A new poll released by Monmouth University in New Jersey found that 60% of Trump supporters would continue supporting the president no matter what. Overall, that’s equivalent to about 1 in 4 Americans.
When asked if they could “think of anything that Trump could do, or fail to do, in his term as president that would make you disapprove of the job he is doing,” the majority of poll respondents said no, lending credence to Trump’s own campaign pronouncement that he could “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and [he] wouldn’t lose voters.”
To be fair, Trump’s critics were just as absolute in their convictions.
“At the other end of the scale, most of those who disapprove of Trump said that they could not ‘think of anything Trump could do, other than resign, in his term as president that would make you approve of the job he is doing,'” reports the Los Angeles Times.
Those who said he couldn’t do anything to win them over outnumbered those who said he couldn’t lose their loyalty, 28% to 24%, respectively.
While other polls have indicated that disapproval of the president is at an all-time high, the new Monmouth poll, taken August 10 and 14, indicates that Trump’s favorability may be on the rise.
According to the poll, 49% of those surveyed disapproved of Trump’s job performance while 41% approved; that’s higher than the averages of recent, nonpartisan polls showing that nearly 57% disapprove of Trump’s performance.
Trump’s core supporters are still comprised of mostly white, mostly male voters, while a disproportionate number of Trump’s opposition is female.
