Former President Donald Trump courted his donors at Mar-a-Lago last week, calling on them to pitch in their financial support for a fellow Republican and promising them he would cut their taxes if he’s re-elected in 2024.

In a video of his Thursday speech posted to Facebook by an attendee, Trump is seen alongside North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson as the former president encourages his “rich as hell” donors to get behind Robinson’s bid to win the governorship next year.

“I just want to thank everybody. Whatever you can do to help Mark and [his wife] Yolanda win this election. And he’s got a tough opponent, not a good opponent, but a tough opponent, a political person,” Trump told the crowd of some of his biggest supporters.

“But you got to help them financially because you are all people that have a lot of money! I know 20 of you, and you’re rich as hell!” he added, sparking laughter from the crowd.

Trump then praised Robinson, saying that Republicans need to “cherish” him because he’s “a star.” Robinson, who became the North Carolina lieutenant governor in 2021, is running against four other Republicans for the party’s nomination. Democrats have controlled the governor’s mansion in the Tar Heel State since 2017 after Governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Pat McCrory in the 2016 election.

“I hope you can back him and write checks for him and do everything. And then we’re going to close the border. We’re going to give you tax cuts, we’re going to pay off our debt,” Trump said. “We’re going to do all of the things that we have to do.”

Under Trump’s policies as president, corporate tax rates were slashed from 35% to 21%. Trump also cut taxes for Americans in nearly every income category, but the former president’s tax cuts are set to expire in 2025. As the leading Republican candidate, Trump has emphasized the economy on the campaign trail, a top issue for voters around the country.

“Were you better off five years ago or are you better off today?” Trump asked the crowd at his New Hampshire rally on Saturday. “Not one thing has gotten better under crooked Joe Biden.”
