Wednesday afternoon, First Daughter and trusted White House advisor Ivanka Trump weighed in on the controversy surrounding Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore — and she didn’t mince words.
Ivanka was supposed to be doing an interview on the Republican tax reform plan — she’s working with Congress as an emissary from the White House, shepherding the president’s plan through the legislative process — but the Associated Press asked her how she felt about allegations that Moore targeted high school-aged (and allegedly underaged) girls as dating prospects when he was well into his 30s and serving as a district attorney.
‘There’s a special place in hell for people who prey on children. I’ve yet to see a valid explanation and I have no reason to doubt the victims’ accounts,” Trump answered.
Notably, she did not mention Moore by name, and did not echo Republican legislators in calling on Moore to step out of the race.
President Donald Trump, Ivanka’s father, hasn’t spoken on the matter, though rumors began to circulate on Monday that the White House was tiring of Moore’s antics, particularly in light of new allegations connecting Moore to a female Trump voter who claims Moore sexually assaulted her, and in light of new polls which show Moore trailing his Democratic opponent by more than ten points.
Ivanka may be signaling that the White House wants Moore to shape up his slapdash campaign operation.
