President Donald Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, is under investigation for tax fraud, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
Cohen was Trump’s lawyer and “personal fixer” for decades, according to Business Insider, and may now be best known for allegedly arranging deals between Trump and several former girlfriends to keep the women from giving interviews that might derail Trump’s presidential ambitions. Cohen recently agreed to speak to investigators looking into a Trump Tower meeting between Russian officials offering dirt on Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, and several members of the Trump campaign, including Trump’s son, Donald Trump, Jr.
Now, though, the WSJ reports that Cohen may be in trouble of a different kind. Federal prosecutors in New York are probing allegations that Cohen underreported earnings from his taxi-medallion business, and whether “Cohen overstated his assets in obtaining loans.”
Investigators have already spoken to a bank that loaned Cohen money, and are interviewing Cohen’s former accountant, Jeffrey Getzel, as well as his taxi-medallion manager.
This isn’t new territory for Cohen. Aside from concerns over his involvement with Trump — which could land him in hot water with the Federal Election Commission — he’s also facing questions of illegal lobbying. Tax fraud seems to be just the latest in a long line of problems for Cohen.
