Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions hit back at President Donald Trump late on Friday night after the president continued to criticize him over his handling of the Russia investigation.

Trump attacked Sessions, who is running for his old Senate seat in Alabama, in a tweet that promoted Sessions’ opponent, Republican Tommy Tuberville, who is a former college football coach.

“Jeff Sessions quit on the president and he failed Alabama,” Tuberville said in a video. “I’ll always have President Trump’s back. We’ll drain the swamp, build a wall, no amnesty ever.”

Trump tweeted, “3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville, the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!”

Sessions responded to Trump’s tweet by writing, “@realdonaldtrump Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”

“Tuberville’s a coward who is rightly too afraid to debate me,” Sessions continued. “He says you’re wrong on China & trade. He wants to bring in even more foreign workers to take American jobs. That’s not your agenda and it’s not mine or Alabama’s. I know Alabama. Tuberville doesn’t.”

Earlier this month, Sessions defended himself from Trump’s attacks, saying, “To not recuse myself from that investigation, of which I was a target as a senior campaign official and a witness, would have been breaking the law. I do not and will not break the law. I did the right thing for the country and for President Trump. If I, as a target of the investigation, had broken the law by not recusing myself, it would have been a catastrophe for the rule of law and for the President.”

Sessions later penned an open letter to Alabama voters explaining why he stepped back from the investigation.

“As the world knows, the President disagreed with me on recusal, but I did what the law required me to do,” Sessions’ letter said. “I was a central figure in the campaign and was also a subject of and witness in the investigation and could obviously not legally be involved in investigating myself. If I had ignored and broken the law, the Democrats would have used that to severely damage the President.”

“I was the first to endorse President Trump, even when many thought I was nuts to do so,” Sessions continued. “I helped Trump win and traveled the country with him, embedded in his campaign. I am one of the architects of his agenda, and I was pushing his agenda even before he ran for office.”

“I have remained faithful to the President and his agenda,” Sessions added. “I have always stood up for him, and I never backed down, not even for one moment. My convictions are immovable, built on rock, not sand.”
