The results were surprising: 55% said they think the former vice president, 77, &#8220;is in the early stages of dementia.&#8221;
&#8220;Overall, subgroups who normally approve of Trump&#8217;s job as president, were the most likely to believe Biden could be suffering from dementia,&#8221; the <a href="https://zogbyanalytics.com/news/943-the-zogby-poll-a-majority-of-voters-believe-biden-is-in-the-early-stages-of-dementia-60-of-younger-voters-think-so-swing-voters-less-likely-to-think-biden-has-dementia">poll found</a>. &#8220;Thus, majorities of Republicans (77% more likely/23% less likely) and Independents (56% more likely/44% less likely) thought Joe Biden had early-onset dementia; while nearly a third of Democrats (32% more likely/68% less likely) thought this was the case.”
&#8220;At the same time, some important subgroups did not believe the vice president was exhibiting a declining mental capacity. While a majority of men (60% more likely/40% less likely) thought it this was likely, women (50% more likely/50% less likely) were less likely to think that the vice president was in the early stages of dementia,&#8221; Zogby International wrote.

Younger voters aged 18-24 (60% more likely/40% less likely) and 18-29 (59% more likely/41% less likely) were more likely to believe Biden had dementia than older voters aged 65+ (50% more likely/50% less likely).
Likely voters living in medium size cities (61% more likely/39% less likely) were more likely to believe Biden had dementia than voters living in the suburbs (52% more likely/48% less likely) and large cities (55% more likely/45% less likely). Suburban women (49% more likely/51% less likely) did not think Biden was mentally slipping but men living in urban areas (62% more likely/38% less likely) believed so.</blockquote>
President Trump has blasted Biden – who he calls &#8220;Sleepy Joe&#8221; – over his repeated verbal stumbles and memory lapses, calling him an old man who should be put in a retirement home.
&#8220;They are going to put him in a home and other people are going to be running the country,&#8221; Trump said in early March during a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina.
&#8220;Sleepy Joe,&#8221; Trump added, &#8220;he doesn&#8217;t even know where he is or what he&#8217;s doing or what office he&#8217;s running for. Honestly, I don&#8217;t think he knows what office he&#8217;s running for.&#8221;
Biden has sought to laugh off the reports.
During a May interview on Snapchat’s “Good Luck America” daily political show, Biden was asked by host Peter Hamby how he plans to “fight back” against the notion that he’s “old” and “kind of lame.”
“The Shorenstein Center up at Harvard did an analysis of all of the anti-Biden memes out there on the internet,” Hamby said. “According to them, the top three slogans they’re seeing, this is from the left and the right, are Dementia Joe, Sleepy Joe, Creepy Joe. Barack Obama reportedly said last week that his daughters had been showing him anti-Biden TikToks. Basically, there’s an entire discourse on the internet right now that’s painting you as creepy and old and out of touch and kind of lame. How do you fight back against that?”
Biden laughed, then said, &#8220;I can hardly wait to get onto the stage with Donald Trump. Look, I certainly miss being out on the trail connecting face-to-face to people. Trump is a master at laying nicknames on people.”
“But the vast majority of the voters out there, including young people, are not getting all their news from the internet,” he said. “But I’m trying to compete there. We’re getting started late in the comparative sense. One hundred and two million video views across social media platforms since mid-March for me.”

The Oklahoma Army National Guard is activating up to 250 soldiers to help provide security during President Trump’s campaign rally Saturday in Tulsa, authorities said Wednesday.
The guardsmen will be used as a “force multiplier” to help state and local police secure safety zones around the downtown BOK Center, where the rally will be held, Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin said, according to The <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/jun/17/national-guard-soldiers-activated-donald-trump-ral/">Washington Times</a>.
&#8220;The guardsmen will be unarmed but will carry shields, batons and pepper spray in case they need to protect themselves, said Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Geoff Legler,&#8221; said The Times.
Trump had originally scheduled the campaign rally for Friday, June 19, which is known as Juneteenth, a day to commemorate the first time slaves in Texas were told about the Emancipation Proclamation. Trump moved the date after an outcry from critics.
But his rally will still coincide with a two-day Juneteenth celebration Friday and Saturday in the Greenwood District near downtown. Several anti-Trump protests are also planned for Saturday.
An Oklahoma judge on Wednesday denied a request that would have forced Trump to cancel the campaign rally.
Two residents, who claim they are immunocompromised, joined with two Tulsa organizations &#8212; The Greenwood Cultural Centre and the John Hope Franklin Center for Reconciliation &#8212; to file suit against ASM Global, the management company of the BOK Center, where the rally is scheduled to be held.
They demanded that Trump be barred from holding the rally until event organizers outlined how social distancing measures would be employed to help stem the spread of coronavirus and alleged that the rally would lead to a dramatic spike in COVID-19 cases.
“If ASM Global moves forward with the event without adequate review, planning, training, protective equipment, and safeguards, cases of COVID-19 — and the unavoidable attendant deaths — will rise,” the complaint said.
The judge denied the complainants&#8217; request that rally goers wear mandatory face masks and practice other social distancing requirements.
Meghan Blood, a spokeswoman for the BOK Center, told Politico that the venue would adhere to the state’s regulations for events. Oklahoma currently lets business owners set their own social distancing rules.
“Government officials have advised that the campaign rally as planned is consistent with the guidance for the OURS [Open Up &amp; Recover Safely] plan for entertainment venues, however, in the event that the governing authorities impose new restrictions, we will notify the event organizers immediately,” Blood said in a statement to Politico.
Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale wrote on Twitter that rally attendees will undergo temperature checks and receive free face masks and hand sanitizer before entering the venue.
Democrats have decried the coming Trump rally &#8212; as well as others set for Florida, Texas, Arizona, and North Carolina &#8212; while back massive protests by Black Lives Matter.

Airlines are always looking to do less &#8230; for more.
After the 9-11 attacks in the U.S. in 2001, airlines in America did away with most meal services (and many started charging you $50 for an extra bag &#8212; that&#8217;ll teach those terrorists!).
Now, with COVID-19 emerging as a new threat in the states, airlines have decided to stop in-flight sales of alcohol on many flights (&#8216;cuz, you know, the coronavirus lives on those little bottles).
&#8220;Because COVID-19 can spread through surface contact, airlines have placed an emphasis on reducing &#8216;touchpoints&#8217; between fliers and airline staff as much as possible. And beverage service is a major source of those touchpoints,&#8221; The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2020/06/17/airlines-are-cutting-alcohol-prevent-spread-coronavirus/">Washington Post</a> reported.
&#8220;To that end, Delta has nixed all beverages on board for the time being aside from single-serve bottles of water. Glassware, ice, plastic cups, and other open containers have all been scrapped, too, although Delta allows travelers to bring their own food and nonalcoholic beverages aboard,&#8221; the Post said.
American Airlines will do much the same but offer alcoholic beverages on all flights &#8212; as long as you&#8217;re in first class. Booze will be available on “long-haul international flights” in the main cabin as well. Oh, and you can get a light snack &#8212; on trips of more than 900 miles.
JetBlue flights, meanwhile, are “offering a pre-sealed bag with water and two snacks,&#8221; a spokesman for JetBlue wrote in an email to The Post. “For our mint product (our version of first class), we are providing a limited selection of beer and wine in single-serve containers and pre-sealed meal boxes.”
Southwest Airlines has suspended alcohol service on all flights &#8212; temporarily, they say &#8212;  and reduced onboard service on flights of 251 miles or less.
Then there&#8217;s United. The massive airline has not done away with alcoholic beverages, although flights will “only serve sealed beverages” and will no longer offer “ice, coffee, and tea service, and poured alcohol,&#8221; The Post said.
It&#8217;s worse on other airlines. &#8220;On British budget airline EasyJet, water will be the only refreshment — and that will need to be requested from the crew, who will also monitor restroom use,&#8221; <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexandrasternlicht/2020/06/16/these-airlines-have-stopped-in-flight-alcohol-sales-because-of-coronavirus/#6369a1472756">Forbes</a> reported.
&#8220;Netherlands flagship airline KLM will no longer carry alcohol, but passengers can continue to ask crewmembers for more water and soft drinks,&#8221; Forbes wrote.
Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia, known for their in posh service and lush accouterments, have also temporarily stopped serving alcohol on flights.
&#8220;The UK&#8217;s flag carrier, British Airways, is suspending its alcohol service in the short-haul economy only (its &#8216;Euro Traveller&#8217; class), where customers will instead be offered complimentary refreshments along with a bottle of water. Special meals, including children&#8217;s meals, are temporarily unavailable,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/alcohol-ban-airlines-covid-19/index.html">CNN</a> wrote.

After Quaker Oats announced it would be removing Aunt Jemima from its 133-year-old brand of syrup and pancake mix, the company that makes Cream of Wheat says it is beginning a review of its brand and packaging, which features a black chef holding up a piping hot bowl of cereal.
&#8220;B&amp;G Foods, Inc. today announced that we are initiating an immediate review of the Cream of Wheat brand packaging,&#8221; the company said in a statement Wednesday. &#8220;We understand there are concerns regarding the Chef image, and we are committed to evaluating our packaging and will proactively take steps to ensure that we and our brands do not inadvertently contribute to systemic racism.&#8221;
Meanwhile, the company that makes Uncle Ben’s rice said Wednesday that &#8220;now was the right time to evolve&#8221; the brand. Their package features an elderly black man in a tuxedo next to its trademark saying, &#8220;Perfect Every Time.&#8221;
Mars Inc., the parent company of Uncle Ben&#8217;s, said in a release that as a global brand, &#8220;we know we have a responsibility to take a stand in helping to put an end to racial bias and injustices.&#8221;
“Racism has no place in society. We stand in solidarity with the Black community, our Associates and our partners in the fight for social justice,” Mars said. “We know to make the systemic change needed, it’s going to take a collective effort from all of us — individuals, communities and organizations of all sizes around the world.”
Uncle Ben’s was founded as Converted Brand Rice by Erich Huzenlaub and Gordon Harwell, according to the company&#8217;s website. The name “Uncle Ben’s” was born in the 1940s after the founders found out about a famed Texas farmer, referred to as Uncle Ben, who was renowned for his rice.
For the box&#8217;s cover, the image was modeled after Frank Brown, a waiter at the Chicago restaurant where Harwell had the idea, the website says.
The brand changes come after riots raged across the country following the death of George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25.
Also on Wednesday, Quaker Oats <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/quaker-oats-announces-it-is-changing-name-of-aunt-jemima-due-to-racial-stereotype">announced</a> that Aunt Jemima, its 131-year-old syrup, will be renamed and rebranded amid complaints that the syrup brand is based on a “racial stereotype.”
&#8220;As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers’ expectations,&#8221; Kristin Kroepfl, vice president and chief marketing officer of Quaker Foods North America, said in a press release.
&#8220;We recognize Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype. While work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough.
&#8220;We acknowledge the brand has not progressed enough to appropriately reflect the confidence, warmth and dignity that we would like it to stand for today. We are starting by removing the image and changing the name. We will continue the conversation by gathering diverse perspectives from both our organization and the Black community to further evolve the brand and make it one everyone can be proud to have in their pantry,&#8221; Kroepfl said.

That&#8217;s the take of Joy Behar, a co-host of ABC&#8217;s &#8220;The View,&#8221; who claims Trump’s Tulsa, Oklahoma, rally on Saturday is a far greater danger to public health than the Black Lives Matter protests occurring across the U.S.
“He only cares that you come and supply kudos to his massive ego,” Behar said Tuesday before demanding Trump supporters stay home. “He won’t even give you health insurance if you get sick. Why are you going? Why?”
“The rally for Trump is indoors,” Behar said. “The protesters are out in the streets and most of them are wearing masks, I notice, even though a lot of them are not. And they should be, but the indoor situation is ten times worse and much more dangerous. That’s all. It’s completely different.”
Another co-host, Sunny Hostin, agreed. “You’re inviting 60,000 people to a rally where … masks are optional,” she said. “They very well may be infected with a life-ending virus. I just think it’s – he&#8217;s a menace.”
Fellow co-host Meghan McCain, a conservative, said Behar and Hostin are hypocrites for praising gathering with tens of thousands of people while lambasting Trump for holding a rally.
“The message from the media is as long as you are protesting something or going to a rally that is of the right politics, you can do it and we’ll ignore the spread of COVID[-19],” Ms. McCain said, Mediaite <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/tv/joy-behar-meghan-mccain-clash-over-hypocrisy-of-pandemic-rallies-im-sorry-thats-ridiculous/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a>.
“So going to a Trump rally is somehow more dangerous than going to a rally in Brooklyn over the weekend,&#8221; McCain said. &#8220;We have to be consistent on this. And what we’re seeing is a lot of anger festering up. When you’re seeing people who are now taking it into their own hands and going and opening up playgrounds in Brooklyn because [Mayor Bill] de Blasio won’t let them, but at the same time hundreds of thousands of people can go protest in Brooklyn. The messaging is very confusing for people.”

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan watchdog group, offered high praise for the Trump administration on Tuesday, saying under its guidance, federal agencies delivered coronavirus aid “incredibly quickly,” preventing catastrophic effects to the economy during the COVID-19 crisis.
CBO Director Phillip L. Swagel said Capitol Hill moved speedily to approve aid for businesses and more than 100 million Americans, which was swiftly approved by President Trump. Then the Treasury Department moved “quickly and effectively” to process stimulus payments to Americans and business owners, the CBO said.
Swagel worked in the Obama administration during the 2008 financial crisis, when Congress also approved several economic stimulus packages. The CBO director said that aid went out quickly back then, but this time the response was even faster.
“The IRS and those other agencies deserve a lot of credit,” he said in a virtual forum sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.
The CBO&#8217;s praise differs greatly from reports from the mainstream media and Democrats that the Trump administration was not up to the task and that federal agencies could not handle the demand to stem damage from the pandemic.
Under a bill passed by Congress, individuals were eligible for payments of up to $1,200, but that amount declined for those with an adjusted gross income higher than $75,000 a year. The $1,200 payment dropped by 5% of every dollar above $75,000, or $50 for every $1,000. The benefit didn’t apply for individuals with incomes over $99,000.
The payments were processed quickly. Married couples with combined incomes of up to $150,000 received $2,400, subject to the same phaseout that applied to individuals. The payments were phased out entirely for couples making $198,000 or more. Families also got $500 per dependent child under the age of 16.
About 120 million U.S. taxpayers qualified for direct payments from the federal government under the bill, according to an analysis by one think tank.
Swagel also laid out the dramatic rise of the 2020 federal budget deficit as Congress passed $3 trillion in aid, $2 trillion of which has already been spent. But he said the problems are only short term.
“The fiscal steps taken so far have not greatly increased the burden on the Treasury of funding our debt,” he said. The CBO is projecting gross domestic product (GDP) will be $3.9 trillion lower in 2020 and 2021 than the agency had predicted in January, just before the coronavirus began sweeping across the U.S.
But a full comeback will take a while, Swagel said.
“The experience of recent downturns has been the recovery is prolonged,” he said. “We have it taking years to get back.”
On June 5, the U.S. unemployment rate shocked economists on Wall Street, dropping to 13.3% for the month of May.
Dow Jones experts had <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/04/the-may-unemployment-rate-is-expected-to-be-near-20percent-as-millions-more-lost-jobs.html">predicted</a> the rate would soar to 19.5% with another 8 million jobs lost, but the economists weren&#8217;t even close. The economy actually created more than 2.5 million jobs in May, the Labor Department reported.
The May gain was by far the biggest one-month jobs gain in U.S. history since at least 1939.

Other top Democrats cheered on “Black Lives Matter” crowds across the United States, with many attending rallies in honor of George Floyd, a black man who died while in the custody of Minneapolis police. But they were incensed that President Trump was planning campaign rallies.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a socialist from Vermont, wrote a week ago Monday on Twitter: “Congratulations to all who are out on the streets today peacefully protesting. Together, we will end police brutality. Together, we will defeat Trump. Together, we will fight for a government based on justice and compassion, not greed and lies.”
But by Thursday, like Demings, Sanders was blasting Trump and the Republicans’ decision to hold its nominating convention in Florida — in late August.
“Trump wants 15,000 delegates cheering him at his GOP convention in Florida,” Sanders said. “No social distancing. His rejection of medical advice endangers not only those there but those they come in contact with. Trump’s a threat to the health and well-being of the country. He must be defeated.”

But by Thursday, Demings changed her tune (perhaps signifying that she’s a perfect choice for Biden).
“The president’s plan to hold mass rallies in Florida and elsewhere as we experience a resurgence in COVID cases is irresponsible and selfish,” Demings said.
“Do as I say, not as I do,” is the Democratic mantra.
Demings wasn’t alone in flip-flopping. Other top Democrats cheered on “Black Lives Matter” crowds across the United States, with many attending rallies in honor of George Floyd, a black man who died while in the custody of Minneapolis police. But they were incensed that President Trump was planning campaign rallies.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a socialist from Vermont, wrote a week ago Monday on Twitter: “Congratulations to all who are out on the streets today peacefully protesting. Together, we will end police brutality. Together, we will defeat Trump. Together, we will fight for a government based on justice and compassion, not greed and lies.”
But by Thursday, like Demings, Sanders was blasting Trump and the Republicans’ decision to hold its nominating convention in Florida — in late August.
“Trump wants 15,000 delegates cheering him at his GOP convention in Florida,” Sanders said. “No social distancing. His rejection of medical advice endangers not only those there but those they come in contact with. Trump’s a threat to the health and well-being of the country. He must be defeated.”
Demings, too, whined about Trump’s plans to travel to Florida. “Unfortunately, Florida is experiencing a new surge in COVID-19 cases. I urge you to do everything you can to protect yourself and your neighbors. Wear a mask. Limit gatherings,” she wrote.
The mainstream media, of course, got on board.
“‘Extraordinarily dangerous’: Trump rally draws grave concerns from top health officials,” said an NBC News headline Sunday. For its piece on protests in Brooklyn — which never once mentioned the pandemic — NBC wrote this headline: “Rally for Black trans lives draws packed crowd to Brooklyn Museum plaza.”
Radio host Rush Limbaugh called out the two-faced Democrats.
“So you see, it’s OK for BLM, Black Trans Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, whatever. It’s OK for liberal Democrats to congregate and sardine themselves everywhere. That’s so cool. That’s fine. Let Trump do a rally and, somehow, he’s going to be responsible for murder! He’s gonna be responsible for death, responsible for people getting sick,” Limbaugh said.
Other politicians have done just the same. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whose disastrous policies likely killed thousands in his state, also applauded protesters as they smashed through New York City, looting stores and clashing with police trying to maintain order.
Cuomo said he “stands” with those defying stay-at-home orders to protest. But weeks before that, as millions across the state were losing their jobs, Cuomo told protesters demanding the state reopen: “You have no right to jeopardize my health … and my children’s health and your children’s health.”
On the West Coast, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti threatened in March to turn off utilities for any business that reopened, saying he wanted to punish “irresponsible and selfish” behavior. Then he turned around and supported the protests. “I will always protect Angelenos’ right to make their voices heard,” he said.
And Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, who threatened to hit violators of stay-at-home orders with $5,000 fines or 90 days in jail, sang a different song when thousands of protesters rioted in the nation’s capital, defacing memorials and monuments and torching a historic church. “We are grieving hundreds of years of institutional racism,” she said.
It goes beyond Trump. New York City officials, frustrated that residents in Brooklyn kept taking their children to a city park, welded the gates shut this week. The city had repeatedly padlocked the gates to the playground, but residents broke through at least 25 times in just a few weeks. It didn’t take them long to do so again.
Cuomo also took aim at anyone who doesn’t stay locked down, possibly forever. “Lots of violations of social distancing, parties in the street, restaurants and bars ignoring laws,” he wrote on Twitter. “Bars or restaurants that violate the law can lose their liquor license.”
So thick is the hypocrisy you can cut it with a knife. Democrats applaud the race riots and looting — anything to hurt Trump’s re-election chances. But for people who are being crushed under draconian lockdown measures enacted by state and city governments, they have no patience, no understanding.
Oh the hypocrisy.

Jim Carrey may be a few fries short of a Happy Meal.
Now the former funnyman, who mostly dropped out of acting to become a painter and fulltime political commentator on Twitter, has a new theory about President Trump.
“Be wary of diplomatic missions to Moscow prior to the Nov elections,” Carrey wrote Monday on Twitter, posting a painting of Russian President Vladimir Putin holding a tiny Air Force One in his hands. “Given the list of possible indictments he faces, Traitor Trump may be the first American President to defect.”

That&#8217;s right, Carrey is saying that if Trump takes a trip to Russia, he might just stay there. Yup, Carrey might just be the &#8220;Dumber&#8221; guy from his famed movie, &#8220;Dumb and Dumber.&#8221; The actor, 58, is suggesting that Trump could well be indicted after the November election, especially if he loses to Democrat Joe Biden in the presidential election.
Like many other celebrities who claimed they&#8217;d be leaving the U.S. if Trump got elected — and then didn&#8217;t — Carrey, too, has gone back on his word. In January, he publicly declared that he would not be sharing his political paintings anymore.
&#8220;To me, that was like a time, and it&#8217;s been a time, where I just wanted to be the lighthouse that was saying, &#8216;Hey, stay off the rocks, you&#8217;re headed for the rocks,'&#8221; he told <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/jim-carrey-done-with-political-art-paintings-donald-trimp-040024592.html">Yahoo Entertainment</a> in January. “We&#8217;re still headed for the rocks, but I&#8217;ve decided, &#8216;You understand my message, I don&#8217;t need to be steeped in it anymore.&#8217; I think after a while &#8230; you get stuck in that kind of stuff.&#8221;
Carrey has been getting weirder and weirder over the years. He believes the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine causes autism, and he’s into a whole new-age Zen thing (“There is no me. There is just things happening.”). He’s vehemently against guns — even though he’s starred in several movies with lots of gun violence — and has repeatedly blasted the National Rifle Association.
Meanwhile, his political leanings have become increasingly overt. In an interview with <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/jim-carreys-reluctant-return-hollywood-1134623">The Hollywood Reporter</a> in August 2018, Carrey explained that his political cartoons were his response to “the uncomfortable things that I see in this world.” While he said that he had generally tried to stay out of political activism in the past, he was looking into ways he could get more involved, at least on the local level.
“I try to avoid Hillary’s fundraising parties up in the hills around me,” he said. “Every once in a while, I’d hear one of them. She pretty much covered the clock. It was like, ‘Oh, Hillary’s over there now? Yeah, standing by the pool, making the pitch?’ That kind of world doesn’t appeal to me.”
&#8220;But I’m gonna be supporting the local guys here and making sure that [House Majority Leader] Kevin McCarthy doesn’t get back in,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I’d like to get [Congressman] Devin Nunes out of there forever. Trey Gowdy and Jim Jordan? I mean, what a f***ing collection of ne’er-do-wells, man. It’s just the worst of us encouraging the worst in us.&#8221;
As for his frequent lampooning of Trump, Carrey described it as his attempt to warn people on the Trump &#8220;train&#8221; about his rapidly approaching destruction at the hands of Robert Mueller, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jim-carrey-officially-turns-mueller-james-barrett">who ultimately let Carrey down</a>.
&#8220;When it’s all said and done and the Feds finally close in and he hands over the keys to Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago and whatever else he has, there’s going to be a celebration in this country such as has never been seen before,&#8221; Carrey predicted. &#8220;I guarantee it.&#8221;

New York City workers, frustrated that residents in Brooklyn kept taking their children to a city park, finally welded the gates shut.
The park, in a large Jewish community, had been the focus of city workers for some time as they tried to enforce lockdown orders. City playgrounds were shut down by Cuomo in a state order enacted April 1, when Cuomo took control out of the hands of city Mayor Bill de Blasio. The governor’s office said at the time that Cuomo took the step to prevent crowds from gathering.
But Cuomo allowed thousands to traipse through the city during protests over George Floyd, who died on Memorial Day in the custody of Minneapolis police, while de Blasio has come down hard on average citizens.
“How long can we keep our kids in prison?” asked one mom of six in the predominantly Hasidic area of Brooklyn, who declined to give her name, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/06/15/nyc-welds-shut-gate-to-williamsburg-playground-amid-coronavirus/">New York Post</a> reported. “I don’t feel like I live in a free country.”
One city worker was heard telling a parent: “We don’t know when it will open, but hopefully in a week or two. For now, it is closed,&#8221; The Post said.
The city had repeatedly padlocked the gates to the park, but residents broke through at least 25 times in just a few weeks. The Parks Department finally decided to weld the gates shut, although that didn&#8217;t last long.
“At this playground, a temporary measure was used to shut the playground after it was breached,” said Parks spokesman Anessa Hodgson in a statement. “It will be unwelded today and replaced with a lock.”
But within hours of a new padlock being put on the gates of the playground near Williamsburg, dozens of Hasidic locals crowded together and cheered when three men used bolt cutters to hack through, a video posted online shows.

Community activist Gary Schlesinger also pointed out the double standard, The Post notes.
“You have tens of thousands of people marching with no social distancing and it feels like a tale of two cities,” he said. “Parents of kids which are the majority of people who live in this community are very angry about this because you are talking about large families confined to small apartments for weeks and weeks. The mayor’s office should be cognizant of this, but to him it’s the complete opposite.”
Assembly Member Joseph Lentol, who organized the Monday rally, issued the following statement: &#8220;When attending today&#8217;s rally, I said I believe that the playground should be open and said so very strongly. While I did not see the locks being cut, I understand the frustration which would lead that to happening. Our families do not feel that they are being heard. I see this rally as a peaceful message, with the clipping of the locks as a strong signal that the families are unhappy and fed up. They want activities for their children and they want to be heard. The city must come up with a better plan than cutting off access to playgrounds entirely.&#8221;

The Justice Department has scheduled new dates for the federal government to resume executions of death-row inmates after a 17-year hiatus.
Attorney General William Barr has ordered the federal Bureau of Prisons to schedule the executions, beginning in mid-July, of four inmates convicted of killing children, according to The <a href="https://apnews.com/7833e9e01505af4c60a7f7632f75abbe">Associated Press</a>.
&#8220;The American people, acting through Congress and Presidents of both political parties, have long instructed that defendants convicted of the most heinous crimes should be subject to a sentence of death,” Barr said in a statement. “The four murderers whose executions are scheduled today have received full and fair proceedings under our Constitution and laws. We owe it to the victims of these horrific crimes, and to the families left behind, to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system.”
The Justice Department earlier scheduled five executions set to begin in December, but some of death-row inmates challenged the orders, arguing the federal government was seeking an end run around the law to execute inmates quickly.
In July 2019, Barr ordered the federal government to resume the death penalty and directed the Bureau of Prisons “to schedule the executions of five death-row inmates convicted of murdering, and in some cases torturing and raping, the most vulnerable in our society — children and the elderly.”
“Congress has expressly authorized the death penalty through legislation adopted by the people’s representatives in both houses of Congress and signed by the President,” Barr said in a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/federal-government-resume-capital-punishment-after-nearly-two-decade-lapse" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">statement</a>.  “Under Administrations of both parties, the Department of Justice has sought the death penalty against the worst criminals, including these five murderers, each of whom was convicted by a jury of his peers after a full and fair proceeding.  The Justice Department upholds the rule of law — and we owe it to the victims and their families to carry forward the sentence imposed by our justice system.”
The four set for execution are below, along with the Justice Departments descriptions about them:

<li>Daniel Lewis Lee, a member of a white supremacist group, murdered a family of three, including an eight-year-old girl. After robbing and shooting the victims with a stun gun, Lee covered their heads with plastic bags, sealed the bags with duct tape, weighed down each victim with rocks, and threw the family of three into the Illinois bayou. On May 4, 1999, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas found Lee guilty of numerous offenses, including three counts of murder in aid of racketeering, and he was sentenced to death. Lee’s execution is scheduled to occur on Dec. 9, 2019.</li>
<li>Lezmond Mitchell stabbed to death a 63-year-old grandmother and forced her nine-year-old granddaughter to sit beside her lifeless body for a 30 to 40-mile drive. Mitchell then slit the girl’s throat twice, crushed her head with 20-pound rocks, and severed and buried both victims’ heads and hands. On May 8, 2003, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona found Mitchell guilty of numerous offenses, including first degree murder, felony murder, and carjacking resulting in murder, and he was sentenced to death. Mitchell’s execution is scheduled to occur on Dec. 11, 2019.</li>
<li>Wesley Ira Purkey violently raped and murdered a 16-year-old girl, and then dismembered, burned, and dumped the young girl’s body in a septic pond. He also was convicted in state court for using a claw hammer to bludgeon to death an 80-year-old woman who suffered from polio and walked with a cane. On Nov. 5, 2003, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri found Purkey guilty of kidnapping a child resulting in the child’s death, and he was sentenced to death. Purkey’s execution is scheduled to occur on Dec. 13, 2019.</li>
<li>Dustin Lee Honken shot and killed five people — two men who planned to testify against him and a single, working mother and her 10-year-old and six-year-old daughters. On Oct. 14, 2004, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa found Honken guilty of numerous offenses, including five counts of murder during the course of a continuing criminal enterprise, and he was sentenced to death. Honken’s execution is scheduled to occur on Jan. 15, 2020.</li>
</ul>

Justice Department Sets Execution Dates For Federal Death Row Inmates After 17-Year Hiatus

HBO Max created a firestorm last week when it yanked “Gone With the Wind” — a 1939 film that won eight Academy Awards, including the first ever for a black woman — from its streaming service, calling the classic film &#8220;racist.&#8221;
And that&#8217;s just fine with rapper and actress Queen Latifah.
“Let ‘Gone with the Wind’ be gone with the wind,” said Latifah, whose real name is Dana Elaine Owens.
Owens, incidentally, portrays Hattie McDaniel, who won an Oscar for her portrayal of Mammy in GWTW, in the new Netflix series “Hollywood.&#8221;
She said McDaniel was treated badly during the 1940 Oscars ceremony. “They didn’t even let her in the theater until right before she got that award. Someone came outside and brought her into the auditorium. She wasn’t even allowed to sit in there. And then she had to read a speech that was written by a studio. You know that’s not what the hell she wanted to say,” Owens told The <a href="https://apnews.com/1dd5150f4926135a7c12316a4f64440e">Associated Press</a>.
&#8220;Then after that, all she could do was play the same kinds of roles … So the opportunities at that time and the way that those in power in that business were relegating us and marginalizing us and not allowing us to grow and thrive after that was just terrible,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And a lot of that is still around today.&#8221;
Last Tuesday, HBO Max yanked the Civil War epic from its catalog amid rising racial tensions in dozens of cities across the nation. The film immediately became the <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/media/gone-with-the-wind-amazons-bestseller">bestselling</a> film on Amazon by early Wednesday morning.
HBO&#8217;s move is the latest from the cancel culture following the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died on Memorial Day while in police custody.
“&#8217;Gone With The Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society,&#8221; said a network spokesman. &#8220;These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible,” the spokesman told <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/hbo-max-gone-with-the-wind-removed-1234629892/">Variety</a>.
“These depictions are certainly counter to WarnerMedia’s values, so when we return the film to HBO Max, it will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions, but will be presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history,&#8221; the spokesman said.
The classic 1939 film is based on Margaret&#8217;s Mitchell&#8217;s novel and earned 13 Academy Award nominations, winning eight, including best picture, best director, best actress, and best adapted screenplay.

Film director Spike Lee was forced to apologize over the weekend for supporting his friend and fellow director Woody Allen, who has been accused by his adopted daughter of molesting her when she was seven years old.
&#8220;I Deeply Apologize. My Words Were WRONG,&#8221; Lee wrote on Twitter. &#8220;I Do Not And Will Not Tolerate Sexual Harassment, Assault, Or Violence. Such Treatment Causes Real Damage That Can&#8217;t Be Minimized. &#8211; Truly, Spike Lee.&#8221;
The director of &#8220;Do The Right Thing,&#8221; whose real name is Shelton Jackson Lee, had defended Allen in an <a class="x5l" href="https://710wor.iheart.com/featured/len-berman-and-michael-riedel-in-the-morning/content/2020-06-12-spike-lee-tells-wors-len-michael-woody-allen-is-a-great-filmmaker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener external noreferrer">interview</a> Friday on the New York radio station WOR 710, calling Allen “a great, great filmmaker.”
“This cancel thing is not just Woody. And I think that when we look back on it, (we’re) gonna see that, short of killing somebody, I don’t if you can just erase somebody like they never existed. Woody’s a friend of mine,” Lee said. “I know he’s going through it right now.”
Allen has been accused over the years of molesting his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow in the early 1990s. Allen has always denied the allegation, at one point saying “I never molested my daughter – as all investigations concluded a quarter of a century ago.”
During Allen’s messy divorce from actress Mia Farrow, Dylan alleged that she was abused. While Allen was never criminally charged, presiding Justice Elliott Wilk wrote about the case that “credible testimony … prove[s] that Mr. Allen’s behavior toward Dylan was grossly inappropriate and that measures must be taken to protect her.”
After Allen, now 84, dated Farrow for a decade, the actress found nude pictures of her 21-year-old adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, taken by Allen. The couple split, and Previn, 49, and Allen are now married.
In 2017, when film producer Harvey Weinstein was accused by numerous women of rape and sexual assault, Allen came to his defense, saying he was  “sad” for Weinstein.
“The whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved,” he added. “Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up,” Allen said, according to the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41626750">BBC</a>.
In a weird coincidence, Allen’s own son, Ronan Farrow, is one of the reporters who investigated Weinstein, speaking to 13 women who said the Hollywood producer had sexually harassed or assaulted them and breaking a major story.
Allen said he had no idea about Weinstein, despite working with him on several films.
<blockquote>“No one ever came to me or told me horror stories with any real seriousness,” Allen told the BBC. “And they wouldn’t, because you are not interested in it. You are interested in making your movie.”
“But you do hear a million fanciful rumours all the time. And some turn out to be true and some — many — are just stories about this actress, or that actor.” …
Allen said he hoped the revelations, which emerged after an investigation by the New York Times, would lead to “some amelioration,&#8221; but said: “You also don’t want it to lead to a witch hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself. That’s not right either.”</blockquote>

The flood has been on since the rally was announced last week. By Sunday, more than 800,000 Trump fans had requested tickets for the president&#8217;s rally on Saturday at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “Just passed 800,000 tickets,” campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted on Sunday. “Biggest data haul and rally signup of all time by 10x. Saturday is going to be amazing!”
So many people have signed up for tickets that Parscale tweeted the campaign was looking to add a second event to accommodate the masses dying to see the president.
On Monday, Parscale said &#8220;over 1M requests&#8221; had come in, and noted that the campaign will be taking precautions amid the coronavirus pandemic. “Before entering, each guest will get: temperature check, hand sanitizer, mask,” Parscale tweeted. “There will be precautions for the heat and bottled water as well.”

Trump hasn&#8217;t held a political rally since March 2, first because of the pandemic and later because of racial strife in dozens of cities across the U.S. after George Floyd died in the custody of Minneapolis police.
Democrats are full of faux outrage over Trump&#8217;s decision to begin holding campaign rallies &#8212; even though Election Day is just 141 days from today.
&#8220;The president’s plan to hold mass rallies in Florida and elsewhere as we experience a resurgence in COVID cases is irresponsible and selfish,&#8221; Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) said on Thursday.
But on Monday, Demings, a Florida Democrat rising up as a possible choice as Joe Biden&#8217;s running mate, attended a massive &#8220;Healing and Hope&#8221; rally, where thousands of people were gathered. She told her Twitter followers she was there &#8220;to speak with our community as America grieves.&#8221;
Trump complained on Monday that Democrats are deploying &#8220;COVID shame&#8221; against him.
“The Far Left Fake News Media, which had no COVID problem with the Rioters &amp; Looters destroying Democrat-run cities, is trying to COVID Shame us on our big Rallies. Won’t work!” Trump wrote on <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1272529858501976065" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Twitter.</a>
Other top Democrats cheered on &#8220;Black Lives Matter&#8221; crowds across the U.S., with many attending rallies in honor of Floyd.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a socialist from Vermont who failed a second time to win the Democratic presidential nomination, wrote Monday on Twitter: &#8220;Congratulations to all who are out on the streets today peacefully protesting. Together, we will end police brutality. Together, we will defeat Trump. Together, we will fight for a government based on justice and compassion, not greed and lies.&#8221;
But by Thursday, Sanders was singing a different tune, singling out Trump and the Republicans&#8217; decision to hold its nominating convention in Florida.

‘Almost 1 Million People’ Request Tickets For President Trump’s Rally In Tulsa

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn says don&#8217;t worry, if Congress has its way, no one will be defunding the police any time soon.
Clyburn, South Carolina Democrat and the third-ranking lawmaker in the House, told CNN host Jake Tapper on &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; on Sunday that the &#8220;Defund the Police&#8221; movement, which has been gaining steam in some urban centers, will not succeed.
&#8220;Nobody is going to defund the police,&#8221; Clyburn said, whose congressional district includes most of the majority-black precincts in and around Columbia and Charleston.
But Clyburn said something has got to change.
&#8220;I didn&#8217;t grow up in fear of police, even in a segregated environment. We never feared the police. But, all of a sudden now, I do fear the police,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The fact of the matter is, this is a structure that has been developed that we have got to deconstruct. So, I wouldn&#8217;t say defund. Deconstruct our policing.&#8221;
Clyburn, a leader in the Congressional Black Caucus, said municipalities must &#8220;restructure&#8221; and &#8220;re-imagine&#8221; policing.
&#8220;We can restructure the police forces, restructure, re-imagine policing. That is what we are going to do. The fact of the matter is, the police have a role to play,&#8221; Clyburn said. &#8220;What we have got to do is make sure that their role is one that meets the times, one that responds to these communities that they operate in.&#8221;
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and other liberal Democrats support a movement to defund &#8212; and even abolish &#8212; police departments. They claim that police departments have systematic racism and that previous attempts to reform them have proved futile.
Political leaders in Minneapolis, almost all Democrats, have already moved to defund the city&#8217;s police department. On Friday, the Minneapolis City Council <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/minneapolis-city-council-unanimously-passes-resolution-to-replace-police-department-with-community-led-public-safety-system">unanimously voted</a> to replace its police department with a new &#8220;community policing&#8221; system for public safety. Meanwhile, police officers in the city are leaving the job in droves, convinced that political leaders no longer have their backs.
President Trump has been teeing off on the &#8220;defund the police&#8221; slogan. &#8220;However, top Democrats, including presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), quickly distanced themselves from the phrase,&#8221; <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/502560-defund-the-police-movement-hits-semantics-roadblock">The Hill</a> reported.
<blockquote>“The slogan may be misleading without interpretation,” Rev. Al Sharpton said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” this past week, adding that he understood the phrase to be more about deep-rooted reform efforts. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think anyone other than the far extremes are saying we don&#8217;t want any kind of policing at all,” he said.
But the need to explain the meaning behind the wording comes with its own set of critics. “If you’re explaining, you’re losing, and there’s a lot of explaining going on,” Meghan McCain, a right-leaning commentator said on ABC’s “The View.” “If you mean reform, say reform. If you mean defund, say defund. People are confused,” she added.</blockquote>

Howard Stern, the shock jock who is never at a loss for words, was suddenly speechless on Monday morning after a slew of headlines over the weekend about old videos that emerged showing him dressed in blackface and using the N-word over and over.
In one clip, Stern, wearing minstrel-style makeup, is seen mocking actor Ted Danson, who wore blackface as a &#8220;joke&#8221; at a New York City Friar&#8217;s Club event in 1993. Danson was roasting his then-girlfriend Whoopi Goldberg.
On his XM-Sirius radio show on Monday, Stern didn&#8217;t apologize. Instead, he said, &#8220;the big headline is this: and this is my fear in all of this. I was able to change my approach, and able to change my life and, you know, how I communicated. You know, if I had to do it over again, would I lampoon Ted Danson, a white guy in black face, doing, you know — yeah, I was lampooning him, saying, hey, f***, I&#8217;m going to shine a light on this, but, would I go about this the same way now? Probably not.&#8221;
Then Stern added: &#8220;Not probably. Wouldn&#8217;t.&#8221;
Before he looked inward, the self-crowned &#8220;King Of All Media&#8221; blamed Donald Trump Jr. for digging up the old videos. What the president&#8217;s son did: Retweet a Twitter post about the videos. Stern implied that President Trump was involved in the hit, too.
&#8220;They leak TV shows that have been on TV to the press,&#8221; he said. “Dude, if you’re the president of the United States and you want to worry about me, go ahead.&#8221;
To the president, Stern said: &#8220;If you solve the pandemic, then we can go and review all my old shows.&#8221;
Listeners were speculating about how Stern would handle the mess when he returned to the air on Monday. His choice: Put on superfan &#8220;Marriann From Brooklyn&#8221; first to grease the skids by breathlessly praising Stern (Fred Norris, who plays drops on the show, didn&#8217;t add crows cawing over Marianne this time as he usually does).
“I know it was done with humor … yes, we make mistakes in life, we all do …” she said, then added, “I wrote this down … did I say it correctly?”
Stern also said he sought psychotherapy to deal with his problems, saying at one point, &#8220;I think I might have been insane.&#8221; And he said he&#8217;d do anything for a laugh. But he made clear: &#8220;I&#8217;m not apologizing.&#8221;
&#8220;Look, that was the show. I went into therapy and said, what is this? Do I always have to be the guy pulling my pants down? Can I find a way to do the show where I can be a lot happier? Over the years, I did change the show,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;At the same point, I will say, it f***ing distresses me that Donald Trump Jr. and Donald themselves won’t go into psychotherapy and change,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Attacking me during the coronavirus and Black Lives Matter is absolutely f***ing crazy, concentrating on me. You want to concentrate on me and bully me, and expose me, with all the TV shows I’ve done? They’re all out there. There’s nothing new here.&#8221;
“I assume Donald [Trump] is putting [his son] up to this,” he said, in response to Stern endlessly bashing the president. “According to the [New York] Post, they have sicced their dogs on me.”
Stern also said he&#8217;s &#8220;not a hater.&#8221;
&#8220;I’m excited about being on the radio as most of those who listen on the radio know,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I’m excited about gay rights, telling you not to beat up gay people. I’m excited about the changes that are coming out of Black Lives Matter.&#8221;
Stern&#8217;s Danson routine appeared on “New Year’s Rotten Eve Pageant,” which aired on pay-per-view on Dec. 31, 1993, the <a href="https://pagesix.com/2020/06/12/howard-stern-under-fire-for-past-use-of-blackface-skit-with-n-word/">New York Post</a> reported.

Lawmakers in Congress &#8212; who spend most of their time bickering about minutia and playing politics &#8212; are expected to get back to the business of the American people, which is figuring out a way to help the millions of Americans hurting because of the COVID-19 lockdowns and shuttering of businesses deemed &#8220;non-essential&#8221; during the pandemic panic.
More than 44 million Americans have lost their jobs in an economy that was recently declared to be officially in a recession. Lawmakers agreed months ago to provide one-time payments of $1,200 to taxpayers who make less than $75,000 a year, but plans for a second payment have been mired in political wrangling and have so far gone nowhere.
Last month, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) pushed a bill through the Democrat-controlled chamber that would spend some $3 trillion on a slew of projects, only a portion of which would go to taxpayers. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has vowed that Republicans who control that chamber won&#8217;t pass a bill that spends more than $1 trillion. President Trump, for his part, splits the difference, urging the passage of a $2 trillion stimulus bill.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said last week that the Trump administration is considering more direct payments to Americans to stem the financial pain caused by the coronavirus pandemic. &#8220;I think we’re going to seriously look at whether we want to do more direct money to stimulate the economy,&#8221; Mnuchin said Wednesday while testifying before the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Under another $3 trillion package passed by House Democrats in May, the federal government could send a second round of $1,200 checks to American adults and children. But lawmakers say those payments wouldn&#8217;t go out until July at the earliest.
Some senators, including Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who is on the shortlist to become Joe Biden&#8217;s running mate, are pushing for more. Harris, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Sen Ed Markey (D-MA)  proposed a bill in May that would give most Americans a monthly payment of $2,000 until the virus starts to recede, similar to the &#8220;universal base income&#8221; pushed by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang.

But Congress is under no urgency to help Americans. In fact, lawmakers plan to take a two-week recess, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/coronavirus-relief-bill-july-senate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-component="externalLink">CBS News</a> reports, from July 3 until July 17, so any action to help won&#8217;t come until after they return.
Under the second stimulus bill, individuals were eligible for payments up to $1,200, but that amount declined for those with an adjusted gross income higher than $75,000 a year. The $1,200 payment dropped by 5% of every dollar above $75,000, or $50 for every $1,000. The benefit didn&#8217;t apply for individuals with incomes over $99,000.
Married couples with combined incomes up to $150,000 received $2,400, subject to the same phaseout that applies to individuals. The payments were phased out entirely for couples making $198,000 or more. Families also got $500 per dependent child under the age of 16.
About 120 million U.S. taxpayers qualified for direct payments from the federal government under the bill, according to an analysis by one think tank.

In April, Stern offered his endorsement for Joe Biden and suggested that Trump’s supporters “take disinfectant” and “drop dead.”
“I would love it if Donald would get on TV and take an injection of Clorox and let’s see if his theory works,” Stern said. “Hold a big rally, say f*** this coronavirus, with all of his followers, and let them hug each other and kiss each other and have a big rally.”
“A big cocktail of disinfectant,“ said sidekick Robin Quivers. “Yeah,” Stern said. “And all take disinfectant and all drop dead.”
Then in May, Stern made headlines again when he said that Trump &#8220;despises&#8221; his own supporters. &#8220;One thing Donald loves is celebrities, he loves the famous. He loves it. He loves to be in the mix,&#8221; Stern said. &#8220;The oddity in all of this is the people Trump despises most, love him the most.&#8221;

If you&#8217;ve wondered who&#8217;s paying for all the people hospitalized with COVID-19, the answer sometimes is &#8212; you.
A Seattle man who spent two months in the hospital battling COVID-19 just got a 181-page bill for $1.12 million for treatment of the virus. Michael Flor, 70, was admitted to Swedish Medical Center in Issaquah, Washington, on March 4 and spent 62 days in the facility before finally recovering and being discharged.
&#8220;Flor, 70, who came so close to death in the spring that a night-shift nurse held a phone to his ear while his wife and kids said their final goodbyes, is recovering nicely these days at his home in West Seattle. But he says his heart almost failed a second time when he got the bill from his health care odyssey the other day,&#8221; the <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/inspiring-story-of-seattle-mans-coronavirus-survival-comes-with-a-1-1-million-dollar-hospital-bill/">Seattle Times</a> reported. &#8220;I opened it and said ‘holy [bleep]!&#8217; Flor says.&#8221;
The bill featured almost 3,000 itemized charges, an average of about 50 for each day of his hospital stay. He was billed $408,912 for 42 days in the intensive care room, which was equipped with a special isolation chamber, and $82,215 for ventilator use, which lasted 29 days.
&#8220;Just the charge for his room in the intensive care unit was billed at $9,736 per day,&#8221; The Times reported. &#8220;Due to the contagious nature of the virus, the room was sealed and could only be entered by medical workers wearing plastic suits and headgear. For 42 days he was in this isolation chamber, for a total charged&#8230;of $408,912.&#8221;
The Seattle Times reported that Flor&#8217;s condition grew very serious &#8220;for the two days when Flor&#8217;s heart, kidneys, and lungs were all failing and he was nearest death.&#8221; During that time, he received treatments by doctors for which he was billed nearly $100,000.
Because Flor is 70, he has Medicare, a federally funded health care program paid for by U.S. taxpayers. Plus, there are special financial rules enacted in place by Congress amid COVID-19. Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, both approved in April, private health issuers and employer group health plans must &#8220;cover COVID-19 testing and services furnished during the pandemic, with no out-of-pocket expense.&#8221;
&#8220;As a result, Flor probably won’t have to pay even his Medicare Advantage policy’s out-of-pocket charges, which could have amounted to $6,000,&#8221; The Times wrote. &#8220;The insurance industry has estimated treatment costs just for COVID-19 could top $500 billion, however, so Congress is being asked to step up with more money.&#8221;
Still, the money&#8217;s got to come from somewhere, so check your wallet.
Flor told The Times he was surprised at his own reaction: guilt.
“I feel guilty about surviving,” he said. “There’s a sense of ‘why me?’ Why did I deserve all this? Looking at the incredible cost of it all definitely adds to that survivor’s guilt.”

HBO host Bill Maher says the &#8220;defund the police&#8221; movement being pushed by liberal Democrats is a &#8220;terrible idea&#8221; and will prompt more Americans to vote for President Trump in November.
&#8220;Liberals want to take police money, police funds and divert it to community services, which sounds like a very good thing, good idea,&#8221; Maher said Friday during the opening monologue of his show &#8220;Real Time with Bill Maher.&#8221;
&#8220;But they&#8217;re calling it &#8216;defund the police,&#8217; which sounds bad!&#8221; he said.
&#8220;That is so Democrats for you,&#8221; Maher said. &#8220;They must have meetings to be this f****ing stupid about politics. &#8216;Hey, guys. We&#8217;re making some headway here. Um, how can we turn this into something that makes people have to vote for Trump?'&#8221;
Maher also said that Democrats might be moving too far left, which could be bad on Election Day.
“I worry that Democrats are wandering into another purity test that’s not going to serve them well,” Maher said. “And it’s going to be about how much you want to get rid of police altogether.”
Trump has been teeing off on the &#8220;defund the police&#8221; slogan. &#8220;However, top Democrats, including presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), quickly distanced themselves from the phrase,&#8221; <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/502560-defund-the-police-movement-hits-semantics-roadblock">The Hill</a> reported.
<blockquote>“The slogan may be misleading without interpretation,” Rev. Al Sharpton said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” this past week, adding that he understood the phrase to be more about deep-rooted reform efforts. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think anyone other than the far extremes are saying we don&#8217;t want any kind of policing at all,” he said.
But the need to explain the meaning behind the wording comes with its own set of critics. “If you’re explaining, you’re losing, and there’s a lot of explaining going on,” Meghan McCain, a right-leaning commentator said on ABC’s “The View.” “If you mean reform, say reform. If you mean defund, say defund. People are confused,” she added.</blockquote>
Maher has warned that Americans had better put aside their political differences or “there will be blood.”
“This year, just celebrate Thanksgiving. Don’t try to win it. And never forget the single shining truth about democracy: it means sharing a country with ***holes you can’t stand,” Maher said in November.
Maher said politics have gotten ugly, especially with the explosion of social media.
“It’s no longer enough to just make a point,” he said. “You have to destroy. You have to own people. Except the person who gets owned doesn’t change their mind. They just make a mental note never to interact again with DM_Me_Your_T*tties.”
“Lately we’ve been hearing more and more about a second civil war, which sounds impossible in this modern, affluent country. It is not,” Maher said. “We talk about Trump as an existential threat, but his side sees Democratic control of the government the exact same way. When both sides believe the other guy taking over means the end of the world, yes, you can have a civil war.”
