President Donald Trump called Democrats “very strange” Wednesday. He was referring to the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates who have openly embraced exteme positions, like eliminating the Electoral College and packing the Supreme Court with additional justices, but he may as well have been talking about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s super fans.
And yes, Mueller has “super fans.”
The Associated Press revealed, in a detailed report released Wednesday, that the anti-Trump “Resistance,” which has been noticably silent since the 2018 midterm elections, has turned Mueller into something of a “folk hero,” and emblazoned his visage on everything from earrings to custom fabric made into purses, wallets, and makeup bags.
At least one super fan even named her dog “Mueller.”
“He gives me reassurance that all is not lost,” Mueller’s (the dog’s) owner told the AP. “I admire his mystique. I admire that I haven’t heard his voice. He is someone who can sift through all this mess and come up with a rationale that makes sense to everyone.”
The article describes a host of Mueller-themed products available for sale, mostly handmade and mostly up for grabs on the arts and crafts site, Etsy. Among them, paintings of Robert Mueller’s hair, candles that fashion Robert Mueller into a Catholic saint, coffee mugs, baby onesies, necklaces, earrings, Christmas ornaments and stuffed toys.
One artist even had custom fabric printed with Robert Mueller’s face, and then used the fabric to make custom makeup bags, tote bags, and purses, so that “Resistance” members can carry a little piece of Mueller around with them at all times.
If all this sounds creepy, it’s because it is. And it’s a little bit ahead of the game. Although Mueller has been hard at work rooting out “Russian collusion” for more than two years, he and his team have little to show for their effort. Of the 34 people questioned and seven arrested, none of them have been taken in for the crime of collaborating with Russian officials to alter the outcome of the 2016 presidential election — the crime Mueller was tasked with uncovering when his probe began.
Instead, Mueller has been hard at work rooting out IRS fraud, tax evasion, corruption, and perjury — important, but not “Russian collusion.”
Now, Mueller looks to be in the closing days of his investigation, at least according to comments made to various legal entities, and the results don’t look promising — at least for Democrats. If Mueller is finished with his probe, it means it’s unlikely he’s found evidence linking the Trump campaign directly to Russian efforts to undermine the 2016 election, leaving Mueller fans, who have been counting on him to save them from Trump’s presidency, in the lurch.
Fortunately, they can always swap out their Mueller purses for purses with the visage of Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). Even if Mueller’s report comes up empty, Schiff has plans to keep investigations into Trump’s business ventures and campaign personnel going until at least 2020.
