A group of 40 former law enforcement officials who call themselves “The Case Breakers” declared that they had uncovered a clue to the identity of the infamous California Zodiac serial killer, who murdered at least five people in the Bay Area in the late 1960s.

Thomas J. Colbert of the Case Breakers, who have spent years looking into the unsolved case, told The Daily Mail that the team found the killer’s crosshairs symbol with “the serial killer’s painted symbol and strange coding on it” on a wooden post in Groveland, California, and that the post was roughly half a mile from property owned by Air Force veteran Gary Francis Poste, who died in 2018.

“The FBI does not confirm or deny any tips or information we may receive from the public,” the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office said. “The FBI’s investigation into the Zodiac Killer remains open and unsolved. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, and out of respect for the victims and their families, we will not be providing further comment at this time.”

“The felon has been secretly listed as the Zodiac ‘suspect’ in Headquarters’ computers since 2016,” Case Breakers stated. They spoke to a man whom Poste and his wife used to babysit as a child, another man who said he was part of Poste’s criminal “posse,” and an ex-girlfriend of Poste’s son.

The Case Breakers believe the Zodiac killer also murdered co-ed Cheri Jo Bates, 18, in October 1966, two years before the Zodiac’s first reported murder. They assert that Poste was only 15 minutes away from the scene of Bates’ murder, and that a paint-splattered wristwatch that they claim was worn by the murderer was found near Bates’ body. They note that Poste worked for 40 years as a house painter.

The team says a heelprint found in the dirt where Bates was killed reportedly came from a military-style boot similar to Poste’s footprints.

The Zodiac killer claimed in public letters that he murdered roughly 40 people; authorities believe the number is five. On December 20, 1968, the Zodiac murdered high school sweethearts David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen, who were parked in a car when they were shot.

On Herman Road near Benicia, the killer murdered Darlene Ferrin, 22, and her companion, Michael Mageau, 19, also sitting in a car when they were shot. Ferrin died; Mageau was gravely wounded, but survived.

On September 27, 1969, Cecelia Ann Shepard, 22, and Bryan Calvin Hartnell, 20, were attacked as they sat on a blanket. They were both repeatedly stabbed. Hartnell survived.

On October 11, 1969, the murderer killed taxi driver Paul Stine, shooting him in the head from the back seat.

The Zodiac killer mocked law enforcement with ciphers sent in letters to newspapers. In 2021, The Case Breakers said photos from Poste’s darkroom showed him with scars on his forehead matching scars from a sketch of the Zodiac killer.
