A union representing nearly 20,000 Border Patrol agents on Monday declared its support for President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;big, beautiful bill,&#8221; hailing the legislation as an “investment” in America’s border security.
“The men and women of the National Border Patrol Council are proud to announce our support for the House One Big Beautiful Bill,” the group&#8217;s president, Paul Perez, told The Daily Wire. “This legislation provides a once in a generation investment in the border security of our great country and will make America safer.”
The legislation not only modifies the tax code, but also provides funding that would allow Customs and Border Protection to expand its operations.
“This legislation provides for thousands of new patrol vehicles, the hiring of thousands of additional Border Patrol Agents, and improves retention and recruitment by using incentives and protecting benefits, along with unprecedented investments in physical infrastructure, such as roads along our borders,” Perez added. “The NBPC has no doubt this legislation will greatly help us to do our jobs more safely and effectively.”
Funding for physical infrastructure, the Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee say, would <a href="https://homeland.house.gov/2025/04/27/house-homeland-security-committee-releases-text-for-budget-reconciliation-recommendations/">support</a> the construction of “701 miles of primary wall, construction of 900 miles of river barriers, 629 miles of secondary barriers, and replacement of 141 miles of vehicle and pedestrian barriers.”
The White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/05/one-big-beautiful-bill-is-a-once-in-a-generation-chance/">adds</a> that the funding will support “at least one million annual removals” of illegal aliens and the hiring of 10,000 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel.
The House Judiciary Committee <a href="https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/big-beautiful-border-security">says</a> the funding would allow ICE to expand its capacity and allow it to detain 100,000 illegal aliens at any given time.
Beyond funding Border Patrol, ICE, and border wall construction, the legislation also takes other steps to discourage illegal immigration. If passed, the bill would impose a 5% tax on money sent out of the country by illegal aliens and non-citizens.
Experts told The Daily Wire that the tax on such transactions would <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/a-new-tax-on-money-sent-abroad-could-dry-up-drug-cartel-cash-and-penalize-illegal-immigration?author=Spencer+Lindquist&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=4&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=This+New+Tax+Could+Stop+Illegal+Immigration+And+Keep+Money+From+Cartels">penalize</a> illegal immigration and cut into the cash flows that are sent to the Mexican drug cartels.
“Placing a fee on remittances is crucial because the more money that is smuggled back into Mexico, the stronger the cartels become,” Ira Mehlman, the Media Director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, told The Daily Wire.
Trump’s bill would also kick an estimated 1.4 million illegal aliens off of Medicaid, the government-funded healthcare program. The legislation, the Trump White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/05/one-big-beautiful-bill-is-a-once-in-a-generation-chance/">says</a>, “eliminates waste, fraud, and abuse by ending benefits” for illegal aliens “who are gaming the system.”

The United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) has taken over Washington, D.C., office space that once served as headquarters for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
“CBP has signed a license agreement to occupy approximately 390,000 usable square feet in the USAID tower,” a CBP spokesman told <a href="https://www.politico.com/playbook" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Politico</a>.
The agreement comes after the Trump administration has gutted USAID in its previous form to restrict its funding priorities and move it under direct oversight by the State Department and its head, Marco Rubio.
The move also reflects a change in vision and priorities for the new administration, which has taken a more critical approach to foreign aid while focusing much more on the immigration crisis that gripped the country during the previous administration. Earlier this week, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/stephen-miller-pledges-full-might-of-dhs-doj-dod-to-be-used-in-mass-deportation-effort" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reiterated</a> the administration’s commitment to border security and mass deporting illegal aliens.
“I can promise you that the full might of the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Department of Defense, and every element and instrument of national power will be used to remove with speed all criminal illegals from the soil of the United States of America, to enforce final removal orders, and to ensure that this country is for American citizens and those that legally belong in this country,” Miller said during a White House press briefing.

In its first weeks in office, the Trump administration has deported roughly 11,000 illegal aliens while creating space at places such as the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to hold more deportees as the administration works to return aliens to their countries of origin.
Meanwhile, illegal entries into the United States through the southern border have plummeted since Trump was elected.
“According to newly released data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), just 61,465 illegal aliens were apprehended at the southern border during the entire month of January — a 36% decline from the previous month. Illegal border crossing at the southern border of the United States “plummeted” in January, falling precipitously as President Donald Trump returned to office in what the White House is calling &#8220;the Trump Effect.&#8221;
Apprehensions of illegal border crossings into the United States dropped 36 percent last month, falling to 61,465, new data from Customs and Border Patrol indicates. The figure, which includes 29,116 apprehensions on the border and another 32,349 at ports of entry, is the lowest since May 2020, when the COVID response virtually shut down the southern border as new restrictions had been implemented.
The rate dropped particularly rapidly after Trump assumed office on January 20, the White House pointed out in a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/02/illegal-border-crossings-plummeted-in-january/">press release</a> on Tuesday.
“From Jan. 21 through Jan. 31, the number of U.S. Border Patrol apprehensions along the southwest border dropped 85% from the same period in 2024, according to data obtained by ABC News. In the 11 days after Jan. 20, migrants apprehended at ports of entry declined by 93%.”
The data marks a stark contrast with the Biden administration, which had an average of 141,710 in the month of January, with the Trump administration calling those crossings “the result of dangerous policies that ferried illegal aliens directly into our communities, where they were allowed to stay indefinitely.”
The drop in illegal border crossings comes as the Trump administration has taken a range of different actions to disincentivize illegal immigration, most notably by enforcing federal immigration law within the interior of the country and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ice-arrests-11000-illegal-aliens-in-first-18-days-of-trump-administration">deporting</a> illegal aliens.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dont-even-think-about-it-kristi-noem-issues-harsh-warning-to-illegal-immigrants-coming-to-u-s?topStoryPosition=undefined">announced</a> that the federal agency would launch “a nationwide and international multimillion-dollar ad campaign warning illegal aliens to leave our country NOW or face deportation with the inability to return to the US.”

Trump announced his impending executive order at a signing event for the Laken Riley Act, an immigration security bill named after a 22 year-old victim of an illegal alien murderer. The Guantanamo Bay detention facility, located in Cuba, has historically been used to detain terror suspects. Shortly after taking office, Trump signed an executive order designating cartels as Foreign Terror Organizations.
“Today, I’m also signing an Executive Order to instruct the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to begin preparing the 30,000 person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay … to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people.”
“Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them,” he said of criminal illegal aliens. “We don’t want them coming back so we’re going to send them out to Guantanamo. This is going to double our capacity immediately.”
“I hereby direct the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to take all appropriate actions to expand the Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to full capacity to provide additional detention space for high-priority criminal aliens unlawfully present in the United States, and to address attendant immigration enforcement needs identified by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security,” Trump’s executive order reads. 
It goes on to add that the memo “is issued in order to halt the border invasion, dismantle criminal cartels, and restore national sovereignty.”
Trump’s comments came at an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmxgNgNrhf4">event</a> at which the President signed the Laken Riley Act, an immigration bill named after the 22 year-old Georgia nursing student who was brutally murdered by an illegal alien from Venezuela last year while she was out for a morning jog.
The legislation will require the detention of illegal aliens charged with theft or violent crimes. The bill received bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress. “She’s going to save a lot of lives, she’s going to be responsible for saving a lot of lives,” Trump said to the parents of Riley at the event. He also accused the previous administration of opening America’s borders and allowing “world’s most dangerous criminals straight into” American communities.
Under the Trump administration, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has set out to capture and repatriate illegal aliens, with a special focus on illegal aliens convicted of other crimes in addition to illegally crossing the border into the United States.

An illegal alien in Vermont allegedly murdered a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a traffic stop on Monday.
&#8220;Today, January 20, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the US Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector was fatally shot in the line of duty,&#8221; said Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman.
Huffman added, &#8220;This incident is being swiftly investigated and DHS will release additional information as soon as it becomes available.&#8221;
NewsNation&#8217;s Ali Bradley reported that the Border Patrol agent was &#8220;shot in the neck by an illegal immigrant who sources say was a &#8216;visa overstay.'&#8221;
&#8220;Sources say the agent was conducting a traffic stop when he was shot,&#8221; Bradley wrote on X. &#8220;The shooter is also dead. A woman was injured in the altercation, her status and condition are not known at this time.&#8221;
Bradley said that Border Patrol officials believe that some criminal illegal aliens will try to flee the U.S. now that President Donald Trump is back in office.

The new president is also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-to-declare-immigration-national-emergency-deploy-troops-to-border">expected</a> to end birthright citizenship for illegal aliens, suspend refugee resettlement, resume building the wall, and designate cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, White House officials explained.
The officials noted that he will reinstate the Remain in Mexico policy, which orders migrants to remain in the country while asylum claims are processed, also telling reporters that the president will work to end the current asylum system altogether.
The House of Representatives will also focus on immigration in the first days of the Trump administration. The Biden-Harris administration’s Department of Homeland Security freed an illegal alien who was wanted of child rape in his home country into the United States.
The illegal alien, a 25-year-old Ecuadorean national named Adrian Patricio Huerta-Nivelo, crossed the border into the United States on June 4th, 2021 before being <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ero-boston-removes-international-fugitive-wanted-questioning-ecuadoran-child-rape">apprehended</a> by Border Patrol.
Huerta-Nivelo was given a notice to appear in front of an immigration judge before being released into the interior of the United States. Just days after his release, however, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) discovered that the illegal alien was wanted in Ecuador in connection to the rape of a child.
ICE arrested Huerta-Nivelo days after he was released into the United States on June 12th, 2021 in Boston, Massachusetts. The federal law enforcement agency held the illegal alien in their custody until an immigration judge ordered him to be deported from the country. He was then returned to Ecuador and handed over to law enforcement agents in his home country.
Though Huerta-Nivelo is not believed to have committed any violent crimes during his brief time in the United States, numerous other illegal aliens have committed violent crimes after illegally crossing the border.

Trump has now tapped Tom Homan as his new “border czar.” Tom Homan is, of course, the former acting ICE chief. In a social media post late on Sunday, Trump made his <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113462412414821782" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcement</a>:
<blockquote>I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders (“The Border Czar”), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security. I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long awaited for, job.</blockquote>
Homan is somebody who really stands up for the principles of a closed border and for legal immigration. In October during an <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-mass-deportation-plan-cost-consequences-60-minutes-transcript/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview with 60 Minutes’</a> Cecilia Vega, Homan clarified his positioning on deportation:

Homan: I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s accurate or not.
Vega: Is that what American taxpayers should expect?
Homan: What price do you put on national security? Is it worth it?

Homan: Of course there is. Families can be deported together.</blockquote>
Trump is serious about deporting a large number of people, and Homan is the most serious person to act as “border czar.”

Ocasio-Cortez: But it says here that you—you gave her numerous options, but the recommendation was option three, family separation.
Homan: What I’m saying, this is not the only paper where we had given the Secretary numerous options to secure the border and save lives.
Ocasio-Cortez: And so the recommendation — of the many that you recommended — you recommended family separation.
Homan: I recommended zero tolerance.
Ocasio-Cortez: Which includes family separation.
Homan: The same as it is with every U.S. citizen parent that gets arrested when they’re with a child.
Ocasio-Cortez: Zero tolerance was interpreted as the policy that separated children from their parents?
Homan: If I get arrested for DUI and I have a young child in the car, I’m going to be separated. When I was a police officer in New York and I arrested a father for domestic violence, I separated that father from—
Ocasio-Cortez: Mr. Homan, with all due respect, legal asylees are not charged with any crime.
Homan: When you’re in the country illegally, it’s a violation of eight United States Code 1325.
Ocasio-Cortez: Seeking asylum is legal.
Homan: If you want to seek asylum, go through the port of entry, do it the legal way. The Attorney General of the United States has made that clear.</blockquote>
That is the new border czar. Trump was not joking when he talked about closing the border and taking the issue of illegal immigration seriously.
Tom Homan as the “border czar” was not Trump&#8217;s only announced pick over the weekend. He also announced Rep. Elise Stefanik to his choice for the U.N. ambassador role.
That&#8217;s a great job. If you have to pick any job in the American government, U.N. ambassador is a fantastic job because you have a very nice apartment in New York City, and then you go over to the U.N., which is a repository of all human scum, and yell at dictators all day. It&#8217;s a pretty phenomenal job.
Stefanik happens to be an excellent candidate for this position. Just last December, she stood up to antisemitism on college campuses. In last year’s Committee on Education and the Workforce hearing on “Holding Campus Leaders Accountable and Confronting Antisemitism,” Stefanik <a href="https://stefanik.house.gov/2023/12/icymi-during-questions-from-stefanik-presidents-of-harvard-upenn-mit-refuse-to-condemn-calls-for-genocide-of-jews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pressed</a> then-Harvard University President Claudine Gay, along with several other university heads, whether allowing antisemitic chants calling for the elimination of the state of Israel was, in fact, antisemitic:

Gay: Again, it depends on the context.

After this hearing — and after she was found to have plagiarized multiple works, including her dissertation — Gay ended up losing her job.

Morale among U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents has skyrocketed following Donald Trump&#8217;s landslide election victory last week, according to National Border Patrol Council President Paul Perez.
Trump made illegal immigration and border security central parts of his 2024 platform, promising to finish his southern border wall and conduct the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. Perez told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/border-patrol-morale-through-roof-after-trumps-re-election-union-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> in an interview on Monday that &#8220;morale is through the roof&#8221; among Border Patrol agents, adding, &#8220;We’ve received hundreds of calls, texts, emails, just saying how happy the agents are.&#8221;
&#8220;There are a lot of agents that had originally said that they would retire if President Trump did not win. And now those same agents are saying they&#8217;re going to hold back on their retirement because they want to serve under this administration again, because they know exactly how it was during this first administration, and they know this one&#8217;s going to be even better,&#8221; he continued.
The National Border Patrol Council, which represents around 16,000 members, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/border-patrol-union-urges-americans-to-vote-for-trump-to-end-the-chaos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endorsed</a> Trump&#8217;s White House bid in October, with Perez warning, &#8220;If we allow Border Czar Harris to win this election, every city, every community in this great country, is going to go to hell. The untold millions of people, unvetted, who she has allowed into this country that are committing murders, rapes, robberies, burglaries, and every other crime will continue to put our country in peril.&#8221;
The Biden administration&#8217;s border policies led to around <a href="https://homeland.house.gov/2024/05/22/startling-stats-factsheet-biden-administration-on-track-to-reach-10-million-encounters-nationwide-before-end-of-fiscal-year/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">10 million encounters</a> along the southern border in less than four years. According to a news report, members of the brutal Sinaloa drug cartel in Mexico have been &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13980989/mexican-cartels-border-patrol-agents-biden-harris-migrant-crisis.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">given permission&#8221;</a> to fire at U.S. Border Patrol agents.
An internal memo was transmitted to federal agents in the El Paso Sector warning the agents of the new danger, <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/immigration/border-coverage/drug-cartels-permission-shoot-border-patrol-agents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NewsNation</a> reported. According to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRocReYwhHI">report</a> broadcast on the outlet, &#8220;Mexican cartels have given permission to its members to shoot at U.S. agents at the border.&#8221;
The memo revealed that two days prior, shots had been fired at contractors working in the Eagle Pass area of Texas’ Del Rio Sector. The new problem has arisen following the internecine fighting among members of the cartel after cofounder Ismael &#8216;El Mayo&#8217; Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of imprisoned Joaquín &#8220;El Chapo&#8221; Guzmán, were arrested by U.S. authorities on July 25.
“They fear no one anymore, especially U.S. law enforcement,” former Homeland Security Investigation agent Victor Avila told NewsNation. “They do have the resources and they do have the capability, and they will use them against us. &#8230; The No. 1 reason they fight for these plazas is because these plazas are the corridors to enter the United States, whether California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and that’s the major fight because the Sinaloa cartel has controlled that whole area.”

The comments come as border security and illegal immigration have been ranked as some of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/americans-say-that-immigration-is-the-top-issue-facing-the-country-for-third-month-in-a-row">most important issues</a> on the minds of voters as the election draws near.
“I’m not doing this … again,” one anonymous agent said in an <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/15/us-news/border-patrol-agents-threaten-to-leave-if-kamala-harris-wins/">interview</a> with the New York Post, going on to describe working under the Biden-Harris administration as “four years in hell.” Another agent added that “lots of guys who can retire will go” if Harris wins, but that “if Trump wins, they’ll stay.”

Yuma Border Patrol Chief Chris Clem also commented on the current administration, saying that it has damaged morale among Border Patrol agents. “The morale has never been as low in the Border Patrol, but under the Biden-Harris administration and her current ads, acting like she’s pro-border security is just putting salt on an already gaping wound for the morale of border Border Patrol agents and law enforcement.”
Harris recently released an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-harris-ad-features-trumps-border-wall-as-harris-pivots-on-immigration">advertisement</a> in which she markets herself as a “border state prosecutor,” with one shot even featuring an image of the border wall constructed under the Trump administration. Harris’ pivot on immigration comes as the Biden-Harris administration has presided over a historic increase in illegal immigration on both the southern and northern border. <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2455010/illegal-border-crossers-total-over-10-million-since-biden-inauguration/">More than 10 million</a> people have crossed the border under the Biden-Harris administration, with an estimated <a href="https://cis.org/Arthur/Blockbuster-House-Report-Reveals-How-Badly-Bidens-Broken-Our-Immigration-System">1.7 million illegal immigrant gotaways recorded</a> since Biden was inaugurated in 2021.
