President Trump on Monday ripped the FBI’s raid of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s office, calling it a “disgrace” and an attack on the United States.
“So I just heard they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys. It’s a disgraceful situation. It’s a total witch hunt. I’ve been saying it for a long time. I’ve wanted to keep it down. I’ve given over a million pages in documents to the special counsel. They continue to just go forward,” Trump said. “It’s an attack on on our country … what we all stand for.”
“When I saw this, when I heard about it, that is a whole new level of unfairness.”
On special counsel Robert Mueller, Trump said people have said he should fire him, and he again criticized former FBI Director James Comey, whom he did fire. He called the special counsel’s office highly flawed.
“This is the most biased group of people. These people have the biggest conflicts of interest I have ever seen. Democrats — all. Either Democrats or a couple of Republicans who worked for President Obama. They’re not looking at the other side — Hillary Clinton … all of the crimes that were committed, all of the things that happened that everybody is very angry about from the Republican side and the independent side. They only keep looking at us. …”
“And the other side is where there are crimes and those crimes are obvious — lies under oath all over the place, emails that are knocked out, that are acid washed and deleted, 33,000 emails were deleted after getting a subpoena from Congress. And nobody bothers looking at that. …”
“I think it’s a disgrace what’s going on. We’ll see what happens. Many people have said, ‘You should fire him [Mueller]’. Again, they found nothing and in finding nothing that’s a big statement because you know the person who is in charge of the investigation — you know all about that — Deputy Rod Rosenstein he wrote the letter very critical of Comey,” Trump said.
“Well, I turned out to do the right thing” in firing Comey, he said.
“If you look at all of the things he’s done and the lies and you look at what’s going on at the FBI, turned out I did the right thing. But it turns out he also signed the FISA warrant — Rod Rosenstein, who’s in charge, also signed the FISA warrant and he also wrote the letter that fired Comey and he was right about that. He was absolutely right about that.”
Before a White House meeting of top military leadership, Trump also ripped Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from an investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.
“The attorney general made a terrible mistake when he did this and when he recused himself or he certainly should have let us know if he was going to recuse himself and we would have put a different attorney general in. So he made what I consider to be a very terrible mistake for the country. But you’ll figure that out,” Trump told reporters.
In the raid, the FBI seized records of payments before the 2016 presidential election to porn star Stormy Daniels, who claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006.
Cohen is also being investigated for possible bank fraud and campaign finance violations, The Washington Post reported.
“Also seized in the Monday raid were tax documents and business records, and communications between Cohen and Trump, reported The New York Times, which broke the story of the office no-knock raid. Fox News reported documents also were taken from Cohen’s home and the hotel room in which he was staying while repairs were being done to his home,” Deadline reported.
Michael Cohen’s lawyer, Stephen Ryan, said of the raid: “Today the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients. I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller.”
