illegal aliens coming into the U.S. under Biden, a number greater than the population of most U.S. states, numerous suspects on the FBI’s terrorist watchlist have also entered the country.
