The government of Sweden has administered identity checks and and put up a “Berlin Wall” along its border with Denmark to keep out Muslim refugees. According to Daily Mail (UK), “The checks, which will go into effect from midnight (2300GMT) on the Danish side of the Oresund bridge-and-tunnel link, will cause several delays and long queues for all people travelling via train, bus and ferry.”
Despite a relatively lax immigration policy, Sweden has now determined it will no longer accommodate the unending influx of migrants; the system is overburdened.
“The measures come after Sweden, which has taken 160,000 asylum seekers in 2015 – a higher number of refugees per capita than any other country in the European Union – said it could no longer cope with the unregulated wave of arrivals,” reports Daily Mail. “Several other European Union countries, including Germany, Austria and France, also re-imposed border checks last year as the continent grappled with its biggest refugee crisis since World War II.”
Northern and Western European states are coming to realize what Eastern European states recognized long ago: Europe does not have the infrastructure to shoulder the burden of a mass migration.
A few weeks ago, Czech president Milos Zeman suggested that the influx of Muslim refugees amounts to an “organized invasion,” given that the vast majority of refugees are young and healthy men, adding, “A large majority of the illegal migrants are young men in good health and single. I wonder why these men are not taking up arms to go fight for the freedom of their countries against the Islamic State.”
Germany’s Angela Merkel has apparently followed suit as well. As The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro reported:
Now it turns out that Germans are so unhappy with Merkel’s “courageous” policy that Merkel is now backing off the policy…she said the flow of refugees would have to be “noticeably reduced.” She called the refugee crisis Germany’s “rendezvous with globalization” and added, “The war in Syria, the barrel bombings by Assad, the spread of IS in Syria and Iraq, the fact that Libya has no functioning government, the situation in Afghanistan – all that is no longer far away but has come to us.”…
Merkel read the tea leaves: her polls have been slipping for months. In October, she spoke before a party meeting, and members of the party bashed her as ushering in a “national disaster,” with some holding a banner reading, “Stop the refugee chaos – save German culture + values – dethrone Merkel.”
Even Europe’s naive “tolerance” has its limits. Ultimately, the continent is realizing that perhaps a mass influx of Muslim migrants during the age of terror may signal the collapse of European society.
