Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Won An MTV Movie Award

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg frequently makes history. But Monday evening, the 86-year-old jurist added another milestone to her resume: she received an MTV Movie Award.

CBS News reports that the “Notorious RBG” was given the “real life hero” award for her work at the Supreme Court and for her status as the most prominent pop culture feminist during the MTV Awards broadcast on Monday night. Ginsburg, who likely has far more important things to attend to, was, unsurprisingly, not present to collect her award, which resembles a golden bucket of popcorn.

The former music television network will probably ship her her trophy, but she will have missed out on the awards ceremony’s “shocking” and “incredible” moments, like when a Marvel movie beat out another Marvel movie for best picture.

“The MTV awards ceremony goes beyond the traditional scope of other awards shows. ‘Most meme-able moment,’ ‘best kiss,’ and ‘best frightening performance’ are just some of the unique categories at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which were held Monday night in Los Angeles,” according to CBS.

The “real life hero” award is, apparently, given to the subject of a documentary or miniseries released during the previous calendar year, and the “Notorious RBG” had some stiff competition. She beat out tennis star Serena Williams (the subject of an HBO documentary), quasi-comedian Hannah Gadsby (who apppeared in her own deliberately unfunny, “post-comedy” Netflix special, “Nanette”), Alex Honnold (whose “free climbing” talents were profiled in the Oscar-winning documentary, “Free Solo”), and the WWE’s Roman Reigns.

RBG’s star power wasn’t enough to take home the full complement of awards for which she was nominated, however. She missed out on “best documentary,” as well as “best fight” (her epic battle against inequality was apparently no match for the knock-down, drag-out between Captain Marvel and her arch-nemesis at the end of the movie, “Captain Marvel”) and she didn’t take home “most meme-able” (she lost out to the moment in the last “Bachelor” when then-bachelor Colton Underwood jumped a fence to escape a barrage of angry female contestants).

Ginsburg won for her portrayal in the documentary, “RBG,” which chronicles her real life work as a Supreme Court Justice. She was also the subject of “On the Basis of Sex,” a dramatization of her life that was released to minimal acclaim late last year.

Ginsburg had a rough go of it in 2018, despite the box office love. Late last year, the aging Supreme Court Justice, who had never missed a day on the bench while court was in session, fell and broke two of her ribs. During surgery to repair the injury, doctors discovered — and then removed — several cancerous nodes on her lungs, leaving her incapacitated for more than two months at the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019.

After a few weeks of rest and treatment, Ginsburg returned to working remotely, and was back on the Supreme Court by mid-February, just in time to join her new colleague, Brett Kavanaugh.
