Rather Praises Tapper’s Left-Wing Advocacy

By  Robert Kraychik

Dan Rather praised fellow left-wing Democrat Jake Tapper of CNN on Monday.

Describing his journalistic career as being grounded in a commitment to the truth, Rather points to Tapper as best exemplifying this “North Star” standard:

In 2004, Rather and his former colleagues at CBS – a left-wing and Democrat-aligned new outlet that postures as objective and nonpartisan – attempted to derail then President George Bush’s presidential reelection campaign. Rather and his team knowingly presented forged documents as genuine in order to undermine Bush’s military service, including false accusations of Bush having been AWOL.

Rather’s 2004 attempt to unseat Bush and elect then Democrat presidential nominee John Kerry was exposed by internet critics, not by supposedly competing news outlets such as ABC, NBC, or CNN. Had Rather and his team executed such an operation twenty years earlier – prior to the rise of the internet – it is unlikely that its falsity would have exposed.

Last December, Rather described his 2004 plot as amounting to good faith and honest journalism. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter prior to the release of the 2015 film Truth (dramatizing Rathergate/Memograte, as Rather’s 2004 political operation has come to be known), he said: “We reported a true story. We didn’t do it perfectly. We made some mistakes of getting to the truth. But that didn’t change the truth of what we reported.”

Tapper expressed appreciation for Rather’s approval on Twitter.

Tapper also presents himself as an objective and nonpartisan news anchor.
