Attorneys for former President Donald Trump visited the Department of Justice on Monday as special counsel Jack Smith appears to be wrapping up his investigation into classified documents confiscated from Mar-a-Lago.
Members of Trump’s legal team, including James Trusty and Lindsey Halligan, were spotted entering the DOJ on Monday morning. Trump’s attorneys had asked on May 23 to meet with DOJ officials, including Attorney General Merrick Garland, to discuss potential prosecutorial misconduct.
“No President of the United States has ever, in the history of our country, been baselessly investigated in such an outrageous and unlawful fashion. We request a meeting at your earliest convenience to discuss the ongoing injustice that is being perpetrated by your Special Counsel and his prosecutors,” the May 23 letter said.
The attorneys were first spotted walking into the Justice Department by CBS News.

Garland tapped Smith in November to investigate the storage of classified material in Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida residence and resort, after Trump left the White House in January 2021. Smith is reportedly nearing a charging decision on the storage of classified documents and on obstruction of justice.
Trump has said he declassified the material before moving it to Mar-a-Lago. The DOJ and National Archives obtained 15 boxes of material from Trump in early 2022 after rounds of negotiations. The FBI raided Trump’s resort in August and confiscated more boxes of material.
Trump attacked the special counsel investigation in a post on Truth Social over the weekend, alleging that the Justice Department has a double standard in its treatment of him versus President Joe Biden, who was found to have kept classified documents at his private office in Washington, D.C., and in his Delaware home.
“Reports are the Marxist Special Prosecutor, DOJ, & FBI, want to Indict me on the BOXES HOAX, despite all of the wrongdoing that they have done for SEVEN YEARS, including SPYING ON MY CAMPAIGN,” Trump posted. “Biden Crimes go unpunished, including that he had Boxes in Chinatown, in his garage by the “Corvette,” & 1,850 Boxes in Delaware that he won’t allow anyone to see. That is real OBSTRUCTION!”

“They seek retribution for Republicans looking into Biden’s CRIMES! I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG. ELECTION INTERFERENCE!” he added.
Smith took over the investigation into the material stored at Mar-a-Lago, as well as parts of the DOJ investigation into January 6, and Trump’s alleged role in the riot at the U.S. Capitol.
