On Sunday in Biarritz, France, some of the leaders of the G-7 summit, including President Trump, got a surprise: French president Emmanuel Macron had surreptitiously invited Iran’s foreign minister Javad Zarif to the town — and he showed up.
Jennifer Jacobs of Bloomberg reported, “US officials say Trump and White House didn’t know about Zarif’s visit to Biarritz before Trump left DC. Not clear whether US was ever told ahead of Zarif’s arrival. Saturday night’s G7 leader dinner was tense; leaders at odds over Iran and whether to invite Putin next yr.”
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who as ambassador had been unflinching when she confronted the despotic Iranian regime at the U.N., blasted Macron for his underhanded behavior, tweeting, “This is completely disrespectful to @realDonaldTrump and the other leaders at the G7. Iran supports terrorism at every turn and continues to pursue ‘Death to America.’ Manipulative of Macron to do this and very insincere. #NotWhatFriendsDo.”
Bloomberg noted that the French government claimed Zarif’s visit was not to meet the G-7 leaders, but rather to meet nearby with the French foreign minister. That seemingly flies in the face of the fact that Zarif met with Macron in Paris as recently as last week.
Bloomberg added, “Macron had wanted to shake up the summit, and he has already angered the American side, which accused him of trying to manipulate the agenda to embarrass Trump.” Bloomberg revealed that the Italians only discovered Zarif was coming after French news wire AFP published the news.
At a dinner for the G-7 leaders, Macron bragged of his talks with Iran, “We’ve enacted a common communication, which in my view has a lot of value.” Trump fired back, “We’ll do our own outreach. But I can’t stop people from talking.”
Haley has never been shy about ripping Iran’s repressive regime. In November 2018, speaking as the U.N. was preparing to vote on its annual resolution condemning the U.S. for its embargo on Cuba, (which in 2017 was endorsed by every country except for the U.S. and Israel), Haley stated, “Like the Castro regime, the Iranian regime violently represses dissent, imprisons and kills its political opponents, and abuses women and religious and ethnic minorities. Like the Castro dictatorship, the Tehran government has rigged its economy in favor of its regime and its cronies. And both governments use these stolen funds to finance their aggression abroad.”
In April 2018, Haley said at the U.N., “We will not hesitate to protect our interests, defend our allies, and stand up for our values. We have, for example, entered a new era of leadership in our relationship with Iran. The Iran nuclear deal was designed to be too big to fail. For years, not just the United States, but our allies in Europe, have overlooked Iranian ballistic missile launches, support for terrorists, and the oppression of the Iranian people in order to preserve the nuclear deal.”
In January 2018, after protests against the Iranian regime erupted and at least 21 people were reportedly killed, according to The Hill, Haley spoke out, saying:
Now the Iranian dictatorship is trying to do what it always does, which is to say that the protests were designed by Iran’s enemies. We all know that’s complete nonsense … The demonstrations are completely spontaneous. They are virtually in every city in Iran. This is the precise picture of a long-oppressed people rising up against their dictators. The international community has a role to play on this. The freedoms that are enshrined in the United Nations charter are under attack in Iran.
She added, “Dozens have already been killed. Hundreds have been arrested. If the Iranian dictatorship’s history is any guide, we can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come.”
