Rapper PnB Rock was shot and killed during a robbery in Los Angeles Monday.

The 30-year-old Philadelphia native rapper was robbed while he was eating lunch with his girlfriend at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, a soul food restaurant chain in South Los Angeles, police said. The “Selfish” and “Jealous” rapper was approached by a suspect who demanded jewelry and other valuables. Police said the suspect shot the rapper almost immediately, before stealing some valuables and escaping.

“What occurred was the victim, along with a female witness, were in this area eating at a restaurant when they were approached by at least one suspect, who brandished a firearm and demanded property from the victim,” Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a press conference Monday, via 6ABC Philadelphia. “The suspect then shot the victim multiple times, and removed property and then left the location in a getaway car.”

Police said they received a call at around 1:23 p.m. local time, and found a male suspect with gunshot wounds. Video from the incident shared on social media showed the rapper lying on the floor of the restaurant as several people attempted to render aid. 6ABC reported that at least one person tried to perform CPR. PnB Rock was pronounced dead at 1:59 p.m. local time, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Multiple outlets reported that the suspect may have tracked down the rapper using social media. PnB Rock’s girlfriend posted a photo of her meal on Instagram, tagging the Roscoe’s franchise. That post has since been deleted. Police said they would be looking into whether the post contributed to the attack, but they could not “verify” that at the time, 6ABC reported.

The attack came just days after PnB Rock talked about his experience with crime in Los Angeles. In an interview with DJ and podcaster DJ Akademiks last week, the rapper talked about an incident where a group of men started harassing him and his family in a store; he left and drove away to another store, but the group followed him, then continued harassing him.

PnB Rock also said that criminals in Los Angeles are much bolder than criminals in Philadelphia, and unafraid to commit crimes in broad daylight. “Where I’m from, we like sneaky criminals,” he said. “In L.A., it’s like they bold.” The rapper said that robberies of other rappers had become common recently; in 2020, rapper Pop Smoke was killed during a home invasion robbery, the LA Times reported. Authorities told the Times that a trend of so-called “follow home” robberies has emerged in the city.

PnB Rock, whose real name is Rakim Hasheem Allen, was born in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. His stage name is taken from the corner of Pastorius and Baynton streets, a street corner near where he grew up. He was part of a wave of rappers who first rose to prominence with his mixtape RnB 3, released under Atlantic Records. His 2016 song “Selfish” topped out at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100, and he broke out when he was featured on fellow rapper YFN Lucci’s 2016 hit single “Everyday We Lit,” which peaked at #33 on the Billboard chart. He was named to the Freshman Class of 2017 by XXL Magazine.
