Actress Priyanka Chopra got candid about the birth of her daughter, Malti Mari, and hinted at why she chose to use a surrogate to expand her family.
Chopra and musician husband Nick Jonas welcomed the baby in January 2022. The 40-year-old star explained to British Vogue why she opted to use a surrogate rather than getting pregnant herself.
“I had medical complications,” Chopra told the publication for the February cover story. “This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely, and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”
She went on to describe the backlash she’s received for choosing surrogacy.
Critics of surrogacy and other reproductive technology insist it turns children into a commodity. They point out how women with less economic means are often selected to serve as surrogates for wealthy individuals, including celebrities. Plus, if the child is born from an egg donor and/or donated sperm, the process denies them the chance of knowing their biological parents.
“You don’t know me,” the “Matrix: Resurrections” alum went on. “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history, or my daughter’s, public doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.”
During the interview, Chopra also went into detail about her experience following Malti’s premature birth.
“I was in the OR when she came out,” the “Baywatch” actress recalled. “She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed in her tiny body to intubate her.”
The mom of one said she spent long days after that bonding with her daughter as she stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). “We spent every single day with her on my chest, on my husband’s chest,” Chopra said of that time. “I didn’t know if she would make it or not.”
Previously, Bangladeshi poet and novelist Taslima Nasreen went viral for reacting to Chopra and Jonas’ baby news by saying, “How do those mothers feel when they get their readymade babies through surrogacy? Do they have the same feelings for the babies like the mothers who give birth to the babies?”
Chopra and Jonas are not the only celebrities who welcomed their baby via surrogate. Some other big names who also used surrogates include Khloe Kardashian, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, Kristin Wiig, Gabrielle Union, and others.
