On Saturday, a Spanish matador was killed after being gored by a bull during a match in the Landes region of France. Video of the incident shows 36-year-old Iván Fandiño tripping over his cape and falling down before being punctured by the raging bull.
“Other bullfighters quickly picked up Fandiño and removed him from the bullring, the video showed,” reports CNN. “He had already performed in a previous fight.”
Reeling from his injury, Fandiño didn’t die on the scene. He was declared dead after being taken to the hospital for grievous injuries to his lungs.

Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letzia commemorated Fandiño after hearing about the deadly incident. He was a “great figure of bullfighting,” said the royal family. The Spanish government also released a statement mourning his tragic loss.
Gruesome deaths caused by bullfighting have been drawing international attention attention more and more over the last few years.
“Last year, a professional Spanish bullfighter was gored to death during a competition on live television. Victor Barrio, 29, was killed in Spain’s eastern region of Aragon,” notes CNN. “Both professional bullfights and bull running events remain popular in Spain, especially in the summertime.”
As The Daily Wire reported, a Mexican matador was “brutally sodomized” in late March when “a raging bull rammed all 11 inches of its horn up [the bullfighter’s] rectum.” The victim survived the incident but underwent emergency treatment to his rectal area.
